Listen to the 1001 Spikes soundtrack on Bandcamp

by Jordan Devore

Between 1001 Spikes and Shovel Knight, this has been a great month for games that look and sound old but feel modern. If you're in need of a break from the latter's soundtrack, note that the music for 1001 Spikes is also up on Bandcamp for streaming and purchase.

For $2, you're getting 69 tracks by Misoka and RushJet1. If you haven't yet played the game, be warned: "Aban's Theme" is so damn catchy. It'll claw its way into your brain and refuse to leave.

Solar Flare Eruptions Photo from NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory

by Lisa Marcus

This is a composite image from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory that shows a series of significant solar eruptions occurring over a three-day period in January, 2013. The photo has light wavelengths that are colored in red, green and blue to better outline the eruption dynamics. It would make a beautiful painting.

Nathalia Alzate, a solar scientist, posted her version of the solar events on Facebook. Read that post hereVia Colossal.

Overkill? LG Phone Has 2560x1440 Display, Laser Focusing

by timothy
MojoKid (1002251) writes LG is probably getting a little tired of scraping for brand recognition versus big names like Samsung, Apple and Google. However, the company is also taking solace in the fact that their smartphone sales figures are heading for an all-time high in 2014, with an estimated 60 million units projected to be sold this year. LG's third iteration of their popular "G" line of flagship smartphones, simply dubbed the LG G3, is the culmination of all of the innovation the company has developed in previous devices to date, including its signature rear button layout, and a cutting-edge 5.5-inch QHD display that drives a resolution of 2560X1440 with a pixel density of 538 PPI. Not satisified with pixel overload, LG decide to equip their new smartphone with 'frickin' laser beams' to assist its 13MP camera in targeting subjects for auto-focus. The G3 performs well in the benchmarks with a Snapdragon 801 on board and no doubt its camera takes some great shots quickly and easily. However, it's questionable how much of that super high res 2560 display you can make use of on a 5.5-inch device.

Fifteen Fascinating Facts About Sonic The Hedgehog

by Zeon Santos

Sonic earned his nickname by running really, really fast, just like his buddy Tails earned his name by having two tails, and Dr. Robotnik earned a PhD in robotics and a nickname to boot, but how did SEGA settle on a hedgehog as the main character instead of a rabbit, armadillo or a chicken wearing overalls?

And as for Dr. Robotnik, did you know he was initially going to be the star of the game? The original concept design for the character looked like Teddy Roosevelt, which SEGA felt would be a great way to appeal to Americans:

Okay, now I really want to see a Dr. Robotnik in Dreamland game!

Whole Lotta Love on Mountain Dulcimer

by noreply@blogger.com (Miss Cellania)

badass

Sam Edelston plays led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” on a three-string dulcimer. Yeah, it’s electrified -and electrifying! I have one of these instruments, made by my father, but my repertoire is limited to “Wildwood Flower” and a few Christmas carols. I think I may have to pull it out and practice a little. A Mesmerizing Site That Tracks and Displays Real-Time Lightning Strikes

Did you know that a lightning strike emits a broadband pulse of radio waves that can be detected thousands of miles away? It's that phenomenon which allows a website called Blitzortung to show lightning strikes as they happen all around the world, in real-time. If you thought it was hard to tear your eyes away from the World Cup, this is somehow even more entertaining to watch.

We're celebrating Sonic's 23rd birthday the only way we know how

by Brett Makedonski

It's Sonic's 23rd birthday, and we couldn't let his big day go by unnoticed. We wanted to celebrate by paying tribute to the legendary hedgehog. A really hot, steamy, sexy, erotic tribute.

In case that last sentence wasn't indication enough, this post isn't exactly family friendly. So, not safe for work content to follow. You've been warned. Enjoy.
