If you can’t wait to see what the post-apocalyptic future will look like, a Swedish developer has created a Google Street View hack that will make your day. Einar Odberg used Google’s street view data to create a different view of the world after the vines, grasses and trees have taken over. Urban Jungle Street View can go anywhere Google Street View can go, allowing you to see what the world would look like if nature over our streets and cities.

San Diego Zoo, baby gorilla san diego, baby gorilla at san diego zoo, baby gorilla c-section, baby gorilla pneumonia, baby gorilla fighting for life,

As our closest genetic relatives, it’s no wonder that humans are fascinated by gorillas. Last week, we were captivated by the news that a baby girl gorilla was born at the San Diego Zoo. The infant gorilla, which does not yet have a name, was delivered by a rare animal Caesarean section at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. At the time, she appeared well and healthy, but updates indicate that the baby gorilla has contracted pneumonia and is receiving round-the-clock care.

Goldman Sachs Declares Solar Energy Will Soon Be Cheaper Than Fossil Fuels, and Elon Musk is a Genius

by Beth Buczynski

Goldman Sachs, Solar Energy, solar parity, price of solar panels, price of solar energy, Elon Musk, Tesla, Tesla Gigafactory, renewable energy, cost of fossil fuels

They may be one of the greediest, most exploitative firms on Wall Street, but Goldman Sachs knows a profitable investment when they see one. The company recently released a report that states solar energy is fast approaching grid parity – the moment when electricity from solar power becomes the same price or cheaper than electricity produced by fossil fuels. The report also cites the vision of Tesla CEO Elon Musk as a major factor in the growth of renewable energy – as Inhabitat reported, Tesla’s recently announced lithium-ion “Gigafactory” is expected to reduce EV battery costs by more than 30 percent. That, coupled with the fact that solar panel prices continue to plummet, is a big reason why Goldman Sachs sees renewable energy as the path to the future.

I Can Get Behind That: They're Rebooting Gauntlet

danipretto

loved this game. sad it's only coming out on pc

gauntlet-remake.jpg So they're remaking the arcade classic Gauntlet. This is one of the very few reboots I don't actually have a problem with. That is a RARITY. Like finding a diamond at the beach. Obviously, since I have the most experience with spells I will be playing as the wizard. The game will be released this summer for the PC, but I'm not sure if it's coming to any consoles. Are you and I going to beat it together? I hope so. I mean, if it even has an ending. It could just go on forever -- like our love. "I hate you." I HATE YOU WAY MORE. Keep going for the official trailer.

Where Art Meets Gif: The Hypnotic Animated Gifs of David Szakaly

by Christopher Jobson

Where Art Meets Gif: The Hypnotic Animated Gifs of David Szakaly gifs animation

Since 2008 Hungarian/German graphic designer David Szakaly has been churning out some of the most dizzying, hypnotic and wholly original gifs on the web under the name Davidope. His blend of twisting organic forms, flashes of black and white, and forays into pulsing technicolor shapes have inspired legions of others to experiment with the medium, many of whom have been featured here on Colossal. It’s hard to determine the scale of Szakaly’s influence online, but a simple Google image search for “animated gif” brings up dozens of his images that have been shared around Tumblr hundreds of thousands of times.

Szakaly began experimenting with the vector animation program Macromedia Flash back in 1999 where he used the software to create presentations, banners, and other creatives for clients. It was nearly a decade later when he decided to dedicate more time to experimenting with motion graphics and found that Tumblr was a great platform to share his quirky gifs. While he still works in the corporate world on other digital projects, he has also found commercial success making animations for clients around the world. Though it’s his personal work that really stands out. If or when gifs end up on gallery walls, it will be hard to deny Szakaly’s role in getting them there.

The founder of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk, recently released a statement condemning New Jersey governor Chris Christie for banning the sale of electric vehicles directly to consumers. Musk believes that, in the past, laws were created to protect auto dealers from being cheated by car manufacturers, but now the law is being twisted to punish companies who develop new and innovative approaches in the automotive world.

Coooool: Wooden Deck Sinks To Reveal Hidden Pool

danipretto

this would be broken in less than a month

magic-swimming-pool.gif This is a pool built by Agor Engineering that has a wooden floor that can be raised and lowered hydraulically (previously: these concrete ones). You can adjust the height too, so if you just want to sit in tit-deep water and sip cocktails, you can do that. Or you can make it go all the way down and play Marco Pollo. Or you can save yourself tens of thousands of dollars and just buy an inflatable kiddy pool at Target and set that shit up in the front yard and wave at all the cars that pass by. Just don't ask any joggers if they want to join you. Apparently some of them find that creepy. Keep going for a video showing the whole transformation process.

Screw You, Cake!: Happy Pi Day

happy-pi-day.jpg Today is 3.14, Pi Day -- a celebration of the mathematical constant. If you really want to get down, set an alarm for 1:59PM and then it will be 3.14159. Make sure to blow a noisemaker, then tear your shirt off and yell, "EAT SHIT, SQUARES -- IT AIN'T YOUR DAY!" At least that's what I'm going to do. I'm kidding, I hope to be in the middle of an afternoon nap by 1:59. A siesta. Thank God it's Friday, because I don't know if I could survive another workday between me and the weekend. Real talk: who likes pie more than cake? I do. My favorite dessert ever is probably a mixed berry pie with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream on top. You might want to jot that down for future reference. "No, that's okay." I SAID WRITE IT DOWN. Also, my favorite colors are green and brown, my favorite planet was Pluto before they took it away, and now I purposefully haven't chosen a new favorite in protest. My favorite element is fire. Wow, I've got to admit I was a little nervous at first but I think this date is going really well. "This is not a date." Then why are we holding hands? "Wait, why ARE we holding hands?" Let's kiss. Thanks to everyone who reminded me it was Pi day. Also, next year will be a very special Pi Day because it will be 3/14/15 and at 9:26:53 it will be a full ten digits of Pi. Wowie zowie!

This California high-school senior wants to change the world, and if his collection of first place prizes from some of the most prestigious science fairs in the nation is any indication, he’s already well on his way. Chen’s groundbreaking project uses computer modeling to zero in on chemical compounds that could be effective at fighting the dreaded flu. The project took top honors at the Google Science Fair, the Siemens Science Fair, and most recently, the Intel Science Talent Search competition, and has already led to the discovery of some promising flu-fighting drugs.

Two Guys Live In 'Hamster Wheel House' For 10 Days

more completely useless "art"

hamster-wheel-house.gif This is In Orbit, a hamster wheel 'house' with two sets of furniture (one for inside the wheel, one for out) that can be rotated by its two occupants walking simultaneously in opposite direction to access the various pieces of furniture. The wheel is aligned so both use identical pieces of furniture at the same time, so if you want to sleep but the other person wants to sit at the desk you're going to have to fight about it. Apparently two guys lived in the wheel for ten days straight, although I assume they took bathroom breaks because it doesn't look like there's a shitter module. Unless its hang your ass over the side and go to town, in which case I admire the oldschool approach. I peed out of an open car window once. At least I thought it was open. What I actually did was cause the power locks to short-circuit. Keep going for a video.

This is a delicious way to prepare cauliflower. It's similar to the taste of a potato pancake and makes a fabulous side dish – your kids will love them!

My Sicilian friend Julia is a wonderful cook. I remember the first meal I ate in her NYC apartment; lamb chops and fried cauliflower which she calls broccoli a pasteta. She joked that day you can fry a sponge and it would taste good – she's probably right. These are a lightened version of her recipe, made with Pecorino Romano, parsley, egg, garlic, white whole wheat flour and just enough oil to saute them in a pan.

No It's Not: The Monocle Is Allegedly Fashionable Again

danipretto

oh no

monocle-fashion.jpg According to a recent post in The New York Times, monocles are coming back in fashion thanks to hipsters who want to differentiate themselves from the far-too-mainstream-glasses-wearing-hipsters. When reached for comment, Mr. Peanut had this to say, "I'm a f***ing peanut and I still look better than all you jokers."
From the trendy enclaves of Berlin cafes and Manhattan restaurants to gin ads and fashion magazines, the monocle is taking its turn alongside key 21st-century accouterments like sharply tucked plaid shirts and certificates in swine butchering. "I got it just to have my own style, bring something new to the table," said Jose Vega, 23, an aspiring Miami rap musician who can be seen sporting a monocle on his SoundCloud page. Martin Raymond, a British trend forecaster, credits the rise to what he calls "the new gents," a hipster subspecies who have been adding monocles to their bespoke tweed and distressed-boot outfits. On a recent trip to Cape Town, Mr. Raymond said, he saw such a group carrying monocles along with tiny brass telescopes kept in satchels.
Listen, I try not to rag on anybody's style (that is a 100% lie), but monocles? I'm going to have a hard time not saying something the first time I see some dude wearing a monocle at the bar. Something like Good lookin', Colonel Mustard -- I know you did that shit in the library with the candlestick! Those skinny jeans are terrible for your nuts, by the way. Balls were meant to HANG. You see this? "Your penis?" Yeah. "What about it?" Nothing, I just wanted you to see what a real one looks like. Thanks to uglybuckling, who will make an allowance for those involved in steampunk.

In this fun series of painted objects titled “It’s not what it seems” by artist Hikaru Cho, common foods are transformed with deftly applied acrylic paints to look like other foods. A banana is turned into a near photo-realistic cucumber, a tomato becomes a tangerine, and even an egg is made into a glistening eggplant. These are actually some of Cho’s “tamer” artworks, as she’s used these same skills with a paintbrush to alter human faces and body parts by adding extra eyes, zippers and mouths. (via Visual News)

End of the World Cinema: An Abandoned Outdoor Movie Theater in the Desert of Sinai movies Egypt

Somewhere on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, nestled at the foot of a desert mountain range, sits a peculiar sight that is almost completely out of place: hundreds of seats for an outdoor movie theater. Estonian photographer Kaupo Kikkas recently visited the desolate location and brought back these amazing shots of a decaying dream. He shares via his blog that the theater was built not too long ago by a man from France with considerable means. Tons of old seats and a generator were hauled in from Cairo, not to mention a giant screen that looked like the sail of a ship.

Everything was set for opening night, with one small problem. Kikkas says the locals weren’t particularly keen on the whole idea and decided to discreetly sabotage the generator. A single movie was never screened. So now it sits in the middle of a desert, a random movie theater that was never used. You can still see it on Google Maps. (via Lustik, Abandoned Geography)
