Mayor Walsh Looking at Plan to Allow Boston Restaurants and Bars to Stay Open Until 3:30 AM

by Marc
Christopher.kantos

woah. I think 2 is good enough! Then again 4 years ago I'd probably be thrilled about this.

The new mayor of Boston is exploring the idea of extending the closing time of some of the restaurants and bars in the city.

CBS Local Boston is reporting that Marty Walsh told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 he is looking at a plan to allow "several" dining and drinking spots in "certain neighborhoods" to stay open as late as 3:30 AM, with alcohol being served until 2:30 AM. (Currently, most restaurants and bars can only stay open until 2:00 AM.) Walsh says that he wants to be "selective" about the proposed change in hours and will set up a task force to look into it, with the likely outcome being the setting up of a pilot project. If all goes as planned, it is possible that the later closing times for some restaurants and bars could be in place in time for the introduction of late-night MBTA service, which is expected to happen sometime this spring.

The mayor is going to officially introduce the plan this afternoon at a Boston Municipal Research Bureau meeting at the Seaport Hotel.

Bike seat/taxidermy sculptures

by Cory Doctorow

Canadian artist Clem Chen produced a pair of lovely grotesque sculptures by combining bicycle seats with taxidermy, presently on display at the Hot Art Wet City Gallery in Vancouver.

Appropriately titled, ‘bite it’ and ‘pink eye’ the customized fittings were made by carving out openings and inserting plastic-cast taxidermy molds into them. featuring a snarling mouth and creepy eye, the parts are held together with construction adhesive and 2-part epoxy glue, making the intimidating look durable, with additional sculpting done using epoxy putty. achieving an intimidatingly real-life look, details were painted in acrylic, while the body was given a matte-black spray finish.

The Internet may be producing an excess of penguin sweaters

by Maggie Koerth-Baker
The Guardian reports that the Phillips Island Penguin Foundation in Australia is asking volunteers to knit sweaters for penguins being rehabilitated after oil spills. Back in 2011, Dean wrote here about a similar request. The catch: That earlier plea for penguin sweaters (in fact, every earlier plea for penguin sweaters) has produced far, far more penguin sweaters than penguins actually need. For instance, in 2000, the Tasmanian Conservation Trust requested 100 sweaters and received 15,000. Yes, penguins wearing sweaters are cute, but it may be a good idea to contact the Phillips Island Penguin Foundation directly before you get started knitting.

Totto Ramen Is Coming to Allston

by Marc
Christopher.kantos

woah woah woah

It looks like the folks behind a pair of ramen shops in New York are opening another location, with this one being in the heart of one of Boston's busiest neighborhoods.

A well-known poster on the Chowhound site mentions that Totto Ramen appears to be opening on Brighton Avenue in Allston, taking over the space next to Tavern in the Square where YoYo City Frozen Yogurt had been. The poster mentions that a "finished" store sign is in place at the site, showing the same rooster logo as the one used for the two shops on W 52nd Street and W 51st Street in Manhattan. It is not known when the Allston location of Totto Ramen might open, and the Chowhound poster does say that a good amount of work appears to be needed for the space.

[March 7 update: A photo put up by the Chowhound poster confirms that this will indeed be a new location of NYC's Totto Ramen.]

Totto Ramen offers several options at its New York shops, including spicy ramen, cold ramen, and miso ramen, with toppings such as boiled eggs, pork, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and more available. The two ramen spots are part of a small group of restaurants in the city that include such places as Yakitori Totto and Aburiya Kinnosuke.

The address for the new outlet of Totto Ramen appears to be 169 Brighton Avenue, Allston, MA, 02134. The website for its existing shops in NYC can be found at http://tottoramen.com/

The Worf of Starfleet should have won all of the Oscars

Sure, it's not a real movie, and is technically just a Star Trek: The Next Generation-filled parody of The Wolf of Wall Street trailer, but my god it is awesome. After all, revenge is a dish best served with 10-15 quaaludes a day.

Minnesota Vikings No Longer Tied for Most Super Bowl Losses

by Adam Carlson

"Minnesota getting close to not being the worst at a lot of things"

If you missed the Super Bowl on Sunday, you missed one heck of a game.  This game was astounding not because of how close and competitive it was, but because a team with such a highly regarded offense struggled so badly to put points on the board.   The Seattle Seahawks ended up embarassing the […]

by Marc
A new Middle Eastern restaurant has just opened in one of the busiest sections of Somerville.

According to a poster on Chowhound (as well as another poster on the Davis Square LiveJournal site), Shawarma Place is now open on Elm Street in Davis Square, having taken over the former Wing Works space next to Domino's. A complete menu has not yet been seen for the new dining spot, though another poster on Chowhound says that it offers falafel as well as shawarma.

The address for this new Middle Eastern restaurant in Davis Square is: Shawarma Place, 201 Elm Street, Somerville, MA, 02144.

Who Would Win if Real Broncos Played Football Against Real Seahawks?

Most interesting analysis of the football game this weekend.

Who Would Win if Real Broncos Played Football Against Real Seahawks?

This Sunday, the Seahawks of Seattle and the Broncos of Denver meet in Super Bowl XLVIII. Not real seahawks or real broncos, just men in costumes with those animals painted on them. Nevertheless, a good and important question is raised: Who would win if it was actual broncos and actual seahawks?

Anthropocentrism

by Greg Ross

http://books.google.com/books?id=-cgOAAAAQAAJ

Large word squares are dramatically harder to make than small ones. To date the largest anyone has managed to find are composed of 9-letter words:

ACHALASIA word square

Finding a perfect 10×10 word square has been a central goal for wordplay fans for more than 100 years. The task was looking impossible when in 1972 Dmitri Borgmann found an unexpected resource in the African journal of David Livingstone, whose entry for Sept. 26, 1872, reads:

Through forest, along the side of a sedgy valley. Cross its head-water, which has rust of iron in it, then west and by south. The forest has very many tsetse. Zebras calling loudly, and Senegal long claw in our camp at dawn, with its cry, ‘O-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o.’

This is exactly what was needed. Given a pen, the yellow-bellied longclaw, Macronyx flavigaster, could have drawn for Livingstone a perfect 10×10 word square:

longclaw word square

We ought to consult other species more often. Any longclaw could have given us this contribution — indeed, this is the only word square the bird is capable of making!

Man dead from "atomic wedgie"

by David Pescovitz
Brad Davis, 33, of McCloud, Oklahoma was arrested for allegedly killing his stepfather, Denver Lee St. Clair with an "atomic wedgie." An argument led to a fistfight in which Davis said he knocked St. Clair out. Once St. Clair was unconscious, Davis gave him the "atomic wedgie" that seems to have killed him. According to NewsOK, "the cause of death has been determined to be from blunt force trauma to the head and asphyxiation."
