No problem — ’twas a piece of a cake!

by Kerry
THANKGODYOUREHERE

this is quite the exchange

“Our organization recently moved most of its employees from several small offices into one large office,” writes our submitter in Vancouver. “It only took five months for the kitchen conflict to ramp up into a full-blown note war.”

thank you for helping yourself to half of my birthday cake....I guess I didn't need the whole cake to share with my friends and coworkers anyways. ...and happy birthday to you too!

To the leaver of the cake: You're very welcome.

...and someone helped themselves to one of my steam buns (leftovers) in a takeout box but I have a bad cold so they'll get the bad karma back.

A robot that runs like a cat

THANKGODYOUREHERE

they are building cat robots... the internet must brace yourselves

cheetah-cub

Cheetah-cub (credit: A. Sproewitz et al./International Journal of Robotics Research)

Thanks to its cat-modeled legs, EPFL’s four-legged “cheetah-cub robot” is small, light and the fastest in its category (small quadruped robots under 30Kg): it can run 5 kilometers per hour (3.1 mph) — nearly seven times its body length in one second. .

Developed by EPFL’s Biorobotics Laboratory (Biorob),  biomechanics, the robot will serve as a platform for research in locomotion and biomechanics.

Robots developed from this concept could eventually be used in search and rescue missions or for exploration.

Although not as agile as a real cat, it still has excellent auto-stabilization characteristics when running at full speed or over a course that included disturbances such as small steps. It’s also extremely light, compact, and robust and can be easily assembled from materials that are inexpensive and readily available.

Faithful reproduction of a cat

The design is based on the meticulous observation and faithful reproduction of the feline leg. The size of a domestic cat, the number of segments — three on each leg — and their proportions are the same as they are on a cat. Springs are used to reproduce tendons, and actuators — small motors that convert energy into movement — are used to replace the muscles.

“This morphology gives the robot the mechanical properties from which cats benefit … a marked running ability and elasticity in the right spots, to ensure stability,” explains Alexander Sprowitz, a Biorob scientist.

According to Biorob director Auke Ijspeert, “the long-term goal is to be able to develop fast, agile, ground-hugging machines for use in exploration, for example for search and rescue in natural disaster situations.”

Woodland Park Zoo's Trio of Jaguar Cubs Full of Personality

by Andrew Bleiman
THANKGODYOUREHERE

big cats omg

JamieDelkweek7jag3-2BLOG

On March 22, these three Jaguar cubs were born at the Woodland Park Zoo to parents Junior and Nayla. First-time mother Nayla demonstrated natural maternal care and instincts, protecting the cubs so much that keepers couldn’t get their hands on the cubs for their first vet check until late last week! Once they did, it was determined that the triplets are healthy and that there are two girls and one boy, all exhibiting very different personalities.

The first born was a girl, the smallest of the cubs - but that does not stop her from being the most independent of the three. She also tends to lead her siblings in their mischief and play. The second born was a male who is also the largest cub. He is the shyest around keepers and a mama's boy, sticking close to mom's side, and yet he's the most vocal of the three.

Jaguar births are rare, and as a “Near Threatened” species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, the jaguar triplets are a major milestone for Woodland Park Zoo’s jaguar conservation efforts. Third born is the other female, who regularly follows her older sister and playfully roughhouses with her big brother.

The Woodland Park Zoo's blog, which you can read HERE, states, "Keep in mind, habitat loss and fragmentation of wild areas, hunting by ranchers, and loss of wild prey due to overhunting by humans are major threats facing jaguars in the wild. Each year, Woodland Park Zoo’s Jaguar Conservation Fund supports field conservation projects dedicated to preserving wild jaguars and their habitat. The fund has given awards to 19 projects in 12 North, Central and South American countries for a total investment of $113,806. Currently, the zoo supports three projects in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua that all aim to find ways for both people and predators to share Earth’s ecosystems."

Look for more pictures of the cubs after the fold. Before that, watch this series of three videos from the zoo's closed circuit cameras, which allow Mom the privacy to nurture and bond with her cubs. The first is the video announces the cubs' birth:

The Nazi Origins of Meth — AKA “Tank Chocolate”

by Klint Finley
THANKGODYOUREHERE

tank chocolate

thats great

Pervitin

Fabienne Hurst writes:

When the then-Berlin-based drug maker Temmler Werke launched its methamphetamine compound onto the market in 1938, high-ranking army physiologist Otto Ranke saw in it a true miracle drug that could keep tired pilots alert and an entire army euphoric. It was the ideal war drug. In September 1939, Ranke tested the drug on university students, who were suddenly capable of impressive productivity despite being short on sleep.

From that point on, the Wehrmacht, Germany’s World War II army, distributed millions of the tablets to soldiers on the front, who soon dubbed the stimulant “Panzerschokolade” (“tank chocolate”). British newspapers reported that German soldiers were using a “miracle pill.” But for many soldiers, the miracle became a nightmare.

As enticing as the drug was, its long-term effects on the human body were just as devastating. Short rest periods weren’t enough to make up for long stretches of wakefulness, and the soldiers quickly became addicted to the stimulant. And with addiction came sweating, dizziness, depression and hallucinations. There were soldiers who died of heart failure and others who shot themselves during psychotic phases. Some doctors took a skeptical view of the drug in light of these side effects. Even Leonardo Conti, the Third Reich’s top health official, wanted to limit use of the drug, but was ultimately unsuccessful.

New Alan Moore Interview in The Believer

by Klint Finley
THANKGODYOUREHERE

understanding is magick

alan_moore_believer

Too Much To Dream author Peter Bebergal interviews Alan Moore for The Believer:

BLVR: So in writing, whether you’re trying to inhabit a metaphysical being or trying to inhabit someone living in a poor neighborhood, unless you can inhabit them with compassion, and inhabit them with understanding, they’ll never be a believable character otherwise.

AM: Right, the character will be limited, and so will you. When I was doing V for Vendetta years ago, and I started to introduce the Nazi heads of this totalitarian state in the far-flung future of 1997, I’d been marching against the National Front and taking part in the Rock Against Racism marches, and I realized that I can’t just portray Nazis as bad guys, because everybody knows that, and you’re not saying anything. You’re contributing to the myth that they were somehow separate from the rest of humanity, which they weren’t. The Nazis were just ordinary human beings who got caught up in something very bad and, at the time, rather unprecedented. This is not to excuse their behavior, obviously, it’s simply to point out that it doesn’t do you any service to demonize any group of people. It’s much better to try and understand from the inside.

There was a scene in Promethea where the character is confronted by a horde of demons, and the way that she decides to deal with them is by owning them, by identifying each demon’s qualities and saying, “Yes, I’ve done that; yes, I accept responsibility for that,” at which point she actually physically eats the demon that she’s referring to. What a lot of magic is about is coming to your own individual terms with the universe, which is to say yourself, given that the entirety of the universe that is observable to you or me is that which actually exists inside our heads. And coming to an understanding of those things made me a little bit bigger because I had a part of my mind that could look with compassion at a class of people that I had never been able to do that with before. Not to like them any more, but to understand them.

Mojito Jello Shots

by elsiecake

Best mojito jello shots!!!!Did you ever think you'd see jello shots on the blog? Ok, ok, but hear me out. These are so fun! I'm a sucker for jello inside a citrus rind! Get me every time. My soon to be sister-in-law made these really cute blue jello in orange rind snacks for my nephew's pirate themed birthday party. They were just jello, not jello shots. Just for the record. :)How to make mojito shotsHow to make jello shots in lime shellsI made these for a little get-together at my house last weekend, and they went over really well. These are the perfect amount of lime and mint, in my opinion. They are very fun and refreshing. Add the rum if you want, or leave it out and just enjoy your cute jello creations. Either way these are worth the effort it takes to make a batch. Here's what you do:Mojito jello shot ingredientsMojito jello shots, makes around 32 if using lime rinds. Adapted from Food & Wine

1 cup water
1 cup sugar
3 envelopes unflavored gelatin
3/4 cup fresh lime juice
3 stems fresh mint leaves
1 cup white rum

In a pot, combine the water and sugar over medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and stir in the gelatin. Add the lime juice and 2 mint stems (with leaves). Allow that to steep for 12-15 minutes. Remove the mint stems and stir in the rum if using. How to make jello shotsIn the meantime hollow out your lime shells. This is probably the hardest part of making these. I used a small sharp knife to carve around the inside of the limes and then a mellon baller to scoop out the centers. If the insides don't look perfect don't worry! Mine looked far from perfect. Be sure to leave the limes cut in halves until after the jello has set, then you can slice them into wedges.

Fill each lime shell with the jello mixture and sprinkle in some chopped fresh mint (from the remaining leaves on that 3rd stem). Place in the refrigerator and allow to set for at least 3 hours.Mojito shotsMaking mojito jello shotsThese are a fun little party trick! I think I'm going to make these ahead of time for the next camping trip I go on. I'm going to be that girl who pulls out a tupperware of jello shots. Ha! Oh well, at least they are the cutest and most delicious little jello shots. That ups the classy factor, right? :) xo. Emma

How do you feel about digital comics/digital exclusive content? I read my first comic with Marvel AR panels and though it was pretty neat technology but I don't like digital comics as much. I feel comics were made as a print-only type of media and you lose a bit of the experience in its digital form. I was curious how it effects the writers/artists - if it does at all? Do you think this new technology is innovative and exciting, or more of a 'just a matter of time' deal? Thanks! :)

by brianbendis
THANKGODYOUREHERE

the ar panels are pretty cool. i do them on rereads, its pretty fun. i really like digital comics. i saw a hellboy book digitally and my print copy looked so muddled next to it, but the print copy i had in my hands as opposed to my ipad so i dont know what i want

Whatever small quibbles I have with digital comics at the moment, and most of them having to do with quote unquote adult content being threatened by knee-jerk corporate culture, the fact that between digital and Amazon’s increasing wide grip on the planet has made anyone who wants to get their hands on our books able to get their hands on our books.

I love print media and I love my local comic book store but facts are facts and the facts are most of the late part of the 20th century was me hearing from people who had no access to a comic book store and just couldn’t find a way to get their hands on our comics… and it always broke my heart

and I am telling you those days of the wanting reader have completely disappeared.

we now have readers all over the world able to get whatever they want whenever they want it. to quote my dear friend Matt fraction: everybody has a comic book store in their pocket, what could possibly be better than that?

as far as the Marvel AR product, I love it. I love director’s commentaries and bonus features and all those whistles and bells on my DVDs and Blu-ray’s and I always wondered how we would ever be able do that to our comics on top of creating that section in the back of our trades filled with all of the scripts and sketches. we have just  begun to discover what we are going to be able to do to make these digital experiences something special. so I love it.

we have a marvel retreat in a few weeks and I’m already planning what I’m going to be doing with my marvel AR recording time
