The Magic of Edgestitching

by Amy

Edgestitching bra seams | Cloth Habit

Do you press seams when making a bra?

I’ve been asked this question a few times. You may be surprised to know that iron pressing isn’t necessary in making bras. The only time I have pressed during the making of a bra is when I have made my own underwire channeling. That’s it!

But wait, you ask, how can you get smooth cup seams without pressing?

It’s easy to get into the habit of treating every seam the same way. After all, home sewing instructions place a lot of emphasis on pressing as the way to a truly flat or smooth seam. It’s the key to a professional look and all. And while that is true for many garments, there are other techniques that often get overlooked as being equally important.

Let me explain. Many home sewing patterns place too little emphasis on understitching and edgestitching. Both of these stitch techniques are common in industrial sewing and important to flat seams.

In bra manufacturing, irons rarely if ever touch a bra. One reason is that most bra materials don’t respond well to pressing. Nylon and polyester knits just don’t hold a crease. (Not to mention it’s easy to melt nylon with your iron if you’re not careful! Ask how I know that one.) Unless you are using a woven fabric from a natural fiber, most bra fabrics will flatten and fold with the aid of *stitching* more than the aid of heat.

Let’s call this “stitch pressing”–pressing with a stitch rather than with an iron.

Edgestitching bra seams | Cloth Habit

Edgestitching is a form of topstitching in that it shows on the right side of fabric. Instead of just being decorative, it actually serves to flatten a seam and is done very closely to the seam. To edgestitch, you want to stitch about a needle’s width away from the seam, and catch the seam allowance while doing so. A “needle’s width” is about 1/16” to 1/8” (2-3mm) but no more than that.

For bra cups with seams, you have two choices:

1. Turn both seam allowances to one side of the bra cup and edgestitch them down on one side of the seam. This is how I usually sew cups made from lightweight bra fabrics and laces.

Edgestitching bra seams | Cloth Habit

2. Open the seam allowance and edgestitch along each side of the seam. This works well if the bra fabric is denser and the seam needs less bulk. Normally, I edgestitch from the right side of the cup but if the seam allowances won’t stay open I often edgestitch from the wrong side of the bra with the seam allowances facing me. This helps to keep those bulkier seams open and truly flat:

Edgestitching bra seams | Cloth Habit

While you are edgestitching, use your hands to flatten the seam as it is going under foot. If you gently push the side that you are edgestitching away from the seam, your seam will be flatter than any amount of pressing would achieve—and will stay that way permanently!

Now some of you have wondered whether pressing helps smooth a cup seam that has ripples. As many you know from hemming knits, once ripples are there, they stay there, since the stitching has stretched out the fabric. If ripples are ailing you, I wrote up a few tips for smoother cup seams in this issue of my newsletter.

And p.s. A happy happy spring sewing everyone! I’ve been gardening more than sewing the last couple of weeks but who can resist roses!

Wiccan Prayer in Iowa House Highlights Religious Freedom Problem

by Joseph Laycock

Last week, when Wiccan priestess Deborah Maynard delivered the opening prayer for the Iowa House of representatives the leader of the Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans (CUUPS) in Cedar Rapids became just the third Pagan priestess to offer such a prayer before a state body. Some members of the Iowa house boycotted her prayer by arriving late, and Rep. Rob Taylor (R-West Des Moines) actually turned his back to Maynard claiming it was a form of peaceful protest in response to a practice he perceived as spiritually evil.

bug_00This incident occurred almost one year after the Town of Greece v. Galloway decision in which the Supreme Court ruled that “sectarian” prayers before government meetings are constitutional, so long as no one is coerced to participate and the government doesn’t deliberately exclude representatives of other faiths from taking their turn to offer the prayer.

In a dissenting opinion, Elena Kagan argued that sectarian prayers are inappropriate in contexts such as town hall meetings where religious minorities may be petitioning the government for help. But she prefaced her dissent by explaining: “I believe that pluralism and inclusion in a town hall can satisfy the constitutional requirement of neutrality; such a forum need not become a religion-free zone.”

Rep. Taylor’s response to last week’s prayer shows why inclusion is not a simple solution. When minority religions give opening prayers, there have been retaliations from the majority in the form of political protests and—in some cases—vandalism and death threats. So the promise of rotating in prayers by minority faiths is less viable in practice than on paper. At worst, the language of pluralism in these contexts becomes a fig leaf that allows the religious majority to circumvent the Establishment Clause. According to RadioIowa, Dave Heaton (R-Mount Pleasant), a Christian, said “If we want to make a stink about who can do this and who can’t, we’re liable to lose the whole thing.” The “whole thing” in this case refers to opening prayers that are sectarian and predominately Christian.

But there’s a deeper problem. Since Maynard “just wanted to show that the House is very inclusive of all faith traditions,” and Taylor regards Wicca as evil and destructive, one of these religious commitments will have to be disregarded. At stake in the response to Maynard’s prayer is a theoretical problem about what religious pluralism is and ought to be. How can you include faiths that do not value inclusion? And if you exclude these faiths, how can you claim to be inclusive? This is the paradox of pluralism.

Religion scholars have presented different theories of pluralism and pointed out different obstacles in approaching it. Diana Eck gives a three-fold theory of religious pluralism:

1) Pluralism is not just diversity because it requires active participation and an “attunement to the life and energies of one another.”

2) Pluralism is not just tolerance because it involves an active attempt to understand each other.

3) Pluralism is not just relativism because it entails, “engagement with, not abdication of, differences and particularities.”

Stephen Prothero has warned of the dangers of “pretend pluralism,” in which we don’t sincerely understand the religious other because we pay attention only to those religious values and differences that are pleasing while ignoring commitments we find controversial or distasteful. Prothero writes, “We need to understand religious people as they are—not just at their best but also their worst. We need to look at not only their awe-inspiring architecture and gentle mystics but also their bigots and suicide bombers.”

This is where pluralism gets tough. For Taylor and like-minded Christians, opposition to Maynard’s religion, and a refusal to engage with it on its own terms, is a religious commitment. Taylor explained:

I prayed about this a lot the last several days and I thought to myself: ‘What would Jesus do?’ Jesus would be in the chamber, from my perspective. He would passively protest and then he would seek that individual out, have a peaceful conversation with them about why his way was the best way, so that’s what I did today.

Other Christians conspicuously engaged in “counter-prayer” during Maynard’s invocation. Some cited the “powers and principalities” referenced in Ephesians and claimed that Maynard’s prayer was casting a demonic influence over the Iowa representatives. Pastor Michael Demastus explained, via RadioIowa:

“I was praying that she [Maynard] would come to know the one true God. I believe that the occult is dark. I do believe that’s not the place to seek guidance from, so I was not praying against her. I was praying against what she was doing.”

We can argue that these intolerant views are not “real” religious values, but this would be to engage in pretend pluralism. If we just dismiss Taylor’s opposition to Maynard then we are not engaging with his particularities seriously.

Russell McCutcheon concludes that the kind of pluralism described by Eck, while well intentioned, is impossible. He suggests that pluralism comes with “undisclosed ground rules” that exclude certain religious commitments: “The only way to have such co-existing differences is if the other is already well on the way to playing one’s own game, making the leftover, minor differences something you can easily put up with.”  In other words, pluralism is very inclusive of religious traditions who already play well together, but exclusive toward those that do not.

As McCutcheon points out, there is a danger that when we understand ourselves to be promoting pluralism, we are enforcing a tacit division between “good” and “bad” religions (what Leonard Primiano called a “two-tiered model of religion”). A recent example is the fracas that occurred last year when The Satanic Temple offered to re-enact a black mass as part of a Harvard cultural studies club. The Temple’s multicultural performance was quickly reinterpreted as “hate speech” and the event was cancelled. While Harvard prides itself on being diverse and inclusive, the Temple ran afoul of the undisclosed ground rules and was denied a place in the cultural studies club.

Maynard encountered a problem similar to that of the Harvard cultural studies club. She crafted her prayer to “show respect to all faiths,” even invoking God before any other forces or personages, apparently to welcome her Christian critics. But how can a pluralist show respect to faiths that reject the project of pluralism?

The Canadian Supreme Court ruled this week that no public prayers can be held before city council meetings. In that court’s view, even non-sectarian prayers violate the principle of neutrality because they favor belief over non-belief. Here in the United States, it seems premature to conclude that Elena Kagan is wrong and that government meetings must become religion-free zones. One can imagine an uneasy détente in which representatives are conspicuously absent whenever they disagree with the sectarian prayer being given that day. This situation would be constitutional according to Greece v. Galloway, but it would also turn daily meetings into one more battlefield in the culture war.

It’s even possible that if Taylor actually did have a “peaceful conversation” with Maynard about their respective faiths (as he suggested Jesus would have done) some sort of mutual understanding could be reached. Either way, this case starkly reveals that pluralism is not a simple undertaking. Anyone can achieve pluralism with well-meaning and like-minded people of different faiths. But finding a harmonious relationship with exclusivists requires more than just “being nice.”

Hanging Dopp Kit

by Taylor

Since a few people have asked about the status of my backpack pattern, I thought I would give a quick update. The process of getting the pattern ready and formatted is taking far longer than I expected. If I had known this from the beginning, I would have waited to make the announcement that I was releasing it. The good news is that I am making progress. The pattern itself and the instructions are finished, I am simply waiting on graphics and illustrations. Since I’m not a graphic artist or illustrator, I have to wait my turn to have these services completed.

I greatly appreciate the continued interest in the pattern. Trust me, I want to get it out as soon as I possibly can. Once I have an official release date, I will be posting about it. My goal is to offer a pdf. version (hopefully in more than one format so it can be printed at home or on a large format printer), and I also hope to offer a physical paper version as well.

On to other things…

cordura diy dopp kit

For over a year, my wife and I have been planning and saving for a trip to Europe, specifically Paris and Barcelona. We happen to be leaving this week, and I couldn’t be more excited! Due to the threat of a French air traffic controller strike (which they have now called off), we are also getting to see a little bit of London on a long layover before taking the train to France.

One of the things I needed for this trip and any travel in general is some kind of bag to hold all of my toiletries (toothpaste, contact solution, shampoo, etc.). Previously I carried everything in gallon sized plastic bags, which was less than ideal. The plastic bags would tear, sometimes they wouldn’t close, and they made organizing impossible.

Since I had some extra Cordura fabric and a free Saturday, I drew up a plan, made a quick pattern, and put this thing together. It was actually a little more complicated than that, but I’m happy with the result. The pockets are sized so that I can easily pull out my quart sized bag of liquids when going through security at an airport.

cordura diy dopp kit

Depending on my packing situation, the dopp kit can fold in half and snap shut, or it can unsnap and lay flat. Lots of toiletry type bags are big chunky brick-like bags. These are fine if you have a large suitcase, but trying to pack in a way that leaves a large enough place for that shape of bag can be challenging. This kit can lay across a suitcase if necessary to make packing easier.

cordura diy dopp kit

The back side has shallow sleeve pockets to hold flat things like bandages. Oh, and that nifty clip you see on the left side of the picture not only allows the kit to hang from a towel bar or loop around another object, but it also doubles as bottle opener! You know, for hotel beer. The company that makes that clip makes some other cool hardware that I have used on another bag (post to follow when I get home from my trip).

cordura diy dopp kit

As I mentioned above, I used 1000 denier Cordura nylon fabric, which is easy to clean and dries out quickly if it gets wet. I’m looking forward to testing this dopp kit out on the road!

the “lolita” covers

gowns:

russialovespilots:

gowns:

here’s a question: if vladimir nabokov’s “lolita” is truly the psychological portrait of a messed up dude and not the girl — let alone a sexualized little girl, as all of the sexualization happens inside humbert humbert’s head — then why do all the covers focus on a girl, and usually a sexy aspect of a girl, usually quite young, and none of them feature a portrait of humbert humbert?

image

here are nabokov’s original instructions for the book cover:

I want pure colors, melting clouds, accurately drawn details, a sunburst above a receding road with the light reflected in furrows and ruts, after rain. And no girls. … Who would be capable of creating a romantic, delicately drawn, non-Freudian and non-juvenile, picture for LOLITA (a dissolving remoteness, a soft American landscape, a nostalgic highway—that sort of thing)? There is one subject which I am emphatically opposed to: any kind of representation of a little girl.

and yet, the representations of the sexy little girl abound.

i became driven by curiousity. why did this happen? why is this happening?

i am not alone — there’s a book about this, with several essays and artists’ conceptions about the politics and problems of representation surrounding the covers of “lolita.” this new yorker article gives a summary of the book and its ideas, and interviews one of the editors:

Many of the covers guilty of misrepresenting Lolita as a teen seductress feature images from Hollywood movie adaptations of the book— Kubrick’s 1962 version, starring Sue Lyon, and Adrian Lyne’s 1997 one. Are those films primarily to blame for the sexualization of Lolita?

As is argued in several of the book’s essays, the promotional image of Sue Lyon in the heart-shaped sunglasses, taken by photographer Bert Stern, is easily the most significant culprit in this regard, much more so than the Kubrick film itself (significantly, neither the sunglasses nor the lollipop ever appears in the film), or the later film by Adrian Lyne. Once this image became associated with “Lolita”—and it’s important to remember that, in the film, Lolita is sixteen years old, not twelve—it really didn’t matter that it was a terribly inaccurate portrait. It became the image of Lolita, and it was ubiquitous. There are other factors that have contributed to the incorrect reading, from the book’s initial publication in Olympia Press’s Traveller’s Series (essentially, a collection of dirty books), to Kubrick’s startlingly unfaithful adaptation. At the heart of all of this seems to be the desire to make the sexual aspect of the novel more palatable.

here’s a couple of kubrick inspired covers:

image

which very well could have, after tremendous sales, have influenced the following covers:

image

…straying so far from the intention of nabokov that the phenomenon begins to look more like the symptom of something larger, something sicker.

after a lot of researching covers, it was here, in this sampling of concept covers for the book about the lolita covers, that i found an image that best represents the story to me:

image

[art by linn olofsdotter]

but why aren’t all the covers like that? even the ones published by “legitimate” publishing companies, with full academic credentials, with no intended connection to the film; surely they must have read nabokov’s instructions for the cover. and yet, look at the top row of lolita covers: all legitimate publishing companies, not prone to smut. and yet.

image

my conclusion is that the lolita complex existed before “lolita” (and of course it did) — a patriarchal society is essentially operating with the same delusions of humbert humbert. nabokov did not produce the sexy girl covers of lolita, and kubrick had only the smallest hand in it. it was what people desired, requested and bought. the image of the sexy girl sells; intrigues; gets the hands on the books.

as elizabeth janeway said in her review in the new york review of books: “Humbert is every man who is driven by desire, wanting his Lolita so badly that it never occurs to him to consider her as a human being, or as anything but a dream-figment made flesh.”

isn’t that our media as a whole? our culture as a whole?

the whole lot of them/us — seeing the world through humbert-tinted glasses, seeing all others as Other and Object, as solipsistic dream-reality. as i scroll through the “lolita” covers i wonder: where’s the humanity in our humanity?

THANK YOU

THIS PERSON IS SO ON POINT

Gillian Welch on How April 14th Came to Be ‘Ruination Day’ : Longreads Blog

by russiansledges
April 14 marks the anniversary of three awful, fabled events: the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in 1865; the Titanic striking an iceberg in 1912 (it sunk in the wee hours of the 15th); and the Black Sunday dust storm of 1935. Gillian Welch first brought attention to this foreboding historical confluence on her 2001 album Time (The Revelator), which has two songs chronicling the events of April 14: “April the 14th, Part 1″ and “Ruination Day, Part 2.” I caught up with Welch to discuss how she first made the connection, and how the songs in question came about.

Cards Against Humanity’s breakup of Maine island stirs controversy

by russiansledges
...extreme subdividing and the installation of a platform, shed and safe within 22 feet of the lake’s normal high-water line are in violation of Liberty’s subdivision and shoreland zoning ordinances, according to Liberty Code Enforcement Officer Donald Harriman. Late last month, Harriman wrote to three legal entities involved with Cards Against Humanity and Hawaii 2 and gave them until April 15 to cease all commercial activity on the island, revoke the 250,000 “licenses” that grant the exclusive use of 1 square foot of land and remove the shed and platform from its present location. If this does not happen, he wrote, the town could levy fines of no less than $100 per day per violation and up to $2,500 per day per violation. “While it is unlikely that the court would order penalties of $625,000,000 per day (250,000 multiplied by $2,500), the town will seek the maximum fines, penalties and legal fees as may be awarded by the court,” Harriman wrote in the letter dated March 31. “A remedial plan acceptable to the town must be in place on or before April 15, 2015, to avoid the filing of a land use enforcement action in court.”

California Drought Map
California Drought Map

The last three years have left California facing a historic drought. This month, California Governor Jerry Brown issued an unprecedented mandate: Californians must reduce water use by 25%—or the state may face dire consequences. What factors are contributing to this drought?

California Drought Precipitation

While drought is no foreign concept to California, this stretch has been particularly brutal. California gets its water from 3 main sources—snowpack, water stored in reservoirs, and water pumped from underground aquifers—but each have been uniquely affected. For snowpack, 2015 has been a record-low year.

Drought5

Reservoirs have also remained below average, with some at as low as 9% capacity.

Drought4

Over the last 5 years, these factors have contributed to the most severe drought California has experienced.

RU 800 S is a truly massive piece of machinery that renews railroad tracks by replacing rails, railway ties, and gravel track beds simultaneously. The machine accomplishes each task on-site in what is essentially a mobile automated assembly line the length of many train cars. Its various functions are depicted in this curiously enthralling video. The RU 800 S is built by Austrian manufacturer Plasser & Theurer. It is not the largest machine of its kind–that distinction belongs to the Plasser & Theurer SVM1000.

DARIEN, Conn. (AP) — In one of the country's richest towns — where Mercedes, BMWs and Land Rovers cruise tree-lined streets of multimillion-dollar homes — a man who proposed building more accordable housing says fellow residents took out their anger on his son: a 9-year-old boy demoted to a lower-level Little League team. Christopher Stefanoni says in a federal lawsuit that residents of Darien are so worried that affordable housing will draw black people to town that they'll do just about anything to stop it, including using his son to retaliate against him. Town and Little League officials say that's completely false. "Darien is a little white enclave, sort of a holdout segregated town," said Stefanoni, 50, a Harvard-educated father of five who has lived in town since 2000. "The attitudes that people in Darien have are very exclusionary, demeaning. When they go after your kids, they've crossed the line."
