‘Agent Carter’ Premiere Is Now a Movie-Length Event

by Germain Lussier

Agent Carter premiere

Fans who thought they were in a middle of a long, nine month lull between Marvel movies are in luck. ABC and Marvel have decided to extend the premiere of Agent Carter on January 6th to a two hour, movie-length episode. Below, read the brand new detailed plot synopsis and more about the new Agent Carter premiere.

Here’s the press release for the Agent Carter premiere, which includes the new plot synopsis.

Marvel Entertainment and ABC have announced today that the series premiere of “Agent Carter” has been bumped up from a one hour event to two hours! Originally slated as an eight-episode event series, “Marvel’s Agent Carter” will now have just seven episodes, including the extended premiere.

It’s 1946 and peace has dealt Agent Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy finds herself stuck doing administrative work when she would rather be back out in the field, putting her vast skills into play and taking down the bad guys. But she is also trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life, Steve Rogers – a.k.a. Captain America. When old acquaintance Howard Stark finds himself being framed for unleashing his deadliest weapons to anyone willing to pony up the cash, he contacts Peggy — the only person he can trust — to track down those responsible, dispose of the weapons and clear his name. He empowers his butler, Edwin Jarvis, to be at her beck and call when needed to help assist her as she investigates and tracks down those responsible for selling these weapons of mass destruction. If caught going on these secret missions for Stark, Peggy could be targeted as a traitor and spend the rest of her days in prison – or worse.

Starring Hayley Atwell as Agent Peggy Carter, Chad Michael Murray as SSR Agent Jack Thompson, Enver Gjokaj as SSR Agent Daniel Sousa, James D’Arcy as Edwin Jarvis, and Shea Whigham as SSR Chief Roger Dooley, “Marvel’s Agent Carter” was written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Executive producers are Tara Butters, Michele Fazekas, Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely, Chris Dingess, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Joe Quesada, Stan Lee and Jeph Loeb.

“Marvel’s Agent Carter” is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television and is set to premiere January 6, 2015 on ABC.

First Footage From ‘Terminator Genisys’ Teases Big Things for the Franchise

by Germain Lussier

Terminator Genisys footage

Thursday brings the first trailer for Alan Taylor‘s Terminator Genisys, a film many are hoping launches a whole new era in the Terminator franchise. Arnold Schwarzenegger is back as the iconic T-800 but all the rest of the characters – Sarah Connor, John Connor, Kyle Reese etc. – have been recast in a movie that, rumor has it, takes place in a parallel time line to the original film series.

In advance of that trailer, Paramount has releases a 15-second teaser for the trailer. Usually, these suck, but this one not only provides our first actual look at footage from the July a release, but also some incredibly tantalizing shots for any fan of the Terminator series. Check out the first Terminator Genisys footage below.

Here’s the Terminator Genisys tease.

First Terminator Genisys Footage

First up, we see a T-1000 and it looks very much like Robert Patrick. Not exactly, but very close. Next we see a bunch of people surrounding a large machine that has similar lightning to the time travel apparatus we’ve seen in the other movies. Odds are, this is our first glimpse at what that apparatus – so crucial to the franchise –  looks like. Then we see missiles flying all over the surface of the globe. This, of course, looks like Judgement Day. The day the machines finally got self aware and attacked the humans. And then, finally, it’s Schwarzenegger with his human tissue removed revealing that unforgettable endo-skeleton arm.

How do all of these things add up? We’ll hopefully be able to figure it out Thursday when we see the first trailer for Terminator Genisys.

Terminator Genisys opens July 1, 2015 and is directed by Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World). It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator from the first three films, Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese, Jason Clarke as John Connor, JK Simmons as some kind of cop and Matt Smith and Byung-Hun Lee in mystery roles.

Robert Zemeckis, Peter Jackson and More Sought For ‘Ready Player One’

by Germain Lussier

Ready Player One director

If you thought the idea of Christopher Nolan directing Ready Player One was crazy, you may want to sit down for a second.

Earlier this week, we reported that Warner Bros. was reportedly courting the Intersteller director to helm the sci-fi adventure film, written by Zak Penn based on a book by Ernie Cline. It seemed like a pipe dream – Nolan generally develops his own screenplays – but it hinted at the confidence Warner Bros. had in the new script.

Well, it turns out that confidence is very real. Ain’t it Cool News reports not only is Warner Bros. talking to Nolan about it, they’re also looking at Robert Zemeckis, Peter Jackson, Edgar Wright and Matthew Vaughn. Read more about the Ready Player One director short list below.

According to Ain’t It Cool, Zemeckis is the top choice because of ”how heavily his work is referenced in the book. It would be him revisiting the stuff from his heyday that we all fell in love with him for, and would probably the closest we’d ever get to a Zemeckis-directed BTTF 4.”

That’s true. The story is kind of Willy Wonka meet Tron meets The Running Man. In the future, everyone spends their time in a virtual world called Oasis. When the man who created this multi-trillion dollar software dies, he announces to the world he’s giving away his fortune. He’s hidden clues within Oasis and whoever finds them can have all his money. This changes the world as people devote their lives to the quest to find these clues.  Now, what really makes this cool is that the creator grew up on ’80s pop culture so to truly find the clues, you have to be a total expert in everything from TV to music and movies. People study it as a job. Cline’s book tells a story where being a nerd is the coolest thing in the world. With plenty of sci-fi action and excitement along the way. It’s really awesome.

Back to the short list, it’s important to stress that every studio, on every movie, has a dream list of directors and on that dream list are Christopher Nolan, Robert Zemeckis, Peter Jackson, Edgar Wright and Matthew Vaughn. It’s like saying, “We’d love Leonardo DiCaprio or Johnny Depp for that role.” It’s a nice thought, but it’s almost never the reality.

That said, if Penn’s screenplay is good enough to even consider going to these directors with it, that’s a win for not only fans of Ready Player One, but for non-fans because eventually they’re going to get a great movie.

As for each director’s availability, there’s a chance for each guy. Wright might be the least available because, not only is he sought for Star Trek 3, it seems like he’s already prepping a movie. You think those tweets from Cleveland and New Orleans, in December, were for vacation? Tax breaks, people!

Vaughn just finished Kingsman, Jackson finished The Hobbit, Nolan Interstellar, and Zemeckis is in postproduction on The Walk. That comes out in October so you’d have to think if he wants to do it, they would wait on him.

Of this list, if one of these directors actually does it, my money is on Vaughn. The subject matter and opportunity for crazy visuals is right in his wheel house.

What do you think about the Ready Player One director short list?

by Angie Han

Star Wars The Force Awakens SNL Parody

The first Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer has been the subject of intense scrutiny over the past week, inspiring all manner of detailed analysis, debate, parody and homage. It was only a matter of time before Saturday Night Live offered their own unique take on the Star Wars The Force Awakens trailer. Last night they did just that, with the help of guest host James Franco.

Check out the Star Wars The Force Awakens SNL parody after the jump.

Watch the Star Wars The Force Awakens SNL parody trailer below via Hulu.

The Saturday Night Live crew puts a geriatric spin on the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer. Han (Taran Killam) is hard of hearing and yells at other pilots to “go around,” Chewie has a cone of shame around his neck, Lando (Kenan Thompson) suffers from marital problems, Luke (Franco) has a thyroid problem — “just like my father before me,” Leia (Bobby Moynihan) struggles to program R2-D2, and everyone is confused by the ball droid rolling around.

The real Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters December 18, 2015.

Marvel’s Latest Leading Lady Is Krysten Ritter as ‘Jessica Jones,’ Mike Colter in Line for Luke Cage [UPDATED]

by Germain Lussier

Krysten Ritter

UPDATE: Marvel.com has confirmed Ritter’s casting and the title of the show, A.K.A. Jessica Jones. The original story follows and the press release is after the jump.

Marvel has yet to cast Captain Marvel, but they’ve chosen the lead of the Netflix series Jessica Jones. Krysten Ritter, best known for her work on Breaking Bad, Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars, has been tapped to play the lead character. Jones is a superhero with post-traumatic-stress-disorder who retires and becomes a detective, helping both regular people as well as superheroes. Melissa Rosenberg is showrunning the series, which will be the second of four Marvel Studios is bringing to Netflix. The first, Daredevil, is almost done shooting its first season. Read more about the Jessica Jones casting below. Additionally, it’s looking like Mike Colter will be cast as Luke Cage.

Deadline broke the news of Ritter’s likely Jessica Jones casting. Marvel wouldn’t comment as they like to announce their stuff on their own. However, we know Ritter was one of the actresses competing for the role from a few weeks back. She apparently won it when producers were won over by her chemistry with Mike Colter, who is likely to play Luke Cage.

The plan here is for Daredevil to kick of this huge Netflix Marvel plan, Jessica Jones to come in second, Luke Cage would be introduced on that show, then his show would start, followed by Iron Fist. Then all four shows would combine into The Defenders. (It’s also possible Iron Fist will come after Jones, but since Cage is all but cast, it seems like he’d come third).

Ritter is a great choice for the broken but smart and saavy character of Jones. Her work on Breaking Bad alone, where she could play confident but always feel vulnerable, shows she’s got what it takes to play the complex former superhero. She can also dominate a scene, as we’ve seen in her characters on Veronica Mars and Don’t Trust The B In Apartment 23. It’s like she’s been training to be a smart superhero detective her whole life.

The series will be 13 episodes that come to Netflix, likely, in late 2015. What do you think of the Jessica Jones casting?

UPDATE: Marvel.com confirmed Ritter’s casting, but not Colter’s yet. Here’s the press release:

Marvel and Netflix are proud to announce that Krysten Ritter will star in “Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones,” an all-new 13-episode series premiering on Netflix in 2015 following “Marvel’s Daredevil.”

Ritter will play Jessica Jones, first introduced in writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos’ classic ALIAS comic series. After a tragic ending to her short-lived Super Hero stint, Jones is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City.

“Krysten brings both the hard edge and the vulnerability the role demands,” said Executive Producer/Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg. “We can’t wait for fans to see her in action, coming to Netflix in 2015.”

“Krysten Ritter has the type of range, spanning the comic to the tragic, that makes for the stuff of the best Marvel heroes,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer/Marvel’s Head of Television. “As Jessica Jones, Krysten will bring one of the most beloved new characters of the past decade to life in a way we know will delight her longtime fans and introduce her to many more.”

Best known for her roles in “Breaking Bad,” “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23,” and “Veronica Mars,” she will next star alongside Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz, and Jason Schwartzman in Director Tim Burton’s “Big Eyes” this Holiday season.

“Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones” is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.

For more information on “Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones,” and the other exciting new Marvel Television series coming to Netflix, stay tuned to Marvel.com.

The actor will star in Marvel’s “Doctor Strange,” scheduled to hit theaters November 4, 2016. The film, directed by Scott Derrickson with Jon Spaihts writing the screenplay, will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” said Producer Kevin Feige. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”

Cumberbatch rose to international prominence with his critically acclaimed turn as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous creation in “Sherlock,” currently preparing its fourth season.
