What if They Had to Market Facebook Back in the 90s?
AlecbuggThis is absurdly spot-on. Incredibly perfect.

Great Job, Internet!: Give in to your Twin Peaks nostalgia with this retro synth soundtrack tribute
AlecbuggBeautiful
Although it was rightly lauded for David Lynch and company’s surreal, haunting visuals, Twin Peaks was just as distinctive and celebrated for its sonic accomplishments. Angelo Badalamenti’s laconic, synth-heavy score was key to contributing to the sense of dreamy surreality that underpinned the show, ranging from the inviting smoothness of the opening theme to more frenetic fever dreams like “Audrey’s Dance.”
Given the show’s planned Showtime revival (and the uptick in popularity it received after younger viewers discovered the cult classic through its availability on streaming services) it seems fitting to feature this tribute to Badalamenti’s work: The Next Peak Vol. 1, a retro synth cover of the soundtrack organized by Lucy Black of Retro Promenade. With tracks that tread the territory from faithful recreations to more experimental remixes, it’s a nice testament to the show’s enduring musical appeal. For the comparison-happy, we ...
Newswire: The Interview is coming to Netflix, if you still want to see it
AlecbuggI hear it's not that good. But i'll still watch!
For those who haven’t yet pirated The Interview, Netflix will exclusively release the film to U.S. and Canadian viewers this Saturday, January 24—just 30 days after it debuted in a limited theatrical release and through VOD platforms like Crackle, YouTube, and Google Play. Since Sony’s heavily publicized flipping and flopping over how to put out a film that centers on the murder of a sitting world leader, the studio has brought in $40 million in digital sales and $6 million in ticket sales.
That technically puts Sony in the green over the The Interview’s reported $44 million production budget, not including the unknown specifics of the Netflix deal. However, considering marketing costs, revenue splits, and, you know, that crippling hacking ordeal, the company may still have a way to go before deeming the controversial Seth Rogen film a “success.”

Wall of Horse, and 20 Other Out-of-Context D&D Spells
AlecbuggThese are pretty hilarious. When's our first D&D quest?
Playing a tabletop RPG is one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences in the world. It is a form of narrative magic that happens when a good GM, a bag of dice, and unlimited imagination come together in a festival of adventure and diet soda. That magic is only heightened by the ABOSLUTE BONKERS things you and your previously normal friends find yourselves doing as you quest. These are the moments immortalized by the Out of Context D&D Quotes tumblr page, where gamers submit some of the most ludicrous things they have ever heard/spoken while playing. Imgurian BritishguyWhatshisname took some of his favorite quotes and meme-ified them with some official artwork and the results are hilarious.

Marvel's Secret Wars will end the current Marvel universe
Alecbugg"they've gotten so amped up and out of control this is really the only solution" Yeah, because if it's one thing the American people hate it's over-the-top superhero spectacles
Marvel Comics is the king of continuity. Its universe of interconnected superhero stories has been running strong and growing in size and complexity for over 50 years. And unlike its main superhero competition at DC Comics, the main Marvel Universe hasn't really experienced a large-scale reboot.*
That all changes this year.

These are the top-25 photos from Flickr in 2014
From the hundreds of millions of photos uploaded on Flick in 2014, these 25 bubbled to the top.
Though beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we’ve compiled this list based on a number of engagement and community factors. The photos were scored by looking at a combination of social and interactive elements, including how often the photo had been faved and viewed, among others.
There were several community members who appeared in the list several times; we picked their top-scoring image. We saw three of the Flickr 20under20 winners represented in the list. And it was perhaps little surprise the the European Space Agency’s Rosetta Philae photo made the cut. We also included four honorable mentions because we loved them so much.
Congratulations to these amazing photographers!

War, the Game is a real-time strategy game that turns its back on the usual notion of building bases and constructing units.
Book Review: Brandon Sanderson’s Firefight trades exterior threats for internal struggles
AlecbuggStop writing so much shit!
Perhaps no other superhero is involved in as many “what if?” scenarios as Superman. Comic writers have posited how the world of DC Comics might be different if the Man Of Steel wasn’t there to unite the Justice League, what might happen if he disappeared or died, and the terror he could sow if he wasn’t fighting for “truth, justice, and the American way.” Some people think Superman’s awesome power and Boy Scout ethics make him boring, but these stories show his importance as a beacon of hope—proof that absolute power doesn’t have to corrupt absolutely.
While Superman is never directly mentioned in Brandon Sanderson’s Reckoners series, the character’s influence looms large. The title villain of the first novel, Steelheart, was a near invulnerable, flying tyrant that commanded a group of lesser superpowered beings. The dystopian future, in which the rise of the ...
Newswire: Nancy Grace wins the drug war by yelling at 2 Chainz
AlecbuggWorst human being alive? Worst human being alive.
Don’t call Nancy Grace a hero. (Seriously, don’t.) Yes, she has the ability to resolve any crisis, whether it be political, cultural, or the disappearance of an attractive white lady, by yelling at it. But she puts on her pantsuit one leg at a time, just like the rest of us. Grace’s latest achievement is ending the debate about marijuana legalization, which she accomplished last night on her HLN show. She did so by showing the rapper 2 Chainz a handful of videos where idiots videotaped themselves giving their preschool-aged children pot, presumably because getting the dog high wasn’t funny anymore.
Grace argued that it was #Pot2Blame? for these and other, similar incidents of child abuse, while 2 Chainz argued that those people would still be “imbeciles” with or without easy access to pot and that any reasonable person already knows that getting toddlers high is ...
Newswire: Netflix is about to stop streaming Luther, Doctor Who, most BBC shows
AlecbuggOh no!!
If anyone has a spare TARDIS laying around, it sure would come in handy right about now as Netflix will reportedly be eliminating almost all of its BBC programming as of January 31.
Due to the expiration of Netflix’s contract with the BBC, the streaming service will no longer carry a number of U.K. imports, including Doctor Who, Luther, Fawlty Towers, Black Adder, the original British version of House Of Cards, Wallander, Coupling, Top Gear, and more. This is potentially a huge blow for the people who depend on the online subscription service to provide them with across-the-pond entertainment. Plus, some of us might be a little late to the game on Black Mirror, and need a bit more time to get through all the episodes. There is no word yet on whether any negotiations are taking place between the two companies.
Newswire: Six seasons and a promo: Community announces return date
AlecbuggCommunity will outlive us all.
As was prophesied by The Cape Joke Heard ’Round The World, Community has reached the sixth-season mark, thanks to Yahoo. And now, thanks to the Television Critics Association winter press tour, we know when that sixth season will premiere: March 17, on the world’s few remaining screens that aren’t exclusively devoted to MeowMeowBeenz. Two episodes of the show will debut on Yahoo Screen that day, with one new episode per week rolling out on the Tuesdays that follow. “Maybe old-school is the best school,” showrunner Dan Harmon told the TV press, in reference to the season’s traditional scheduling. “It is for rap!”
Considering what little was known about the show’s sixth season heading into the TCAs, the panel provided a wealth of information in addition to the premiere date and Harmon’s hip-hop preferences: Further details emerged about characters played by Paget Brewster and Keith David ...
Great Job, Internet!: Without the theme music, MacGyver’s intro is upsetting and odd
Mario Wienerroither has struck again. Having already created music-free music videos for such artists as Nirvana, Mick Jagger and David Bowie, and Queen, Wienerroither has now turned his attention to the much-loved Richard Dean Anderson vehicle MacGyver and created a “musicless intro” to the 1985-1992 action-adventure series. He boldly removed the heroic and indelible Randy Edelman-composed theme song and substituting realistic sound effects, as well as various gasps, grunts, and screams meant to represent the sounds Anderson (or his stuntman) would be making while, say, sliding down a rocky slope on his butt or grabbing the landing skids of a helicopter in midair. In so doing, Wienerroiter has transformed MacGyver from a show about a highly resourceful secret agent with a flair for mechanical improvisation into a show about a mullet-sporting lunatic who repeatedly hurls himself into danger, then reacts squeamishly to said danger. Particularly delightful is Anderson’s girlish ...
