FINISH HIM…Right After This Song

by Remy Carreiro

fXRKjSo

This might be one of my favorite cosplay photos ever. This Redditor posted this pic today, and I feel like it doesn’t even need to be made into a meme. It is perfect as is. I wonder if they would sing “Finish Him” in perfect harmony before tearing out his spine?

One can only hope….

Insanely Awesome ‘Majora’s Mask’ Cosplay

by Remy Carreiro

majora

Found this on Imgur and was blown away. If anyone can find out who this is or get us more pics, we would be appreciative. Would love to give this guy/gal some credit! The hovering moon balloon is what takes this from great cosplay to pure perfection.

Also reminds you how oddly scary that game was.

Quadruple Lightning Strike Causes Google Data Loss

Google has confirmed that four lightning strikes led to a tiny amount of permanent data loss in its online cloud processing service. It appears to be an extremely unlikely freak incident, though Google says it will continue to work to reduce such risks.

The incident took place near a data center in Belgium where Google carries out some of its work for Compute Engine, which offers virtual machines for processing on a scalable, pay-per-minute basis.

The four lightning strikes didn’t hit the center itself but rather hit a local electricity grid. That led to a “brief loss of power” at the data center, rather than any hardware being fried.

For the most part battery-powered backups did their job. Around five percent of the disks had some sort of failure as a result of the outage, though Google engineers were able to recover data in virtually every case.

The only irreversible problems appear to have come in the very few cases where the power outage caused an error right as the system was carrying out a “snapshot” backup.

Google says this led to a few recent writes being unrecoverable, meaning a permanent data loss equivalent to less than 0.000001% of the total disk space. The BBC believes all affected customers were able to restore the data from their own backups outside of Google.

In one sense it’s a reminder that even with the best organization and protection, data you have stored at somebody else’s facility is vulnerable (though the same is true on your own machines.) But it’s also a good illustration that with a sturdy enough set-up, even an unpredictable shock doesn’t cause that much permanent damage.

Windows 10 won’t run games with SecuROM DRM, says Microsoft

by Mark Walton

While Windows 10 is largely good news for gamers, it turns out that those with a collection of older games laden with DRM copy protection software are going to have a hard time getting them up and running on the new OS. In an interview with Rocket Beans TV (as translated by Rock, Paper, Shotgun) at this year's Gamescom, Microsoft's Boris Schneider-Johne explained that that Windows 10 won't be able to run games that use SafeDisc and SecuROM technology.

"Everything that ran in Windows 7 should also run in Windows 10," said Johne, "There are just two silly exceptions: antivirus software, and stuff that’s deeply embedded into the system needs updating—but the developers are on it already—and then there are old games on CD-ROM that have DRM. This DRM stuff is also deeply embedded in your system, and that’s where Windows 10 says, 'Sorry, we cannot allow that, because that would be a possible loophole for computer viruses.' That’s why there are a couple of games from 2003-2008 with SecuROM, etc. that simply don’t run without a no-CD patch or some such."

This isn’t a bad thing for most people, though. While SafeDisc has hit the headlines before thanks to security issues in Windows—introducing access vulnerabilities into the OS, for example—it's SecuROM that is the most famous, and the most hated of all DRM software. Developed by Sony DADC, SecuROM took a heavy-handed approach to DRM, limiting the number of installs and activations end-users had access to, as well as requiring users to check in online to keep the game running. SecuROM even counted certain hardware changes as a change of computer, forcing another activation.

Google’s new OnHub is a $200 Wi-Fi router and smart home hub

by Ron Amadeo

This is OnHub. It's a cylinder.

4 more images in gallery

Google today revealed a new smart home hub in the form of the OnHub, a $200 cylindrical router that promises a "new way to Wi-Fi." Users can control it via an app, and Google has promised frequent software updates for the device.

The device supports not only 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, but also Bluetooth 4.0 and a few smart home protocols. One such protocol is Weave, the Android team's Internet of Things (IoT) communications layer that it announced at Google I/O alongside Brillo, its Android-derived OS for IoT. It also supports Thread, an IoT wireless protocol created by Google's Nest Labs and Samsung. OnHub also offers IEEE 802.15.4, the basis for Zigbee, another IoT protocol that is popular in many devices.

Smart home communications are kind of a mess right now, so Google appears to be future-proofing the OnHub with a ton of protocol support. It is missing Z-Wave support though, which is probably the most popular smart home protocol.

Backlit Metroid Custom NES [Pics]

GaS reader Ryan ‘Platinumfungi’ Fitzpatrick has collaborated with Noel McEwen to produce his latest custom NES, this time celebrating Metroid. He chose the specific image by playing through the game, concluding:

The final battle through Tourian, and then against Mother Brain, seemed a fitting scene. It’s absolute chaos compared to the rest of Zebes, and the first time you get that far you’re probably going to die… We’ve tried to include all the elements found in that final area of the game, right down to the platform that Samus is standing on.

Well, not literally, but this six magnet set from the wonderfully-named Swagasarus Rex can let you retro-style almost any white goods. As an added bonus, the 16×12 inch “screen” works with dry erase markers so you can use it for lists, notes or painfully slow analog Tetris.

Is it just a game mod, or is it “facilitating piracy”?

by Kyle Orland

Last week, Rockstar banned a number of Grand Theft Auto V players associated with the "FiveM" mod, which offers players an online playspace separate from the game's official "Grand Theft Auto: Online" mode. Yesterday, a Rockstar representative told Ars that the bans were made because the mod is "an unauthorized alternate multiplayer service that contains code designed to facilitate piracy."

That statement got us wondering: Is a mod that merely provides online gameplay on alternate servers really on the same level as simply making an unauthorized copy of a game? The answer, as it turns out, depends quite a bit on what you mean by the phrase "facilitating piracy."

“It does not behave like a crack”

"FiveM is not a crack for GTA V nor does it actively try to facilitate piracy," said Qais Patankar, who goes by qaisjp online. While Patankar didn't contribute code to the FiveM mod directly, he says he was caught up in Rockstar's bans for promoting the mod through online channels like Reddit.

Cat Hunts For Dinner The High-Tech Way [Video]

by JLister

Self-confessed “aspiring geek” Ben Millam decided his cat would be more challenged if it hunted for its dinner. Understandably not wanting to hide cat food around the house, he instead trained the cat to hunt for wiffle balls which contain an RFID chip. When the cat drops the balls into a bowl, they roll past an RFID reader which, via an Arduino computer, dispenses a portion of food.

RIAA says BitTorrent software accounts for 75% of piracy, demands action

by Joe Mullin
Talynebear

so we should go after gun makes for people killing people with guns?

In its long fight against Internet piracy, the Recording Industry Association of America is gunning for the technology that enables it: BitTorrent.

Brad Buckles, RIAA's VP for anti-piracy, has told the CEO of BitTorrent he's "very concerned about the overwhelming use of BitTorrent Inc. developed clients" in pirating his members' works. BitTorrent software, including the popular uTorrent client, "facilitated approximately 75% of the over 1.6 million torrent based infringement of our members' works last year in the US," Buckles wrote in a letter dated July 30.

"Like it or not, BitTorrenting products are the premier products used for peer-to-peer infringement today," RIAA deputy general counsel Victoria Sheckler told Mashable, which published the letter yesterday. "In private discussions that various people have had with BitTorrent over the last few years, they've refused to address the elephant in the room, which is the piracy over the BitTorrent protocol."
