Sandra Bland's Death in Jail: All For Not Putting out a Cigarette When Illegitimately Ordered to by Cop

by Brian Doherty

The dashcam video of when and how the police ended up dragging Sandra Bland out of her car in Texas, then sending her to jail where she died, is circulating, and it's as appalling as anyone could have guessed.

This is the modern police state, as we've been warning/revealing to you for many years here. The police have an array of ridiculously petty reasons to begin interacting with us, all intended just to get money from us. (In this case, lane change with failure to signal.)

Once such an interaction begins, the cop can and will order you to do anything he wants for any reason he wants.

If you resist, he will physically assault you and arrest you and, in this case, essentially kill you as Bland died in jail, an alleged suicide now being investigated as murder, as Matt Welch wrote earlier today.

Here are edited portions of the dialog starting around 8:45 of the video below between Sandra Bland and Officer Brian Encina. The transcription is mine, and might be rough. It skips a bit, noted by ellipses. (You can hear it all yourself below.)

Officer Brian Encina (while writing ticket): You seem very irritated.

Sandra Bland: I am, I really am.....(something slightly unintelligible, about how she was just "getting out of your way")

Encina: Are you done?

Bland: You asked me what was wrong and I told you....

Encina: Mind putting out your cigarette please?

Bland: I'm in my car, why do I have to put out my cigarette?

Encina: You can step on out now.

Bland: I don't have to step out of my car.

Encina: Step out of the car....

Bland: You do not have the right....

Encina: Now step out or I will remove you...I'm giving you a lawful order get out of the car now or I'm gonna remove you...

Bland: I'm calling my lawyer.

Encina: I'm gonna yank you out of here....

Bland: Don't touch me, I'm not under arrest.

Encina: You are under arrest.

Bland: I'm under arrest for what ? For what?...

Encina: Get out of the car now!

Bland: Why am I being apprehended?

Encina: I'm gonna drag you out of there....I will light you up!

Bland: Wow...failure to signal, doing all this for failure to signal?

Encina: Get off the phone, put your phone down...right now.....

Bland: For a fucking failure to signal my goodness y'all are very interesting....feeling good about yourself don't you?....Why am I being arrested, why won't you tell me that part?.....

Encina: You are not compliant.

Bland: Not compliant cause you just pulled me out of my car....

Encina: If you would have just listened...stop moving!

Bland: I can't wait til we go to court...ooh I cant wait....You gonna throw me to the floor? Feel better about yourself?....

Encina: Now you're going to jail!...

Bland: You about to break my wrist....about to fucking break my wrists.....

Encina: You started creating the problems!...You are yanking around, when you pull away from me you're resisting arrest.....

Bland: For a traffic ticket...for a traffic ticket!....Gonna slam me, knock my head into the ground. I got epilepsy motherfucker...

Encina: Good, good.

A new female cop on scene: You should have thought about that before you start resisting.

Then the cop starts telling a citizen filming, for no legal reason, that he has to leave. That citizen was the source of the earlier video, which started with Bland already out of her car and under submission. This dashcam video keeps going, and contains later on what some people think are obvious edits in the video, with the same cars coming by making the same moves and cars straight-up disappearing before our eyes. That is all long after the portion I'm transcribing above, though.

[UPDATE: The Texas Department of Public Safety swears no deliberate editing was done, and that the obvious glitches are a result of some unspecified technical kerfuffle involved in uploading. I am not technically qualified to judge whether that's a load of crap or not.]

Ms. Bland never got the day in court she was, rightly, looking forward to.

The video. [UPDATE: The version I originally linked to was removed by user for some reason. Here is another version, same timing]:

Warning: Spoilers for the end of Game of Thrones: Season 5 follow...

Okay, here it is: Kit Harrington, the actor who plays Game of Thrones' Jon Snow -- a character that was apparently killed off at the end of the last season -- has been been spotted heading back to Belfast, Northern Ireland, where the sixth season just so happens to be filming.

Game of Thrones fan-site Watchers On The Wall (via MTV News) snapped the following pic of Harrington, who is arriving at the Belfast airport from London, sporting Jon Snow's trademark beard and locks (nicely wrapped-up in a man-bun):

Cause of SpaceX Explosion Determined

by Seth G. Macy

The unmanned SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket exploded nearly three minutes into its ascent into the heavens, and Space X now believes they have determined the cause.

At a news conference on Monday, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the preliminary conclusion is a "strut in the second stage liquid oxygen tank" broke free during the rocket's flight.

Musk said the SpaceX teams believes that the helium bottle broke free and twisted, which may "have pinched off the line to the helium manifold." This would have restored pressure in the helium system, but it would have "released enough helium into the liquid oxygen tank to cause the liquid oxygen tank to fail."

For future launches, Musk said each strut will be individually tested. "This will result in some cost increase to the rocket, but not, we believe, of a significant amount."

Ian McKellen Almost Didn't Play Gandalf Or Magneto Because Of Tom Cruise

by Erin Whitney

It's hard to imagine "Lord of the Rings" without Sir Ian McKellen's Gandalf, or "X-Men" without his Magneto. McKellan is those characters. But if he had made a different decision back when, the English actor might not have played either role.

While promoting his new film "Mr. Holmes," McKellen told People magazine that he almost starred opposite Tom Cruise in "Mission: Impossible II," which would've changed much of his career as we know it. "I got offered a part in 'Mission: Impossible II' with Tom Cruise, but they wouldn’t let me see the whole script because I might have spilled the beans," the actor told the magazine.

He eventually turned down the part, since he was limited to reading only his character's scenes -- not enough to properly judge the script. The very next day, however, Bryan Singer offered McKellen the role of Magneto, shortly followed by Peter Jackson offering him Gandalf. "I said yes to both," McKellen told People.

Then scheduling conflicts almost prevented McKellen from donning his iconic wizard staff and red mutant suit. When "X-Men" overran schedule, McKellen almost skipped out on Gandalf until Jackson and Singer worked with him to make both roles possible. "Meanwhile," McKellen said, "'Mission Impossible' was put off, put off, put off. And if I had decided to do that, I wouldn’t have been in 'X-Men' and I wouldn't have been in 'Lord of the Rings.'" The actor says it was all just luck, but we think he was born to be a wizard and a mutant.

Apple Patents Ads Based On Your Bank Balances

Roumen.ganeff

Wait, what?

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has awarded Apple a patent on targeted ad technology based on how much money is in your bank account. Just when you thought Apple wasn't integrated into your life enough, the company just won a patent for a system that targets ads based on how much money people have. This is the same Apple that's promised not to monetize your data. As Tim Cook said last year: "You're not our product." Until you are, apparently. Comments

Dave Grohl's Doctor Joined The Foo Fighters To Cover The White Stripes

by Erin Whitney

typical orthopedic surgeon duties

Orthopedic doctors can be rock 'n' roll stars too, if just for one night.

During the Foo Fighters' show at Fenway Park in Boston on Sunday, Dave Grohl's doctor joined the band for a White Stripes cover -- typical orthopedic surgeon duties. Dr. Lew C. Schon is the physician who performed surgery on Grohl's leg, which the frontman broke during a stage-jump in Sweden last month.

During the Foo Fighters' stop in Boston, Schon came on stage to help cover The White Stipes' "Seven Nation Army." While Grohl performed from his light-up guitar throne, which he thought up while on morphine in the hospital, the doctor joined his patient on lead vocals for the White Stripes classic, and totally killed it. (Watch out, Jack White.)

After Schon left the stage, Grohl explained to the crowd who he was."Holy shit, that's actually my doctor," Grohl said. "What a badass." If you need orthopedic work and want to do karaoke after, Dr. Schon is your guy.

Lucasfilm Delivered One of the Best Comic-Con Surprises of All Time

by Ethan Anderton

Star Wars concert

At Comic-Con in San Diego, the panel for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a nice blend of the new and old. New cast members John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie and Domhnall Gleeson were on hand, and classic heroes Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were also present. Their presence made for a fun, exciting panel, even if the footage shown wasn’t exclusive to the convention itself.

But the payoff came when director J.J. Abrams started talking about the music of Star Wars. Upon getting affirmation that the Hall H audience loved the music of Star Wars, Abrams delivered some incredible news. The entire crowd of Hall H, about 6,500 people, would be leaving the convention center to attend a live Star Wars concert.

Find out more about the Star Wars Comic Con concert after the jump!

The crowd went absolutely nuts. All were excited, many were confused, some still couldn’t believe it. But Abrams was not joking. A mass exodus of Star Wars fans was led by First Order Stormtroopers to the outdoor San Diego Symphony behind the convention center, along with Minnesota man Kevin Doyle, who marched 654 miles to Comic-Con in honor of his late wife.

This feat was pretty impressive, especially when you consider that Comic-Con can’t even figure out how to create an efficient system for getting people into Hall H. It takes Comic-Con over three hours to hand out wristbands to people waiting in line to get into Hall H, but the entirety of the crowd made it from the convention center into the symphony venue in just over an hour.

Oh man, this is really happening. #SDCC #StarWars pic.twitter.com/OIr1vBi1yP

— Ethan Anderton (@Ethan_Anderton) July 11, 2015

Upon arrival, everyone received one of Hasbro’s toy lightsabers and packed into the outdoor venue. J.J. Abrams took the stage yet again with Kathleen Kennedy to introduce the cast of The Force Awakens one more time.

And after some lightsaber clashing between the actors and the front row crowd, we were all ready to hear a live orchestra play Star Wars themes hand-picked by the legendary John Williams. Sadly, the composer wasn’t in attendance to conduct the orchestra, but he sent a video message to introduce the concert for fans:

Hearing Star Wars music live with a group of hardcore fans is truly magical, especially when it’s such a big surprise at Comic-Con. As you can see, the concert began with a bang with The Imperial March, moving through a few other soft themes, including Leia’s, not to mention the exciting track from the asteroid field scene in The Empire Strikes Back.

But it was the finale of the iconic Star Wars theme that worked everyone into loud cheers, waving their ignited lightsabers in the sky, as massive amounts of fireworks in the harbor were launched in coordination with the music. Here’s the finale we all experience with the biggest smiles on our faces:

The primary Star Wars: The Force Awakens panel was fine (you can watch it here), even though no real footage from the actual movie was shown (there’s a behind the scenes sizzle reel to watch), but this amazing surprise event for fans who waited hours and hours to get into Hall H certainly made it worth the wait.

This is what Comic-Con should be about. While it’s become very commercialized and coordinated as a promotional venue for new movies and TV shows, it should really be about fan appreciation. Studios rarely come with major surprises like this for fans anymore, and even though it’s cool to see exclusive footage in these panels, that’s something the ends up getting leaked all the time now. So it’s time to change the game and give fans something to remember.

Lucasfilm did something for fans that was truly a once in a lifetime experience, and other studios should take a note on how to wow and satisfy their fans with something that’s memorable and fun outside of the usual hype machine elements. It will undoubtedly be an experience that stays with me for the rest of my life. And hopefully we’ll feel the same way about Star Wars: The Force Awakens when it arrives on December 18th.

‘Suicide Squad’ Trailer: The Comic Con Sensation Gets an Official Release

by Russ Fischer

Suicide Squad trailer

The Suicide Squad trailer was one of the big events at Comic Con during the Saturday morning Warner Bros. panel in Hall H. The footage was quickly bootlegged, and became a sensation online. Now writer/director David Ayer has worked some magic to get Warner Bros. to do an official release, and you can watch the Suicide Squad trailer — not bootlegged, and in great quality — below.

Previously, Ayer had expressed disappointment at the bootlegs going around.

Shame our sneak peek Hall H footage was leaked. #notcool it's unfair to the fans who waited in line. And not how I intended folks to see it.

— David Ayer (@DavidAyerMovies) July 13, 2015

Warner Bros. was frustrated by the leak, too, though the studio shouldn’t be surprised because this always happens. Today Sue Kroll, the studio’spresident of Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, told Deadline,

Warner Bros. Pictures and our anti-piracy team have worked tirelessly over the last 48 hours to contain the Suicide Squad footage that was pirated from Hall H on Saturday. We have been unable to achieve that goal. Today we will release the same footage that has been illegally circulating on the web, in the form it was created and high quality with which it was intended to be enjoyed. We regret this decision as it was our intention to keep the footage as a unique experience for the Comic Con crowd, but we cannot continue to allow the film to be represented by the poor quality of the pirated footage stolen from our presentation.

Do you think a studio exec likes being forced into something they didn’t plan? Better believe they don’t.

So Warner Bros. has given in and released the footage, which only helps legitimize the bootlegs as a tool to encourage such a response by the studio. We’ll see how this works out in the future — the obvious move by Warner Bros. is simply to avoid showing such footage at Comic Con in the future. We won’t know whether the studio will do such a thing until next year, but if Comic Con 2016 rolls around and WB skimps on presentations, this will be why.

Trailer via David Ayer. Suicide Squad opens on August 5, 2016. The film is still shooting, so this is a very early look at footage.

Tom Cruise Is Terrified in ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’ Plane Stunt Featurette

by Russ Fischer

Rogue Nation Airplane Stunt

The mythology of Tom Cruise expands in a new Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation featurette that shows a glimpse into the preparation and shoot of a stunt that had Cruise strapped to the site of an airplane in flight. We’ve known about the stunt for over a year, as paparazzi photos and video captured the shoot. The scene plays heavily in marketing for the film, with posters and trailers showing wind-battered Cruise strapped to the plane’s door.

And yet it is still neat to hear him talk about being terrified of doing the shot, because it’s great to know that even megastars who can buck the standard Hollywood insurance policy get scared before doing something insane. And even with multiple safety straps and a great rigging and stunt team, this is still insane.

Check out the Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation airplane stunt featurette below.

Eight takes. That’s great. I’d love to know if the fear decreased after the first take, or if doing each one was consistently terrifying.

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation opens on July 31. Featurette via Paramount.

With the IMF disbanded and Ethan (Tom Cruise) out in the cold, the team now faces off against a network of highly skilled special agents, the Syndicate. These highly trained operatives are hellbent on creating a new world order through an escalating series of terrorist attacks. Ethan gathers his team and joins forces with disavowed British agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), who may or may not be a member of this rogue nation, as the group faces its most impossible mission yet. Starring Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Sean Harris, Simon McBurney, Zhang Jingchu and Alec Baldwin.

The film is directed by Christopher McQuarrie, with a screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie and story by Christopher McQuarrie and Drew Pearce. Based on the television series created by Bruce Geller. Produced by Tom Cruise, J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger. Executive produced by Jake Myers.

"They will be subsidizing scroungers, lounging in cafes on the Mediterranean beaches.

Monetary union, in the end, will result in a gigantic blackmailing operation.

When we Germans demand monetray discipline, other countries will blame their financial woes on that same discipline, and by extension, on us. More they will perceive us as a kind of economic policeman.

We risk once again becoming the most hated people in Europe."

There's One Huge Easter Egg In 'Ant-Man' You Might've Missed

by Bill Bradley

For such a tiny superhero, "Ant-Man" is a big movie.

(Warning: Major "Ant-Man" spoilers!)

The film introduces us to the Ant-Man backstory, connects perfectly into the current Marvel timeline and even ties up some loose ends from another Marvel movie, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." That moment happens in the post-credit scene, which Marvel president Kevin Feige already revealed is a peek at "Captain America: Civil War," something which "Ant-Man" director Peyton Reed also confirmed to The Huffington Post. But there's something else you may have missed that's an even bigger deal.

"Ant-Man" has Marvel's first big Spider-Man reference.

Image: Giphy

OK, gosh, hold your horses.

We know Spider-Man is reportedly showing up in future Marvel movies, but rumors of an Easter egg in "Ant-Man" started getting around even before the first screenings. Spider-Man isn't mentioned by name in the film, so we asked Reed for his thoughts.

"There is one Spider-Man reference," Reed confirmed to HuffPost. "It really sort of became organic to our story."

Reed said it all happened because of Ant-Man's earlier encounter with another Marvel superhero, Falcon, which the director called a true "wish fulfillment" to see those two go against each other. As those who've seen the film know, this encounter results in Falcon looking for Ant-Man at the end of the movie. Then, when Michael Peña’s character, Luis, is telling Ant-Man, aka Paul Rudd, that someone's looking for him, he mentions a female journalist.

Reed said, "This young journalist character, she’s sort of got this inside track and she makes a reference to [Falcon], 'Okay, you’re looking for this guy. What are his powers? You gotta be more specific because we’ve got guys that do this and that,' and it just made sense for the story."

Image: Tumblr

When you watch the movie, look out for that moment. Like we said, she doesn't mention him by name, but she lists specific powers that should now have your Spidey senses tingling.

The Oscorp Tower from the "Spider-Man" universe reportedly almost made it into the first "Avengers" film, and the building may or may not have made it into "Avengers: Age of Ultron," depending on who you ask. Still, this is the first no-doubt-about-it reference to our own friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

And that makes us feel pretty good.

Emilia Clarke Reveals 'Game Of Thrones' Season 6 Is Its Most Shocking Yet

by Bill Bradley

Who knows if Daenerys Targaryen will "break the wheel" on "Game of Thrones," but Emilia Clarke has a good shot at breaking the Internet.

tv show gifs

Clarke, who plays Daenerys on the show, is changing from the Mother of Dragons to the Mother of Spoilers lately. The actress has already hinted at her doubts that Jon Snow is truly gone from "Game of Thrones," and now she is giving the inside scoop on Season 6.

It was revealed at Comic-Con that the cast has already received scripts for the upcoming season and in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Clarke couldn't hold back back her excitement. While some seasons have gotten off to slow starts in order to introduce background information, the actress said that's not the case in Season 6:

This season coming up, that we’re about to film, there’s none of that. It’s just go, go, go, go. Shocking moment to shocking moment. Epic moment to epic moment. It’s mental; it’s epic. And definitely Dany’s a part of it.

Clarke was recently nominated for an Emmy along with co-star Lena Headey, who has also teased shocking moments in Season 6. “Every year you go ‘What?! Whaaaat!?’ and having read these, it’s the same feeling again," she told Variety. "There’s a lot to be very excited about."

Season 5 of "Game of Thrones" ended with the show basically caught up to the books, so the future of the characters and the series is largely unknown. There is one thing you can almost count on, though. Filming locations and character casting calls have caused wide speculation that Season 6 might finally reveal who Jon Snow's true parents are.

Could this be one of the shocking moments Clarke is teasing? Or perhaps she already knows about the future of Jon Snow?

The good news is Season 6 is coming. The bad news is it can't get here fast enough.

11 Coolest Ant-Man Easter Eggs

by Scott Collura

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Ant-Man!

Marvel’s Ant-Man has arrived! And in addition to all those creepy-crawlies he travels with, the tiniest Avenger has also brought a bunch of sweet Easter Eggs with him.

Here’s our list of the 11 coolest Easter Eggs, references and trivia that we’ve uncovered in Ant-Man!

The film opens with a flashback to the late 1980s, where Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym has a falling out with several senior members of Shield. That includes Hayley Atwell and John Slattery -- both in age make-up -- as older versions of Peggy Carter and Howard Stark. Good to see they were still fighting the good fight back in the age of Duran Duran! Oh, and by the way, this scene takes place at the Triskelion -- the Shield headquarters destroyed in Winter Soldier. Only here, it’s brand new and still being constructed.

Interview: ‘Ant-Man’ Director Peyton Reed Talks Back to the Future, Beavis and Butthead and Fantastic Four

by Peter Sciretta

Peyton Reed Ant-Man interview

A couple weeks ago I got a chance to sit down with director Peyton Reed and talk about his new film Ant-Man. I’ve been a fan of Reed for a while now, from his fun 2000 comedy Bring It On (which was basically Pitch Perfect with Cheerleading) to his work within the Back to the Future franchise (he was involved in the Universal Studios ride, the animated series, and even directed the behind the scenes documentaries for the sequels). Here are some of the things I talked to Peyton Reed about:

  • His first attempt trying to direct a Marvel film in 2003 with a Fantastic Four adaptation that never happened
  • Ant-Man looks like it has the most VFX shots out of any of the Marvel films, But it does’t
  • How they made the microscopic scenes so photorealistic
  • What he believes he brought to the movie that wasn’t in Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish‘s draft
  • Why other Marvel characters were added to the story (possible spoiler warning, although its shown in tv commercials and trailers)
  • How Peyton ended up doing voice work on episodes of Beavis and Butthead
  • Will he be involved in any of the Back to the Future 30th Anniversary festivities
  • How Did Marty McFly influence Ant-Man

You can read about all of that and much more in my Peyton Reed Ant-Man interview, after the jump.

Peyton Reed Ant-Man Interview

Bring It On

PETER: A big fan of Bring It On.

PEYTON: Oh thank you very much. It’s kind of a superhero movie, right?

PETER: Well you know what, I think–

PEYTON: They do have costumes.

PETER: Yeah, they do. I think some of my readers might be surprised to learn that this isn’t the first time that you’ve been attached to a Marvel movie.

PEYTON: Right.

Fantastic Four

PETER: Can you talk about that?

PEYTON: Yeah. In 2003, I was finishing my movie, Down With Love, my second movie at Fox. And they announced they were gonna make a Fantastic Four movie. And I was a Marvel Comics obsessive as a kid. Fantastic Four to me was always sort of the crown jewel of the Marvel Comics world. And so I went in. And I pitched the movie. And here’s how nerdy I was. I took all four of my Mego eight inch Fantastic Four action figures into this meeting with Tom Rothman. And I think at the time Avi Arad. And I think, I know Kevin Feige was involved at the time. I don’t know if he was in the Fox meeting. But I took them in as a symbol of my nerd cred. But I just, I talked about everything I loved about Fantastic Four. I got the job and developed that movie there for the better part of a year. And I worked with I think two or three different writers at the time. It became apparent to me that I think Fox did not wanna make the kind of Fantastic Four movie I wanted to make at the time. And Marvel at Fox at that time was radically different than Marvel Studios is in 2015. It was the entire landscape has changed. So it was something that was very, very hard to–

PETER: What did they want? They wanted more accessible, you wanted more comic looking or?

PEYTON: Well, you know, they were chasing a release date and, you know, we were developing the movie. They wouldn’t release the money for effects R and D, because I said, whatever version of the movie you have is gonna have a Human Torch, a Thing and a… And it just became obvious that they at that time in my opinion were not gonna treat it like the A list property that it was.

Ant-Man ant still

PETER: You talked about special effects. And I feel like watching this movie it looks like it has the most visual effects or C.G. out of any of the Marvel movies so far. Is that the case?

PEYTON: Yeah, it’s interesting, I think if you do a number count in Ant-Man there are probably between 15 and 1600 visual effects movies. I think in Age of Ultron there were like somewhere between 22 and 2400. Like far more, significantly more effects. But I think the effects in Ant-Man, you know, because they are, they tend to be longer shots. Like when Scott first shrinks in the bathtub, you know, the camera follows him down and goes down and the challenge in these specific types of effects for me was they have to be photorealistic. If we’re doing a shrinking movie in the year 2015, we have to set the bar. And it’s gotta be photorealistic and we gotta really put the audience down there with Scott Lang when he’s shrinking.

ant-man

PETER: How do you make it photorealistic then?

PEYTON: Well I’ll tell you we did a weird combination of motion picture macro photography, which meant, you know, shooting surfaces and miniature sets with these insane lenses. Shooting still macro photography. Where like if there was a scene where Ant-Man was gonna run across the table and leap over my iPhone, we would have a crew shoot this with stills, like thousands of stills. So that we would have a very tactile photo real version of it. But we could recreate it digitally and be able to move the camera around that environment. So we put Paul and Corey in motion capture suits and shot them or captured them digitally and put them in. And then we did lots of actual photography tests in prep. We shot real ants just to see how they moved and how they reacted to light. And we would shoot things like dust and explosions at high speed to see how that would play out. And water. What does water move like?

Ant-Man water in bath tub

PETER: That sequence with the water is amazing.

PEYTON: Yeah. And we did all these things where we shot with actual lenses, real water going down pipes. And then we sort of, you know, we sent that to the visual effects houses and had them recreate it. There’s a brief moment where Scott is feeding water to Antony his ant, you know, and it’s a ball of water.

PETER: Yeah.

PEYTON: ‘Cause that’s what that size the surface tension of water is like. And those are the things that fascinated me. Like the physics of that world and the light, how light played.

Leonardo DiCaprio Fights To Survive In First Stunning 'The Revenant' Trailer

by Erin Whitney

"I ain't afraid to die anymore," Leonardo DiCaprio's explorer says in the first trailer for "The Revenant." "I've done it already."

During award season this year, "Birdman" director Alejandro González Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki escaped to remote areas of Calgary for their latest collaboration, "The Revenant." The survival film stars DiCaprio as real-life legendary explorer and fur trapper Hugh Glass after he's attacked by a bear and left for dead. Glass is betrayed by his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy) and attempts to survive through the harsh winter. In the first intense trailer, we see a bloody DiCaprio attacked by a bear and firing his gun while riding a horse, interspersed with stunning wide shots of the actors within the landscape.

"The Revenant," which is set to open this Christmas, is sure to be a strong awards contender, and as Variety wrote, it might revolutionize the film industry. Earlier this year, director and co-writer Iñárritu told Deadline about the film's challenging shoot, which included traveling to faraway locations. The shooting schedule was so grueling that it caused Hardy to "miss out" on joining the cast of "Suicide Squad." Yet the most notable aspect of the film is that Iñárritu and Lubezki shot it with only natural light. "And every single scene is so difficult," Iñárritu told Deadline, "emotionally, technically. I’ve gotten myself in trouble again, but I’m trying my best." Perhaps that trouble will pay off and earn the duo another set of Oscars.

Mr. Robot: "da3m0ns.mp4" Review

by Amy Ratcliffe

Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.

Reality is a nebulous and subjective term. My reality is not your reality, and Elliot's take on the matter is something altogether different. The question of what's actually happening is constantly being asked in Mr. Robot. It's a challenging premise to build a show around, but Mr. Robot is written and performed in such a way that the question is never at the front of your mind. It's processing in the background, sure, but there's so much character development happening that whether what Elliot's showing us is real or not isn't a distraction from the story.

The theme of reality was especially key in the most recent episode, "da3m0ns.mp4." It doesn't take long to realize Elliot is experiencing hallucinations as he goes through withdrawal. The hallucinations do go down a weird but fascinating trip into Elliot's mind, but they also eat up most of the episode. We've been waiting for FSociety to take their next step and just as they take a forward stride, things flip into slow motion. I would have preferred seeing them actually get to Steel Mountain and start enacting Elliot's very clever plan.

Largest Winged Dinosaur Discovered

by Steve Watts

Researchers have found the largest winged dinosaur on record in China.

The Guardian reports that the new species has been named Zhenyuanlong suni, and the fossil is so well-preserved that scientists have been able to reconstruct the placement of its plumage. It measures two full meters in length. Despite its impressive wingspan, though, researchers say it probably wasn't able to fly.

Windows 10 Retail Will Be On USB Flash Drives

by Ryan Smith

The death of the optical drive in the PC space has been a long time coming, and while removable media is unlikely to go away any time soon, with consumers increasingly flocking to Ultrabooks and other form factors that can’t (or don’t) pack optical drives, the days of optical drives being available on virtually every PC have come to an end. In its place, USB has become the de facto format for removable media compatibility, as even the smallest MacBook comes with at least 1 USB port.

As a sign of the times, even Microsoft is not unaffected by this change, and after quite a bit of speculation over whether Microsoft would ship Windows 10 on a USB flash drive, the company has finally confirmed that retail versions of Windows 10 will be available on a USB drive. The company has opened up pre-orders for Windows 10 on Amazon, listing USB versions of both Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro. These OSes are listed at their respective standard prices of $120 and $200, and while Amazon doesn’t list DVD versions, given that Windows 8.1 has the same MSRP, it doesn’t look like Microsoft is charging a premium for the USB version of the OS.

Both OSes are scheduled to ship on August 16th, a bit over two weeks after Windows 10 officially launches. Given the tight window between when the OS is expected to go RTM and when it’s released – officially Microsoft has still not publicly declared RTM – this gap is presumably for boxing and distributing the finished OS.

‘Suicide Squad’ Explained: Who’s Who in That Comic-Con Trailer?

by Angie Han

Suicide Squad characters

One of the buzziest trailers to come out of this year’s Comic-Con was Suicide Squad. As Russ put it, the footage teased “a viciously detailed film, with a real eye for keeping things grim and weird.” It won the interest of fans and non-fans alike. Which is all well and good for Warner Bros. — but if you fall into the latter category, you might’ve found yourself as confused by the trailer as you were intrigued.

While characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are familiar to just about everyone on the known planet, that’s definitely not the case with Suicide Squad. Fortunately, with over a year to go until the film’s release, there’s plenty of room to get your bearings, and with our help you’ll be caught up in no time at all. Hit the jump for our rundown of the Suicide Squad characters.

Suicide Squad - team

In broad terms, the Suicide Squad is a team made up of supervillains who carry out dangerous black-ops missions for the government, in exchange for commuted sentences. Their specific motivations vary, though, and even the “supervillain” part isn’t a hard-and-fast rule. Some of them are more like antiheroes, and at least one of them is typically a superhero in the comics.

But keep that last phrase in mind — “in the comics.” We’ll do our best to get you up to speed on Suicide Squad based on what we know from the books, but at the end of the day we don’t have a very good idea of what details have or haven’t changed in David Ayer‘s cinematic vision. And now that you’ve got that, here we go…

Suicide Squad - Amanda Waller

Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) is the government agent who has rounds up and then oversees the Suicide Squad. Think of her as the gang’s version of Nick Fury — only, if possible, even more ruthless. It takes a ballsy sort of genius to even dream up the idea of employing supervillains, and Amanda Waller is that genius. Despite having no supernatural powers, she’s tough and sharp enough to keep this wicked group in line. Most of the time, anyway.

Suicide Squad - Enchantress

In the comics, Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) begins as June Moone, an artist who stumbles across a magical being in an old, secret chamber. The encounter leaves her with the ability to transform into Enchantress, a powerful sorceress who can heal and teleport, among other things. June struggles to keep her Enchantress side from growing unchecked and tipping over into the dark side, which is presumably why she looks so unhappy in most of the Suicide Squad trailer.

Suicide Squad - Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) is the rare DC favorite who started out on the screen, not the page. She was invented in 1992 for Batman: The Animated Series. But it’s only in Suicide Squad that she’s making her live-action movie debut.

As her backstory usually goes, Harleen Quinzel was an Arkham Asylum psychiatrist who fell in love with one of her subjects, the Joker. In her insane devotion to him she refashions herself as Harley Quinn, his devoted accomplice and girlfriend. She’s exceptionally strong and agile (as demonstrated by her debut scene in the trailer). In some versions she’s also immune to toxins, thanks to the intervention of her BFF Poison Ivy. Alas, Poison Ivy doesn’t appear in Suicide Squad, or at least not that we’ve heard.

4 Things We Learned About Arrow: Season 4 at Comic-Con

by Eric Goldman

We learned a lot about Arrow: Season 4 at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, as the cast and producers came with plenty of new info on big changes in store for the show this fall.

With so much info coming in so fast last weekend, here are four things we learned for Season 4 to get you prepped!

Visually, one thing that will be obviously different in Arrow: Season 4 is the costume Oliver wears. The new outfit was shown at SDCC, and it is very much reminiscent of the New 52 costume from the comics, bare arms included.

‘Fargo’ Season 2 Trailer: Gunshots, Beatings, and a Chocolate Glaze

by Angie Han

Fargo Season 2 trailer

After setting the mood with a series of cryptic teasers, Fargo Season 2 has finally dropped its first real trailer. Patrick Wilson, Ted Danson, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Jean Smart, Jeffrey Donovan, and more show up to tease the new season, which promises the same delightful mix of chilly weather, jarring violence, dry humor, and Minnesota nice that made the first one such a hit.

Watch the Fargo Season 2 trailer after the jump.

FX dropped the Fargo Season 2 trailer on YouTube.

“The whole world… we’re just out of balance,” muses Lou. Fargo Season 2 is expected to deal with the uneasiness of the post-Vietnam War era, including the encroaching economic recession and the rising feminist issues. A pre-White House Ronald Reagan is one of the characters, and he’ll be played by Bruce Campbell.

Although Fargo is an anthology series, with a whole new cast this season, Season 2 connects to Season 1 through the Solverson family. Molly’s dad Lou, who was played by Keith Carradine in Season 1, is played here by Patrick Wilson, and the story concerns his attempts to solve a case involving rival crime organizations.

Here’s the lengthy and detailed Season 2 synopsis:

The all new “true crime” case of Fargo’s new chapter travels back to 1979 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Luverne, Minnesota, where a young State Police Officer “Lou Solverson” (Wilson), recently back from Vietnam, investigates a case involving a local crime gang and a major Mob syndicate. Helping him piece things together is his father-in-law, “Sheriff Hank Larsson” (Danson). The investigation will lead them to a colorful cast of characters that includes “Karl Weathers” (Nick Offerman), the town lawyer of Luverne, Minnesota. A Korean War vet, Karl is a flowery drunk blessed with the gift of gab and the eloquence of a true con artist. Three-time Emmy winner Brad Garrett will play “Joe Bulo,” the front man for the northern expansion of a Kansas City crime syndicate. The new face of corporate crime, Joe’s bringing a Walmart mentality to small town America. His number two is “Mike Milligan” (Bokeem Woodbine). Part enforcer, part detective, Mike is always smiling – but the joke is usually on you. Bulo and his crew have their sights set on the Gerhardt crime family in Fargo, currently led by matriarch “Floyd Gerhardt” (Smart). With her husband at death’s door, Floyd takes over the family business, frustrating her eldest son, “Dodd Gerhardt” (Jeffrey Donovan). An impatient hothead with a cruel streak to match his ambitions, Dodd can’t wait for both his parents to die so he can take over and expand their business from kingdom to empire.“Bear Gerhardt” (Angus Sampson) is the middle son, an intimidatingly large man who, although inarticulate, is the most decent of his clan. “Rye Gerhardt” (Kieran Culkin), the youngest of the Gerhardt clan, views himself as a big shot, but in reality he’s just a small dog who barks big.

Fargo Season 2 premieres in September.
