A New Normal

by nickbenwah
Mikkele.bringard

i don't know why, but i really liked this

We recently had another baby.

Recently? She’s three and a half months old. I’m not sure that’s recent, exactly.

I’ve been reeling ever since. I knew that it would be an adjustment, that my life would have to expand to include another life, but I feel as though I’ve been thrust back to the very beginning of parenthood. I keep telling myself, We’ve done this twice before. We should have this down by now.

We do not. I do not.

Having the first child was like being schooled in my own selfishness. You know that feeling of reading a really good book, and then someone walks into the room, oblivious to the fact that you’re reading (a really good book) and asks you a question? You try a short answer and get back to the paragraph you were reading. But there’s the inevitable follow-up question. Then back to the book. Another question, usually something along the lines of Are you even listening to me? And now you’re not even sure where you are on the page, so with a passive-aggressive sigh you mark your page and reluctantly engage in the conversation.

Having the first kid was like that. Moment by moment I was confronted with the decision: Will I tend to the needs of this little defenseless boy, to the needs of my tireless wife, to the needs of having us all fed and mostly clothed and presentable in public, or will I continue doing the things I’ve always done? More often than not, I think, I made the right choice, but I was conscious of the decision every time. Some days I just craved the chance to do whatever it was I wanted to do, to get back to my book, so to speak. Denying myself and choosing generosity—of time, attention, rest, agenda—never came naturally because the things that come naturally are usually quite a bit less holy than what I’ve been called to be.

Then, after a few months or years or something, I began to get back a little of what I wanted, a little bit of the rhythms and rituals I was used to. I was able to sneak in a chapter here and there before I had to press the bookmark between the pages again.

Then along came baby number two.

Chaos. Although this time, in less time than the first time, I felt like I was able to recover. Life was different, but I found an equilibrium a little faster.

Now though, since the arrival of baby number three, it’s as if the book has been placed on some high unreachable shelf in the corner of some room I haven’t set foot in for three and a half months. When people ask us how we’re doing our answer is often, Oh, we’re just trying to find our new normal. But what sort of makes my eyes go wide is the very real possibility that we’ve already found it. Our new normal (at least for now) is that there just isn’t a lot of (read: any) me time because loving these kids is full time. And I’m trying to embrace it, learn from it, and revel in it because my kids are making me a better me, and together we’re a better us.

So the book will sit awhile longer, and that’s okay because I’ve been told that once I finally come back to it in a few years I’ll probably find myself disappointed that the story written there is a lot less fierce, and funny, and frightening, and full of wonder than the one I’ve had the chance to live.

Banksy Created a Parody Theme Park Called ‘Dismaland'

by darganthompson
Mikkele.bringard

i follow this is colossal on instagram and he was live posting from this place

Anonymous British street artist Banksy has revealed his latest display in the form of a “bemusement park.” The park features a run-down Cinderella’s castle, a police tank outfitted with a slide, a handful of very miserable-looking workers along with unique takes on traditional attractions such as “crazy gulf,” an “oil caliphate-themed golf course.” In usual Banksy fashion, the park was constructed in secret. The residents of the English town where it sits were told a film was being shot at the construction site. It’s set to open to the public tomorrow, and tickets are already in high demand, though potential attendees are finding the website rather hard to figure out (which some figure may just be another intentionally dismal part of the whole experience).

Apparently if you’re a thirsty butterfly, one option available to you is a refreshing sip of turtle tears. No, this isn’t a staged photo masquerading as science, it’s an unusual behavior known as lachryphagy (tear drinking), and is one of several ways butterflies obtain moisture and nutrients. Captured here by Ama la Vida TV, this photo shows two Dryas iulia drinking tears from the eyes of a few turtles. The photo won the 2014 Wikimedia Picture of the Year. The Wave Cabinet Opens Like a Paper Fan

by Christopher Jobson

wave-1

As part of a long series of functional sculptures by New York artist Sebastian ErraZuriz, the Wave Cabinet merges the form of a credenza with an elaborate system of 100 wooden slats that allows the piece to open in rolling, wave-like patterns. Like many of his other novel designs, ErraZuriz says his intention is to elicit curiosity and cause viewers to do a double-take when looking at a recognizable object that suddenly behaves in new ways. “I am inviting people to look at one of the simplest forms of furniture design and to forget that we’re talking about furniture, instead to see it as a way of breaking a box.” Watch the video below to see it in action, and also see his equally fun Explosion Cabinet. Billy Graham’s Grandson Tullian Tchividjian Admits to Affair, Resigns as Pastor

by Anonymous
Mikkele.bringard

is it bad that the thing that was the weirdest to me about this whole situation is how this guy got such a crazy name with people like "billy" and "franklin" graham as his direct predecessors?

Tullian Tchividjian, the grandson of famed evangelist Billy Graham and author of several books, has stepped down as the senior pastor of the 2,000-member Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, confessing to having an affair. Tchividjian had served as the church’s senior pastor since 2009. In a statement to The Washington Post, Tchividjian said he recently discovered that his wife was having an ongoing affair, which eventually led them to separate. He wrote, “Sadly and embarrassingly, I subsequently sought comfort in a friend and developed an inappropriate relationship myself. Last week, I was approached by our church leaders and they asked me about my own affair. I admitted to it and it was decided that the best course of action would be for me to resign.”

Tchividjian said “my wife and I are heartbroken over our actions,” and asked for prayer. The church's executive pastor, Rob Pacienza, told the paper they will be “working with and assisting Pastor Tullian and his family to help them through this difficult time” ...

Deep-Fried Starbucks Is Being Sold at the San Diego County Fair

by Anonymous

Like everyone, you probably wish you could just deep-fry your Frappucino and eat it like a doughnut, right? Well, some fry wizards at the San Diego County Fair figured out how to make your favorite Starbucks beverages into sugary, carb-loaded snacks. The proprietors of Bacon-A-Fair stuffed fried balls of dough with coffee grounds, doused them with sugar, jammed them into a coffee cup and sprayed them down with whipped cream. Obviously, it’s totally worth the fair admission price—and a trip to California ...

Matty Smith’s Photographs Display Vibrant Life Lurking Just Below Sea Level

by Kate Sierzputowski

“Physalia Physalis” – Bushrangers Bay, NSW Australia

Appropriately titled Over/Under, Matty Smith's series showcases the dual environments that exist just above and below sea level. Smith focuses on images right at dusk in order to expose the vibrant colors that shine within the dark waters. Each shot is divided by a wavy strip of ocean just above the center of the photograph. Fish and coral live below the horizon as seagulls and sunsets populate the upper half of the photos.

Tricky photographs to shoot from a technical standpoint, Smith uses a strobe light for the bottom half of the image to ensure that both the animals above and below water are highlighted prominently.

The Australian photographer views each half and half image he captures as a landscape photograph, and prefers environments with depth and attitude over blue sunny skies. Typically Smith scouts his locations via snorkeling expeditions. “For me one of the most wondrous parts of any dive is the moment that the water engulfs my mask as my head slips below the surface,” says Smith. “I think it’s the suspense of the unknown of what lies beneath, the transitional part of moving from one element to the next that feels so magical and the thought of what alien creatures I might encounter.” Many of his photos are available as prints. (via My Modern Met)

Wheaton Distances Itself from Alumni Dennis Hastert Amidst Scandal

by Anonymous

Wheaton College, the large Christian university where Dennis Hastert was once a student, has begun to distance themselves from the former Speaker of the House after his indictment last week. Hastert allegedly lied about making large payments to a male victim to keep quiet about sexual abuse he suffered when the 73-year-old was a teacher and wrestling coach more than 30 years ago. According to NBC, Wheaton has now renamed “The J. Dennis Hastert Center for Economics, Government, and Public Policy,” and Hastert has resigned from the school’s board of advisers. In a statement, school officials said they "pray for all involved, including Speaker Hastert, his family, and those who may have been harmed by any inappropriate behavior" ...

Artist Sean Yoro Paints Meticulous Seaside Murals While Balancing on His Paddle Board

by Kate Sierzputowski

pretty impressive

Hula_01 Hula_02 Hula_03 Hula_04 Hula_05 Hula_06 Hula_07

Riding atop a paddle board, artist Sean Yoro (aka Hula), paints murals while floating on the waves, placing his works just above sea level. The murals, all portraits of women, have a hyperrealistic quality that appear as if each is existing just above the tide. Due to the works’ position above the water they reflect perfectly into the waves, the image extending out far from the painted surface.

The NYC-based artist paddles out to paint the murals, balancing his acrylic paint on his board all the while. Hula grew up on the island of Oahu, where he spent most of his days in the ocean. Although he grew up dabbling in graffiti, watercolor, and tattoo art, he didn’t take his work seriously until he began to paint the the human body when he was 21. Hula also uses cracked surfboards as a surface to paint his female portraits, more of which you can see on his Instagram, @the_hula. (via Street Art News)

Wet Fold Origami Technique Gives Wavy Personality to Paper Animals by Artist Hoang Tien Quyet

by Kate Sierzputowski

17065266329_4ac351328b_o

Often one associates origami with sharp and precise folds, miniature works that have a crisp perfection. Origami artist Hoang Tien Quyet shies away from this rigidity, instead folding his small objects with a technique called “wet-folding,” which allows curves to be created instead of the typical straight lines. With this technique Vietnam-based Quyet creates posed animals bounding with personality, their heads tilted and wings ready for flight.

The technique of wet folding was created by the late origami master Akira Yoshizawa, and involves dampening the paper so it easily accepts folds. Wet-folding gives the paper works a more realistic appearance, adds a rounded quality to the origami, and allows it to appear malleable even though the pieces dry into hardened forms. Wet-folding also involves using a thicker paper, as traditional origami paper would easily tear if wet.

Quyet is co-author of two books, “50 hours Origami +” and “VOG2 – origami.vn,” both published by Passion Origami. Quyet’s skill and has lead to him being invited to several international origami conventions, including Germany, France, Italy, and Japan. You can see more images of Quyet’s animals on his Flickr.
