Yakuza Direct

I was watching the US Nintendo Direct yesterday, so I missed this significant development in Nintendo Direct Gesture Semiotics over in the Japanese stream, with Satoru Iwata and Sega CCO Toshihiro Nagoshi revealing the Yakuza-themed Ring Flash Direct. GIF via HN3DS, because I tried and failed to make one of my own. :(

It’s to signify the announcement of the Yakuza 1&2 HD Collection coming to Wii U, an announcement that somehow manages to be both totally minor and totally desperate. Like, Yakuza’s a big deal in Japan, but these are old games, and even the HD versions came out on PS3 back in December…

The good news is that since Nintendo of America is also desperate for Wii U games, maybe we’ll get the collection over here! Both have been translated, after all (and Yakuza 1 fully localized with English voices).

I love the Yakuza games. Part RPG, part soap opera, part tourism, part brawler, part absolute nonsense…

Crowdfarter

Great, even Nintendo is exploiting crowdfunding now

I’m sick of hearing about big publishers taking advantage of services like Kickstarter, which is supposed to be for indies, or at least people who would have trouble raising money for their projects themselves otherwise.

And Wario is the last person I’d give money to. Hasn’t he already raked in millions from his WarioWare series? Plus he’s known for running scams, so I don’t trust this Crowdfarter site he just launched at all. His business plan sounds fishy, too — I’m not sure how he expects to make cash by asking people to tweet or like his site.

The rewards don’t even sound that great!:

At 50 KAJILLION coins, you will receive my voice as a ringtone for your too-cool-for-school phone. HOW AWESOME IS THAT?

If I help him make 50 Kajillion coins, the least I’d expect is a DRM-free copy of Game & Wario, a cameo or credit in the game, and a downloadable soundtrack. This is just straight-up greed and an abuse of his fans’ good will. It’s official, Wario now is worse than Penny Arcade.

Here’s a sad picture of Real Madrid’s unused Copa del Rey champions bus

by Brooks Peck

Real Madrid were understandably confident going into Friday's Copa del Rey final. Atletico Madrid had not beaten them in over a decade and Jose Mourinho had to win in order to avoid the first season of his top-flight career without a trophy. But then Mourinho was sent off. And so was Cristiano Ronaldo. And Atletico ended up winning the Copa del Rey in extra time.

As a result, Real Madrid didn't get to use their customized open-topped bus, which was spotted in the city on its lonely trip back to the garage.

Atletico did use their bus as they paraded through the streets on Friday, though. Here it is in all its glory...

Stop Signs Projected onto Water Curtains

by John Farrier

water curtain

Many tunnels in Sydney, Australia aren't tall enough to permit tractor trailers to move through safely. This animated gif shows a warning system that informs truck drivers when they're about to crash into a tunnel entrance. When sensors detect a vehicle that is too tall, the system pours water across the entrance to the tunnel and projects a stop sign onto that water curtain.

Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies will be a digital-only release this...

by ericisawesome
Yousef Alnafjan

Digital-only is definitely the way to go.

Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies will be a digital-only release this fall

Capcom announced that its newest Phoenix Wright game will release to the U.S. and Europe this autumn, but only as an eShop game! The company’s SVP Christian Svensson explains:

“Sorry guys, but a physical release is not in the cards.

Historically it’s been tough to attract long term retail support for Ace Attorney titles. With the release of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies we wanted as many people as possible to be able to enjoy the game for as long as possible. With that in mind we have opted for a digital-only release via the Nintendo 3DS eShop.

I understand that this decision may upset fans who wanted to have a physical version of the title to add to their collection but we believe this direction is the best to take.

We will be confirming details on the price point in the not-so-distant future which I hope will also shed more light on the strategy at play here.”

At least the publisher didn’t just skip the Western release altogether (like it did with Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth 2), I guess? Anyway, watch the first English trailer past the break:

Here’s a spiky-haired, 14-year-old David Beckham signing for Manchester United

by Brooks Peck

Before he scored that iconic goal against Greece, married a Spice Girl, won the treble, became the Pied Piper for MLS and got into the underpants racket, David Beckham was just a spiky-haired 14-year-old signing a schoolboy contract in a wood-paneled room with a man who had never won anything for Manchester United. Now, almost exactly 24 years and 4,872 Beckham hairstyles later, David Beckham is one of the most recognizable humans on the planet with a 14-year-old son of his own (who had a trial with Chelsea) and Sir Alex Ferguson is one of the most accomplished managers in the history of sports.

They're both retiring at the end of the season and they're both doing it as champions – Beckham in France, age 38, and Ferguson still in the Premier League, age 71. Though their relationship was marred by Ferguson kicking a boot at Beckham and opening up a cut above his eye before the midfielder left Man United for Real Madrid in 2003, there was nothing but hopes and dreams in that antiquated room with too many phones on the table in 1989.

But well before that momentous day, David Beckham had already made his television debut. Here he is at the age of 12 on Thames Television's daytime show, quietly talking about his participation in the Bobby Charlton Soccer School...

A lot has changed for Beckham over all these years, but his voice is still the same.

Juan Roman Riquelme is still scoring golazos for Boca Juniors

by Brooks Peck
Yousef Alnafjan

Riquelme is kind of a jerk, but he's pure class

Following a brief retirement, Juan Roman Riquelme is back with Boca Juniors and he's up to his old tricks. In the 25th minute of the second leg of Boca's Copa Libertadores round of 16 tie against Corinthians, Riquelme launched a shot from distance that floated over the diving keeper and into to far side of the net.

Though Corinthians would score early in the second half, Riquelme's goal proved to be the difference as Boca won by an aggregate score of 2-1. Things could've gone differently if Pato didn't have a costly freakout on a golden scoring chance late in the game, though. Have a look...

Sky Sports really wants you to know that David Beckham is retiring

by Brooks Peck

David Beckham has announced that he will retire at the end of this season and Sky Sports News was all over the story, making sure that no matter where your eyeballs are looking, you know the news. Except for the part of the screen with former England manager Steve McClaren looking forlorn.

Beckham released a statement on his Facebook page to announce his decision. Here it is in full:

I'm thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level. If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over one hundred times and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy. I'm fortunate to have realised those dreams.

To this day, one of my proudest achievements is captaining my country. I knew every time I wore the Three Lions shirt, I was not only following in a long line of great players, I was also representing every fan that cared passionately about their country. I'm honoured to represent England both on and off the pitch.

I wouldn't have achieved what I have done today without my family. I'm grateful for my parents' sacrifice, which made me realise my dreams. I owe everything to Victoria and the kids, who have given me the inspiration and support to play at the highest level for such a long period. I also want to thank Simon Fuller and his team for their continued support.

I want to thank all my team-mates, the great managers that I had the pleasure of learning from. I also want to thank the fans who have all supported me and given me the strength to succeed.

Nothing will ever completely replace playing the game I love, however I feel like I'm starting a new adventure and I'm genuinely excited about what lies ahead. I'm fortunate to have been given many opportunities throughout my career and now I feel it's my time to give back.

Beckham goes out as a Ligue 1 champion with PSG, rounding out his impressive record of winning a title in his last season with each of his four clubs (Man United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy and PSG). Beckham is also the only Englishman to win domestic titles in four different countries.

Google CEO Larry Page says his voice problems were caused by vocal cord paralysis

by Carl Franzen
Larry_page_large

Google CEO Larry Page has finally opened up about a recurring and noticeable health problem — what Google Chairman Eric Schmidt characterized as the loss of Page's voice last year. In a post on his Google+ page today, Page describes how he first encountered the issue "about 14 years ago," right around the time that he cofounded Google, when he suffered a cold and then a hoarse voice, from which he says he never fully recovered. As Page writes: "So I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with left vocal cord paralysis. This is a nerve problem that causes your left vocal cord to not move properly."

Page says the same problem cropped up last summer in his right vocal cord, causing him to miss Google I/O in 2012, but in both cases, no precise cause was ever identified. Page writes that in researching the cause, he was separately diagnosed with "Hashimoto's thyroiditis" in 2003, but that this condition is a "fairly common benign inflammatory condition of the thyroid which causes me no problems." Page says it's unclear if this is related to his voice loss, and that there is speculation both could be related to virus-based damage from his cold. But in order to help identify the root causes of his vocal cord paralysis, Page is partnering with the Voice Health Institute to fund a survey others who have suffered from the condition.

"I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with left vocal cord paralysis."

As for his own quality of life following this latest instance of vocal cord paralysis, Page says "after some initial recovery I’m fully able to do all I need to at home and at work, though my voice is softer than before," adding that because this issue has impacted his breathing, his speaking engagements and aerobic activity will be more difficult going forward. He also says "surprisingly, overall I am feeling very lucky." Read his full post over at Google+.

Message received: is BBM for Android and iPhone a sign of strength... or desperation?

by Adrianne Jeffries
Bbm_q101_2040_large

It wasn’t a complete shock this morning when BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins announced that the popular BlackBerry Messenger, one of the few remaining apps chaining BlackBerry users to the platform, would be coming to iPhone and Android in the form of a free app this summer.

"It’s been a long time coming," said Ted Livingston, CEO of the free multimedia messenger app Kik. "We heard that the project had started and stopped, started and stopped."

Former co-CEO Jim Balsillie reportedly pushed the company toward a cross-platform strategy before he stepped down in January 2012. The idea was scuttled in part by Heins, who rejected the idea in favor of pushing a lineup of new BlackBerry 10 phones, Reuters reported.

BlackBerry may have been inspired by the boom in messenger apps

BlackBerry may have been inspired by the boom in cross-platform messenger apps such as Kik, which is adding 200,000 new users a day, and WhatsApp, which has more users than Twitter. It may have been spurred to action by rumors of Google’s messenger Babel, which could be announced at tomorrow’s I/O event. Elsewhere in the messaging industry, Microsoft bought Skype, Facebook has Facebook Messenger and Facebook Home with Chat Heads, and Viber just expanded to desktop.

"It’s becoming very clear to everybody in tech that messaging is the killer app in mobile," Livingston said. "If you don’t have a messaging play, you’re not going to have a shot at being the center of this mobile era of computing."

Or it may be, as the company said, that solid sales and a return to slim profitability have given BlackBerry the "confidence" to start offering one of its most compelling services to users without requiring them to buy a BlackBerry phone.

"Users have been asking for it for years, it's not a new conversation," Andrew Bocking, BlackBerry executive vice president of software product management and ecosystem, said today. "Now is the right time. We've seen growing traction and interest in other messaging solutions. We feel that BBM offers the best experience to do that, so making it available on other platforms will address those needs."

"Users have been asking for it for years."

Is now the right time? There are so many competing messenger apps on the market that it may be tough to get users to pick up BBM. And if opening BlackBerry Messenger up to users on other platforms was such an obvious move, why didn’t BlackBerry do it years ago?

"They just had to reach some sort of a tipping point," Jan Dawson, head telecom analyst at Ovum, told The Verge. He suspects the move was prompted by the recent decline in the BlackBerry subscriber base combined with the success of independent messaging apps like WhatsApp.

"Many BlackBerry users are seeing their friends shift to other platforms and away from BBM, so the value of BBM has been diminishing," he said. "If they wait too much longer, it won't be worth doing anymore. They want to get in there while there is still time to build on the 60 million users they have, when everybody hasn’t deserted them."

It's been widely reported that BlackBerry is losing subscribers, although the company says its current 60 million base of BBM users is the largest it's ever been. Regardless, BlackBerry is making a larger play. "The first point is to grow an audience and to grow engagement with that audience. Once we have an audience established, we will have opportunities to monetize it," said David Proulx, lead of BBM for Android and senior director of consumer service business.

"If they wait too much longer, it wouldn’t be worth doing anymore."

BlackBerry Messenger is widely regarded as an excellent service that was far ahead of its time. It started as a secure, rich text messaging service that incorporated longer texts, emoticons, and pictures, all at the speed of an instant messenger. It caught on big in the finance world, where every Wall Street firm required its employees to use BlackBerry, and soon it became its own kind of social network. BlackBerry Messenger was the first service to incorporate read receipts, and although it never gets as much attention as Twitter, it was used by young protest organizers in the UK. BlackBerry Messenger even allows for face-to-face video chat. It’s every other messenger in one well-designed app — except it's only been available on BlackBerry, a platform that is quickly losing traction.

But at some point, mobile messaging took off while BBM was left behind, siloed in a BlackBerry world. BBM was a huge early success for BlackBerry, following email as the company’s killer app. BlackBerry was caught flatfooted by the iPhone, and the same thing happened to BBM with the latest generation of messaging apps. Just as BlackBerry 10 was a last-ditch effort to stay relevant, BBM's move to cross-platform is as necessary as it is late.

Exclusive: Google readies its Spotify competitor with Universal and Sony now on board

by Greg Sandoval
Google-music-3-stock-1024_large

Google will unveil new subscription music services tomorrow at the Google I/O Conference, sources close to the company said. The move comes after Google signed separate licensing deals with Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment for both YouTube and Google Play, music industry sources told The Verge.

Google plans to add separate music subscription services to YouTube and Google Play, the entertainment hub for the Android operating system. Earlier this year, Fortune magazine reported that Google had already struck similar licensing agreements with Warner Music Group, the smallest of the top three record labels. But landing Universal Music and Sony gives Google access to the two largest record companies, homes to such acts as Bob Dylan, Alicia Keys, Lil Wayne, Rihanna, and Jay-Z. Spokespeople from Sony and Universal declined to comment.

Google comes to these negotiations as a powerful player in music When Google rolls out the new services tomorrow at I/O, it will mean that it gets the jump on Apple, which is also trying to launch a new streaming-music service. According to reports, Google's subscription services would resemble Spotify, and offer on-demand songs that would be streamed to their PCs and mobile devices. In contrast, Apple is working on an online radio service that is said to be more akin to Pandora, the top webcaster.

Google comes to these negotiations as a powerful player in music. While Google Play is still a relatively new service, insiders say YouTube is a juggernaut. The user-generated video site sees more than 800 million unique visitors a month and music videos are among the most popular fare.

If Google rolls out the new services tomorrow at I/O, it would get the jump on Apple Vivendi, Universal Music's parent company, reported first quarter earnings today, and said that revenue was up 13 percent compared to the same period a year earlier. Digital music sales have now surpassed physical at Universal, with the split being 54 percent to 46 percent, respectively. The addition of Universal's catalog, along with Sony's offerings, for the forthcoming Google product could have a significant impact on competitors Spotify and Rdio.

Update: The New York Times is reporting that Google’s Spotify killer won't offer a free tier for its streaming service. The paper said it wasn't clear how much Google would charge, however. Most subscription music services charge about $10 per month.

Man dribbling a ball from Seattle to Brazil for 2014 World Cup hit by car and killed in Oregon

by Brooks Peck

A man attempting to dribble a ball from Seattle to Sao Paulo, Brazil in time for the 2014 World Cup was hit by a car and killed in Lincoln City, Oregon just 14 days into his journey. Richard Swanson, a 42-year-old Seattle Sounders fan, began his trip on May 1 and planned visit 11 countries during his year-long adventure. He maintained a website dedicated to the experience at breakawaybrazil.com. Sadly, he didn't make it very far.

From The News Guard:

According to police, Swanson was walking south along the south bound shoulder of Highway 101 near the south city limits of Lincoln City. Swanson was struck from behind by a 1995 Nissan pickup operated by Scott Van Hiatt, 52, of Neskowin. Mr. Hiatt remained at the scene and has been cooperating with the investigation.

Medics from Pacific West Ambulance transported Swanson to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital, where Swanson was declared deceased.

According to The Oregonian, the blue ball pictured right was found with him.

In a video introduction on his website, Swanson said he was a father of two adult sons and lost his job as a graphic designer last year. Unable to find work, he decided to carry out his dream of going to the World Cup, but since he had no income, he decided to walk. "Screw what happens, I don't even care," Swanson said of the plan. "As crazy as the idea sounds, that idea spurred on to the next leg of 'Well, since I'm going to the World Cup, I should honor it by dribbling a soccer ball.' Which even makes the trip even more crazy."

Swanson initially dismissed the idea as "lunacy," but later decided that "It felt natural. It felt like I was doing what I should be doing. That this was the next leg of my life." He sold his house and felt he was in a unique position free of responsibilities to make the trip. He was looking for sponsors, donations and places to stay along his route.

Here's the video:

Swanson was hoping to support the One World Futbol project, which made the indestructible ball he was using along the way. For every ball purchased through One World, another is donated to "disadvantaged communities around the world." If you'd like to help the cause, you can purchase a ball here.

Nokia's aluminum Lumia 925 is the best Windows Phone yet, but that's not enough (hands-on)

by Tom Warren
Xv05-14_11-28-4520_large

Nokia just unveiled its Lumia 925 at an event in London, and I've managed to take an early look at the handset ahead of its release in June. Nokia has swapped out a unibody polycarbonate look and feel for metal. Aluminum to be precise. The result is a stunning, slimline Lumia that weighs just 139 grams. It's really noticeable when you pick up the Lumia 925 for the first time. With a polycarbonate rear, and aluminum frame wrapping around the side of the device, it feels almost as plastic and lightweight as a Samsung Galaxy. But the aluminum makes it a lot more sturdy and brings it to similar design and hardware levels as Apple's iPhone 5.

The rear features an 8.7-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization and the PureView moniker, all packaged into a neat little hump. The sensor is identical to the Lumia 920 model, and most of the changes on the Lumia 925 are focused on the design and weight. Nokia has placed the micro-SIM slot at the top, alongside the Micro USB port, which leaves the bottom of the device clean with no ports. The rear also includes a dual-LED flash and points for the wireless charging sleeves to attach. The extra padding for wireless charging takes away from the design of the device, and the colors tend to look a little odd when attached to a grey or black metal case.

Nokia's Lumia 928 screen is a 4.5-inch OLED one, and it's encouraging to see the company move away from LCD. Equipped with Gorilla glass that curves ever so slightly, the effect is beautiful and the colors and blacks are reproduced well. Viewing angles are equally good, with Windows Phone's interface really taking advantage of the display running at 1280 x 768.

Windows Phone still holds back Nokia's hardware

When I first saw the Lumia 720 earlier this year, I declared it the best Lumia body yet at the time. Nokia's Lumia 925 design and body builds on the 720 and takes it a step further. With a great camera included, and Nokia's range of exclusive apps, the Lumia 925 is the best Windows Phone yet. The specs haven't moved on from the Lumia 920, but Nokia is improving the areas — loud speaker, camera, and design — that count. The only problem here is Windows Phone. It's a solid operating system, but it needs improving and a higher quality of apps. Nokia is once again fleshing out its Windows Phone range, but it's up to Microsoft to push the software forwards.

Mother 3's Fan Translators Say Nintendo Can Have Their Script For Free

by Jason Schreier

The people who translated Mother 3 to English say that if Nintendo ever wants to bring the quirky RPG to U.S. shores, the company can use their script. Free of charge.

Writing on the Mother 3 fan translation website, translator Clyde Mandelin says that if Nintendo were to ever localize the game, he'd be happy to give Nintendo the English script they released on the Internet in 2008.

Mother 3, you may remember, is the excellent Game Boy Advance sequel to Earthbound (which is called Mother 2 in Japan). Although Mother 3 never made it to the west, Mandelin and his team released a fan translation in 2008, and their script is great, full of wit and charm and ridiculous puns.

Earlier this week, Nintendo announced plans to finally re-release Earthbound in the United States: they'll bring it to the Wii U's Virtual Console later this year. This has led RPG fans to wonder: what about Mother 3?

Well, what about Mother 3? The chances of Nintendo localizing a Game Boy Advance game in 2013 are zilch, but some sort of digital release on the Wii U or 3DS eShop could do quite well for them—and earn some serious goodwill from RPG fans across Europe and North America. Nintendo would have to do far more than just swap in an English script, of course—localization is a time-consuming and expensive process—but fans sure would appreciate it. And I imagine a lot of curious gamers would want to know what the hype is all about.

Your move, Nintendo.

Google unifies Gmail, Drive, and photo storage: all users now get 15GB of shared space

by Nathan Ingraham
Google-drive-laptop_1020_large

Since launching Drive last year, Google has offered users 5GB of free Dropbox-style storage for documents and their Picasa / Google+ photos — but Gmail has long had its own, separate 10GB of storage. Now, Google is unifying storage across its products, something that should automatically make Drive a lot more useful to many users. All Google users now get a combined 15GB of shared storage across Drive, Google+ photos, and Gmail that can be used as they wish. If you're a light Gmail users, you can devote some (or all) of that 15GB to Drive — immediately making it one of the larger free cloud storage options out there.

Unfortunately, Google has also done away with one of its storage tiers — previously, users could add 25GB of storage to Drive for $2.49 per month. That option is now gone; the cheapest extended storage option is adding 100GB to your Google account for $4.99 per month. That's half the price of Dropbox's 100GB plan, and some recent improvements to Drive have made it even better as a Dropbox replacement than ever. As for those with the $2.49 25GB plan, a Google spokeperson confirmed that users will be able to keep it until they cancel or change their plan — but new users will have to jump in at the 100GB tier. As with so many of Google's changes, these new Drive plans will start rolling out to users "over the next couple of weeks."

Bringing it all together: 15 GB now shared between Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos

by Google Docs
Life gets a bit easier when your Google products work well together—whether that’s inserting a Drive file into an email or sharing a photo from Drive on Google+. As this experience becomes more seamless, separate storage doesn’t make as much sense anymore. So instead of having 10 GB for Gmail and another 5 GB for Drive and Google+ Photos, you’ll now get 15 GB of unified storage for free to use as you like between Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos.
With this new combined storage space, you won’t have to worry about how much you’re storing and where. For example, maybe you’re a heavy Gmail user but light on photos, or perhaps you were bumping up against your Drive storage limit but were only using 2 GB in Gmail. Now it doesn’t matter, because you can use your storage the way you want.
We’ll also be making updates to the Google Drive storage page, so you can better understand how you’re using storage space. Simply hover over the pie chart to see a breakdown of your storage use across Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos. And if you need more storage, this is your place to upgrade, with plans starting at $4.99/month for 100 GB.

Pro tip: This change means you’re no longer limited to a 25 GB upgrade in Gmail—any additional storage you purchase now applies there, too.

These changes to Google Drive storage will roll out over the next couple of weeks. Google Apps users will also be getting shared storage, so visit the enterprise blog to learn more.

Amazon launches virtual currency Coins

by Carl Franzen
Amazon_coins_large

Amazon has just debuted its own virtual currency, Amazon Coins, allowing customers to pay for apps on its Amazon Appstore for Android, as well as some in-app items. Kindle Fire customers in the US are the first to get their hands on Amazon Coins, as the company is giving all of them $5-worth of the currency, or 500 coins. But anyone can head to the Amazon Coins page and purchase Coins for themselves.

The e-commerce giant is touting the virtual money as an easier way to pay for things on its Appstore, and to further sweeten the deal, it's offering an escalating discount, up to 10 percent for $100 spent on coins, for customers who convert US dollars in bulk into Coins. There are several reasons why launching such a new exchange medium may be to the company's advantage. At the very least, it poses a new, more centralized challenge to the popular virtual currency du jour, Bitcoin.

Google launches 'Save to Drive' web button for quicker cloud uploads

by Chris Welch

Google wants the process of saving files to Google Drive to be as easy and convenient as possible; today it's rolling out a new feature that lets developers embed a "Save to Drive" button on any website. The company says this handy user feature requires only two added lines of HTML code, after which visitors can save relevant files to their Drive account with a single click. It's a small addition, but notably sets Google's cloud offering apart from Dropbox, which doesn't currently offer an equivalent for this functionality. "Save to Drive" is also seeing integration across a number of select websites, and developers can start adding the feature to their own web projects immediately.

Newt Gingrich is 'really puzzled' by cellphones that take pictures and needs your help

It's called a smartphone, Newt.

Screen_shot_2013-05-12_at_4

After losing his bid for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, and his chance to build a manned moon base by 2020, Newt Gingrich is turning his sights on pressing issues a little closer to home. "We're really puzzled," Gingrich says in a new video, clutching a small handheld device. "Here at Gingrich Productions, we've spent weeks figuring out what do you call this? You probably think it's a cellphone." It's a smartphone, of course, but at no point in the former House speaker's two-and-a-half minute video does he utter the phrase. "But think about it," Gingrich says. "If it's taking pictures, it's not a cellphone. If you can get Wikipedia or go to Google, that's not a cellphone."

"Think about it," Gingrich says, "this device is something new and different. I've been calling it a handheld computer, but I decided that's really misleading." Explaining that the device in his hand "has the computing power of a 2003 laptop," Gingrich extols its virtues, noting that "its real power is networking."

To fix the quandary, Gingrich would like to enlist your help to rename the mysterious technology. "We've been here before," he says. "When we first developed the automobile, it was called the horseless carriage." Of course, smartphone users now make up the majority of mobile users in the US, so there's not much confusion on the part of consumers. Still, Gingrich is determined. "I think that we need to have a new conversation about re-centering American politics and government around the kind of breakthroughs that this makes possible" — whatever this thing is, anyway.

Impressive

Sony's ratcheted up its water-resistant device tech a notch with the launch of the Xperia ZR, a new 4.6-inch, 720p Android smartphone that's waterproof to 1.5 meters (5 feet). Sony boasts that its new device will let you film your snorkeling adventures in full HD quality, with HDR in both video or 13-megapixel stills thanks to the Exmor RS image sensor -- there's also a dedicated camera button like the one on the Xperia ZL. The handset packs a Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core 1.5GH CPU, 2GB RAM, LTE, NFC, Sony's Walkman album and movie apps and a notable OptiContrast OLED screen with Bravia tech to reduce glare "even in bright sunlight." There's no word yet on pricing or availability, but as soon as we hear more, we'll try to prep you ahead of that next beach-bound holiday. Meanwhile, you can check the galleries, PR and video after the break for more.

Update: As Xperia Blog found out, the Xperia ZR is actually the international version of Japan's upcoming Xperia A SO-04E -- the one we saw popping up in the FCC database.

You need to see this incredible music video from the International Space Station

by Sean Ludwig

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield has charmed us from the International Space Station with music before. But his latest (and last) song from the ISS is a rousing cover of David Bowie’s classic “Space Oddity,” and the visuals alongside it match the tune perfectly.

Hadfield has been commanding the ISS during the past five months, and he’s taken some stunning photos, participated in fun science experiments, and shown how you sleep in space. Sadly, he handed over control of the ISS to Russian cosmonaut Pavel Vinogradov on Sunday eventing and will be returning to Earth shortly.

On top of the music video, Hadfield also recorded some final thoughts before he departs the station.

Watford reach playoff final on 97th-minute penalty double save and counter-attack winner

by Brooks Peck

Watford have reached the Championship playoff final and a chance at promotion to the Premier League after beating Leicester in the most stunning way possible. Leicester took a 1-0 lead into the second leg of the semifinal tie, but Watford came back at their home ground. With the aggregate score at 2-2 deep into injury time, Leicester were awarded a penalty for very soft foul/dive from Antony Knockaert and that's when things took a turn for the unbelievable.

[Also: Stoke players ‘decorate’ Owen’s Mercedes as retirement present]

The Foxes' advancement was virtually a sure thing as Knockaert just had to convert the penalty to seal the win, but former Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia changed all that by making the save and then also saving his follow-up attempt. As the home fans celebrated, the ball was cleared up the pitch and Watford instantly composed themselves to mount a counter attack. A cross was played in to Jonathan Hogg, who headed the ball towards the penalty spot, where Troy Deeney drove in the winning goal in the 97th minute.

Everyone lost their minds. Watford manager Gianfranco Zola got run over by a member of his own staff, but kept on celebrating. Leicester's players were understandably stunned and Sky Sports' commentator couldn't get his words straight. Here's his perfectly bewildered call...

Watford will now play the winner of Brighton & Hove Albion v Crystal Palace in the final for a place in the Premier League while Leicester are left to wonder how that series of events could have possibly happened in real life.

X-RHex Lite robot leaps across gaps in a single bound (video)

by Nicole Lee

XRHex robot leaps across gaps in a single bound

Move aside, Sand Flea, you're not the only jumping robot in town. The researchers over at the University of Pennsylvania have taught their little six-legged X-RHex Light to make leaps and bounds as well, making it one of a few bots to both run and jump effectively. While it can't spring as high as the Boston Dynamics critter, the X-RHex can cross gaps with not just a bound but a running gait, given enough room. It can also flip itself over, climb onto a ledge with a double hop and perform a leaping grab to something as high as 73 centimeters (28.74 inches). The X-RHex itself isn't new; the curved-legged machine has been around for at least a couple years, and even sported a cat-like tail for balance at one point. Still, the fact that the hefty 6.7 kilogram (14.8 pound) machine can now somersault through the air is a quite a victory, and one that reminds us of the impending robocalypse. Check the video below to see the bouncy 'bot in action.

Google Play Games allegedly leaks with achievements, cloud saves, and in-game chat

by Sam Byford
Googleplaygamesleak_large

Google may be preparing to unveil an Android gaming service in the vein of Xbox Live or iOS' Game Center. That's the indication from a leaked build of Google Play Services obtained by Android Police, which appears to reveal several details about a platform to be known as Google Play Games. The file contains references to achievements, in-game chat, matchmaking, cloud save syncing, and leaderboards, along with a green controller-shaped icon.

The service appears to have deep hooks into Google+. Google's social network looks to handle all user ID information for Google Play Games — for example, you can limit notifications to those sent from people in certain circles, and you'll be able to share scores directly on Google+. Android Police notes that most of this leak corroborates information obtained earlier from the Google Glass companion app; with Google's annual I/O conference taking place in just a few days, an official announcement may well follow soon.
