WHOA! Nearly 100 rattlesnakes found in den underneath California home

SpinnyNuNu

Nuke it from orbit

An expert said droughts were likely to blame, as rattlesnakes will seek out areas where there's water as they look for lizards and rodents.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott orders ban on private company vaccine mandate

The party of small government and “hands off business” sure does like forcing businesses to conform to their whims.

The governor issued an executive order and called on state lawmakers to pass a similar ban into law.

Florida mother calls for support of hospitals after husband dies from COVID-19

SpinnyNuNu

I’m so incredibly sad for his kids.

Losing your dad during childhood would be devastating.

However, this makes me crazy:

>>> "This isn't fair and we need to figure out how to make it better. Whether it's better, hiring more staff, funding, raising awareness. Whatever it may be, we have to do something,” Gomez said

They were unvaccinated. The answer to the “something” that needs to be done is GET VACCINATED.

Deanna Gomez says her whole family caught COVID-19 at the beginning of September but while she and her kids quickly recovered, her husband Justin did not.

McConnell says he won't help Dems raise debt limit again

SpinnyNuNu

He’s responsible for the spending that requires raising the debt ceiling, refuses to be an adult and meet his obligations.

The statement raises fresh doubts about how Congress will avert a federal default when a temporary patch expires in December.

California first to let kids add parents to insurance plans

SpinnyNuNu

My son’s health insurance through his job is WAY better than ours through David’s job. I keep asking him if he wants to adopt me.

California is the first state to let some adult children add their parents as dependents on their insurance plans, a move advocates hope will cover the small population of people living in the country illegally who don't qualify for other assistance programs.

Good!

California became the first state to prohibit "stealthing," or removing a condom without permission during intercourse, after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law Thursday.

California Style Burritos | Basics with Babish

I was born and raised in California and in all of my 47 years, not one Mexican restaurant, taqueria, or hole-in-the-wall Mexican deli has ever offered to put fries in my burrito. Maybe it’s a SoCal thing?

California recall election: Live county results map

SpinnyNuNu

My county voted no! We’ve lived here for 20 years and we’ve never been blue. I’m not expecting it to last into the 2022 midterms, but I’m happy for small miracles.

See a county-by-county breakdown of how Californians voted in the gubernatorial recall election.

Unusual ruling: Judge denies a couple’s divorce

Wow. This is absolutely ridiculous. I guess the judge would be happier if they were at each other’s throats?

In a virtual court hearing last month, the judge said, "I get the vibe that you might be able to work this out, and I could be wrong, but I sit through a lot of these things."

Carl Sagan (1995)

by noreply@blogger.com (Minnesotastan)
SpinnyNuNu

Demon Haunted World is a great book. I’m currently re-reading it because on of the podcasts that I listen to is discussing it a chapter a week. It’s been over a decade since I last read it and it is incredibly relevant to today’s political climate and the prevalence of conspiracy theories. 10/10 would recommend.

"The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark is a 1995 book by the astrophysicist Carl Sagan and co-authored by Ann Druyan,[1] in which the author aims to explain the scientific method to laypeople and to encourage people to learn critical and skeptical thinking. He explains methods to help distinguish between ideas that are considered valid science and those that can be considered pseudoscience. Sagan states that when new ideas are offered for consideration, they should be tested by means of skeptical thinking and should stand up to rigorous questioning."

and a hearty fuck you to facebook, too.

by wil@wilwheaton.net (Wil Wheaton)
SpinnyNuNu

Facebook is fucking trash.

I posted this comment on my own Facebook page, on a post about the horrifying assault on women in Texas, by the Texas GOP. I’m unclear how a general statement like this, not in reply to anyone or even on someone else’s page, is harassment or bullying.

Facebook gave me a choice to either accept this, or dispute it. If I accept it, it goes as a permanent strike against me. If I dispute it (I did) they’ll … eventually get to it, I guess. Either way, I’m in Facebook jail for three days. It feels real authoritarian and arbitrary to me.

I just want to reaffirm my contempt for Texas Republicans and the white women who voted for them. They are fucking garbage humans who deserve to fall into a well filled with vomit, never to emerge.

Also, the bullshit Facebook decides is out of bounds makes no sense to me. Facebook is totally fine with domestic terrorists organizing violence, and anti-vaxx liars spreading lies that get people killed, but you tell Texas Republicans to go fuck themselves, and that’s just too much for Facebook’s delicate sensibilities.

What a bunch of bullshit.

Edit 9/8/21: I am confident this whole thing was triggered by a White Fragility brigade, and I’d like to invite those delightful people to suck it.

2000-year-old ladies shoe

by noreply@blogger.com (Minnesotastan)
SpinnyNuNu

I would totally wear these shoes.

"This shoe is one of two quite similar finds (no.s 220 and 221) from one of the wells at the Saalburg Castle. The cut and decoration of the uppers is so similar, yet different, that it seems likely that they came from the same workshop if not from the same hand.

I have always admired those shoes and finally got around to make a pair of one of them. The decoration is an elegant mix of circular holes, triangles, squares, darts and slits. It is very well possible that the decoration was further enhanced by stitching with coloured thread and bands woven through the slits as suggested by Marquita Volken."
Via for the top photo.  Some more info:
"On the Taunus ridge northwest of Bad Homburg, Hesse, Germany lies the Saalburg Roman fort. It dates to 90AD and served as a linear border fortification... Sometime during the 19th century it was rediscovered, excavated, then later fully reconstructed. It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage site... The Saalburg Museum contains many Roman relics, including shoes..."

California sheriff on Dixie Fire: ‘Every day we hold each other up'

The west coast is on fire and the east coast is under water, but climate change is totally not real, y’all.

Plumas County Sheriff Todd Johns joined KCRA 3 on Thursday to talk about the impact of the Dixie Fire in his community, noting that the recovery process is happening in some places as the fire still threatens other areas.

A "fallstreak hole" with circumhorizon arc

by noreply@blogger.com (Minnesotastan)
SpinnyNuNu

It looks like a wormhole to Oz

Explained by beeppboppp at the Reddit thread:
"Such holes are formed when the water temperature in the clouds is below freezing, but the water, in a supercooled state, has not frozen yet due to the lack of ice nucleation. When ice crystals do form, a domino effect is set off due to the Bergeron process, causing the water droplets around the crystals to evaporate: this leaves a large, often circular, hole in the cloud. It is thought that the introduction of large numbers of tiny ice crystals into the cloud layer sets off this domino effect of fusion which creates the hole."

You learn something every day.

Caldor Fire jumps Highway 50 as El Dorado County blaze grows to 90,000 acres

SpinnyNuNu

We lived in Grizzly Flats when we first got married. It’s basically at the end of the road and the only thing past it is the El Dorado national forest. It’s beautiful and we only moved away because David’s commute was 1.5 hours each way (without traffic). I am so sad that the community has been so devastated, but I am really not terribly surprised. There’s one way in and out and it’s a very windy, two-lane road. Getting massive amounts of heavy equipment there takes time.

I have spent all week trying to figure out if our old house survived. I know it doesn’t really affect me, but I always secretly hoped that we could buy it back at some point.

The Caldor Fire jumped Highway 50 near Kyburz in El Dorado County on Saturday as crews continue to battle a blaze that has grown to more than 140 square miles with no containment.

Health officials warn people not to take a drug meant for livestock to ward off or treat COVID-19

SpinnyNuNu

How in the hell did we get to the point as a country that a pretty large segment of our population refuses to get a proven vaccine to save themselves and their loved ones from a deadly virus, but they are willing to take horse de-worming medicine instead? To own the Libs?

I hate people.

While there are human uses for the drug, the US Food and Drug Administration has not approved ivermectin to treat or prevent COVID-19 in humans and the drug is not an anti-viral medication.

Crochet Pattern – Rainbow Fish Thick n’ Quick Socks

by Shellie Wilson
SpinnyNuNu

These look like something Punky Brewster would wear.

If you’re looking for the coziest lounging booties ever, no need to look any further. These are a blend of 100% cotton and a 50% cotton / 50% Acrylic blend to make them extra soft. Although you can use whatever yarn you want of course! I made a green pair with the extended top using Yarn Bee Aspyn yarn & Yarn Bee Soft N’ Sleek.

Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced because it requires Double-Ended Tunisian Crochet hook – working in the round knowledge. However, you’re welcome to substitute the rows of Tunisian with Single Crochet.

You can grab this pattern here via Etsy.

Drop crotch skinny jeans - updated

by noreply@blogger.com (Minnesotastan)
SpinnyNuNu

But why?

Available from Oak (marked down from $158 to $79).  They also have drop crotch sweat pants on sale for half-price at $64:

I can't advise you as to whether the heels are part of a coordinated look, but I do know that for drop crotch jodhpurs, you'll need to go to Comme des Garçons:

Also available for half price at $298.  It would make me wonder if the wearer had scrotal elephantiasis, but then I'm not up on fashion, so I'll leave the commenting to those of you with a more enlightened and contemporary viewpoint.

Reposted from 2012 because John Farrier posted at Neatorama these "double-waist jeans" -

Woman fails to prove the vaccine made her magnetic

by noreply@blogger.com (Minnesotastan)
SpinnyNuNu

The video at the link at the Cleveland news station is worth a watch because of the sheer lunacy and for how delusionally convinced she is.

Steve McPherson’s tweet in response to the video is my favorite. (Also at the Cleveland news site)

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - A woman who identified herself as a nurse practitioner student tried to defend an Ohio doctor’s unproven claim by proving she actually is magnetic after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine... Overholt used her time at the podium to try to defend a myth shared by Cleveland-area physician Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, who claimed that the COVID-19 vaccine leads to magnetism and causes metal objects to stick to the shot recipient’s body...

During the demonstration, Overholt tried to prove Dr. Tenpenny’s point to be true by sticking a key and bobby pin to her skin at the hearing for the “Enact Vaccine Choice and Anti-Discrimination Act.”

“Explain to me why the key sticks to me. It sticks to my neck, too,” Overholt said. “If somebody could explain this, that would be great.”

Both objects fell off Overholt’s skin.
