That Time Revolution Asked Roger Smith, Kari Voutilainen, Laurent Ferrier, and Philippe Dufour What Watch They'd Recommend For Under $10,000

by HODINKEE
james.cissy

@kenty. $10k is a big number, but I'm always impressed how often Rolex comes up whenever people interview these super elite watch makers (these guys sell watches well north of $100k)

Roger Smith. Kari Voutilainen. Laurent Ferrier. Philippe Dufour.  If there were four individuals that represented the absolute finest in independent, hand-made horology, it is these guys.  Last fall, the four of them got together thanks to the Hour Glass Singapore's "Grandmaster" event.  Here, a group of collectors asked the four masters a range of questions, but perhaps the most interesting was when they were asked what watch they would recommend under $10,000.  Revolution Online was there to record their answers.  Consider that not a single of these four men produce a watch even close to this price point.  Their answers might surprise you, but we'll give a hint: two of them mentioned a brand that starts with an "R" and ends with an "x".

This is what they had to say:

Philippe Dufour:  "I would say that you could buy at this price, maybe a bit less, a very good watch in terms of value and quality. It’s not Swiss — sorry — [but] a German brand called NOMOS. I found that this brand makes a very serious product. I like these watches, and for somebody who wants to start, I think this will be a good [choice]: not too expensive and good value for money."

Kari Voutilainen: "It’s a tricky question. In this case, perhaps I would buy a Parmigiani to support my village. That is perhaps the best solution, because it will bring wealth to the area where I’m living.

Laurent Ferrier: "If I could only buy one, I would go for a Rolex Daytona. If you really want to start a collection, it’s probably going to have to be with something simple, so the best way is to go to an auction and try to find original 50-year-old pieces that are still in good condition. That’s a very easy way to start."

Roger Smith: "I don’t know if this would surprise people, but personally, it would have to be a Rolex. They are exceptional watches and what impresses me about Rolex is that they’re not very adventurous, which is good, because they know they have a great movement. The movements that they use are tried and tested. They’ve been around forever — why change the wheel? They have a watch that you can use for dress, sports, and it’s a great all-rounder. Put one on your wrist and you’ll probably die with that watch on your wrist. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I look at the mechanics of a watch, the case and how all the components are constructed; to me, [the Rolex is] bulletproof, and I don’t think you can get much better than that. They don’t sponsor me, by the way."

Pretty incredible, no?  You can read the full story on Revolution here.  The image above comes from Billionaire.com's story on these incredible four men.

Useful Again: Restored American Pocket Watches Turned Desk Clocks

by Stephen J. Pulvirent
james.cissy

@Kjigs, kinda cool.

American Pocket Watches As Desk Clocks

American Pocket Watches As Desk Clocks

Sometimes it is easy to forget that there was a long tradition of quality watchmaking right here in the USA that persisted until only a few decades ago. The gents over at Analog/Shift have taken this to heart and turned a handful of antique American pocket watches into desk clocks, fitting each fully-restored watch with an individually carved hardwood stand. Sure, you might not want to throw a Waltham railroad watch into your pocket, but it's a handsome option for sitting next to your iMac.

Elgin Watch With Tiger Maple Stand

A few years ago Analog/Shift's James Lamdin heard about a watchmaker in Maine who was cleaning up old, out of use pocket watches and turning them into desk clocks that he was selling in his own shop under the brand "Uselful Again." Now Analog/Shift has partnered with Useful Again to create a small set of clocks that take large, early twentieth century American pocket watches and pairs them with appropriate hardwood stands.

Inside A Hamilton Pocket Watch

Inside A Hamilton Pocket Watch

All the watches used here are size 16 or 18 pocket watches, which means the movements are approximately 43-45mm in diameter – this was the idiosyncratic sizing system for American pocket watches. Opening these Hamitlon, Waltham, and Elgin watches up, you find movements with large plates, ornate decorations, and big balance wheels. Some have higher degrees of finishing than others, but they're all interesting. The dials vary in style as well, with some looking distinctly Art Deco and others appearing more utilitarian and austere. Analog/Shift sources and restores each of these watches themselves before having Useful Again create the stands.

Admiring The Movement In The Stand

Admiring The Movement In The Stand

These hardwood stands are cut individually for each watch to achieve the proper fit and a good pairing between the look of the wood and the look of the watch. Woods include Padauk, Cocobolo, Zebra Wood, and others. There is a good mixture of light and darks woods, as well as all steel and gold fill watches available.

Prices vary based on the watch/wood combination, ranging from $650 to $960, making them a nice gift for any watch lover. You can find them in the Off-Beat section of Analog/Shift.

VIDEO: 10:10 in Watch Advertisements - Numberphile Tells Us What We Already Know, But It's Still Cool

by Benjamin Clymer

The self-declared Numberphile has gone ahead and tackled a subject that is close to home - where watch hands are set in advertisements.  We already knew that it's at 10:10 for a few reasons - it frames the name and logo well as well as makes it look like the watch is smiling, but in this video, you can see just how rampant this practice is. Pretty, pretty, cool.
