Except you are not really there, you are on the couch holding a video game controller with the volume on the TV down so low you can barely hear it so your parents/girlfriend in the next room DEFINITELY can't hear it. Toronto Zoo Panda Tumbles And Rolls Around In The Snow (VIDEO)

Da Mao, one of two giant pandas at the Toronto Zoo, was caught on film rolling around and sliding down snowy hills in his outdoor exhibit. According to the zoo, the panda seemed to be enjoying the snow and may have just discovered a new winter sport called "bear-bogganing." Bear-Bogganing? Now this is a national sport we can get behind and support.
The zoo is also home to Er Shun, the female panda. The two were flown in from China back in 2013 and will stay until 2018. After that, the duo will relocate to the Calgary Zoo and the offspring, if any, will stay in Toronto.
For the meantime, Da Mao will have plenty of time to master the art of tumbling and rolling in all things snow. And it looks like the adorable panda has already had a head start, with cameras catching the big guy pulling off similar stunts at the beginning of the year.

Designed by MoodWorks Architecture with the help of Kristel Hermans Architectuur, the Trek-In is built from FSC-certified wood and features a compact but efficient design, perfect for a family vacation. Inside you’ll find sleeping for six people, a small kitchen and bathroom, plus windows to take in the surrounding views. Trek-In cabins are located on campgrounds all throughout the Netherlands to provide sustainable luxury accommodation for campers.
Trek-In is a cross between the traditional architecture of a home and a tent. The pitched roof design allows for increased sleeping space while the solid wood exterior provides protection from the elements. Each Trek-In is outfitted with a kitchenette with a three-burner stove, refrigerator, running water and kitchen utensils. The bathroom has a shower, toilet and washbasin with hot water provided by a high-efficiency boiler unit. All the lighting is by LEDs and operable windows allow for natural ventilation.

Trek-In was originally designed as part of a competition at the Department of the Built Environment of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), in the Netherlands back in 2010. You can rent a Trek-In cabin at nine different locations around the Netherlands, or purchase one for your own yard. The units are also available as a half size, called the Trek-In Junior, that sleeps up to four but does not include a bathroom.

A Chinese programmer recently saved up 500,000 yuan (~$81,640) to buy 99 new iPhone 6's, then arranged them in a heart to propose to his girlfriend in front of their friends. She said no, presumably because 1) proposing with iPhones is the least romantic thing ever and/or 2) she's a Samsung Galaxy S5 kinda girl. Still, I can't help but feel sorry for the guy. Well, I guess there's only one thing to do when your girlfriend refuses your marriage proposal. "Kill yourself?" God no, I was going to say go after her sister. The Birthplace of Fracking Just Banned Fracking

One of the quieter surprises of this week’s elections took place in Denton, north Texas, pop: 123,000. The city is home to some 272 active fracking wells, with 212 additional wells within it’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, and it sits within the Barnett Shale, one of the largest natural gas fields in the nation. Denton invented fracking, but on Tuesday, residents voted 58.64 percent in favor of a ban on hydraulic fracturing in the city. That sound you hear? That’s the stampede of panicked oil and gas industry attorneys.

For Ratings: Man In 'Snake-Proof Suit' To Be Eaten Alive By Giant Anaconda On Discovery Channel

30-year old 'wildlife expert' Paul Rosolie filmed a scene for the Discovery channel in which he was allegedly eaten alive by a giant anaconda while wearing a 'snake-proof suit'. The channel will air the episode December 7th as part of their Mega-Week, which is a dumb name for a week that doesn't involve being shot out of a cannon while on fire. There's a teaser for the show after the jump, which looks a little suspect. Could they not have found a bigger anaconda (like THIS ONE)? Is the snake actually going to eat him? Apparently the tether is for getting the snake to regurgitate after he's in its belly. Honestly, I bet this is all hype though and it never actually swallows him. Besides, the show has already been shot and Paul is still alive, so it's obvious it doesn't end the way I was hoping.

After great success with other original series, Netflix is about to make its first foray into live-action family entertainment by adapting Lemony Snicket's famous young adult book series A Series of Unfortunate Events, Deadline reports.
A Series of Unfortunate Events tells the story of the orphaned children Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire, who face many trials and misfortunes under the care of an evil uncle all the while trying to uncover the mysterious secret of their parents' deaths. The thirteen books in the series are dark, often funny, tales of misfortune and struggle peppered with good moral lessons.
"On the search for fantastic material that appeals to both parents and kids, the first stop for generations of readers is A Series of Unfortunate Events," said Cindy Holland, VP Original Content at Netflix told Deadline. "The world created by Lemony Snicket is unique, darkly funny and relatable. We can't wait to bring it to life for Netflix members."
Netflix recently acquired the rights to the series, but has not cast or started production on the show. They will be working in tandem with Paramount Pictures, who produced a 2004 movie adaptation starring Jim Carrey that grossed $209 million worldwide.
"I can't believe it," Snicket told Deadline, from an undisclosed location. "After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books."

On Fox News, male soldiers get respect, but a female pilot is “boobs on the ground”

There is apparently nothing a woman can do to get some male Fox News commentators to see her as more than just a pair of breasts, up to and including flying a fighter jet in the US-led military operation in Syria.
Maryam Al-Mansouri is the first female fighter pilot from the United Arab Emirates. She led joint air strikes against ISIS this week, when the UAE joined the United States in a coalition conducting military action against the terror group in Syria.
When Fox News did a brief segment on Al-Mansouri on its Fox Five show on Wednesday, one might have expected that she would have been treated with respect, given the fact that she is currently risking her life to participate in the US-led military effort against terrorism. After all, this is Fox News! They are all about respecting the troops, right?
Apparently that respect is reserved for male soldiers only. Because before Fox's Kimberly Guilfoyle had even finished her brief segment on Al-Mansouri's contribution to the air strikes, her male colleagues interrupted her to joke that Al-Mansouri's participation constituted "boobs on the ground," and to say that "after she bombed it, she couldn't park it."
That would be appalling behavior at any time, but it's particularly galling in a week in which Fox News has been devoting significant coverage to "lattegate," the supposed scandal over President Obama saluting his marine guards while holding a cup of coffee.
So let's get this straight: when male soldiers stand on a runway, Fox News says it is "disrespectful" and "insensitive" for President Obama — the soldiers' commander in chief — to hold a caffeinated beverage while saluting them. But when a female pilot flies a combat mission in a US-led war, it's apparently fine to speak about her as if she is nothing but a pair of breasts, and to suggest that despite her history-making status as the first female Emirati fighter pilot, she must not be able to park her aircraft.
The segment must be seen to be believed. Watch the whole thing above.

Yelp And Michelin Have The Same Taste In New York Restaurants
It’s supposed to be the food fight of the century. In the blue corner we have Yelp, the upstart crowdsourced review site that takes on restaurants of all shapes and sizes. Critics allege that Yelp reviewers are unsophisticated, cheap and obsessed with trivial details of the restaurant experience. But Yelp is a heavyweight. The company is now worth about $5 billion, and poor Yelp reviews can knock a restaurant out of business.
In the red corner, we have the Michelin Guide, a 114-year-old veteran of the field. Michelin reviewers are accused of being pretentious and “out of touch” and of enforcing a rigid view of dining that’s biased against certain cuisines. But Michelin still packs a punch — it can make chefs cry. Of the 27 New York restaurants to have lost their Michelin stars since 2005, 10 — or almost 40 percent — have closed.11
But at least when it comes to New York, this isn’t much of a battle. Yelp and Michelin largely agree on the best restaurants.
Michelin revealed its 2015 ratings for New York on Tuesday. I took each restaurant on the Michelin list and looked up its Yelp rating. I also looked up Yelp ratings for restaurants that have lost their Michelin stars since Michelin first published a New York guide in November 2005. This serves as a control group for “Michelin-esque” restaurants that are no longer performing up to the guide’s standards.12
The tale of the tape is below. Most of the columns should be self-explanatory, but a brief explanation of the others follows:
- Cost is the price of a restaurant on a scale from one ($) to four ($$$$) dollar signs as listed by Yelp.
- Average Yelp stars is a restaurant’s average review on Yelp’s scale from one star (awful) to five stars (great).13
- Adjusted review count is the number of Yelp reviews adjusted for the length of time the restaurant was in business. For more details on this, see the description from our Burrito Bracket project, which used a similar method to evaluate the popularity of burrito-selling establishments.14
- VORB is a formula that combines the review count and the star ratings. It’s also a relic from our Burrito Bracket project.15 When we rated burritos, VORB stood for “Value Over Replacement Burrito” — here, you can think of it as “Value Over Replacement Bistro.”

Keep in mind that VORB reflects both review quality and review volume. Peter Luger Steak House rates high on the VORB list mostly because of its extremely high number of reviews. On the flip side, Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare has a low review volume16 but its Yelp rating (4.62 stars) is terrific.
But let’s get back to the food fight (or lack thereof): There’s a reasonably strong correlation between Yelp and Michelin ratings. Of current and former Michelin-starred restaurants, those with the highest VORB scores are Le Bernardin (28.7), Eleven Madison Park (28.2), Gramercy Tavern (27.7), Daniel (26.6), Per Se (25.9) and Jean-Georges (23.3). Four of those six restaurants have three Michelin stars, the top rating. The exceptions are Daniel, which was just demoted to two Michelin stars, and Gramercy Tavern, which has one.
By contrast, most of the restaurants with the lowest VORB scores have since lost their Michelin stars, (and in some cases have also closed). The bottom five are the defunct Vong and the still-open Laut, Pok Pok NY, Lan Sheng and A Voce Columbus. Mind you, these aren’t the worst restaurants in New York. I’d personally vouch for a couple of them as being pretty good. But the standard is high, and Yelpers feel they’re closer to average than to the top tier.
The correlation between Yelp stars and Michelin stars is highly statistically significant.17 Indeed, it forms an eerily linear progression. The restaurants to have lost their Michelin stars have 3.83 Yelp stars on average, barely better than the average for all restaurants citywide. Each additional Michelin star translates to about 0.2 additional Yelp stars. The one-starred Michelin restaurants have an average Yelp rating of 4.02 stars. The Michelin two-star restaurants have a Yelp rating of 4.25. The Michelin three-star restaurants average 4.47 Yelp stars.18

Still, these reflect the group averages, and there are a few restaurants that buck the trend. Gramercy Tavern, as I mentioned, is rated very highly by Yelp but has just one Michelin star.
Where do differences arise? One apparent theme has to do with cost — but it runs in the opposite direction of what you might expect. Controlling for their Michelin ratings, Yelp actually rates restaurants higher when they are more expensive. Each additional dollar sign (e.g. going from $$ to $$$) works out to 0.2 additional Yelp stars; the relationship is highly statistically significant.

What the heck? I can think of several plausible theories:
- Generally, service and decor scale up with price more than food quality does. Many people are skeptical about this, but Michelin star ratings are theoretically based on the quality of the food alone19 whereas Yelp reviewers are presumably also concerned with service and decor. Under this theory, it’s not that Yelpers like expensive restaurants. But they’re willing to pay for better service and that’s factored into their ratings.
- It could also be, as has been shown to be the case with wine, that food tastes better when it’s more expensive, especially to nonprofessional reviewers. Michelin reviewers — who also have the luxury of eating on an expense account — may be modestly better at avoiding this bias.
- Price may be a proxy for the market’s view of a restaurant’s quality. Maybe you have a Michelin star; if you can’t persuade your customers to pay Michelin prices, it won’t help you stay in business. Prices and Yelp ratings both reflect the wisdom of crowds, and so it shouldn’t be a surprise if they’re highly correlated with one another.
- Finally, perhaps Michelin does a poor job of picking affordable restaurants that break from the template of the “Michelin-esque” experience. More on this in a moment.
Keep in mind that this finding is derived only from New York restaurants that currently or formerly held a Michelin star — a very narrow range of culinary experience. In looking at a vastly different type of restaurant — those which serve burritos — my colleague Anna Maria Barry-Jester instead came away with the impression that Yelp reviewers place too much emphasis on price and portion size as opposed to the quality of the food.
My personal experience has been that perception of price has a lot to do with expectations. You might be outraged when a mediocre sandwich costs $13 at a museum cafeteria or a ballgame — or when a mediocre burrito costs $11. But later that night, you might not flinch at spending $350 while taking your wife out on her birthday because you were expecting the steep bill.20
Another theme is that certain cuisines do poorly in Yelp as compared with their Michelin star ratings. Consider the four restaurants with the lowest VORB scores. They are (or were), respectively, a Vietnamese restaurant, a Malaysian restaurant, a Thai restaurant and a Chinese (Szechuan) restaurant.
It’s not that Yelpers rate these cuisines poorly overall. But in the United States, they tend to be associated with cheap takeout food. Even to a fairly experienced diner, a Michelin-starred Thai restaurant might seem like an oxymoron.21 Michelin’s reviewers may also lack a template for these types of restaurants. Zabb Elee, an unpretentious Thai restaurant in the East Village, earned a Michelin star this year. It’s very good, but most foodies I know prefer SriPhaPhai in Queens (SriPhaPhai also gets much better Yelp ratings).
Outside of the canonical European cuisines (French, Italian) and “new American” food,22 Michelin seems to struggle. Thai restaurants and Indian restaurants, for example, have often won Michelin stars only to lose them a couple of years later. It’s almost as though Michelin is cycling through representatives of these cuisines at random — putting forth some effort to increase the diversity of its list but not going to great lengths to identify the best examples. To a lesser extent, Michelin may struggle with American food served in a more informal setting or for what lack of a better term might be called “hipster” cuisine. The Breslin, a gastropub in the Ace Hotel, has a Michelin star, but there are dozens of similar restaurants with higher Yelp ratings.
Could Michelin also have a pro-Manhattan bias? In one respect, this might seem self-evident. Almost 80 percent of the Michelin-starred restaurants in the 2015 Guide are in Manhattan while only 40 percent of New York’s restaurants are.
One way to test this is to look at whether Michelin-starred restaurants in Brooklyn and Queens23 receive higher Yelp ratings on average. If so, that might indicate that restaurants in the outer boroughs need to do more to receive the same level of recognition from the Michelin Guide.
The evidence is ambiguous. Michelin-starred restaurants24 in Brooklyn and Queens have an average Yelp rating of 4.17, as compared with 3.99 for those in Manhattan. In most respects, the challenge in evaluating restaurants is the same as when looking at any other statistical distribution. It’s easy to identify the outliers — the extraordinary restaurants and the execrable ones. Michelin and Yelp largely agree on those. Distinguishing the very good restaurants from the average ones is more challenging. There may be no substitute for eating your way through them.

London Proposes £600M Bicycle Highway to Float Along the River Thames

A new bicycle lane in London could allow cyclists to float on the River Thames. The Thames Deckway, proposed by River Cycleway Consortium Ltd, would create a bicycle-only path along the river that would offer commuting cyclists a relaxing new route. Designed by artist Anna Hill and architect David Nixon, the floating pathway would stretch 12 kilometers throughout London along the Thames’ south bank.

But it's hard to argue that the new studio Rogers built to house Sportsnet's hockey broadcasts is a loss for viewers.
Just look at it.
The futuristic new space is 11,000 square feet, with nine different sets and 52 monitors, and features a rotating anchor desk that allows cameras to shoot from all angles, according to a press release. There is also an LED floor that shows video and images, and an 3.3-by-11.6-metre screen — reportedly the largest ever used in a Canadian TV studio.
It also has enough cameras to shoot three live broadcasts for three different networks at the same time.
The new studio cost $4.5 million to build, according to the Toronto Star, and is housed on the 10th floor of the CBC building.
"It's cutting edge and allows us to showcase the game in ways never seen before that will keep fans on the edge of their seats," said Gord Cutler, senior vice president of NHL Production at Rogers, in the press release.
Each of the 30 NHL teams are represented by pucks on an interactive wall that lets analysts pluck one off and place it on a table to find out the team's stats.
But more than just the set will be different this year. George Stroumboulopoulos will replace Ron MacLean as main host. But don't worry, both MacLean and Don Cherry will still host Coach's Corner.
The iconic "Hockey Night In Canada" musical montages are also being cut back, according to the National Post.
The spiffy new studio will debut Oct. 8 when the Montreal Canadiens face off against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first game of the season.
