margaret howell spring 2014

oh to be the woman decked out in all margaret howell. i have long been a fan of the iconic designer, but somehow haven’t written much about her on my blog over the years. part of it has to do with the fact that even though i love the style, it hasn’t always been the way i dress myself. until more recently, when i want everything i wear to be this kind of classic, menswear-inspired, nautical-themed kind of style. times like this, i want to go through her entire archive of collections dating all the way back to 1980 and start fashioning my entire wardrobe after her clean and simple aesthetic. it’s because of her that i’ve always wished i could pull of a beret. and how does she make a simple fedora so decidedly cool? i always feel kinda like a tool when i wear one, but now i wanna try it again. with a necktie and a cool jacket and some leather sandals. yes, please!

Parents’ Nightmare: Futile Race to Stop Killings - NYTimes.com

by russiansledges
He recounted seeing Mr. Rodger come home, bloodied and beaten, after an encounter at a bar. Mr. Rodger, in his manifesto, said he had begun trying to push women over a ledge at the bar, sparking the fight that led to several men beating him up. Mr. Pollard said it had taken hours to calm Mr. Rodger, as he fumed about the men who had attacked him. “He started saying: ‘I’m going to kill them. I’m going to kill them. I’m going to kill myself,’ ” he said.

Thai King to endorse coup leader General Prayuth Chan-ocha

Thai coup leader General Prayuth Chan-ocha will receive the endorsement of King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Monday as head of a ruling military council and the general will then give his first address to the nation since seizing power last week.

Related ArticlesThe royal command ceremony, a significant formality in a country where the monarchy is the most important institution, will begin at 10:49 a.m. (0349 GMT), the army said. It gave no reason for that time but it is likely it is deemed auspicious.

Prayuth’s address is likely to be viewed with conflicting attitudes in a country polarized by nearly a decade of rivalry between the royalist establishment, of which Prayuth is a member, and a populist politician who broke the political mould.

Prayuth will outline steps he intends to take, including the proclamation of an interim constitution and the setting up of a legislative council, the military said. It did not elaborate.

The military said it seized power last Thursday to end six months of sometimes violent protests against the populist government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

But it has taken over with a heavy hand, detaining perhaps scores of people, most allied with Yingluck’s government, throwing out the constitution, dissolving the Senate and censoring media. Anyone who insults the monarchy or violates the military’s orders will be tried in a military court.

Despite warnings, small crowds of people voicing opposition to the May 22 coup have been gathering in Bangkok as well as in the north and northeast, strongholds of the ousted government.

About 1,000 people thronged around Victory Monument, a central Bangkok hub, on Sunday, occasionally confronting lines of soldiers with riot shields, but there have been no clashes.

In what will be seen as a hopeful sign, the military has relaxed restrictions on Yingluck, allowing her to go home although she is under military supervision.

“She is free to come and go as she pleases but will have to inform us as a sign of mutual respect and we will have soldiers guarding her home,” a senior military official who declined to be identified said on Sunday.

But the easing on Yingluck will do little to dispel concern among her supporters that the military is intent on a crackdown for reasons beyond restoring order and ending antagonism between protesters backed by the establishment and the real power behind her government, her brother, former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The Fears of Inequality

by bl00

Written in response to the recent Santa Barbara shootings, mental illness, misogyny, and the debates and #YesAllWomen on Twitter. I focus here on fear, because the bodily harm, harassment, stalking, job insecurity, etc are already focused on at the hashtag. This is an important part of that conversation, and one that is missing, but is by no means meant to be the focus.

Years ago, a difference of opinion severely chilled a friendship with someone with whom I loved arguing. He saw the lack of easy acceptance from women as an emotional violence against men at an equal level to the physical violence enacted upon women by men. I agreed that it was problematic, and the two fed into each other, fueled by culture at large. I absolutely disagreed that it was of equal standing. Fear is a very real thing. Whether it is that someone will laugh at you or someone will kill you, the fear is real. The repercussions and reality lived are what are different.

Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them. – Margaret Atwood

On a lighter note, I really enjoy this short clip from Louis CK about saying yes to dates:

It is vital to make it clear that the objectification of, violence against, etc+preposition, women is absolutely unacceptable, and that continuance is untenable. It is possible, even necessary, in the same moment and breath, to have empathy for the fear experienced by being on the other side of the coin of these atrocities. How dehumanizing it must be to be expected to treat other human beings as objects. And most of the language we have around this phenomena is in Feminism, which is villainized during the propagation of these issues. How can one make use of tools closed off by the simple fact of where and when and with whom they grew up?

These issues are systemic, a positive (not “yay”, but “self-reinforcing”) feedback loop. (Not the only components in this feedback loop, clearly). Until we address the root cause for women being cautious of men – the high likelihood of violence being inflicted upon them – that caution is a legitimate response to a very real threat. We must make our way up Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs – not in series, but in parallel, with a focus on the more dire.

I am not blaming you, as a man, for things like what happened in Santa Barbara. I’m blaming what culture makes men think they have to be in order to be manly. What that means for your alienation because it is unobtainable. What it means for people like me, who happen to have a certain body, for you to strive towards that unobtainable standard through the objectification and devaluation of my self. You are not at fault for where we are as a culture. You are, however, responsible for getting us to a better place than where we are right now.

This is what I mean when I call out friends and strangers about discounting the fear felt by all parties in this mess. The fear is shared, but different. The fear is real. Do not discount the fear, or demean people for feeling it – because the fear is legitimate. Hold people accountable for their actions. Address the causes of their fear, in a way that holds all people as whole.

It is because I love you, that I fight to diminish your power over me. When we are equal, we can freely love each other as we are.

The Author Of 'The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy' Perfectly Captured The 'Rules' About How We React To Technology

by Jillian D'Onfro

hitchhikers guide to the galaxy

Today, Douglas Adams fans are celebrating "Towel Day," the commemorative holiday created after his death and inspired by his science-fiction series that began with "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy."

Adams fans will carry a towel with them all day, because the Hitchiker's Guide says that a towel is "the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have."

Adams died in 2001, but has the perfect, tongue-in-cheek quote about the way that people view technology that's still applicable today:

"I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technology":

1. Anything that is in the world when you're born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you're 15 and 35 is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're 35 is against the natural order of things.

(Hat-tip to investor Chris Dixon, who recently posted the quote on his blog.)

Video Rant, Then Deadly Rampage in California Town

by By IAN LOVETT and ADAM NAGOURNEY
Russian Sledges

' In the video, a young man sitting behind the wheel of what appears to be a black BMW describes himself as a sexually frustrated and angry young virgin about to go out on a mission of retribution.

'“I’ll take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you,” the young man says on the video. “You will finally see that I am in truth the superior one, that true alpha male.”'

A college student who documented his rage against women for rejecting him killed six people and wounded 13 others during a spasm of terror on Friday night.

Meet the Man Who Had His Heart Ripped Out in 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom'

Did you ever receive a script for Temple of Doom? No, I was never given a script. At all. The first day that I arrived on the set of Elstree, I was introduced to Steven and the rest of them, and they said, “Look, this is what it is: You’re a Thuggee and you’re going to be sacrificed, OK?” That set, with the Kali statue, was really incredible. And they said, “OK, you’re going to be in that cage. And they’re going to pull you towards it, and you’re going to die and you’re frightened. So: What would you say?” I said, “Well, I think I’d say ‘om namah shivaya.’ It’s a prayer type of thing that you say before you die; you pray to the god Shiva.” And then they checked that with Amrish Puri, and he said “Yeah, yeah, that’s right.”

By Andy Altman-Ohr

Urban Adamah privately slaughtered 15 chickens this week that had been scheduled to be killed as part of a public kosher slaughter workshop on May 4 that was canceled after community outcry.

The chickens, which were no longer laying eggs, were killed by a shochet (kosher slaughterer) in two sessions attended by staff members and Urban Adamah fellows, Adam Berman, executive director of the farm and education center on San Pablo Avenue, said in a statement. Eight chickens were slaughtered on May 14 and the remainder on May 20.(...)

A Look Inside Night Shift Brewing's Massive New Taproom | Boston Magazine

by russiansledges
Russian Sledges

<3 night shift

It’s only been two years since Michael Oxton, Michael O’Mara, and Robert Burns opened Night Shift Brewing out of a modest 3,000-square-foot warehouse space in Everett, but apparently, business has been good. On May 22, the trio of brewers will unveil a brand new facility, with almost triple the capacity as their original nanobrewery, and a 2,500-square-foot taproom that dwarfs their former space. Located on 87 Santilli Highway, less than a mile from their former digs, the sprawling 16,000-square-foot space (just behind Teddie Peanut Butter) has a new 20-barrel brewing system, aisles of wine, sherry, and bourbon barrels to increase production on Night Shift’s barrel-aged infatuation, two private dining areas, dozens of dedicated parking spaces, and even a pair of palatial restrooms, which Oxton is particularly excited about.

Google Glass Users Gang Up on East Village Restaurant by Posting Really Mean Reviews

by Hugh Merwin
Russian Sledges

#disruption

A feast for the senses, just not for the search engine.

Feast, which opened last March on Third Avenue with a large-format, nose-to-tail menu concept, has been plugging away with an exhaustive amount of greenmarket vegetables and various cuts of whole-roasted animals ever since. It's a small operation, but people tend to like the place. After management asked a Google Glass-wearing customer to remove the device one fateful brunch a few weeks back, however, the restaurant was hit with thirteen retaliatory one-star reviews posted in rapid succession, which of course now come up among the first results anytime someone looks up the business online.

Management tells EV Grieve it all started with a Glass-wearing customer who came in for brunch. After an earlier incident with a different patron, Feast had gotten "several comments about privacy" from customers, upon which the Glass-wearing customer consented to removing his glasses. When they approached the second Google Glass-wearing customer to remove her hardware before tucking into brunch, however, she said no, left the restaurant, then filed a short report on the situation on — of course — Google Plus, which quickly elicited several pointers on Glass etiquette in public spaces like dining rooms and private ones like restaurant bathrooms, as well as a bunch of angry comments. ("Of course I'll remove my Glass. And check please.")

This all went down less than two months after a Google Glass wearer who was attacked at a San Francisco bar boldly declared she was the victim of a "hate crime," so the Silcon Valley-esque equivalent of the old Charlton Heston-ism about how you can only get his gun when you pry it from his cold and dead hands was also in full effect, and it clearly spilled over to Feast's reviews. Here's some what the Glass contingent is saying about the restaurant they've never visited:

"They discriminate against people who are into new technology. Do not eat here."

"Ignorant bigots and hateful. Perhaps being illegally discriminate too. The food is irrelevant as the service is less than poor."

"Do not go here. They are very biased towards new technology. They allow patrons to use mobile phones to take photos or videos of other patrons. And they ask patrons to leave without fully understanding what a product does."

"Troglodytes with poor attitudes."

So, serious and somewhat hilarious stuff. But interestingly, the restaurant is clearly unhappy about the recent turn of events, but its proprietors seem to realize they may not have much of a choice on the matter, given the ineluctable nature of things like starred, online reviews, and, of course, Google itself. "It's not a policy set in stone, so it could very well change," a manager says.

Amazon Escalates Its Battle Against Publishers

by John Gruber
Russian Sledges

via overbey

David Streitfeld and Melissa Eddy, reporting for the NYT:

Amazon, under fire in much of the literary community for energetically discouraging customers from buying books from the publisher Hachette, has abruptly escalated the battle.

The retailer began refusing orders late Thursday for coming Hachette books, including J.K. Rowling’s new novel. The paperback edition of Brad Stone’s “The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon” — a book Amazon disliked so much it denounced it — is suddenly listed as “unavailable.”

In some cases, even the pages promoting the books have disappeared.

John Moltz: “Time for more ebook sanctions against Apple.”

Airport Dining Guides: Where to Eat at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)

by Rachel Leah Blumenthal

2kveus3243s.jpg

eater-airport-dining-guides.pngThe best meal of your entire life: it probably wasn't in an airport. However airports can make for good eating with a little help from your friends at Eater. Back again in time for spring travel, it's the Eater Boston guide to dining at Logan. Boston Logan has several solid restaurants within its walls, and nearby options abound for traveling locals or visitors on layover.

The breakdown: the closest restaurants outside of Logan are in East Boston, where you'll find a healthy mix of neighborhood eateries representing the cuisines of many nations. If you have time to hop in cab, Boston's historic, romantic, cannoli-laden North End is ten minutes away, as is the blazing hot Seaport District and Fort Point, where you can sample the flavor of the Boston dining scene of right this minute thanks to recent openings. Note: travel times are approximate and traffic can rear its ugly head at any time, so if you do leave Logan you might want to factor in a grace period for delays. Or for oysters.

Best Bets Inside Logan

2legalcbar.jpg1) Legal Sea Food (In Various Guises): You're never very far from a Legal in Logan, and the many permutations of the chain are all reliable choices for raw bar, lobster, fish & chips and so forth. The most interesting of the lot is the Legal Test Kitchen, where you'll find the occasional exotic flourish. [Legal Test Kitchen, Post-security, Terminal A, Gate 5; Legal C Bar, Pre-Security, Terminal B; Legal Sea Foods Cafe, Post-Security, Terminal B, Gate 10; Legal Sea Foods, Post-Security, Terminal C, Gate 12 and a brand new location in the new Terminal B Connector.]

stephanie%27s%20logan%20-fb.jpg2) Stephanie's: This brand new 120-seat sibling of Stephanie's on Newbury, Stephi's on Tremont, and Stephi's in Southie features a full bar [Terminal B Connector.]

22hrpoon.jpg3) Harpoon Tap Room: A satellite of Boston's Harpoon Brewery, the Tap Room serves standard pub fare including chowder, sandwiches, and fish & chips. And of course, there's beer—up to ten locally-brewed draughts including limited batches. [Post-security, Terminal A, Gate 22.]

23ciscopub.jpg4) Cisco Brew Pub: Like Harpoon, the Cisco Brew Pub is a safe choice for beer and pub food (burgers, lobster rolls, and the like). Originally just in Terminal B, it has spawned a second outpost in Terminal E. Cisco Brewers of Nantucket is renowned by craft beer geeks for brews like the Whale's Tale Pail Ale, and the pub also serves spirits by the affiliated Triple Eight Distillery and wines from Nantucket Vineyard. [Post-security, Terminal B, Gate 29 and post-security, Terminal E, Gate 1A.]

23bonfire.jpg5) Bonfire: Celeb chef Todd English got his start in Boston, and, for better or for worse, Bonfire has remained an outpost of his now sprawling empire (and with Olives done, it's one of his last Boston outposts.) Steaks with South American and European treatment are the main fare, along with tacos, tapas, and, what the heck, a Kobe beef hot dog. [Post-Security, Terminal B, Gate 36]

db-2012-12-21-at-10.02.27-AM.jpg6) Dine Boston Café. Every three months a different chef from a prominent local restaurant creates a new menu that pays homage to seasonal ingredients. Chefs have included Andy Husbands of Tremont 647, Jose Duarte of Taranta, Richard Garcia of 606 Congress, and Alberto Cabre of Casa B. [Pre-Security, Terminal E, Level 3]

ptbllyPicture-2.jpg7) Potbelly Sandwich Shop. This Chicago-based chain serves cookies, shakes, and salads in addition to the restaurant's best-known item: toasted sandwiches. Though it's a sandwich chain in an airport, it's a sandwich chain in an airport with a cult following. And at some hours, it may be your only option, open 5am until the last flight comes in. Potbelly has recently added three Boston-area locations—two downtown and one in Porter Square—and they've been fairly well received. [Post Security, Terminal C, Gate 11]

vv-2012-12-19-at-10.46.24-PM.jpg8) Vino Volo. A restaurant and wine shop with small plates and entrees organized by red and white. For instance: smoked salmon and crabmeat crostini (white). Two locations. [Post-Security, Terminal E, Gate 6 and post-security, Terminal A Satellite (Gates 13-22.)]

vg-2012-12-19-at-11.17.51-PM.jpg 9) Vineyard Grill.Burgers, sandwiches, steak, and shellfish are the focuses here, including fried clams and lobster rolls, and the full bar boasts 15 regional beers and flights. The beer kind. [Post-Security, Terminal E, Gate 1A]

beScreen-Shot-2012-12-19-at-10.54.40-PM.jpg10) Burrito Elito. Burritos, tacos, quesadillas, salads, and, because we live in a carbaphobic world now, "burrito bowls" (a burrito sans tortilla). But hey, after a long trip, a carnitas burrito or black bean taco can be your best friend. Before a long trip, maybe not so much... [Post-Security, Terminal E, Gate 1C]

2rincon.jpg4) Rincon Limeno: If you've got a little time and want a neighborhood dining immersion, this is it: the city's best spot for Peruvian dishes like ceviche, octopus salad, fish stew, and pisco sours. If you're traveling early, grab an arepa for breakfast. [East Boston, 409 Chelsea St, 7 minutes from the airport.]

KO-2012-12-19-at-11.28.39-PM.jpg5) KO Pies at the Shipyard: Two words: Meat pies. KO is a charismatic Australian restaurant right on the water with patio seating available in the warmer months. The non-meat pie fare is also good; try the Jonah crab salad with avocado. Also, there's lots of beer and wine from Down Under. [East Boston, 256 Marginal Street, Building 16, Boston Harbor Shipyard, 7 minutes from the airport.]

r-2013-05-22-at-11.10.20-PM.jpg6) Rino's Place: Perhaps Boston's most iconic Italian-American spot—and no, it's not in the North End. A neighborhood favorite for over 20 years, Rino's has been a lot more crowded ever since an appearance on the Food Network show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Have to wait for a table? Visit their bar across the street, Prima e Dopo, for appetizers, cocktails, and wine on tap. [East Boston, 258 Saratoga Street, 6 minutes from the airport.]

2neptn.jpg7) Neptune Oyster: Though the North End is known for Italian cuisine, one of its finest establishments is know for seafood. Neptune is small, popular, and doesn't accept reservations, but there's no better place to suck down bivalves within striking distance of Logan if you have time to wait in the inevitable line. Its lobster roll (choose cold with mayo or hot with butter) constantly earns "best lobster roll in the city" accolades. [North End, 63 Salem St, 10 minutes from the airport.]

t-2013-05-22-at-11.25.28-PM.jpg8) Tavern Road: A vibrant year-old restaurant that captures the evolving charisma of this part of town. Critically acclaimed charcuterie and serious cocktails. For a quick bite, grab lunch at its adjacent sibling, TR Street Foods. [Fort Point, 343 Congress Street, 8 minutes from the airport.]

d2013-05-22-at-11.20.35-PM.jpg9) Blue Dragon: A self-described Asian gastropub by celebrity chef Ming Tsai with a little something for everyone, from soy pickled deviled egg with taro nest to buttermilk tempura whole chicken. Note: reservations are not accepted, and long lines have been known to form during peak hours. [Fort Point, 324 A Street, 8 minutes from the airport.]

2tngrino.jpg10) Tangierino: Stepping into this Moroccan and Mediterranean-fusion restaurant transports you to a sultry fairytale land of ornate textures and luscious colors. Also, the food's good. Belly dancers perform nightly, and there's a hookah and cigar lounge downstairs. [Charlestown, 83 Main St, 10 minutes from the airport.]

The price point is lower than its swanky older sibling, but this is still quite suitable for a very nice meal out. Aside from the raw bar, there are shrimp sliders, lobster rolls, and the like, plus plenty of beer. [Fort Point, 383 Congress Street, 7 minutes from the airport.]

Extremely unbiased

Philosophy tends to be extremely unbiased and therefore doesn’t take any side in an argument, like how theology takes the side of reason or how science believes in scientology.

Simplicity's the watchword this week. For many of us who drink, our first forays into boozing came from simple two gunners: Jack and Coke, gin and tonic, vodka-cranberry, Scotch and soda. But there's no reason that simple drinks need to be super-simple in flavor. Today, I'll discuss a few 2-bottle drinks that deserve greater respect. These drinks are super-quick to make and offer a nice change of pace when it comes to flavor.
