MOMENT | Esquire Magazine, April 1972.

by Lizzie
When I found this image of Esquire's April 1972 issue, I thought, wow, she's clothed. I'm so unaccustomed to seeing a woman on the cover of a men's magazine with pants and a shirt on that I was taken aback. Instead of complain about the current state of magazine imagery (for both men's and women's magazines), I thought it'd be better just to point out how incredible this image of Laurie Bird is and how great a cover it made. And Two Lane Blacktop, if you don't know, now you know.

IFLA -- World-wide review of FRBRoo 2.2

by russiansledges
Russian Sledges

new acronym alert: FRBROO

FRBROO is an interpretation of the FR family of models using object-oriented methodology. It is not the same as the three existing entity-relationship models, FRBR, FRAD and FRSAD, nor is it the same as the consolidated entity-relationship model currently under development. But the ontology described in FRBROO is based on IFLA’s conceptualization of bibliographic and authority data such as expressed in the FRBR, FRAD and FRSAD entity-relationship models, although it also somewhat deviates from the original models on some points. However, the differences between FRBROO version 2.2 and the FRBR, FRAD and FRSAD models are not sufficient for FRBROO version 2.2 to be regarded as a distinct model, but as a related model. The original FRBROO version 1 was published in 2009 and was based on FRBR alone. The updated version of FRBROO, version 2.2, is based on all three FR models and it is the version currently under review.

NEW ZEALAND: Auckland Bank Creates "GAYTMs" To Celebrate Pride Month

by Joe Jervis
Via Stuff New Zealand:
Sedate inner-city banking has been transformed with ANZ unveiling four fabulous "GAYTMs" in Auckland and Wellington to celebrate diversity and inclusion for New Zealand's rainbow community. Dripping with rhinestones, the customised cash machines were accompanied today by ANZ staff dressed as their drag queen alter-egos, a colourful scene that stopped passersby in their tracks. "I think it's awesome," said one woman as she photographed the sparkling spectacle in Wellington's Willis St today. The art installations celebrated the bank's partnership with Auckland's Pride Festival, which would run throughout this month, and Wellington's Out In The Park on February 14, and marked its accreditation into the Rainbow Tick programme. The machines welcomed customers with rainbow-friendly messages on their screens and printed "out and proud" on receipts.
The concept first appeared in Sydney last year.

eff-blog:

Dororo is being crowdfunded for a stream release with subtitles for the very first time! This is one of the classic series produced by Mushi Production which started anime as a whole beginning with Astro Boy in 1963. Dororo was released in 1969 as the last black and white anime and the first title from the World Masterpiece Theater staple.

Here are a few reasons why you should definitely pledge (all money is sent only if the goal is reached):

  • One of Osamu Tezuka’s best anime.
  • From an all-star crew of anime makers. (Gisaburô Sugii, Yoshiyuki Tomino, Osamu Dezaki, Noboru Ishiguro, Isao Tomita, etc.)
  • Based on one of Tezuka’s best manga which was adapted into a cult video game and popular movie.
  • It’ll have a chance at a DVD release later if popular enough.
  • Ensuring at least a few series are successful will keep Anime Sols afloat and all the classic shows they are giving a chance to.
  • For fans of classic anime, this would be the oldest TV anime ever to get a subtitled release.

Bielefeld Conspiracy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I just got the bielefeld deck for agricola

There are a number of conflicting theories about the reasons behind the joke's gain in popularity, the most popular being a flame war between Usenet admins and the Bielefeld based Z-Netz BBS about text encodings. [...] In November 2012, German Chancellor Angela Merkel referred to the Bielefeld Conspiracy in public when talking about a town hall meeting she had had in Bielefeld, adding: "…if it exists at all." and "I had the impression that I was there."

Travels with My Censor

by Peter Hessler

My Chinese censor is Zhang Jiren, an editor at the Shanghai Translation Publishing House, and last September he accompanied me on a publicity tour. It was the first time I’d gone on a book tour with my censor. When I rode the high-speed train from Shanghai to Beijing, Zhang sat beside me; at the hotel in Beijing, he stayed on the same floor. He sat in on my interviews with the Chinese media. He had even prepared the tour schedule on a spreadsheet, which was color-coded to represent five types of commitments, with days that lasted as long as thirteen hours. Other authors had warned me about such schedules, so before the tour I sent Zhang a request for more free time. His response was prompt: “In my experience, the tours in China are always tough and exhausting. Hope you understand it.”

Ambulance Takes Woman to Art Museum for Last Visit

On Tuesday, a terminally ill woman was taken via ambulance to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam so she could visit the arts and history museum one last time. The moving event, captured in a photograph, was the work of Stichting Ambulance Wens Nederland (Ambulance Wish Foundation Netherlands), a Dutch organization that fulfills the last wishes of terminally ill, non-mobile patients with a fleet of custom ambulances and 200 volunteer medical personnel. The group also took two other terminally ill people to the museum during the Tuesday trip. According to the organization’s website, they have fulfilled nearly 6,000 wishes since their founding in 2007.

You have not seen that Boston Marathon video - The Washington Post

by russiansledges
Anyone who is in the business of eliciting people’s memories about historic events knows that collective memory has a way of displacing personal experience. Maria Konnikova recently wrote in The New Yorker about psychological studies that show that people typically misremember what, when and how they learned about big things that happened just a couple of years earlier. Oles Adamovich and Daniil Granin, two Russian writers who compiled an oral history of the Siege of Leningrad, recalled that their subjects would spend hours reproducing received memories — stock stories that they had read in books or newspapers or seen in films — before getting to their own — if they ever did.
