Rather Be Lucky

by Joe Posnanski

This article brought to you by the fallacy of "clutch skill".

The Baltimore Orioles are, in most ways, a better baseball team than they were last year. – Last year, they scored 712 runs. This year, they are on pace to score 760. – Last year, they gave up 705 runs. This year, they are on pace to give up a similar 712. – Last year,…

Lesson #1870 - Creeping People Out, Part XVII

Someday, on a week when my wife and child are not around, and I truly have nothing to do, I might actually go out to a bar and accomplish one of these tasks I set before me. As it stands, I'll settle for creeping out my students instead of the general public.

Also: a reminder that there is a difference between a prank and purpose-driven creeping.

STW SHIRT SALE: Hey, all STW shirts will be on sale this week from September 10-17: free shipping if you get two shirts, and an additional 15% off if you use a certain code! So if you've been interested in a shirt, maybe hold off until tomorrow?

Lesson #1866 - Bad Television Ideas

"Coming Thursday nights to NBC this fall! No, seriously, please watch, this is seriously the best we can do at this point, it's kind of pathetic."

I have way too many of these bad TV ideas floating around my head right now. I make them available for any to utilize or produce a bad Youtube promo from on the condition that I get 15 percent of the profit. Ok?

What genre? Hey, I'm not the musician. Or the lyricist, obviously, for that matter.

If you have a question for recitation, send it on in, and maybe you'll get extra credit for your class this upcoming semester. Really? Oh, I don't know. In an infinite number of infinite universes, you will. Maybe this is one of them.

Episode 919: 1.21 Jigga-XP

This is a version we wrote of this scene way back in about 2007 or 2008. As it turned out, our story and characters evolved so that we didn't want to use it this way. But it was too good to waste, so here it is as the final intermission strip after Episode IV.

Episode V will begin with the next strip.

Client: It says my password is incorrect, but I’m sure I entered it correctly.

Me: Okay, let’s try to log on with my computer. Can I have your password?

The client hands me a (poorly) handwritten note with eight different passwords, all 32 digits long.

Client: It should be one of these.

Me: You know, there’s really no need to make your passwords that long - eight digits should be enough.

Client: That wouldn’t be very safe now, would it?!

Me: How many locks do you have one your front door?

Client: One, why?

Me: Why not ten? It’s much safer.

Client: That’s stupid, it would take ages to get into my house.

Lesson #1794 (Recitation #103) - Demon Portals

You don't need any of your fancy necronomicons or chanting or fancy chalk drawings or anything else like that. The cat will do it all on its own without your help. Mind you, the cat will open the portal on its own schedule, and there may be many cans of tuna and lots of napping before that time comes, but rest assured, it will happen. Because they are cats.

If you have a question for recitation, send it on in with your name and location. Maybe you'll see yours get answered next week.

STW CALENDARS: Kids, we did it! We passed the goal yesterday! Thank you to all of you for your support! At this point, we're aiming to break a few stretch goals to make the calendars better, but because we met the challenge deadline, everyone who gets a physical reward through the Kickstarter will also get a set of STW coasters! Thank you again! Exclamation point.

REDDIT: The AMA yesterday went shockingly, bewilderingly and humblingly well. Thanks to everyone who participated. If you missed it, you can read through the answers here.

Lesson #1791 - Baby Movement

"How in heck did you get up there? . . . and what were you planning to do once you got there? Wait, you can't answer me, you don't know words yet. Oh, stop smiling. I mean, dang it, you're too cute, I give up."

PAGE-A-DAY CALENDARS: Why should you order a calendar now? Well, there's a STW-inspired report card that would come with it, which will never otherwise be available. There are Kickstarter-only prints, and mallets that certainly will not be available later. So those might be a factor for you. And a limited number of calendars will be printed, so there may not be too many available for you to get later. But also, the more calendars ordered as part of the campaign now, the better off they will be - certain add-ons to each page themselves! The Kickstarter is going well, and I really appreciate everyone's support - just wanted to pitch you acting now rather than later. Thanks, everyone!

Here's Another Crazy Trick Shot From Gael Monfils

by John Koblin

Gael Monfils, reigning king of the generally useless trick shot, let a lob slip between his legs, spun around and whacked a bizarre overhead return back to Tommy Haas in Halle today. In typical Monfils fashion, he'd lose the point and the match.
