Comedy Central's Roast of Justin Bieber aired last night, and well…who knew a Justin Bieber roast might actually be funny? From brutal jokes by SNL's Pete Davidson ("I lost my dad on 9/11 and I always regretted growing up without a dad. Until I met your dad, Justin. Now I'm glad mine's dead") to undying honesty from Hannibal Buress ("I hate your music more than Bill Cosby hates my comedy") to special appearances by Ron Burgundy and even Dave Chappelle, the night was full of plenty of surprises at Bieber's expense. One of the most remarkable discoveries of economics is that under the right conditions competitive markets allocate production across firms in just that way that minimizes the total costs of production. (You can find a discussion of this remarkable property in Modern Principles. See also this MRU video.)

One of the necessary conditions for this result is that firms must face the same input and output prices. If one firm is subsidized and another taxed, for example, then resources will be misallocated and total costs will increase. In a pioneering paper, Klenow and Hsieh measure misallocation across firms in China, India and the United States and they find that micro misallocations can have large, macroeconomic effects. In particular, if capital and labor were allocated as well in China and India as they are in the United States then output in those countries would double.

We can get some intuition for the costs of resource misallocation by looking at water in California. As you may have noticed at the grocery store, almonds are in demand right now whether raw or in almond milk. Asian demand for almonds is also up. As a result, in the last 10 years almond production in California has doubled. That’s great, except for the fact that almond production uses a huge amount of water and water in CA is severely mispriced and thus misallocated.

In my previous post, I pointed out that agriculture uses 80% of the water in California but accounts for less than 2% of the economy. So how much water does almond production alone use? More water is used in almond production than is used by all the residents and businesses of San Francisco and Los Angeles combined. Here’s a chart from Mother Jones:

(Aside: Some of this water is naturally recycled so net use is likely somewhat lower but a lot of water in California is now being pumped from the aquifer and that water isn’t being replenished.)

At the same time as farmers are watering their almonds, San Diego is investing in an energy-intensive billion-dollar desalination plant which will produce water at a much higher cost than the price the farmer are paying.  That is a massive and costly misallocation of water.

In short, we are spending thousands of dollars worth of water to grow hundreds of dollars worth of almonds and that is truly nuts.

The next host of The Daily Show has been chosen. According to The New York Times, South African standup and current Daily Show contributor Trevor Noah has officially been named the next Daily Show host and will take over for Jon Stewart when he leaves sometime this year. "I’m thrilled for the show and for Trevor," Stewart said in a statement. "He’s a tremendous comic and talent that we’ve loved working with." Noah made his Daily Show debut in November and has appeared on the show three times. "We talked to women. We talked to men. We found in Trevor the best person for the job," Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless said on the decision. "You don’t hope to find the next Jon Stewart – there is no next Jon Stewart. So, our goal was to find someone who brings something really exciting and new and different." Check out Noah's very first Daily Show appearance below:

"If you’re disturbed by white-collar crime, but not quite as disturbed as you are by gay sex, then congratulations: You might possess just the right combo of social conscience and unexamined homophobia needed to fully enjoy Get Hard." That's the opening line from Variety's review of Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart's new buddy comedy, and it sums up much of the critical backlash since the film premiered at SXSW. Ferrell and Hart have responded to these accusations to varying degrees of success this week, but the most interesting coverage comes from HitFix's Louis Virtel, who confronted the guys about the issue head-on:

“You're both very smart, funny people. During the filming of the movie, between the scene where you [Hart] kind of do a mockingly effeminate voice and you [Ferrell] gag at the sight of a dick as if it's the worst thing that could happen to a straight guy — a gay situation — did you think this is mildly-mean spirited, or at the very least, a little bit dated?"

In response, Hart insists that "funny is funny" and Ferrell says the film is about a "societal norm" and earned a standing ovation at SXSW (which is true, but it happened before the film screened, so there's that). Get Hard premieres in theaters this Friday, so only time will tell whether or not viewers agree with the current critical backlash. To be fair, not all critics think Get Hard is an "absolutely horrible, amateurishly assembled comedy that is more offensive than just about anything we've seen lately" — some say that it's "just disappointing," "unimaginative," and "dumb and dated." Yikes.

I loved every opinionated moment of this interview with Fran Lebowitz about fashion. Where do I even start? Some choice bits:

I have to say that one of the biggest changes in my lifetime, is the phenomenon of men wearing shorts. Men never wore shorts when I was young. There are few things I would rather see less, to tell you the truth. I'd just as soon see someone coming toward me with a hand grenade. This is one of the worst changes, by far. It's disgusting. To have to sit next to grown men on the subway in the summer, and they're wearing shorts? It's repulsive. They look ridiculous, like children, and I can't take them seriously.

Now people need special costumes to ride bicycles. I mean, a helmet, what, are you an astronaut??

Of course, more people should wear overcoats than those damned down jackets. Please. Are you skiing, or are you walking across the street? If you're not an arctic explorer, dress like a human being.

I, myself, am deeply superficial.

Feeling good about an outfit is the point at which that outfit finally becomes good.

Will Radford and Mathias Gallé have a new and interesting paper on this topic, here is one excerpt:

Law and corporate professions had around 15% of female representation…the medical domain (doctors) had a female probability of 0.23…Religion does not score at the bottom with regards to female presentation (although very low with 0.08). From the professions we selected, Engineering was the lowest (0.05). The highest scoring profession was IT (0.52), which is partly due to the fact that many computer voices were female (computer had 460 female occurrences, versus 247 male ones; and enterprise computer from “Star Trek” was almost exclusively female)

By the way, the number of female writers and directors (in their IMDB database) was at a six year low in 2014.

If you look at most frequent roles for gender, women are assigned hostess, girl, woman, waitress, and mother.  For men, the list swings toward narrator, announcer, doctor, detective, bartender, soldier, and police officer.

In 1980-200, the top “newly popular” role (for both sexes) was “additional voices.”  For the time period 2000-present it was “zombie,” next was “housemate.”

I took an Uber from the Oakland airport when I arrived since I’d been told that’s how the locals did it. I was a little unsettled – my editor had agreed to let me come out here, but as of yet, I still didn’t know what I was going to write about. As we made our way up MLK Boulevard--named for the famed civil rights leader--I looked out the window and noticed the mad variety of miraculous color streaming by my window. “Pardon me,” I said to my driver, a dapper gentleman in his mid 60s. “What are those – those flashes of yellow, and purple… and that absolutely spectacular vermillion?”

The fellow waited until we stopped at a light, then regarded me warily in the rearview mirror. “Those are flowers,” he said.

In a low, driver’s baritone he began to speculate as to what kind, but I was really too astonished to listen. Flowers! In March? That seemed very unlikely.

Arriving at my charming rented Berkeley bungalow I found I was oddly warm in my long underwear, Smartwool socks and Pendleton shirt and found myself changing into some lighter clothing. I heard some chickens clucking and was struck dumb when I looked out the window and saw them pecking through grass on the other side of a bamboo fence on the neighbor’s lawn. Grass? At this time of year? And those pink things with the petals – was I supposed to understand those were also flowers?

This tweet is from ~1.5 years ago and I feel like since then, the awkward personification of brands and the backlash against it have both significantly increased. Have you noticed the way you joke about the subject change over time?

I know that people have been ragging on brands forever on there. I used to do it a lot. Like reply to a Red Lobster tweet about clams with a story about my son getting hit by a car or something. Now I mostly just block them and then light a candle and listen to cello music. I am very tired

Not really. I guess I feel more earnest. Less scared to say things that might make me look actually stupid instead of fun, comedy persona stupid. Oh also I tweet "The World is a Vampire" all the time now.

This is cheating and I'm bragging and it doesn't really count for your question, but once a hero of mine Adam McKay tweeted a link to an ONN piece I pitched and wrote with just the word "hilarious," and anybody could have just killed me right at that moment and I wish they had.

I haven't gotten yelled at by anyone who matters or anything. Oh! The singer from Sixpence None the Richer followed me and I was like, "What's up lady you are burned into my early-pubescent psyche." (Leigh Nash. She's legit great).

15 Unfortunate Cat Jump Fails

It's only been a week since Tina Fey and Robert Carlock's new show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt premiered on Netflix, but the internet is already full of reviews and essays ranging from adoration to outrage. Tituss Burgess, who costars in the series with Ellie Kemper, fielded some questions during a conference call yesterday, and here's what he had to say when I asked him what it's like to star in a binge-able Netflix series that gets instant feedback and dissection from critics:

It's so strange to have five months' worth of work be swallowed in one sitting, so that's a new concept I kind of can't wrap my head around. As far as the dissecting, I think because of Tina's involvement people hold her on such a high pedestal — and rightfully so. She's so intelligent about her wit that I think it probably invites discussion. Good or bad, it invites discussion, and that's the point and that's what she wants. And you know, if people aren't talking about you, you're not doing your job.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt certainly has some kinks to work out, but because it's a Tina Fey show, it's not surprising there's been such an overload of thinkpieces so early on in its run. It's not without its own set of flaws (which is common for most comedy series' debut seasons), but it also succeeds in some pretty exciting ways: For me, it was waiting to see whether a smart, straight white male would show up and take over the story — or at least shift Kimmy's goal from "making it in the big city" to "finding true love." Thankfully, that character never shows up, and that's a freedom rarely afforded to women on sitcoms these days. Hopefully as Unbreakable gets a chance to develop it'll start to win back the critics who panned it this week, but in any case, Burgess is right: Any press is good press, and people are definitely talking.
