Gunner was a real life Radar O’Reilly.

From a story at War History Online:
The Battle of Darwin was the single largest attack on Australian soil during WWII. A group of 242 Japanese aircraft bombed the small town in which a strategically important Allied base and harbor were located... When he was found, after the attack, [Gunner, a six-month-old shepherd dog] had a broken leg...

It only took a few weeks for him to demonstrate his skills. One day, while the airport at Darwin was being reconstructed, Gunner became agitated, jumping about, barking and whining. Soon after, the sound of aircraft engines was heard, while a Japanese attack formation once again flooded the sky above Darwin... The airmen of Darwin connected the dots and realized a pattern between Gunner’s shift of behavior and the bombing raid. The next time the Japanese decided to attack Darwin, their luck had run out. More than 20 minutes before their arrival, Gunner had already sounded the alarm. For the first time, the Australians were ready to repel the attack...

He correctly distinguished the different sound of Allied aircraft and that of the Japanese, without ever making a single mistake. His trait was taken very seriously in a time of war. Wing Commander McFarlane even issued an order by which a portable air raid siren was to be activated whenever Gunner showed his well-known signs of alert...

Whether he survived the war remains unclear, for apart from the legend which grew around him, Gunner’s existence was rarely mentioned in the official military documents of the time.

The frog appears to be Cruziohyla craspedopus, which a Google Image search shows as being either bluish or greenish (via).  The lizard is described at its via as being a collared lizard.

Blue is a very unusual pigment in the animal kingdom; AFAIK, most blues are the result of structural alterations rather than pigments.  These photos could be somewhat manipulated, or perhaps the specimens are variant morphs of their species.  ??

Nope.

I have been advised by readers that I should not criticize or mock modern fashion because I don't understand what is going on.  I do try to understand, in this case visiting the website of LEJE, a Parisian fashion house, to read the "about":
"Straight-Curve, Oriental-Western, Decomposition-Conjunction, Masculine-Feminine, Subculture-Luxury, etc.  The brand demonstrates the charming “disparities” between these elements and the harmony hidden within the contrast.  The essential elements and sources of inspiration for LEJE are the coexistence of diversity and unity and the tension between irregularity and regularity, which are noticed in the unusual cuts, creative details, and sensual materials."

Texas wants to penalize owners of electric cars

by noreply@blogger.com (Minnesotastan)
SpinnyNuNu

Texas sounds like a delightful place to live.

Recently, Texas took a pretty harsh stance against owners of electric vehicles by proposing Senate Bill 1728, which would punish EV owners for simply owning an EV. That sounds cliche, but in essence, this is exactly what the bill is doing while being disguised as “fairness.” The claim was that EV owners need to pay their fair share and make up for fuel taxes that they don’t pay... The proposed fee was previously an additional $200 EV tax. That fee has now gone up... Added together, those numbers total $250 to $400+ in annual fees

Currently, EV owners in Texas are not allowed to take delivery of their vehicles from Tesla in the state — they have to either travel out of state or arrange a third party to ship their vehicles to them. For those who will be purchasing made-in-Texas Teslas, this also applies. Tesla will have to ship the made-in-Texas Teslas out of state, where either a third party will deliver to the customer at the customer’s expense or the customer has to travel to pick up their vehicle. Unfortunately, Texas isn’t the only state that is seemingly anti-EV. Many states have this problem.

Homemade Vanilla Extract

by Pam
SpinnyNuNu

I made vanilla extract on Saturday in my instant pot. We were running out of vanilla and I had put off buying more because it has become so expensive. I bought beans from Amazon and used vodka. I didn’t want to wait 6 months, so I researched using the instant pot. The resulting extract looks just like these pics.

Homemade Vanilla Extract

Two ingredients and patience will give you the tastiest vanilla extract. All you need is vodka, vanilla beans, and time.

I love using vanilla extract in my baking and I’ve always wanted to try making it on my own. I found a recipe on Sally’s Baking Addition so I gave it a try at the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic in early 2020. Using good vanilla beans is important but the type of vodka you use doesn’t matter as long as it’s 80 proof. You need to allow the vanilla beans to infuse the vodka for at least 8 weeks, but for the best flavor, wait at least 6-12 months before using. I waited the full 12 months and my extract has a wonderful rich flavor. I’m so excited to start baking with it!

Homemade Vanilla Extract

What You’ll Need:

  • Good quality vanilla beans
  • 80 proof clear alchohol–Vodka is most commonly used but you can also use bourbon or rum
  • Glass jar with a tight seal
  • Funnel

How to Make Homemade Vanilla Extract:

  1. Use a knife to split the vanilla beans lengthwise so the beans are exposed. If your vanilla beans are too long for your jar, simply cut them into smaller pieces, if desired.
  2. Pour vodka through a funnel into the clean glass jar making sure the beans are fully submerged in the vodka. Seal with the lid and shake a few times.
  3. Store at room temperature in a dark place out of direct sunlight. Shake the jar every week. Store for at least 8 weeks, but 6-12 months is recommended for the best flavor.

Equipment

  • Glass Jar with Tight Seal
  • Funnel

Ingredients

  • 1 cup vodka
  • 5-6 whole vanilla beans, sliced in half lengthwise

Instructions

  • Use a knife to split the vanilla beans lengthwise so the beans are exposed. If your vanilla beans are too long for your jar, simply cut them into smaller pieces, if desired.
  • Pour vodka through a funnel into the clean glass jar making sure the beans are fully submerged in the vodka. Seal with the lid and shake a few times.
  • Store at room temperature in a dark place out of direct sunlight. Shake the jar every week.
  • Store for at least 8 weeks, but I recommend 6-12 months for the best flavor.
  • Side Note: As you begin to use your vanilla, you can refill with a little vodka each time. Give it a shake after you refill and give it a shake before using, too. If you’re gifting the vanilla or if you don’t have any more alcohol to refill, remove the beans completely after the first use because they will become slimy if they aren’t submerged.
  • Side Note: Unused aged vanilla extract (with the beans fully submerged) will last several years. If it smells good, it is still good to use.
Aged extract without the beans will last indefinitely.
Once you start using the vanilla and adding more alcohol after each use, the beans will eventually need to be replaced after about 1 year because the vanilla flavor will become less intense. Simply remove & discard the old vanilla beans, add fresh beans, shake, and continue to use/refill.

Proof that plants don't "eat" dirt

So interesting!

"A seventeenth-century Flemish scientist by the name of Van Helmont... planted a willow sapling in a container that held 200 pounds of soil and, for five years, gave it nothing but water.  At the end of that time, the tree was found to weigh 169 pounds, and the soil 199 pounds, 14 ounces - from just two ounces of soil had come 169 pounds of tree."

Magnet fishing

by noreply@blogger.com (Minnesotastan)
SpinnyNuNu

My kid has been doing this for years. He’s pulled a disturbing number of knives out of our local waterways and a cordless house phone off a dock on Lake Tahoe.

As reported by the StarTribune:
Long before next week's fishing opener, a few Minnesota anglers were avidly casting lines into the water and hauling in hefty catches.  But they weren't hooking walleye, bass or northern pike. They were hoping to reel in an antique metal sign, a safe full of money, maybe even a gun.

It's part of a new, and admittedly niche, sport of magnet fishing, where you "fish" with a super-powerful magnet tied to a strong line.  Most of the time, magnet fishers pull in mundane scrap metal: old nails and bolts, a length of rebar, fish hooks, beer bottle caps...

Even if it's just scrap metal, local magnet fishers don't catch and release, but rather dispose or recycle their finds and consider themselves to be helping the environment by hauling hundreds of pounds of metal out of local rivers and lakes...

The hobby is also growing in parts of Europe, where there's a lot of metal in canals and other bodies of water thanks to centuries of warfare.

"England is very, very big for magnet fishing," Shoemaker said.
More information at the link.  I've wanted to do something like this ever since I was a kid in a boat spotting lost lures at the bottom of a lake.

Reposted from last year to add this display of magnet fishing catches:

Voter suppression technique analysed

by noreply@blogger.com (Minnesotastan)
SpinnyNuNu

As someone who can’t hold a pen properly some days, I would like to send a hearty, “Fuck you,” to Ron DeSantis because my signature is not going to be identical to what is on file. I signed my voter registration probably 15 years ago, so there’s no way that I could sign the same now. Also, signing at DMV on a digital pad with a stylus is only a tiny step above signing on one of those credit/debit machines. It looks like crap.

As explained by the Tampa Bay Times:
Handwriting experts say no two signatures from one person are the same. It’s why Florida election officials for years have used all the signatures at their disposal — sometimes more than a dozen — when they authenticate a voter’s signature on a mail-in ballot.

DeSantis wants to rein-in that long-standing practice. Vote-by-mail signatures “must match the most recent signature on file” with the state Department of Elections, DeSantis declared in February. A bill moving through the Florida Senate would make that one-to-one match the law.

Some election officials say limiting signature samples could make it harder to authenticate the identities of those who vote by mail, perhaps leading to more rejected ballots. Signatures change over time, they say, and are often affected by the choice of pen, the writing surface, fatigue or a person’s health.

DeSantis’ own John Hancock has undergone a transformation during his time in government, as demonstrated by 16 of his signatures compiled by the Tampa Bay Times from publicly available sources between 2008 and now...

The most recent signature for many voters may be the one they used when they signed their driver’s licenses at a Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles office. That signature is often recorded on a digital pad with a stylus — not with a pen, like how a ballot is signed.
My most recent signature "on file" with the state is the one on my driver's license, which is only two years old - but looks quite different from my current signature.
