Gochujang Hummus

by aHeapingCup

Gochujang Hummus 34

Gochujang hummus.

I’m sure most of you know what hummus is. It’s a Middle Eastern chickpea/garbanzo bean paste that has been all the rage for a minute now. Gochujang, on the other hand, is not so well known. It is a Korean red pepper paste.

It’s basically the new Sriracha.

Except better, because it has such a depth of flavor while still maintaining its heat.

I predict Gochujang will be on the tip of everyone’s tongue soon, and by then you can feed your inner hipster and say, “Oh, Gochujang? Yeah, I knew about it before it was popular. Have you had Gochujang hummus before? No? Oh man, you’re missing out.” Say this as you sip your extra-hoppy IPA and adjust your non-prescription eyeglasses.

First thing you want to do is soak dry chickpeas/garbanzo beans (the smaller they are the better) overnight.

Gochujang Hummus 1 Gochujang Hummus 6 Gochujang Hummus 8

If you prefer to use canned chickpeas, that’s fine (I have some hummus recipes on this site using canned chickpeas, but after reading this post by a hummusoligist I decided to try the old-fashioned way and it is way better).

Waaaaay better.

Anyway, this is what you need:

Gochujang Hummus 14

The baking soda helps the chickpeas get soft when they cook, just go with me on this one.

After soaking the beans, drain and rinse them and then place them in a pot and add the baking soda.

Gochujang Hummus 20

Cover with water, bring to boil and then reduce it to a gentle boil and cook until tender, about an hour.

You want th chickpeas to smash easily between your fingers.

Skim the foam that comes up during this process.

Also, DO NOT ADD SALT.

Not while it’s cooking anyway, it will take FOR. EV. ER.

giphy-3

 Remember the movie the Sandlot?

Best kids movie ever. Hands down, I fucking loved this movie.

Remember Squints?

squints-o

“The great bambinoooo!”

Anyway, where was I?

Oh ya, gochujang hummus.

Don’t add salt because it will take forever for the chickpeas to cook, add it later when pureeing it.

Wow, I really got sidetracked there.

“Blame it on my A.D.D. baby”

Ok, so after the chickpeas are tender, puree with all the other ingredients (except the gochujang) until a paste forms, thusly:

Gochujang Hummus 22

At this point you have regular-ass hummus.

Pretty good hummus, actually.

You could stop right here, drizzle a little extra virgin olive oil and fresh chopped parsley and you are good to go.

If you like things a bit more spicy, add some gochujang.

By the way, this is a good brand I like to use:

Gochujang Hummus 25

I added 1/2 tsp at a time, blending and tasting after each addition until it was spicy enough for me.

In total I added 2 tsp and it was pretty spicy, a nice burn in the back of the throat.

*that’s what she said*

*monkey emoji hiding eyes*

Gochujang Hummus 30

Yummay

I like to finish all my hummus with extra virgin olive oil, fresh chopped parsley and some sumac.

Gochujang Hummus 33

It’s a tart Middle Eastern spice that is actually ground up berries.

It’s the perfect finishing touch and one of my favorite spices.

Gochujang Hummus 50

It looks like the red pepper hummus you see in grocery stores except this one is spicier and way more flavorful.

Also, it’s so easy to make.

Plus, getting some gochujang will be the best thing you ever did.

I use it in place of sriracha now.

You can mix it with mayo and make a quick spicy mayo.

Put it in burritos, eggs, mix it with ketchup for spicy ketchup too.

The possibilities are endless, go on and buy some!

How 'The Good Wife' Keeps Up With TV's Golden Age And Reacts To Audience Feedback In Real Time

by Lauren Duca
As yet another impressively long season of "The Good Wife" comes to a close on Sunday, The Huffington Post caught up with showrunners Robert and Michelle King. What will become of the show once Archie Panjabi (Kalinda) leaves? How do they change plot lines in real time? And how, in the name of merlot, do they keep up with TV's "golden age," in spite of the many restrictions that come with being on broadcast? Thankfully, you don't have to wait until next season to find out.

Will's death really revitalized the show. What will Kalinda's departure mean for next season?

Robert King: I think it’s going to be a momentary depression because Kalinda has been such a driving interest for lot of fans. She's a hard character to follow. It's almost like you never want to follow Louis C.K. as a comedian. You don’t want to be the second one up. I think the problem is that Archie’s great performance and Kalinda's strong character made such a gigantic impression on the show. But I do think there’s a sense that even when you lose a friend on "The Good Wife" you start to gain new ones and appreciate new ones.

Michelle King: Josh Charles' [Will] departure was two thirds of the way through the season, so we had a lot of episodes to play after he left. I think it won't be as hard because there are three or four months off between this season and next season.

kalinda

As of "The Deconstruction," Archie (Kalinda) and Julianna (Alicia) went about 50 total episodes without filming a scene together. Can you speak to why they've been kept separate? They only spoke on the phone in the aftermath of Will's death ...

Robert King: They are going to be in a scene together.

Michelle King: It’s all character-based. And you will get to see them together again in the finale.

Robert King: I think the real key is Alicia's scandal, and the aftermath has kind of left her a little adrift and created this new room for her to forgive and to apologize. So, I hope the viewers will like that final scene with them together, because both actresses did incredible work.

You're able to react to audience reactions quite quickly. For example, taking out that plot line with Kalinda's husband whom everyone hated. What kind of production schedule allows for that?

Robert King: In real time, there is probably two months between the writing of [an episode] and the actual showing of it on air. But that's different at the beginning of the season. The beginning of the season we work over the summer to load up on five or six episodes that come before the actual premiere. So, that's why with the Kalinda thing, you're right, we did react to the viewers. But it wasn't until the ninth episode that that reaction became evident, because we were so far ahead. Usually we're only two months ahead. So, you can at least get a sense of where the viewers are. You want the viewers behind in your dramatic telling. You want this sense of, “Okay, we've gotta slow this down" or "We've gotta be paying more attention to how our storytelling is impacting viewers."

Michelle King: And, of course, the editing is far closer to when the show airs. So, sometimes things get played with in the editing room to address issues.

Robert King: For example, here's the thing, with [Episode 20, "The Deconstruction"] we wanted an additional scene. We wanted to see the recorded side of a phone call. So, we went on the "NCIS" set last week, I think it was that Thursday, shot it and then dropped in the episode that Sunday. I mean, that's the closest we've ever been ... basically four of five days before we show the episode.

goodwife

What do you map out in the beginning of the season? There are definitely some long game narrative arcs. Peter's workplace discrimination comes to mind.

Robert King: You’re right about that one. Another one last season was the NSA. What we map out is we know we want to plant a seed that will grow into a plant later in the year, but you may not know how big the plant grows, whether it’s going to be a tree or just a sapling. So, for example, with the African Americans and Peter firing them, we kind of accidentally stumbled into that in that we had some great actresses we wanted to use and we realized they were African American and all playing sort of villains to Peter.

Michelle King: What ended up happening is they were guest stars doing arcs on the show, but they weren't series regulars. So we didn't really have a tie to their time, but they kept -- because they were so talented -- getting cast as regulars in other shows. So, we kept losing these actors and we had to find a way to get them off the show so they would be fired or they would take another job within the “Good Wife” world. So, after that happened a couple of times we made something out of that.

Robert King: I would say, to answer your bigger question, we map out about 50 percent of what you see. I would say about half. The other half we want to leave open to what happens along the way.

julianna

There are so many restrictions you have to deal with by virtue of being on broadcast -- product placement, advertiser demands, commercial breaks -- how do these obstacles affect your creative process?

Robert King: Sometimes I think fewer options actually create great creative decisions. And the panic that we feel heading towards the deadline, sometimes makes it more intuitive how you're writing and how the actors are acting and then the editors going with our gut on how we're going to put it together. I think sometimes that is its own excitement. It’s the excitement of, “Let’s put on a play and we only have a week to do it -- how are we gonna do it? Let's go!" And I know there are so many good cable shows. That’s not to denigrate. Oh, my God, “The Americans” was so amazing this year. Not to denigrate what people are doing. But there is a kind of excitement to be working so fast. And it also gives you more options to do something crazy like, “Let's do an episode that is all in Alicia's mind.” You know, when you're doing 22 [episodes], you're not as worried about the preciousness of each episode.

What do you think of the (absurd) idea that "The Good Wife" is a show "for women"? How do you think turning female-led entertainment into a niche market affects TV?

Robert King: We'd rather not have it thought of as TV for women.

Michelle King: We don’t think of it that way at all.

Robert King: But can we say, if you think of comic women, how much better they have it in this decade than the ‘90s. You know, the comic women now from Kristen Wiig to Amy Schumer and Amy Poehler. And then we're every week finding these great actresses that can play comic or broad. I think there’s one this coming week who's very funny. Anyway, I just think it gives women more options. In movies, they're seen as second or even third bananas. Or prostitutes or something that is a cliche of female parts.

Michelle King: Just looking at our regulars between Julianna and Christine Baranski, these are women that are not only spectacular dramatists but also so funny.

christine

Oh, totally. Also, I think it was last week, there was a scene with Christine and two other women over the age of 40. That is so rare to see. I feel like you guys should win something.

Michelle King: With Linda Lavin too! She’s so spectacular. I lay awake and try to think of ways to bring her back into the show, because she's so fun.

Robert King: But you're right, there must be a Bechdel test that is about that, I don’t know what it is.

8 Things You Didn't Know About 'Avengers'

by Bill Bradley
The new "Avengers: Age of Ultron" could totally pick up Thor's hammer if it wanted. It is predicted to eclipse $80 million in its second weekend, and it continues to run faster than Quicksilver on its way to $1 billion globally. In other words, this movie is worthy.

In addition to commercial success, the film has also had fairly positive reviews, but perhaps one knock is the lack of fan favorite villain Loki. That was the knock, anyway.

Recently, the Internet went wild after it was revealed that actor Tom Hiddleston did actually shoot some footage. It was just cut so the movie didn't seem too cramped. The Loki news was a shocking revelation, but as it turns out, there are a lot of other facts fans might not know about the "Avengers" franchise:

1. There are strict rules so Quicksilver can appear in the "X-Men" and "Avengers" movies.

Image: Tumblr

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were originally the son and daughter of the "X-Men" character Magneto. Because "X-Men" owns the rights to the mutant storyline, the "Avengers" version has the characters receiving their powers from HYDRA experiments.

2. Chris Evans doesn't eat his shawarma because he's wearing facial prosthetics.

After Iron Man hilariously suggests grabbing some food upon saving the world in "Avengers," the group is seen getting some chow. What you might've not noticed is Chris Evans doesn't take a bite. Entertainment Weekly reports the actor hid his face and wore prosthetics to cover up a beard.

3. Godzilla is in the Marvel universe and has fought the Avengers before.

Image: Imgur

Godzilla's opponents in Marvel comics have included the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Thor and the other Avengers. Also, as a side note, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch actors Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen play husband and wife in 2014's "Godzilla."

4. Marvel action figures are made with the actual graphics files from the movie for accuracy.

Image: Giphy

Hasbro designer Dwight Stall tells HuffPost Entertainment: "Once Iron Man is created in the new film, once Hulkbuster is created, they send the working files, which we share with our sculpting partners, and together we decide how we want to cut the articulation into the forms ... You can’t get a more accurate representation in a toy than that."

5. Toy releases also hint at the major storylines.

The @Avengers are back in #AgeOfUltron in theaters May 1! They’re ready. #HasbroToyFair #Marvel pic.twitter.com/jWpUzhiUf0

— Hasbro (@HasbroNews) February 15, 2015

Hasbro's Adam Biehl tells HuffPost that Marvel tries to let kids reenact major scenes from the film. This means designers work closely with filmmakers while the script is still being written to find things like "what the key beats are, who are the key characters, what are the key action scenes and what are the key costume changes."

6. A huge Spider-Man crossover almost made it in the "Avengers" movies.

Image: IGN

The Oscorp building, which is well known in the world of Spider-Man, nearly made it into the "Avengers" films. It was reportedly scrapped because by the time it was fully designed, the "Avengers" version of Manhattan was already nearly finished.

7. Lou Ferrigno is still the voice of The Hulk.

Image: Tumblr

The actor who played the Hulk in the '70s TV series told ComicBook.com that Marvel has a library of his "voices and growls" that they use on everything. He also revealed Hulk's famous "puny god" line from the first "Avengers" movie was all him, too.

8. Tom Hiddleston was almost Thor instead of Loki.

Hiddleston's screen test for the part can be seen on the "Thor: The Dark World" DVD extras. In an interview with The Guardian, the actor explains, "Every English-speaking actor over six foot was being seen for the part. I got down to the final five." By the way, that final five also reportedly included Chris Hemsworth's brother Liam.

In the end, it's probably good Hiddleston missed out on the part. As the actor says ...

Everyone's favorite crazy doctor who rides a motorcycle in a hospital will be back, as NBC has renewed The Night Shift! Okay, okay, none of the doctors on The Night Shift ride their motorcycle inside a hospital, but The Night Shift gave us perhaps the greatest promo photo ever and any chance to use it is a good one. See?

Team Night Shift. Team Night Shift.

The first season of The Night Shift was a solid success for NBC when it aired in the summer last year, but it faltered a bit when put in the main TV season for Season 2. It remains to be seen where NBC will schedule Season 3.

Navigate through Game of Thrones, Google Maps style

by Kevin Oliver
Navigate through Game of Thrones, Google Maps style

A fan of George R.R. Martin's epic world has made a stellar map of Westeros in the style of Google Maps.

This map, posted to Reddit by user selvag this week, shows a detailed contemporary version of the fictional continent from Martin's famed epic fantasy novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire, and HBO's venerated series, Game of Thrones.

Although a true Google Maps version of Westeros isn't coming anytime soon, seeing it evokes all types of wishful thinking. What if we could use Google Maps to navigate from Winterfell to King's Landing and select "avoid the Kingsroad," or find some good late night grub in Dorne? Alas, this isn't possible yet, but this fan-made map is enough to get the imagination going.

For those of you who wish to have this piece of technological fantasy in your home, MongoLife sells the map on Etsy.

New Netflix series from creators of The Matrix looks 'sens8tional'

The Wachowskis have had a pretty rough year, with their latest film, Jupiter Ascending, being somewhat of a critical and commercial disaster.

Thankfully, that hasn’t slowed them down, because if this trailer for the pair’s new Netflix series, Sens8, is any indication, the siblings are back in kick-ass form.

The show’s premise follows eight people from around the globe whose senses and minds become connected somehow, seemingly allowing them to pull from each other’s experiences, skills and knowledge.

Sens8 is due to arrive on Netflix in its entirety in all Netflix regions on June 5.

Middle-Earth has a High Oxygen Content, Study Reveals

by Cassidee Moser
Roumen.ganeff

Who is paying these "scientists"...

Ever wonder how Aragorn pulls off the insane moves he does in battle? A new study explains that it may be due to the higher oxygen content available to people in Middle-Earth.

In a study titled "Does the Oxygen Content of Tolkien’s Middle Earth Allow for Greater Endurance?," Richard Walker and Alice Cooper-Dunn of The Centre for Interdisciplinary Science at the University of Leicester attempt to provide an answer.

Citing incidences such as the Battle of Helms Deep and Aragorn's ability to survive the night tirelessly fighting orcs, the study found Aragorn's endurance was likely explained by a higher level of oxygen available for him to breathe, which would in turn afford a greater amount of oxygen to the blood for a longer, more sustained amount of physical activity.

Thanos has popped up more than a couple times in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Avengers: Age of Ultron's mid-credits stinger is his most important appearance yet.
