2,000 hours later, Skyrim modder lands a job working on Destiny with Bungie

by Ben Gilbert
james.cissy

Time and effort.

@keith, get on it.

Having spent over 2,000 hours working on the enormous -- and enormously impressive -- Skyrim mod "Falskaar," Alexander Velicky was dead set on getting a design job in the game industry. " I set my sights on a professional design job pretty early, I lowered my head, charged forward, and rarely looked back," he said in a recent forum post. Though you might expect his Skyrim chops would land him at Bethesda Softworks, the studio behind the beloved first-person RPG, he's just accepted a job at Bungie Studios working on Destiny.

Velicky spent much of the last four years working on modding, first getting his start in Bethesda Softworks' Fallout 3. When Skyrim launched in 2011, he continued working with Bethesda's modding tools, only this time he created a massive game with "20 - 30 hours" worth of exploration and questing -- he even recorded new voiceover work and a unique soundtrack.

That whole cloth approach to modding assuredly helped land Velicky the new gig at Bungie, and it's not the first time we've seen as much. Armed Assault 3 modder Dean Hall created Day Z, which is now being published as a standalone project. Take that as a lesson, y'all: dreams do come true! At least if you work incredibly hard at them.

Last week we assembled a dedicated group of watch lovers at En Japanese Bistro in New York City's West Village to take a closer look at both Grand Seiko and the Seiko Astron. CEO of Seiko USA, Yosh Kawada welcomed guests and a master watchmaker was on hand to explain the finer points of Seiko's technical prowess. It was a wonderful way to celebrate Japanese watchmaking and the approach that makes it truly unique in the world of horology. Thank you to all our guests and to Seiko for a wonderful evening. We hope you enjoy these photos from the event:

GTA V makes $1 billion in three days, may be fastest selling entertainment product in history

by Sean Buckley
james.cissy

Holy smokes.

Calling Grand Theft Auto V one of 2013's most anticipated video game releases would be a massive understatement, but if you wanted some sort of monetary proof of the claim, Take-Two interactive has it. According to a press release issued today, GTA V has cleared over $1 billion in sales in its first three days on the market; crunch the numbers, and that adds up to more than 16.5 million units sold. Take-Two says that it believes this makes it the fastest selling entertainment property in history -- the last major release to make that claim, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, took 15 days to reach the milestone. It's an impressive accomplishment, but it's potentially only the tip of the iceberg: GTA V is rumored to be ported to PC and next generation consoles, and has a literal product lifetime to hold down its sales record.

Peripheral Vision 004: Reggie Watts on using technology to make art, pterodactyls

by Brian Heater
james.cissy

fuck shit stack

Peripheral Vision 004 Reggie Watts on using technology to make art

You don't have to ask Reggie Watts to make music. He just does. As he fumbles around for cords and components in the drawers and bookshelves of his Brooklyn apartment, everything that falls within eyeshot becomes a song. Spending a few minutes in his presence, you get the feeling that Watts would have been doing this in some form or other, no matter what career path he'd ultimately settled on, making a name for himself as the singing lawyer or beat boxing chef. But the stars aligned for the musician / comedian, aided in no small part by the increasing availability of cheap, affordable technology.

"I grew up in what i like to call 'the perfect technology curve,' " explains Watts. "When I was a kid, I had organic instruments. There wasn't super high tech stuff. All the super high tech stuff would have been way too expensive. The idea of owning a synthesizer in 1980 was insane for a kid. I [eventually owned] Casio keyboard. That was awesome. I got to experiment with that and make it does things in was it wasn't designed to do." The technology now forms the backbone of Watts' improvisational music making, inhibited only by the constraints of his knapsack. "Everything fits in my backpack," he says. "That's my setup, that's my rule. If anything else comes along, it would have to fit in my backpack."

Designed by Brazilian practice Bernardes + Jacobsen Architecture, Casa GR sits on a near 600m2 suburban lot in São Sebastião. The living and kitchen areas open to the lush landscape at times with double height spaces to engage with the family areas above.

Something borrowed, something new

by R.L.G. | BERLIN
james.cissy

Wonder what and how long it would take before all the languages get blended into an international dialect.

WALK through an international city and you will see quite a lot of English. Walk through an expat-dense neighbourhood in Berlin, like the one Johnson has recently moved to, and you’ll see more than the average, such as “Fastfood”, “Women’s wear”, “Coffee to go” on three storefronts spotted the other day. Using English in a city where many visitors and even residents don’t speak German makes sense.

Besides English-as-English, though, German itself has also taken on quite a lot of English words. The on-line, user-written Wiktionary lists some 900 of them (surely under-counting). The definitions begin with abgefuckt (“in a sorry state”) and end in der Zoom (the feature on camera lenses). The liberal salting of English words into German sentences is called “Denglisch” (Deutsch and Englisch), and it tends to annoy traditionalists.

There are several different kinds of Denglisch. One is the English word that has become fully standard in German: das Baby is the normal way to refer to a new human, edging out the older...Continue reading

Stack printer concept ditches the tray, eats columns of paper instead

by Jon Fingas
james.cissy

Awesome.

Stack printer concept ditches the tray, eats columns of paper

Let's face it: even clever 2D printers aren't usually fun to watch. Mugi Yamamoto's Stack concept livens things up a bit, however. Instead of relying on a tray, the printer swallows paper from a column underneath -- like an animal that only eats company reports. The trayless design isn't just for novelty's sake, though. Stack is more portable than its conventional peers, and it's much less of a hassle to reload. Yamamoto has had a working Stack prototype for months, but he now tells Wired that he's looking for companies that could produce a commercial version. We're hoping that someone takes him up on his offer; it could add a little more excitement to our office printing jobs.
