Marvel’s Netflix series Luke Cage has barely been out a week, but already everyone is talking about it. Now, you can get that music in an amazing vinyl release.

Daniel Craig Says He Wants To Come Back To Bond

by Patrick Dane

spectreThere was a feeling a few momths ago that Daniel Craig was leaving the role of Bond. The feeling from reports, rumours and his interviews was that he really wanted out of the character.

Well, it seems that was all premature. Speaking to at the New Yorker Festival (Vulture), the actor explained his position, and why one infamously frosty interview went down the way it did. Specifically, on saying something about ‘sliting his writsts’ about coming back, He said:

They say that s*** sticks, and that definitely stuck. It was the day after filming [stopped on Spectre]. I’d been away from home for a year.

He goes on to explain he’d like to come back to the character too, saying:

As far as I’m concerned, I’ve got the best job in the world. I’ll keep doing it as long as I still get a kick out of it. If I were to stop doing it, I would miss it terribly.

There has been word recently that the producers of the film still consider the actor for first choice, so barring any changes of hearts, I say we can probably expect Craig back.

‘Iron Fist’ Trailer: There’s a New Marvel Superhero in Town

by Angie Han

Iron Fist

All caught up on Daredevil and Jessica Jones and Luke Cage? Ready for the next building block of Netflix’s Marvel universe? Netflix has just unveiled the first proper trailer for Iron Fist, starring Finn Jones as Danny Rand. 15 years ago, Danny was involved in a plane crash and presumed dead. But when he resurfaces in New York, his friends and enemies discover that not only is he very much alive, he wields the awesome power of the Iron Fist.

Watch the first Iron Fist trailer below.

Iron Fist Trailer

In addition to Jones as Danny, Iron Fist stars David Wenham as Harold Meachum, the former business partner of Danny’s late parents; Jessica Stroup and Tom Pelphrey as Harold’s children Joy and Ward Meachum, who have known Danny since childhood; and Jessica Henwick plays Colleen Wing, an ally of Danny’s who runs a martial arts dojo. Iron Fist will also bring back a few familiar faces from other Netflix Marvel series, namely Carrie-Anne Moss as Jeri Hogarth from Jessica Jones and Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple.

Iron Fist finished shooting just hours ago, as revealed by a happy but tired-looking Finn Jones on Instagram. It is the last of the four Marvel solo superhero series originally ordered by Netflix, following DaredevilJessica Jones, and Luke Cage. The leads of all four shows are expected to team up for The Defenders sometime next year, though it’s looking increasingly possible that The Punisher will slip in somewhere between Iron Fist and The Defenders.

Iron Fist arrives March 17, 2017.

Fifteen years after being presumed dead in a plane crash, Danny Rand (Finn Jones) mysteriously returns to New York City determined to reclaim his birthright and family company. However, when a long-destined enemy rises in New York, this living weapon is forced to choose between his family’s legacy and his duties as the Iron Fist.

Watch Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ‘Hamilton’-Inspired ‘SNL’ Opening Monologue Rap

by Ethan Anderton

Lin-Manual Miranda Saturday Night Live Monologue

Over the weekend we already took a closer look at all the best and worst sketches from the episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by Hamilton star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. We already highlighted the obvious but hilarious parody of Stranger Things, but we figured that starting off Monday morning by calling your attention to Miranda’s incredible Hamilton inspired opening monologue rap.

Lin-Manuel Miranda took the signature track “My Shot” from Hamilton and adapted it so that it was all about making a childhood dream of his come true by hosting Saturday Night Live. It’s fast-paced, well-written and just plain awesome.

Here’s the Lin-Manuel Miranda Saturday Night Live monologue from NBC:

If some of Miranda’s rhymes are just too fast for you to pick up, here’s the lyrics:

So I am not throwing away my shot
I am not throwing away my shot
My name is Lin-Manuel, I am hosting SNL
And I am not throwing away my shot!

I’mma go for broke and do it all tonight
Take a swing, pass the baton, gimme the ball tonight
I got a Tony and an Emmy and a Grammy, yo
But what I really want’s a famous person cameo, damn yo!
I’mma do a bunch of sketches, sometimes I’ll play the lead
Give you what you need, got the cue cards for me to read
Yes, indeed, tonight you’ll see me at my naughtiest and bawdiest
And now I’m gonna walk into the audience

‘Cause I am not throwing away my shot
I am not throwing away my shot
This is my one big chance, so bring on the dancers
‘Cause I’m not throwing away my shot!

It’s time to take a shot!
And yes, I’m right in my element
Who knew that Hamilton would be so topically relevant?
The way these grand-standing candidates be talkin’
They’re just a tweet away from facing off in Weehawken
They keep brawlin’, D and RNC, keep fallin’
I liked it better when it’s Kate McKinnon v. Baldwin
Yeah, and so we thicken the plot, stirrin’ the pot
Tonight I’m finally earning my spot
On this wall, in this hall, and I’m gettin’ a piece of it
Like Miley, Schumer, Tracy Morgan and this piece —

Well, he never gon’ be president now!
(Never gon’ be president now)
Never gon’ be president now!
(Never gon’ be — )

And I am not throwing away my shot
I am not throwing away my shot
Hey yo, election news cycles and time with Lorne Michaels
I am not throwing away my shot!

Yo, but seriously guys, since I was five I decided
To keep my eyes pried open wide waiting for Saturday Night Live
Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, insane, inhuman
The way Don Pardo would say “Laraine Newman”
Dana Carvey, Tina Fey, Vanessa Bayer, David Spade
I prayed and stayed up late hoping one day they’d say I made the grade
Breathe. Savor it, own it
I swear to God, if I’m hostin’, I’m makin’ the most of this moment!

And I am not throwing away my shot
I am not throwing away my shot
And as long I remember to vote this November
I am not throwing away my shot!

And for a frame of reference, here’s the original song from Hamilton:

Don’t forget, a documentary about Hamilton is coming to PBS on October 21st at at 9pm ET.

How All 50 State Capitals Got Their Names

by Miss Cellania

It doesn’t matter so much that the 50 cities on this list are state capitals, because any list of town name origins contains some interesting stories. However, using state capitals gives every American a connection to at least one of them. I never knew the story, but I had assumed, I guess, that the capital of Kentucky has some connection to Frankfurt, Germany. Wrong.

Historians aren’t certain where Frankfort got its name, but most people believe the name memorializes an early settler named Stephen Frank, who was killed by Native Americans near a river crossing. The crossing came to be known as Frank’s Ford, later shortened to Frankfort. Frankfort is located in similarly named Franklin County, named for Benjamin Franklin.

But they get more interesting. Check out Minnesota’s capital.

St. Paul didn’t receive its elegant sounding moniker until 1849. Before that, it was called Pig’s Eye, after a local tavern owner named Pierre “Pig’s Eye” Parrant. Parrant was an unlikely inspiration for a town name: He had a bad reputation and was said to be a coarse, uncouth man whose bad eye lent his face a piggish expression. But according to legend, a customer at Parrant’s tavern gave “Pig’s Eye” as the return address on a letter he was sending, and from then on, the town was known as Pig’s Eye.

St. Paul might have been known as Pig’s Eye forever, if not for the arrival of a Catholic priest named Father Lucien Galtier, who established the chapel of St. Paul in the region in 1840. Nine years later, the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Minnesota, presumably weighing the pros and cons of naming the town after a licentious tavern owner or a Catholic saint, officially named the settlement St. Paul.

See if your state capital has such a colorful past, at mental_floss.

Photoshoppers Give Birds The Human Arms They've Always Wanted

by Zeon Santos

(Image Link)

You know what all birds wish they could wear, even just for one day?

Human arms and hands, because as hard as they try to rock, and as much as they try to kick ass in the animal kingdom, their wings just aren't cutting the mustard.

(Image Link)

Wings can't be formed into devil horns, they can't punch suckas in the face and they can't hold firearms, not effectively anyway, which is why birds are eternally envious of our human ability to flex and fire.

(Image Link)

Photoshoppers love to fulfill wishes with their digital skills, so they started giving birds the human arms and legs they've always wanted, which was probably a huge mistake.

(Image Link)

Good thing their human arms are only on loan, or else birds would take over the planet with a quickness!

Gut Feeling

We are aware of the ongoing struggle between the heart and the brain, but there are other organs that can throw a wrench into our perception of the world around us. Heart and Brain are discussing the morning news when Bowels has a gut feeling. And you know what happens when the gut feeling wins out over brains… that’s how you get killer clowns! Not to mention nasty political campaigns. This is the latest from Nick Seluk at The Awkward Yeti.

Your Westworld Logistical Questions Answered

by Peter Sciretta

Westworld

Westworld premiered this week on HBO, and I very much enjoyed the first episode of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy Nolan‘s expensive and beautiful small screen adaptation. But I was left with many questions, though not many of the plot-specific mysteries that Jacob Hall brings up in his extensive Westworld spoiler review. I’m more interested in his first question: How does this park actually operate?

westworld

I Have a Lot of Westworld Logistical Questions

I was left wondering about the nerdy logistics of how such a “theme park” operates. Does the park shut down when it’s getting refreshed? What happens to the guests during this time? Where is that backstage headquarters located? How big is this western expanse? How is it that the guns work in this park? As a Disneyland fanatic, I tend to find myself sucked into the question of how it all actually works.

When I was on the set of Jurassic World, I kept asking questions about the film’s fictional theme park as if it were a real place. I loved the in-depth answers from the producers as to how the gyrospheres worked because it seemed like every piece of the park had an explanation and was engineered to work on a real level.

Jonathan Nolan, who has written some of his brother Christopher Nolan’s best films, seems to keep things grounded in reality even when dealing with big complex science fiction ideas. The showrunner told us that he tends “to prefer film or TV where I’m allowed as an audience member to do some of the math myself.”

At the same time, I also like stuff that’s layered and dense. We knew we wanted to tell a complicated story, but we also knew from the beginning, when J.J. first approached us for the project, his suggestion had been to consider the perspectives of the hosts. We took that suggestion and ran a country mile with it, up to and including and turning inside out the entire narrative where we could.

Lisa Joy says they have thoroughly mapped out the rules of this park, although we should not expect too much of it to be spelled out in the series:

Though we don’t explicitly address rules that much within the episodes, there is certainly an underlying rule set. The reason you don’t explicitly address them is because we’re trying to root it in the hosts’ point of view and gradually come to understand how the world works with them, to be mystified by it sometimes but then to realize the underlying logic of it becomes clear.

So I’m sure they have answers to everything, some of which we may learn in this upcoming season, others which may never be directly answered on screen. I went in search for the answers through many interviews with the Westworld showrunners and here is what I found.

Westworld guns

How Do the Guns Work?

In Westworld, the park guests can kill the hosts with their guns, but the gunfire from the hosts seem to have very little impact on the guests. This makes sense as you wouldn’t want to have your theme park attractions killing the visitors like in Michael Crichton’s other creation Jurassic Park. But how do the guns work in the reality of the world within the series?

Jonathan Nolan has explained that “It’s not the guns, it’s the bullets.”

We thought a lot about this. In the original film, the guns won’t operate guest on guest, but we felt like the guests would want to have a more visceral experience here. So when they’re shot it has sort of the impact. They’re called simunitions. The U.S. military trains with rounds like the ones we’re talking about. But there’s a bit of an impact, a bit of a sting. So it’s not entirely consequence-free for the guests.

So this explains why we do see a BB-gun type impact on the guests. But the real question is, what’s to stop one of the hosts from taking one of the guest’s guns and using the real ammo?

westworld-hopkins-robot

What Year Is This Anyway?

Jonathan Nolan reveals in a behind-the-scenes video that the series takes place in the 21st century. But how far into the future? We don’t know. Nolan told EW that the setting outside of the Westworld park is “something for the audience to discover” so I’m sure we’ll find out more as the season plays out.

One character in Westworld claims he has been a customer for 30 years (he comes off like one of the many entitled Disneyland Annual Passholders, referred to by some cast members as “Passholes”), but it seems as if the park has existed for longer than that. Nolan has compared the park to Disneyland in the press, saying that he imagines that in the world of their show, “Westworld has become an institution, a place that people can come to, and they bring their kids back to.”

78-year-old Anthony Hopkins plays a character named Dr. Robert Ford, the creative director, chief programmer, and founder of the park. You might think this give us some clues to the park’s age. However, later in the 21st century, they may have discovered the keys to extending life, so his appearance might not be so telling. Remember, Ford says that humanity can now “cure any disease, keep even the weakest of us alive.”

Westworld’s Season 1 Budget Was $100 Million With The Pilot Costing $25 Million

by Patrick Dane
Corey

I liked the first episode. Looking forward to the season.

westworld

I’ve seen the first episode of Westworld, and I have to say, it is really quite excellent. It’s strange, intriguing, and you really should check it out tonight.

It seems HBO would really like you to do that too as they have a lot riding on the show. The Hollywood Reporter are saying that they’ve heard the budget for the entire first season, which contains 10 episodes, was $100 million. They are also saying that the show’s pilot cost $25 million itself. It’s clearly a massive project, and the money does show on screen for sure.

However, programming president Casey Bloys did stress that the networks entire success isn’t riding just on the show though. He said:

The notion that it’s Westworld or nothing, I understand the comparisons to Game of Thrones because they’re both big genre pieces but the fate of the network doesn’t rise or fall on this show. That being said, it would certainly be great if it connected with an audience.

Regardless of an inflated budget, like I said, I was very impressed by the first episode of the series. I can’t wait to dig deeper into this world and see what it actually going on.

Mets Rookies Dress Up In “A League Of Their Own” Uniforms

Reportedly, none of the Mets’ rookies were seen crying over dressing up in their Rockford Peaches and Racine Belles uniforms as featured in the film “A League Of Their Own.”
