“I believe laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing; kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day, and I believe in miracles.”

Hollywood Star Charts
A few summers ago I found myself on a hillside in Portland, Oregon having my star chart mapped. If you’d told me I’d be doing that a few years ago, I would have laughed myself silly. But over the last few years, my willingness to try new things and open my mind a bit more has drastically changed. So when I saw this series of prints inspired by both star charts and stars of the silver screen, I was hooked. Designed by Dorothy, these Hollywood Star Chart litho prints feature constellations named after some of the most culturally significant films of our time. Right now Dorothy is offering two chart styles, Golden Age (based on the night sky over Los Angeles on October 6th, 1927- when ‘The Jazz Singer’ was released) and Modern Day (based on the night sky over New York on June 16th, 1960 – the date of the first showing of Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’ at the DeMille Theater in New York). I love seeing Pulp Fiction charted next to Easy Rider and Chinatown. It’s a great spin on a popular theme and a perfect gift for the film-lover in your life. A modern eclectic Portuguese home
The summer house of clothing designer Nuno Benito is a stunning example of how I like my modern interiors eclectic. The interiors are occupied by objects found while traveling, scouring flea markets and antique stores. Of course I love the rosewood pieces and that rug in the bedroom is bananas. I don’t know if I would put a bright purple rug in my house but it works so well in this application.

Interiors by Be Modern 20th century design
I recently came across Italy based Be Modern, they have a stunning selection of Scandinavian and Brazilian designed furnishings. They also have a section where they show projects that they have worked on. “Be Modern is a project curated by Cinzia Ferrara and Monika Unger, both architects and passionate and knowledgeable collectors of mid Century Design.” It is very evident that Cinzia and Monika share the same love of mid century design as many of us do and they have some fantastic show rooms and displays.

Investigating on the motif of 'naive repetition' and the typology of 'pixel pin-ups'. Reviewing: the suppressed eroticism of Raf Simons' intarsia knits in dialogue with Thomas Bayrle's nonchalant erotica. A lesson in 'neutralized sex' by the means of oversimplification/denial.

Living In: Now And Then
Even though I’m well past my elementary school days, the advent of summer’s long, humid days always signals a time of boundless freedom and endless possibility. The calendar squares representing the summer months become less a demarcation of time and more a symbolic call to adventure—they almost necessitate creek walks, firefly catching, secret midnight meetings with friends, and sleepless nights spent cycling down dim, tree-lined streets. The creators of Now And Then, a coming-of-age tale set during the summer of 1970, seem to be fully aware of this seasonal phenomenon. With a star-studded cast including Demi Moore, Rosie O’Donnell, Christina Ricci, and Thora Birch, this film is guilty-pleasure nostalgia-candy at its best: there is mystery, adventure, neighborhood rivalry, suburban angst, and the uncomfortable stirrings of adolescent summertime romance. Not to mention one of the best things about any period piece: killer interiors. As I watched this sugar-sweet summertime romp recently, I found myself experiencing a familiar sense of restlessness that often accompanies warm weather months. The perfect way to get ready for summer, Now And Then will have you planning bike ride excursions, cemetery seances, and girls versus guys battles of red rover. Bring on the heat! —Max

In São Paulo, a colorful apartment on a budget
Lella and Julio’s apartment, located in São Paulo, Brazil, is the first apartment the couple have lived in together. As is often the case for young couples starting out, they had a lot of ideas for their space, but not a lot of money to buy most of the things they liked. Lella knew exactly what she wanted in terms of furniture and decor, so with that in mind she put a plan into action. Working within their tight budget they did what many people do and became very resourceful. For years they searched high and low for cheap deals on designer pieces (including buying the very chair that a parking lot attendant was sitting on! It was an Eames chair after all). Each of these cleverly procured pieces are now cherished within their home, nestled into their “mini-compositions” that they love to design. As the saying goes, “A place for everything, everything in its place.” It doesn’t matter if it’s high end or less polished DIY pieces, they just love to create, collect and display things in whimsical and unexpected ways. Lella is an architect who also makes art and Julio is an illustrator who shares a business, Mulheresbarbadas with his good friend Henrique. Thank you Lella and Julio and special thanks to Ricardo Bassetti for the lovely photographs. -Shannon
Image above: Most of the wall pieces are from friends. All of the cushions are made by Lella’s mom! The Jacobsen’s chairs we bought from a friend (that had previously bought from and old restaurant owner) and we just repainted them. One of the things we like the most there (besides our cat) is the garland light from Tord Boontje.
Image above: The credenza definitely is a favorite here. It was conceived and designed by Lella! The armchair (Ouro Preto by Michel Arnoult) is Lella’s grandpa heritage. The big frame behind it is a print from my other studio with Henrique (diplomatas.tv), and the other one hanging on the wall is a drawing Lella’s dad did when he was a teenager. The plastic chandelier we bought on supermarket on a trip we did to Copenhagen. The paint on top of the bed is Lella’s. And of course we love our cats (Juliette on the bed and LeBron over the window).

Oak Wood Bike Hanger
If you live in New York and have a nice bike, it can be a mixed blessing. It’s great to have a bike you love and want to ride everywhere, but the downside is the seemingly large network of people who like to steal nice bikes and their parts. For that reason, a lot of people choose to store their bikes inside their apartments to prevent theft. Most of the racks on the market are more function than form, but it’s been great to see designers start to tackle the world of indoor racks. This beautiful oak hanger by Woodstick is a perfect example. Each hanger is handmade in Europe and installs easily on three standard screws. I like that it’s pretty enough to stand on its own when it’s not holding a bike. If you’ve got to store bikes indoors, click here to check out this option in more detail and order online. xo, grace

third is the freshest
When I buy a new book I always take the 3rd book in on the shelf, same for magazines. But, I will shop at secondhand bookstores and not have a problem with the used book being the only one there.
