When it comes to fancy studio portraits of pets, it’s no surprise people are willing to hire photographers for loving photos of their cats and dogs, we’ve even seen cameras thoughtfully trained on chickens and exotic snakes, but commercial photographer Kevin Horan decided it was high time for an artistically neglected group of barnyard animals to step into the spotlight: goats and sheep. In 2007, Horan moved from Chicago to Whidbey Island, Washington where he approached a neighbor about photographing one of his sheep. The neighbor agreed and his portrait series Chattel was born.

Lately, Horan photographs mostly sheep and goats from the New Moon Farm Goat Rescue in Arlington, WA, where he sets up a portable studio and works with assitants to achieve surprisingly emotive and humorous portraits that reveal the subtle personality of each animal. The wildly popular series was selected in Photolucida’s Critical Mass Top 50 for 2014, and one of the photos was acquired by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Prints are available upon request. Four fall outfits

by Joanna Goddard
Mikkele.bringard

after the last "4 fall outfits" post i immediately went out and bought those putty colored suede booties. now both women have been wearing them! this lady in both colors... i looked up that first dress she's wearing, but of course it's $230

My friend Courtney lives in rainy London and has four kids, yet somehow always manages to look put-together. I’ve always been curious about how exactly she does it, so I was psyched when she agreed to share her four fall uniforms...Read More >

Aubrey Plaza's Interview About Grumpy Cat Redeems Grumpy Cat.

Aubrey Plaza went on Jimmy Kimmel to talk about her upcoming Grumpy Cat movie for Lifetime, and the result is an incredible display of high wire deadpan in which Plaza masterfully promotes her movie even as she skewers its very concept, likely leaving Lifetime execs' heads spinning as to what just happened. "It's not just for kids and cat lovers," Plaza explains, showcasing one of the world's great poker faces. "It's a gift to America. I think people are going to be blown away by it and I'm not kidding." Alright, Aubrey Plaza. We're sold ...

Baskin-Robbins Will Celebrate Veterans' Day With Camo-Ice Cream

Baskin-Robbins, never strangers to new and interesting flavors, are celebrating Veterans' Day in the best way they could think up: camouflaged ice cream. They're calling the flavor First Class Camouflage (Sure. It's not like you could come up with anything better) and it doesn't sound half bad. The brown color is chocolate. The tan color is salty caramel. And the green color is vanilla cake. Not sure where Baskin-Robbins found green vanilla, but let's not quibble. The flavor will be available throughout November and ten cents of every purchase will actually go to the USO, so they're putting their money where your mouth is. Enjoy ...

Mars Hill Church Will Close Its Doors for Good

Very big, very unexpected news out of Mars Hill today. Following the sudden, surprise resignation of famously controversial pastor Mark Driscoll, the massive, multisite church he founded will dissolve over the next two months. Each of the 13 churches that comprised Mars Hills' empire will either go their own way, merge with another church or close their doors for good. As Mars Hills teaching pastor Dave Bruskas wrote in a letter to the church today:

"Rather than remaining a centralized multi-site church with video-led teaching distributed to multiple locations, the best future for each of our existing local churches is for them to become autonomous self-governed entities. This means that each of our locations has an opportunity to become a new church, rooted in the best of what Mars Hill has been in the past, and independently led and run by its own local elder teams."

In the meantime, Mars Hill will sell all their existing church properties or allow them to be assumed by the new, independent churches. Mars Hill will also fire all their existing staff and then dissolve entirely. "Ultimately, the success of this plan, and the future viability of each of these new local churches rest solely on all of us continuing to be faithful in supporting Jesus’ mission through our attendance and continued giving," wrote Bruskas ...

The Perfect Crime: Texting Your Probation Officer for Weed

Alvin Cross Jr. was out of jail and looking for a marijuana hook up, but for some reason, his friends and family wanted nothing to do with him. One can safely assume that's because Cross' Albany, Georgia community was looking out for him, not wanting him to get into any trouble with the law. But Cross handled getting into trouble just fine on his own. Out of options, he decided to text his probation officer to see if he had any weed to sell. Desperate times call for desperate(ly stupid) measures, and his probation officer had police raid Cross' apartment, where they found cocaine, so he's headed back to prison. Moral of the story is, well, you can figure out the moral just fine here on your own ...

This Is What a ‘Parks and Rec’ Themed Wedding Looks Like

There was waffle wedding cake. A friendly pit bull. Place-settings adorned with the silhouette of Lil Sebastian (RIP). A cool jazz club. A menu that contained Chicky Chicky Parm-Parm, steak and a big ol’ cookie. This Parks and Rec themed wedding had everything a Pawnee resident would expect at such a magical ceremony (warning, the post from Buzzfeed contains some explicit language). The “wedding” was the work of a photography duo from Michigan who collaborates with local caterers and vendors to stage a wedding for the purpose of showcasing their work. Each year, they choose a new theme for the faux-ceremony, and this time, they made the obvious choice: The union of Leslie and Ben. Almost everything used in the fake wedding was a nod to their favorite show—including the wardrobe choices, distinguished guest (including FBI agent Burt Macklin and the mysterious Janet Snakehole) and show references on all of the invitations. Sure, no one was actually married at the Parks and Rec wedding, but we can only hope that the photo shoot will serve as inspiration for a real couple to make this dream a reality ...

Does Your Taste In Music Reveal How Dumb You Are?

Mikkele.bringard

all my favorite bands are on the correct side of the spectrum, so that's good

Virgil Griffith is a CalTech student who set out to find the correlation between average SAT/ACT scores and favorite bands, because life is short and we've all got to fill our days the best way we know how. Using Facebook, CollegeBoard stats and his own know-how, he put together this chart, broadly correlating bands' fan bases with their intellect. Of course, as he notes on his site, correlation does not equal causation, so the chart might not mean anything at all, but it's interesting. As you might expect, Beethoven fans are the smartest, followed by Sufjan fans. Meanwhile, Lil Wayne fans are solidly in last place. Among Christian bands, Jars of Clay fans rank smartest and as for last place, well, don't take it personally, Casting Crowns fans ...

Amy Poehler's Next Project: A Church-Themed Comedy

As Parks & Rec gets ready to bow out of its delightful run, its stars are gearing up for other projects. Long careers seem assured for the likes of Chris Pratt, Aziz Ansari Aubrey Plaza, Rashida Jones, Nick Offerman and Adam Scott, but what of beloved team leader Amy Poehler? Well, it turns out she'll be re-teaming with Parks & Rec executive producer and staff writer Aisha Muharrar to write a new single-cam comedy for NBC, and the premise is one that might interest you. It will center around a young, agnostic woman who inherits a church building and a bevy of wild and wacky congregants. It's being described as "a work-place comedy" so it will probably be tonally similar to Parks & Rec, but word is, Poehler will be writing, not starring in the series. So you might want to get working on that audition tape, dear reader ...

Another Charming Visit From Marcel the Shell With Shoes On.

Last time Jenny Slate and her husband, Dean Fleischer-Camp, released one of their irresistible "Marcel the Shell with Shoes On" videos, Slate was mostly known for her one season on SNL. These days, her future is looking bright, with her lead turn in Obvious Child grabbing all sorts of critical acclaim, as well as her note-perfect portrayal as Jean Ralphio's sister, Mona Lisa, on Parks & Rec. But she hasn't forgotten her best character, a tiny, sneakered shell named Marcel. Extreme Winds Cause a Waterfall in England to Blow Upward wind weather waterfalls England

Hikers exploring England’s Derbyshire Peak District earlier this week stumbled onto a rare phenomenon caused by extreme winds. The River Downfall, a 30-meter (98 foot) waterfall was blown back almost vertically by a powerful updraft, making it seem as if the waterfall was simply flowing into nothing. Very cool. "What’s your greatest struggle right now?""I’m...

Mikkele.bringard

i just kept thinking about will while i read this

"What’s your greatest struggle right now?"
"I’m trying to work with a broken elbow. I do wrestling on the weekends, and during my last match I got thrown out of the ring by The Latin Lover— who’s actually my best friend. But he’s 6’2" and 290 lbs. I’m just a buck twenty five. He lifted me over his head and threw me clear over the ropes and I didn’t land very well. But even with a broken elbow, I got back into the ring and executed my finish move— I held onto his head and did a back flip off the ropes. But at the last moment he caught me and put me into a tombstone piledriver. But I got him back when the match was over, because I pretended to shake his hand, and my partner jumped him from behind. I do that kind of tricky stuff. Because I’m a bad guy."
"What’s your wrestling name?"
"The Superstar of All Superstars."

The iOS Predictive Text Pop Song Is the First True Jam of the Fall

Mikkele.bringard

so funny

Where other people saw predictive text as a new iOS feature that got what you were about to say right oh, maybe, half the time, Musician Jonathan Mann saw an opportunity. Here is his pop song comprised entirely of lyrical nonsense put together by Apple's predictive text, and it's the first true jam of the fall. "The only one who has been the most important thing is the only thing that could have a great way to the best of the best part is that it would mean the absolute world to me and my life" indeed ...

An articles club

by Joanna Goddard
Mikkele.bringard

i really like this idea, but i don't know who i'd do it with

Three years ago, I posted about a random idea I had for an articles club. "An articles club would be just like a book club," I wrote, "But we'll read articles. We'd all read the same story—from, say, The New Yorker or Elle—and chat over wine and snacks. It would be fascinating, timely and a much easier commitment than a book club (because, honestly, who ever finishes the book on time?). And it would make the winter feel fun." Well, my friend Anna and I started one, and here's what it's like...
The evening starts at 7:30pm, so Toby can stay up a few minutes late and say hi to the ladies. He gets to eat some guacamole and chips and tell a few jokes before padding off to bed.
He always tries to sneak in a few extra minutes:)
Then the evening begins! We discuss the article and share anecdotes and philosophies. We also drink wine and eat snacks, of course.
We usually choose an article that feels relevant to our lives—typically about friendship, career, work/life balance or relationships.
The fascinating thing about an articles club is how close you get to—and how much you learn about—the women in the group. The conversations get intimate pretty quickly—we've talked about marriage, breakups, parenting, career goals, what success means, the saddest and happiest times in our lives, depression, body image, aging, feminism, religion, everything under the sun. I've learned things about my friends that I hadn't known after years and years of friendship, since we end up talking about such specific, deep topics. It's wonderful.
Here are some of the articles we've chosen:
Those Aren't Fighting Words, Dear
The "Busy" Trap
Why Is It Hard to Make Friends Over 30?
Surprised to See Me: The biggest shock of losing weight is the (sometimes weird) reaction by my old friends
Why We Cheat
Is There Life After Work?
Why It's Smart to Court Your Friends
How to Be Polite
Masters of Love

Would you ever set up an articles club? They're so much fun and the best part is you can read the article on the way to the club! I always leave buzzing from the female friendships. :)

Some Genius Baked Ben & Jerry’s Cookie Dough Ice Cream to See What Would Happen

As any connoisseur of grocery store ice cream knows, the chunks of raw cookie dough found in pints of Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough are some of the best on the market. There is simply no arguing with this fact. A food blogger for Thrillist decided to find out how good the cookies themselves would be if he fished out the small pieces that had been marinated in the frozen goodness and actually baked them. The courageous snack scientist made it his mission to find out, “Are they actually, you know, cookie dough? Or are they some sort of weird, cookie dough-flavored concoction?” It turns out, they make for a pretty good batch of cookies. But that was simply a practice run to his main experiment: Baking an entire container of cookie dough ice cream on a cookie sheet. The results: “Pudding. Hot, delicious pudding … I ate the whole thing.” Just when we think there are no new frontiers left to explore, brave bloggers like Andy Kryza go prove us wrong ...

Artist Chris Wood works with colored glass to create colorful, prism-like mazes and mandalas of light installed vertically on walls. Her most common material is dichroic (meaning ‘two color’) glass, a material invented by NASA in the 1950s that has a special optical coating meant to reflect certain wavelengths of light while letting others through. At some angles the glass appears completely reflective, somewhat like a mirror of gold. Wood has constructed a number of different glass, mirror, and other light installations which have been carefully documented on her website. (via My Modern Met)

Wonderful Grandparents Accidentally Tagging 'Grandmaster Flash' On Facebook

Oh, Internet. You've been around for a few decades now, but you can still delight. Today, that source of delight comes from a brilliant Tumblr called "Love, Grampa and Grandmaster Flash." Some genius noticed that an absurd number of grandparents—in attempting to sign their Facebook posts "Grandpa" or "Grandma"—accidentally let Facebook autofill the tag and ended up with seminal hip-hop emcee Grandmaster Flash. It's a small, silly mistake, but it is (a) incredible how often it happens and (b) a riot to see notes that read, for example: "Hi sweetie ...just sending you a hug ...love, Grandmaster Flash" ...
