It’s always annoying when one of a pair of gloves becomes damaged or lost, essentially rendering the other one useless. We’ve already seen how Woolfiller can help breathe new life into woolen garments without the need for darning, and now Glove Love aims to solve the second problem, by coupling single gloves from lost property boxes, and handstitching them to create a brand new pair.

Having just launched a new website, the scheme accepts donations from both glove owners who have lost one and now have a useless spare, those who stumble across lonely gloves left in public spaces, and lost property offices who have amassed a collection of unclaimed items. Organized by nonprofit Do The Green Thing, the organization matches each glove it receives with the closest matching partner — firstly by size and shape, but also by materials and design. Each pair is then handstitched with a label detailing where each glove was rescued and sold online for a flat price of GBP 5, which goes towards supporting the nonprofit’s other green programs.

The initiative is already being supported by companies such as Transport For London and London’s Natural History Museum, who have extensive lost property offices. Are there other ways to give lost or abandoned items a new lease of life?

In an interesting move, HBO series Game of Thrones has decided to extend its reach by creating a mixtape in honor of the show. They’ve hired ten rappers to partake in its content, including OutKast’s Big Boi, Wale, Common, Bodega Bamz, Daddy Yankee and more, for what is titled Catch the Throne. Hip-hop culture and the fantasy show might seem to have little in common but Common himself ensures he has a lot of faith in the show insisting, “there are no limitations to hip-hop culture.” You can check out the tunes yourself by streaming the full mixtape, which has just dropped today, via Soundcloud. Considering how useful smartphones are, there’s still plenty of untapped potential. Locket has already gone some way to earn smartphone owners cash by turning their lock screens into ad space, and now a new app called Power Sleep harnesses the computational power of the devices to crunch data at a time when they’re otherwise not in use.

Cancer researchers at the University of Vienna find themselves with masses of protein data that they can’t sift through themselves — instead, they rely on computers to process it over long periods of time. To get the job done more quickly, the Power Sleep app developed by Samsung Austria is hoping to crowdsource computing power from the processors inside people’s smartphones. Many already use alarm clock apps that require their phones are kept running throughout the night and Power Sleep doubles as a replacement for those apps. Users simply set the alarm and the phone then begins to collect packets of data containing protein sequences from the university, compares them, and sends the results back to the lab. Currently available only for Android, the app is free to download from Google Play. The video below offers some more details about the app:

Power Sleep is similar to existing projects such as Stanford’s Folding@home and UC Berkley’s BOINC, whose technology the app is actually based upon. Are there other projects that could utilize the combined power of otherwise idle smartphone networks?

There's no chance of catching a cold next season—the Marques'Almeida designers, Marta and Paulo, have made sure of it. For Marques'Almeida Fall/Winter 2014, the models went to the ball in elaborate party furs made from Icelandic goat hair. Think oversized coats, shoulder furs, and capes, all a shift from the denim fabric for which they're most known. That's not to say that last season's silk affair didn't carry over: whereas for SS14 Marques'Almeida introduced raw silks in metallic and iridescent tones, this time it was silk-satin pajama suits in stunning citrus shades.

In many ways, the collection was the second part of their turn-of-millennium SS14 story. Ultra-glamorous spaghetti-strap dresses and luscious crushed velvet two pieces brought us back to the year 2000. Ostrich feathers were treated as delicate modes of embellishment, adorning knitted dresses and open back tops. As if all this texture wasn't enough, the design duo threw in a few pony skin handbags in bold yellow and red; my personal favorite was coated in magenta pink fur.

Marques'Almeida has come a long way since its first collection made predominantly from denim. Yet Marta and Paulo's unwavering vision becomes stronger with each season. So why not make the ultimate party collection? They sure have a lot to celebrate.

Sometimes the best way to challenge injustice and inequality is through humour, an idea that Mother London have again explored in their new project. Horrified by the treatment of the LGBT community in Russia, where homosexuality has been classed as a mental illness since 1999, Mother have worked with The Kaleidoscope Trust charity to create something silly that has a serious point to make. To Russia With Love is a limited edition set of hand-painted Russian dolls but in place of bonneted matrons, the sets feature prominent British LGBT figures, namely Sir Elton John, George Michael, Stephen Fry, Graham Norton and Tom Daley (presumably a late addition). The dolls are being auctioned off on eBay to raise funds for the charity and sets are being delivered to both The Kremlin and the Russian Embassy in London.
