These artful outdoor shelters for cats—all designed by Los Angeles designers and architects—were available for viewing one night only in Culver City this past Wednesday as a benefit for FixNation, a nonprofit working to stem LA's street cat population through humane, non-lethal means. The show, titled Giving Shelter, was organized by Architects for Animals, a group that does events like this across the nation. A rep for the event tells us that after the crowd in attendance on Wednesday voted on designs from Lehrer Architects, HOK, Perkins + Will, and many others, HOK's creation was named the "fan favorite." After looking through the submissions, we think the competition must have been pretty close. *We've added three more images of the designs from Space Int'l., Pfeiffer Partners Architects, and RTKL.

Bats illuminated by lightning

From the lighting of the first grill at the “Great Tailgate” until the last seconds ticked off the clock during Sunday’s game – it was the perfect ending to a weekend of fun, football and fans as we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney.

As 20,000 fans cheered, the North Carolina A&T Aggies defeated their rivals, the Alabama A&M Bulldogs in Sunday’s match up between the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). But the game was just part of the reason these thousands of visitors came to Central Florida. They came for the annual celebration of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), diversity and football.

As a proud member of the HBCU alumni community, I was honored to take part in events such as a college fair, an ESPN career panel for local students, the annual band showcase and the Legends reception recognizing outstanding HBCU alumni for their athletic and academic contributions.

But that wasn’t the only reason I felt proud this weekend. As Sunday’s game was broadcast on ESPN network from Bright House Networks Stadium at the University of Central Florida, it highlighted our region to a national audience. It was thrilling to see my community and fellow cast members coming together for such a fantastic event.

Today, we were all big winners!

This Hurricane Marie that's off the coast right now is bringing flooding to SoCal beach towns and has resulted in more than 100 rescues in the last 24 hours at LA's beaches, but the towering waves it's delivered also means that surf's up. These two videos, captured by drones, show the intense surf conditions near Malibu's Surfrider Beach, as well as the crazy people who love intense surf conditions. The first video is is not just any ordinary view of the surfers and the sea; it reportedly shows renowned surfer Laird Hamilton "shooting the pier"—as in, surfing right through the maze of wooden masts that form the pier's base. WITHOUT DYING. (Another non-drone view of yesterday's feat is here.) No word on whether this footage was shot before or after he helped to rescue a fellow surfer yesterday.

What the second video lacks in stunts, it makes up for with intimate shots, getting in closer than a lot of the other footage that's popping up today. The camera captures several different angles of the surfers, the waves, and the spectators on the beach that collectively give viewers a good idea of just how many people called in sick to be at the beach.

We've seen dogs walking people down the aisle, but you probably haven't witnessed just too many horses in that role yet. Alcatraz accompanied Ashley as she and Justin were married at Aubrey Hill Equestrian Center in Florida last fall. Smart lady, Ashley wore sparkly Converse as she walked by her horse's side.

Judging by the tattoos and the fact that Ashley, you know, keeps a horse, we can gather that she's a fan of the equine kind. But it looks like Justin has his own creature friends: he took some time to pose in his wedding finest with a bird, a snake, and a lizard. Of course, if animals aren't your thing, stick around anyway! You'll come across details like Ashley's lace collar, black dresses and linens, deep-red roses, and flickering candles. All that and horses too? It's like we've landed in the best romance novel ever.
