Terminator Genisys Photos: Let’s Over-Analyze the Teaser Trailer

by Peter Sciretta

Terminator Genisys Photos

This morning, Paramount Pictures released the first teaser trailer for Alan Taylor‘s Terminator GenisysYou can watch that trailer here, in case you haven’t seen it already. And for those of you who really want to take in all of the visuals revealed in the first Terminator Genisys trailer, we have compiled a batch of high resolution images from the film to let you take in all the goodness one image at a time, complete with an image by image analysis by me. I’ve also taken the time to compare some of the events in the new film side by side with moments in James Cameron‘s original The Terminator. Hit the jump to see the Terminator Genisys photos now.

Terminator Genisys Photos

We get a look at post apocalyptic Los Angeles in the year 2029. We see a few Hunter Killer ships fly over the Hollywood sign, headed to the downtown city in the background.

Terminator Genisys

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Hollywood sign in a Terminator film; it also appeared in Terminator Salvation. But lets forget about that film for now.

Jason Clarke plays an older John Connor in this film. He is giving an inspirational speech to a large group of rebel troops gathered in an empty building.

Terminator Genisys Jason Clarke

You can only see a little bit of John Connor’s signature scar in this image.

We see John Connor manning a futuristic gun in a moving 4 x 4 vehicle.

Troops unload from a deployment vehicle as explosions from the war are seen in the background.

We see helicopters flying over the battlefield as plasma guns are being fired from both sides of the fight. An army of T-800 endoskeletons can be seen on the right while the resistance is trying to push the fight on the left.

More resistance soldiers firing futuristic weapons.

John Connor and Kyle Reese run through the battlefield as spark explosions cascade in the background. We can see some resistance troops taking out T-800s in the background. A Hunter Killer hovers overhead catching up to our heroes.

Something lands in front of Kyle Reese and John Connor.

This is Kyle Reese, played by Jai Courtney in this movie. He’s John Conner’s right hand man in the human resistance.

The thing that landed a second ago appears to be a Centurion, formally HK Series 12 Model 453 Type 900, a.k.a. Hunter-Killer Centurion.

Terminator Genisys

This is Skynet’s largest mobile, walker-style ground Hunter Killer unit. According to the Terminator wiki:

It is an autonomous combination platform packing advanced targeting systems, heavy armor and heavy firepower. Used primarily in an anti-vehicle role or deployed in small squadrons to hunt down and terminate humans, the Hunter Killer Centurion is the most expensive (in terms of materials, power and time) Hunter Killer unit produced by Skynet. Due to its large size and the tenacious defending of its posts, this Hunter Killer unit soon gained the nickname “Centurion” from Tech-Com members who had faced it. The Hunter Killer Centurion has a central waist unit that houses a miniature high efficiency fusion reactor and the transmission systems. The gun pods and body of the Hunter Killer Centurion have been designed to subliminally form a demonic face. This is a deliberate feature, implemented by Skynet to induce added psychological threat and fear in any Tech-Com fighters who face this unit in battle.

The HK Centurion was featured in concept art for Terminator 2: Judgment Day (seen below), but not in the film.

HK-Centurion

The model was seen in various comics (Terminator 2: Judgment Day – Nuclear Twilight, Terminator 2: Infinity issue 5), video games (The Terminator: Dawn of Fate) and novels (Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Dark Futures An Evil Hour).

A Terminator 800 model endoskeleton fires an endo-canon. The cannon shoots plasma and lights up red/purple.

We get a glimpse of the war from space as a ton of explosions are lighting up our planet.

ZZ69C63F18

“Mankind dies with us!” We get our first real look at John Connor’s signature scar in this new film.

Terminator Genisys Jason Clarke

Here is a comparison image showing Michael Edwards from Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Christian Bale from Terminator: Salvation and now Jason Clarke from Terminator: Genisys. Its worth noting that while the character was first referred to in the 1984 film The Terminator he first appears on screen in T2.

Terminator John Connor scar comparison

Glass doors open revealing a refrigerated room with legs of bodies hanging from above. This is the Terminator 800 model, Skynet’s first cybernetic organism with living tissue over a hyperalloy endoskeleton. One of the T-800s is lowered to the ground, ready for a mission.

ZZ2136D826

We then see a time displacement machine, sometimes referred to as a TDM.

Terminator Genisys time displacement machine

The film takes place in multiple time periods and we will see three TDMs in the movie. From the teaser trailer, we see one in the year 2029 and they would have to build one in 1984 to leave that time period (we see a more modern day 2015-ish setting later in the teaser) — so there is one more we don’t know of. Each TDM looks very distinct because of who created them and the fact they were created in their times with the available technology. We have never seen a time displacement machine in the films to date, only the time displacement sphere effect seen after someone has traveled through time.

We see a T-800 step into the TDM ready to go back to 1984 to kill John Connor’s mother Sarah Connor.

Plague – Watch news spread like a virus (app review)

by Jeff Sam
spread

The Plague is the latest new app to join the social media world. It almost reminds me of another app, Secret in which people post their thoughts anonymously. However, the difference with the Plague is when you post something, anyone can see who the author is. Once you open the app, it asks you to set up an account. You do not need to be linked to any other social media forums. Perfect way to start a new identity. That’s it.

Once you have registered, you can see posts depending if anyone near you has done so. Swipe up or down to read the next post. It also means you’re infecting the next user with the post. There are two buttons at the top of the screen a user can click. One involves checking statistics and other tidbits of information about any of your posts. The other buttons allows you to actually post your thoughts, pictures, and video clips.

I can’t say that this is the simplest app ever made. There are others that can take that honor. However, I like how once users share their post, one can see what part of the world has read their post. Notifications can alert you to any activity regarding your post. I also like the fact there is no need to worry about adding friends or having to delete or block annoying posts.

I do notice if there are any news stories you would like to share, you would have to type in the actual web link in its entirety. Once anyone clicks on the link, a new webpage is opened. A minor inconvenience as users have Facebook and other social media outlets that can share news. Plague focuses more on what you, as the users want to share. Another dislike is when I check to see if there are any interesting posts, what I get is a message that my “news board” is ‘Cleared’. That could probably mean that no one where I live has posted anything, or that no one has infected (shared with) me. I am sure though that as people are aware of this app, there will be more posts and more social interaction.

What we like:

  • Users can see how far their post has spread and infected other viewers.
  • Simple but a very unique concept that is not hard to set up and use.

What we do not like:

  • In order for links to work correctly, must type in it’s entirety and just make sure it is correct or the link will be dead.
  • As with many new apps, there are very few users so my news board is always empty, unless someone infects me with an interesting post. So I could be waiting for days.

There’s not really much to dislike about this social media forum. All in all, the concept is great and I hope that the app itself spreads like the plague. The larger the base, the farther news will spread, and the better the social experience will be.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Photos – Let’s Over-Analyze the First Trailer

by Peter Sciretta

Star Wars The Force Awakens imax

This morning, Disney and Lucasfilm released the first trailer for JJ Abrams‘s Star Wars: The Force AwakensYou can watch that awesome trailer here, in case you haven’t seen it already. (Or if, like me, you want to watch it over and over again.) And for those of you who really want to take in all of the visuals revealed in the first Star Wars Episode 7 teaser trailer, we have compiled a batch of high resolution images from the film to let you take in all the awesomeness one image at a time. Hit the jump to see the Star Wars The Force Awakens photos now.

Update: We have added a Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer commentary video after the jump.

Condensed Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer Commentary:

This post contains a ton of information, but we have condensed the best of it all into a trailer commentary for Star Wars: The Force Awakens recorded by David Chen. Watch that below, but also check out the rest of this post for more geeky details like does “Daisy Ridley’s character have a lightsaber on her speeder bike?”

Note: The trailer was released in both 2D and 3D.

“There has been an awakening. Have you felt it?” asks a voice, which we think is probably Andy Serkis. We don’t yet know yet what role Andy Serkis plays in The Force Awakens. Some other fans are theorizing that its Benedict Cumberbatch, who has been consistently rumored as having a part in the new film.

Star Wars The Force Awakens sand planet

We see a sandy desert planet — it could be Tatooine, or it could just be another planet in the galaxy that looks the same.

John Boyega Star Wars: The Force Awakens

And then a stormtrooper pops up into screen, he is sweating with his mask off but still in full uniform. Don’t let that Imperial Stormtrooper armor fool you. This is one of The Force Awakens lead characters, played by John Boyega. As far as we know he is a good guy. This shot also tells us that the Galactic Empire did not fall after the epic Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi – three decades later they are still around.

Star Wars The Force Awakens sand planet

Boyega’s character looks frantically around. What is he looking for? He seems to be in duress. We believe he crashed on this planet.

We hear an Imperial Probe Droid transmission sound at 00:23-:25. Is Boyega receiving a transmission or is an Imperial Probe Droid nearby?

We then start hearing trumpet music, very reminiscent of the Sarlacc Pit score. This is new John Williams Star Wars score.

Yes, that’s new John Williams score in #TheForceAwakens teaser.

— Star Wars (@starwars) November 28, 2014

ZZ1D7EF2EC

Notice the new back of the Stormtrooper armor, it is smoother and more modern looking — instead of a modular back plate it appears there is a magnetic attachment.

Another note pointed out by a reader:

That #TheForceAwakens trailer opening shot was reminiscent to the LOST pilot. Uniquely JJ Abrams in style. @slashfilm pic.twitter.com/N9CLpeoCAy

— Michael Raisch (@RaischStudios) November 29, 2014

Check out that Lost opening here.

Star Wars The Force Awakens ball droid

Star Wars The Force Awakens ball droid

We then see a new droid, rolling along on what appears to be the same desert planet. We will call him Ball Droid for now. He is incredibly cute and seems to be emitting R2-like beeps and bloops. Reportedly, this droid belongs to (or was created by) Daisy Ridley’s character. We’ve heard that she’s a scavenger of sorts.

In the background we see what appears to be abandoned engines. Could they be podracer engines? They certainly look like it. The green one on the left looks kind of like Gasgano’s and the rusted one the right sort of looks like one owned by Ratts Tyerell. Neither is exact though, as Episode I was decades ago. If they are podracers, this could be more evidence that we are on Tatooine. The sport is also big on Malastare, however, which has deserts and lakes. We know that Episode 7 shot on locations with both sand and water.

Star Wars The Force Awakens stormtrooper

The light flashes as we are now inside a ship filled with Stormtroopers. This is our first official look at the new streamlined modern-looking Stormtrooper helmet. Also, notice they’re all different heights. Each one of these troopers is an individual. The third one from the right is noticeably shorter than the others — is that a visual nod to a specific idea from the original Star Wars?

Star Wars The Force Awakens stormtrooper blaster

One of the stormtroopers readies his blaster. It seems to be a more advanced form of the classic ‘trooper weapon.

stormtrooper blaster comparison

Here is a comparison between the Stormtrooper E-11 blaster from the original trilogy and the one seen in the Force Awakens trailer.

Star Wars The Force Awakens stormtroopers

The door to the transport ship opens as a squad of Stormtroopers prepares to face the other side.

It almost looks like the dropship is over or looking out on water, but it may be just a trick of the light and some exhaust from the ship.

drop-ship-water

Star Wars The Force Awakens stormtroopers

What’s on the other side? We don’t know. It is very dark although we do see some lights.

swtfa-drop-ship-detail

What are these details in the background, beyond the edge of the ship?

@slashfilm :36 looks like moisture evaporators w/lights on them, seen through the opening door. Door seems similar to imperial shuttle too.

Watch All of the ‘Star Wars’ Teaser Trailers: Episodes I to VII

by Germain Lussier

Daisy Ridley Speeder Star Wars Force Awakens header

Much like Thanksgiving, the Star Wars teaser trailer has a long and hearty history. Even before fans knew what “Star Wars” was, Lucasfilm was making trailers to tantalize moviegoers with just enough information and visuals to get them excited. The process continued after Star Wars became massive, reached new heights with the prequels, and continues in 2014 as fans everywhere freak out over seven brief glimpses into the seventh Star Wars film, The Force Awakens.

If you’ve already watched the trailer a hundred times but still want more, why not check out the teaser trailer for all seven Star Wars films?

These Star Wars teaser trailers mostly come from the fantastic Star Wars YouTube page. Others are from Movies.com.

Revenge Return of the Jedi Teaser Trailer

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace Teaser Trailer

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones Teaser Trailer

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith Teaser Trailer

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer

The Force Awakens definitely shows the least of all of these trailers, but it’s also the furthest out from release. In the case of the prequels, the trailers were all about six months away from release. That gave post-production a lot more time to finish shots for a teaser trailer, like Attack of the Clones for example. It’s shorter than Force Awakens, but has so much more in it.

If J.J. Abrams had cut a shorter trailer with as much footage as the Attack of the Clones trailer, the Internet might have broken with all the speculation. I think – about 13 months out – this teaser trailer does exactly what it should. It tells us there’s a new Star Wars coming out, it has cool stuff in it and you’ll want to know more.

Which is your favorite Star Wars teaser trailer of all time?

Watch: Lego, Lens Flair and George Lucas Versions of the ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Trailer

by Germain Lussier

Force Awakens trailer parody

If you’re like me, you’ve watched the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer several dozen times and will continue to do so until the next one comes out. By now, you may know every second of the trailer just as well as the original trilogy and you’d be open to seeing something new. Like clockwork, the Internet obliges.

Several different parodies of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer have appeared online but two stand out above the rest. First is a super impressive shot by shot recreation in Lego. Second is J.J. Abrams lens flare edition. And third is a “George Lucas Special Edition” version that, much like the first trailer, brought tears to my eyes. This time though it wasn’t nostalgia, it was because I was laughing so hard.

Here’s the Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer in Lego thanks to Snooperking.

And here’s the Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer, the George Lucas Special Edition version. Thanks to timtimfed.

George Lucas Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer Parody

As cool as the Lego one is, and as funny the lens flare one is, I love the George Lucas version. It just gets so incredibly ridiculous that by that final shot, I was giddy with laughter. And that Sy Snootles cameo? Brilliant.

Here’s the official description of The Force Awakens:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, opens in theaters December 18, 2015. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan & Abrams, and features a cast including actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Andersen, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow. They will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker. The film is being produced by Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk, and John Williams returns as the composer. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is Episode VII in the Star Wars Saga.

Filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts on Why He Loves Star Wars

by Peter Sciretta

After watching the new @StarWars trailer a couple of times, here's what I think… #TheForceAwakens pic.twitter.com/uS3pI1nhu4

— Rob Tornoe (@RobTornoe) November 28, 2014

Jordan Vogt-Roberts is one of the most exciting new filmmakers. We loved his Amblin-esque indie coming of age film The Kings Of Summer, which was a breakout film at Sundance a couple years back. Jordan is currently developing a big screen adaptation of the video game Metal Gear Solid as well as Legendary Pictures’ King Kong prequel/sequel/reboot Skull Island.

Like many of the rest of us, Jordan spent this holiday weekend thinking about Star Wars and geeking out over the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer. He took to Twitter to share a story about his love of Star Wars. I try to explain to people why the year or two experience leading up to The Phantom Menace was still worth it despite the film not living up to expectations. Jordan shares the magic and power of the fan community, explaining it much better than I could. Read the Jordan Vogt-Roberts Star Wars story in full after the jump.

Phantom Menace teaser poster - Jordan Vogt-Roberts Star Wars

Here is Jordan Vogt-Roberts on Why He Loves Star Wars from his twitter account:

Honestly, the Star Wars teaser could have been set to black and the reprise of the Sarlacc Pit score would have been enough for me. Excited. God dammit. I can’t stop watching The Force Awakens trailer. What is love? Love is spotting and translating the Aurebesh on Oscar Isaac’s rebel jacket in the Star Wars trailer as “Pull to inflate”.

Seems like it’s that time again to watch the Star Wars trailer. See you guys later. I’m obsessed with the color grade & VFX integration in The Force Awakens trailer. The official stills look like gorgeous painted concept art.

Ok, here’s a story from when my best friends and I camped out in Michigan for Episode I to buy out tickets that will always stay with me. The theatre wouldn’t let people onto their property until 8am, so legions of Star Wars fans were forced to congregate in the adjacent lot. It was like burning man for Star Wars nerds. People waited all through the night, playing with lightsabers & beaming with hope for the movie. Because the theatre wouldn’t let people line up on their property until the morning, some people in the camp decided to organize a list. Suddenly they had too much power & were the lone arbiters of who arrived first. A nasty Empire / Rebel Alliance split was formed in the camp. The theatre managers eventually came out and met with the shady list holders. A massive meeting was underway. Diplomats were involved.

We waited with baited breath. Then a decision had been made. The theatre manager yelled out to the masses “WE WILL NOT HONOR YOUR LIST!!!!” Everyone erupted in applause as if the Death Star itself had been destroyed and Yavin IV was safe. It was an incredible moment. The theatre manager explained that everyone would slowly be able to WALK to the theatre and form a line when he said so. It was anyone’s game at this point. The list had been discarded and any spot in line was up for grabs. The pressure was on to secure a spot. The theatre manager shouted that we could slowly walk across the parking lot and form a line at the box office. That was a massive oversight.

The trek across the parking lot started slow. Then people started eying each other. We waited our whole lives for this. The pace increased. It turned from a walk, to a jog, to a full on sprint as everyone stormed across the parking lot. People were getting trampled and falling. It was awesome. My friends and I made our way near the front and caught our breath knowing we’d never forget that run. We spent the rest of the day taking to the people in line. We were likely the youngest people there but we made friends fast via Star Wars.

We finally got our tickets and it seemed like all was right in the world. That’s how I feel now with his new trailer. There’s raw hope. It’s hard to explain to someone who didn’t fall into the cult of Star Wars at a young age why it’s so important. But it shaped me. All grand philosophical reasons & my love of film history & it’s power as an art form aside: Star Wars is why I make movies. It changed me.

People now don’t understand what it was like to get ostracized for loving Videogames, Comics, Star Wars, Magic the Gathering. It’s different. I wasn’t ready to invest myself when the announcement was made regarding new movies. I had been hurt too bad. But now I feel like that kid running across that parking lot with my best friends ready to meet people who shared a love of something sacred.

So, after watching that teaser this is my long way of saying: I’m all in. Bring on the scoundrels and never tell me the odds! I don’t have a bad feeling about this. I’d rather dream that this new wave might not be a moon at all – But instead a glorious space station I’ll shut up now. That was supposed to just be a story about the line for tickets but then I got emotional about Star Wars as a whole.

Star Wars Episode 8 director Rian Johnson responded to the Jordan Vogt-Roberts Star Wars story:

@vogtroberts Great story.
