Nicki Minaj‘s “Anaconda” is the pop culture renewable resource that just never runs out. Before it even came out, we got the incredible artwork. Then the even more incredible memes based on the artwork. Then the actual song. Then behind the scenes at the video shoot with Nicki’s patois rant. Then the photos of Drake’s friendzone lapdance. Then the mass web ejacu-reaction to the full “Anaconda” video. Then the VMA performance. And now…we’ve reaching critical mass, because we’re just getting pure silliness.
But this still made me laugh….because I’m basically a 12 year old boy.

Labor Day is all about “honoring the working people” of the USA. Yup, it’s true! And what better way to celebrate America — and all your hard work — than with a day off? You can make the day even better by surrounding yourself with pals, soaking up a little vitamin C by way of the sun, and with a tasty patriotic cocktail (or two).

We’re here to sweep your taste buds off their feet with two easy, patriotic beverages. The first is a Strawberry-Vanilla Sparkling Wine and the second is a Blueberry Margarita.

Strawberry-Vanilla Sparkling Wine

This is a super refreshing drink that’s light, a little sweet and not too strong. It’s perfect for sipping under the warm sun.

What You Need:

• 2 strawberries (chopped)
• 1/4 tsp. vanilla
• 1 TBS sugar
• Sparkling wine or champagne
• Ice
• Shaker

How To: Chop your strawberries and place them in your cocktail shaker with some ice. Add your vanilla and sugar. Next, fill with your sparkling wine or champagne (I’m using Gruet Rose, which is berry infused and delicious) and shake, shake, shake. You can sift or pour all the contents into your glass. Garnish with a strawberry.

Blueberry Margarita

With flavors of lime, orange and blueberry, this fruity margarita is bound to be a favorite of the day. It’s a little stronger than the first drink, but girlfriend, it’s good.

What You Need:

• 1/4 cup blueberries
• 1 lime
• 4 oz. tequila
• 1 oz. simple syrup
• 1 oz. triple sec
• Margarita salt
• Ice
• Muddler
• Shaker

How To: Place your blueberries and the juice of one lime into your cocktail shaker and muddle. If you don’t have a muddler, you can use a spoon. Add your simple syrup (recipe below), triple sec and tequila to the shaker. I’m using Gionelli Triple Sec and Padrino Tequila. Shake it up and set aside. Rim your glass with salt by applying simple syrup and dipping in the salt. Pour the mixture into the rimmed glass, pop in a few blueberries and commence the cheers.

Simple syrup recipe: 1 part water, 1 part sugar. Heat on stove until sugar dissolves completely. Store leftovers in the fridge.

APOCALYPTIGIRL: ANDREW MACLEAN’S GRAPHIC NOVEL DEBUT TACKLES THE EXTREMES OF HUMANITY, END TIMES AND CAT OWNERSHIP

Andrew MacLean is an illustrator and comics artist we’ve been admiring for a long time. Part of the uniformly excellent stylists at Brand New Nostalgia, MacLean has appeared in our Best Art Ever (This Week) feature and earned couple of solo spotlights as well for his great work, which is an uncanny blend of a kind of simple, airy animation style with detailed manga, woodblock art, sci-fi Eurocomics and old fashioned American adventure comics. In storytelling, MacLean’s biggest claim to fame has been the self-published Head Lopper — which is, blissfully, precisely what it sounds like, a swords-and-scorcery type comic that affords MacLean to show off his talent for action and humor. Additionally, his work is featured in Brand New Nostalgia and Out Of Step Arts’ kaBOOMbox anthology, a particularly cool-looking collection funded with Kickstarter that will be available at conventions later this year and online soon.

But MacLean’s going to make a much bigger splash in the comics scene in 2015, when Dark Horse releases his debut graphic novel ApocalyptiGirl: An Aria For End Times. The 96-page book features story, art, color and lettering by MacLean, who, based on the preview pages provided exclusively to ComicsAlliance, has leveled up in a big way since beginning work on Head Lopper.

Set in a ruined city at the end of the world, ApocalyptiGirl is the story of a woman called Aria (and her cat Jelly Beans) who fights for survival as she tries to find the ancient power that could be her salvation. Dark Horse describes the project as “an action-packed exploration of the extremes of humanity and our desire for a home in a world beyond repair,” some of which is definitely reflected in these pages. MacLean’s gift for environments is in full effect, transporting you to an overgrown wasteland that you can tell at a glance was once a civilization.

You can see a number of influences or familiar images built into this work: the ancient robot repair recalls Miyazaki’s Laputa: Castle in the Sky; the crisp layouts and figures recall Mike Mignola and Guy Davis; and the plucky hero talking to herself (or to Jelly Beans) reminds one a bit of Y: The Last Man; but it’s all synthesized in MacLean’s own tantalizing way. We’re definitely looking forward to this.

ApocalyptiGirl actually spawned from this OOSA print Andrew did with Toby Cypress a few years ago. It’s great to see Andrew take it from a concept to a fully realized book. Can’t wait to see it!

Neil’s right. That early version of Aria I did as a jam with Toby Cypress was based on Amy Winehouse and the cats were just silliness, and became the first seed of ApocalyptiGirl.  -A

The thinking is that these will appeal to the sort of people who would not pick up a classic. Who are these mad people? Can we give them a good pummeling?

The research: One study concluded that controlled exposure to psilocybin could have long-lasting medical and spiritual benefits. In 2011, Johns Hopkins researchers found that by giving volunteer test subjects just the right dose (not enough to give them a terrifying bad trip), they were able to reliably induce transcendental experiences in volunteers. This provoked long-lasting psychological growth and helped the volunteers to find peace in their lives, all without side effects. Nearly all of the 18 test subjects, average age 46, were college graduates. Seventy-eight percent were religious and all were interested in finding a scientific experience.

Fourteen months later, 94% said their trip on magic mushrooms was one of the five most important moments of their lives. Thirty-nine percent said it was the most important thing that had ever happened to them. Their colleagues, friends, and family members said the participants were kinder and happier; the volunteers had positive experiences ranging from more empathy and improved marriages to less drinking.

Lead author Roland Griffiths told TIME’s Healthland that “The important point here is that we found the sweet spot where we can optimize the positive persistent effects and avoid some of the fear and anxiety that can occur and can be quite disruptive.”

What’s more, the researchers say that those changes in personality are highly atypical, because personalities tend to be pretty set in stone after the age of 25-30. According to postdoctoral researcher Katherine MacLean, who contributed to the study, “This is one of the first studies to show that you actually can change adult personality.”

More research: Within the past few decades, interest in hallucinogens has expanded from the counter-culture to dedicated, methodological research. For example, another study published in 2010 conducted research into whether psilocybin can lend some comfort to terminal cancer patients — finding evidence that it reduced death anxiety and experienced significantly less depression. According to study researcher Dr. Charles Grob, “Individuals did speak up and tell us that they felt it was of great value.” NYU’s Dr. Stephen Ross, who conducted a similar study, told SCPR that “To me it’s been some of the most remarkable clinical findings I’ve ever seen as a psychiatrist.”

As Ferguson continues to reel after Michael Brown’s death and the police threaten to shoot journalists and tear gas children, three badass teenage coders from Georgia have developed a timely mobile app to hold police accountable.

Five-O, created by siblings Ima, Asha, and Caleb Christian, allows users to detail their encounters with police officers and rate them on their professionalism. Anyone can check how their community stacks up and the information will be sent to law enforcement. “We’d like to know which regions in the US provide horrible law enforcement services as well as highlight the agencies that are highly rated by their citizens, explained senior Ima.” In addition to putting more power into the hands of citizens when interacting with law enforcement, we believe that highly rated police departments should be used as models for those that fail at providing quality law enforcement services.” 

Though it sure as hell doesn’t feel like it much of the time, the police are supposed to “protect and serve” us — all of us. Law enforcement departments across the country should be thanking these high school students for helping them see if their officers are doing their jobs. The app is available for download starting today!

I’ve always wondered what my first meal would be when coming home from prison if I ever did a real bid (granted these thoughts came to me while riding the E train back from Jamaica with a half lb. of mid-grade stuffed in my Northface). For Remy Ma, it was Popeyes and a Welches Grape. This was just one of the gems Remy dropped while doing her first Sway In The Morning interview. Her freestyle is on the way, too, so stay tuned.

In PT. 2 of our interview with Remy Ma, the rapper opened up about being in prison for 6.5 years and how she balanced motherhood while her son grew from age 7 to 14. She also talked about who she’s feeling in the rap game and why she has more of a business mindset.
