You're not going to find it in the next car you drive off the lot, but a Ford engineer has developed a fairly novel approach to making a manual transmission a bit easier to adjust to: a vibrating shifter knob. As he explains in the video after the break, Zach Nelson first turned to an Xbox 360 controller for the necessary vibrating mechanism, which he then stuffed into a 3D-printed knob along with an Arduino controller and an LED display.
When fully assembled, the knob is able to communicate with the vehicle's on-board diagnostic system using Ford's open source OpenXC software platform, and vibrate to let you know when you need to shift gears. As Wired notes, the knob can even be used by more experienced drivers to pinpoint exactly when to shift to get either the most performance or the best fuel economy. We also expect a booming business in custom shifter designs to start any minute now.

I make no secrets of my love for Thai food. I always suggest it if I'm in charge of picking the restaurant for the evening—even if I'm in a city where I have NO idea where good thai food might be. Dear Yelp...
I have a few favorites, including pad Thai (duh), pad see ew (also sometimes spelled phat si io), red curry, yellow curry and sometimes fried rice if something sounds good (like pineapple fried rice in the summer!). I am by NO means an expert on Thai cuisine. I just know I like it. So I've been trying to learn to make a few of my favorite dishes at home.I have a favorite (easy) pad thai recipe. So I decided to try my hand at pad see ew. Typically pad see ew is made with broad rice noodles called kuaitiao sen yai. I had a hard time finding them (if anyone in Springfield, MO as any suggestions please let me know!) so I used flat noodles instead. They are similar to fettuccine noodles, so feel free to substitute if you can't find the correct noodles in your area too. No biggie.
I checked out a few recipes online (here, here and here). And adapted based on my own personal tastes and what ingredients I could easily find. So this really isn't traditional... but it's pretty tasty.Easy Pad See Ew, serves two.
6 oz. uncooked noodles
2 broccoli crowns, cut into bite size pieces
3-4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon sesame oil
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons oyster sauce
1 teaspoon packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons rice vinegar
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
Begin cooking the noodles. Follow the directions, they may vary slightly depending on what kind of noodle you are using.
While those continue to cook heat the sesame oil in a large pan or wok. Cook the garlic and broccoli until softened. I added a couple spoonfuls of the pasta water to my pan to help the broccoli cook a little more. The broccoli should turn bright green. In a small bowl whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar and red pepper flakes if using. Once the noodles are done cooking drain them and add them to the broccoli and garlic. Pour the sauce over everything and cook over medium heat until most of the moisture has absorbed into the food.Top with sesame seeds and cilantro. Easy, right? Make this for dinner this week, you're gonna love it. xo. Emma
The live-action trailers for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified just keep on coming. This time instead of creepy clown shows, we've got Dominic Monaghan of LOST and The Lord of the Rings fame, as Agent Enis Cole, chasing an unseen foe around a field at twilight. He's got the upper hand -- or does he? I like how these trailers have had this understated menacing vibe, usually coming from foes unseen or obscured.
When we last saw Agent Cole he was faced with the decision of hitting the booze or maybe taking more drastic action with his service revolver. Submitted for a community vote, the booze won with 51% of the votes. After tragic events, it's unclear whether he'll continue with the Bureau but it looks like his tale won't have a happy end.
[Thanks, Harrison]
