Coming Distractions: Red-band trailer for Russell Crowe’s The Nice Guys not actually very nice

by William Hughes
Alecbugg

WATCH WATCH WATCH WATCH

In a shocking turn of events—given that it’s being written and directed by Lethal Weapon scribe Shane Black, the man who turned the common household toilet into a figure of looming, bomb-concealing terror—it would appear that the title characters in the upcoming comedy noir The Nice Guys may not be all that nice at all. Indeed, Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling seem practically uncouth in this red band trailer, what with all the fisticuffs and uncivilized gunplay they‘re engaging in as they pursue a missing girl in ’70s L.A.

Crowe plays Jackson Healy, a “messenger” whose messages seem to mostly take the form of punches to the face, although he also throws in a broken bone or two in an effort to widen his violence-based vocabulary. Gosling, meanwhile, jitters all over the place as private investigator Holland March, a whiny, nervous wreck who comes off ...

Red Cliff Is The Crazed War Epic John Woo Was Reborn To Make

by Tom Breihan on The Concourse, shared by Rob Harvilla to Deadspin
Alecbugg

Red Cliff!

It’s probably fair to say that John Woo went limping back to Hong Kong. In the ’80s and early ’90s, Woo changed the Hong Kong film industry by making some of the best action movies of all time: Hard Boiled, The Killer, A Better Tomorrow, Bullet in the Head. He then spent a decade in Hollywood, where he had his hits and his misses. He started out with 1993’s Hard Target, which is maybe the most insane Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle, and therefore also maybe the best. He made 1997’s Face/Off , a classic piece of lunacy that still holds up beautifully today, if only because time has made it seem even more absurd. He made Mission: Impossible II, which is probably the least-beloved movie in that franchise, but made a ton of money and is also awesome. (It climaxes with Tom Cruise throwing a somersault legdrop. Fuck you guys. It’s dope.)

Ice Cube and Friends Are Back in 'Barbershop 3' Trailer to Cut Hair and Fight Violence

by Kelly Woo
Alecbugg

WHAT?! PRAYERS ANSWERED

Barbershop 3The boys are back for "Barbershop 3: The Next Cut" — and this time, they're joined by the ladies.

Global Grind debuted the first trailer for the follow-up to the 2002 original "Barbershop" and its 2004 sequel, "Barbershop 2: Back in Business." Calvin (Ice Cube) has joined forces with beauty shop owner Angie (Regina Hall) to save both of their businesses. That introduces a whole new level of banter and jokes in this third movie, and sparks fly between the men and women.
There are new players on the scene, too — Nicki Minaj as a flirtatious hair stylist and Common a barber married to Terri (Eve), and they get involved in a bit of a love triangle. But while there's a lot of light-hearted fun, the movie also ventures into more serious territory as the staff and patrons of the shops band together to fight rising gang violence in Chicago.

"Barbershop 3" opens in theaters April 15, 2016.

Saturday Night Live treats us to some failed celebrity auditions for Star Wars

by Julia Alexander
Alecbugg

These are very good

Matthew McConaughey proved live comedy was another of his abilities as an actor on last night's Saturday Night Live.

Never trained as a comedian, McConaughey decided to forego the opening monologue and instead tell the audience how his infamous "alright, alright, alright" line from Dazed and Confused came to be.

McConaughey said he secured the role by being in the right place at the right time. A producer approached him about being in Richard Linklater's cult movie at a bar and McConaughey agreed to the job.

When the time came for McConaughey to say the line — which was improvised — he was thinking about the four things he'd need to pull the character off: rock music, an essence of cool, some weed and a pretty girl to flirt with....

Newswire: Eternal optimist Vin Diesel promises new Riddick TV show, movie

by William Hughes
Alecbugg

Just...why

Proving that hope always springs eternal in the (massive, brawny) human breast, film star and twelfth-level paladin Vin Diesel has put two more projects in the saga of Pitch Black protagonist Richard B. Riddick into development. Posting on Instagram, Diesel first announced that his production company, One Race Films, has opened a new TV division, with its first project being Merc City, a new series set in the Riddick Universe.

Apparently centered on the bounty hunters and mercenaries who largely exist to get stabbed, smacked, and growled at in the regular Riddick films, it’s not clear if Merc City will feature performances from Diesel itself, or if it’ll rely instead on all the fascinating world-building that peppers the Riddick films. (Audiences just can’t get enough of faceless mooks and whatever the hell the “Necromongers” are.) Meanwhile, franchise writer-director David Twohy is hard at work on the fourth ...

Block & Tackle: Aaron Rodgers for president

by John Teti
Alecbugg

This is a Fantastic article and includes HILARIOUS gifs of Drew Stanton. Scroll down just for them, it's worth it.

Block & Tackle is John Teti’s column about pro football.

The pregame rituals at Sunday’s games recognized the victims of the Paris terror attacks with dignified tributes—moments of silence and displays of the French blue, white, and red. Yet these shows of Francophilia happened to take place amid the league’s annual Salute To Service, which is very much about ensconcing the NFL in red, white, and blue (and selling camouflage-patterned apparel). The coincidence was awkward. Before the Patriots-Giants kickoff, a small military contingent unfurled a French flag at one end of the field while the stadium observed a moment of silence:

Then the Giants’ public-address announcer hailed a phalanx of service members and veterans on the sidelines, who blanketed the entire field with a gigantic U.S. flag, just as Betsy Ross envisioned. Such was the enormity of these stars and stripes that, tellingly, CBS’ camera ...

Coming Distractions: Michael Shannon chases the boy with the lens flare eyes in the Midnight Special trailer

by Rob Dean
Alecbugg

Jaeden! Looks pretty awesome

Michael Shannon puts on his most intense face—that is to say, his regular face—in the trailer for Jeff Nichols’ Midnight Special. Nichols, who directed Shannon in Take Shelter and also made Mud with Matthew McConaughey, crafts this tale of a child who seems to be at the center of a manhunt due to his unnatural abilities, which also make his eyes turn into lens flares like in a J.J. Abrams movie. As we previously reported, the film also stars Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton, and Adam Driver, all either protecting, pursuing, or interviewing Sam Shepard about the boy with the lens flare eyes. Given Nichols’ previous films, and the stellar cast, it’s probably safe to get excited about going along for the ride when Midnight Special comes out in March.

Great Job, Internet!: TBS’ Dinner And A Movie sure did have a way with food-based movie puns

by Joe Blevins
Alecbugg

I honestly miss this show. It was a great gimmick

For 16 years, TBS had a unique and entertaining method of sprucing up its movie presentations: with quippy commentary and lots and lots of punning, movie-specific recipes. From 1995 to 2011, the basic cable channel’s Dinner And A Movie was sort of a Mystery Science Theater 3000 for foodies. Between movie segments, host Paul Gilmartin (of The Mental Illness Happiness Hour podcast), resident chef Claud Mann, and a succession of female co-hosts, including Annabelle Gurwitch, Lisa Kushell, and Janet Varney, would prepare and enjoy a dish that was somehow thematically tied to a particular film. Besides making the network’s 27th airing of Air America more entertaining, it was also an interesting way of adding at least two more senses, taste and smell, to the movie-watching experience. For those who miss the show or who never got around to watching it when it was on, the good news is ...

New Valkyria Chronicles titles heading to PlayStation 4

by Allegra Frank
Alecbugg

!!! (too. many. games)

Valkyria Chronicles is receiving both a new entry in the series and a high-definition remaster for PlayStation 4, Famitsu has revealed.

The HD port will be of the very first Valkyria Chronicles title, originally launched on the PlayStation 3 in 2008. It also became available on Steam just last year.

The new game, Valkyria of the Blue Revolution, will be the franchise's first since the Japan-exlucisve Valkyria Chronicles 3 for PlayStation Portable, released in 2011.

Last month, series publisher Sega filed trademarks in both Japanese and English for Valkyria: Azure Revolution. No further details were disclosed then, other than the fact that the trademark referred to a video game.

An American release for either or both titles has not...

Keyboard Geniuses: Readers recall the short lives and goofy deaths of Dungeons & Dragons heroes

Brutish, Nasty, And Short

This week, our resident Dungeons & Dragons expert, Samantha Nelson, reviewed Sword Coast Legends, the latest official D&D game. It features a campaign creation mode, where digital dungeon masters can craft their own stories and challenges. Now, I’ve still never played Dungeons & Dragons, but I love hearing people tell their tales of tabletop glory and, more so, utter failure. If you’re like me, then the comments under the review were a riot. Facetaco set the stage:

Based on my sole experience playing Dungeons & Dragons, this game should consist of spending 45 minutes creating a character, dying within the first ...

Great Job, Internet!: College Humor uses 30 For 30 to remember when Rocky ended the Cold War

by Rob Dean
Alecbugg

Just perfect

While the world awaits the resurgence of the Creed name in the sport of boxing, it’s always good to take a step back and remember what brought us to now. Especially when it’s a momentous occasion like a simple-minded boxer somehow ending the Cold War with a few, barely logical sentences haphazardly strung together after receiving an incredible beating at the hands of The Siberian Express. College Humor uses ESPN’s 30 For 30 style to examine that time when the hostility between two superpowers was healed and eventually dissipated all thanks to the fight between Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago.

The video expertly mirrors the ESPN series of short films, with experts and archival footage setting the stage for the knockout punch that Balboa delivered to the then 62-year-old regime. It’s a brilliant send-up that covers not just the climactic fight, but also the M*A ...

Snowpiercer director partners with Netflix for new monster movie

by Julia Alexander

Love that headline

Hot off the critical success of his last film, Snowpiercer, director Joon-ho Bong has teamed up with Netflix and Brad Pitt's production company to start work on his upcoming monster movie, Okja.

According to Variety, Pitt's company Plan B and Netflix are investing, backing and co-producing the film that is currently working through its pre-production phase.

Speaking to Variety, Bong gave a little bit more info on the still relatively mysterious feature, which sounds like a cross between Guillermo Del Toro's film, Pan's Labyrinth, and a Studio Ghibli feature.

"The film is about a warm friendship between a country girl and a brute with stories," Bong said. "I want to depict the two characters' bizarre journey and adventure across the...

Cancel The LAN Party

It’s November, which means new games are coming faster than you can say “eh, I’ll wait for Fallout 4,” but we’ve still got plenty to talk about before then. Like Halo 5, for example. In his review of Master Chief’s latest tour of the galaxy’s hottest spots for killing aliens, Drew Toal mentioned that while the single-player campaign is a bit “disappointing,” multiplayer still holds up. Down in the comments, though, a lot of readers bemoaned the game’s lack of split-screen multiplayer—a first for the series. LoveWaffle remembers the good old days:

Coming Distractions: A tough year can’t keep The Comeback Kid John Mulaney down

by Alex McCown
Alecbugg

New netflix! We gotta check this out with some whiskey Ryan

On paper, it hasn’t looked like the best year for comedian John Mulaney. His Fox sitcom was canceled after a brief stint of bad reviews and dwindling ratings, which would probably be enough to send anyone into a bit of a funk. But recent interviews show the comic’s spirit is undimmed, and now his new Netflix special, John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid, has arrived so you can mix up your nightly routine of whiskey and re-watching of New In Town. (You can keep drinking the whiskey, obviously, but it’s great to have new Mulaney material.)

Going from a special called New In Town to one titled The Comeback Kid may leave you wondering what the hell happened in between those two tapings. Happily, here’s a short clip of the new special, to give you a sense of what you’ll be in for. It’s a ...
