Written in the Bones. New comic, written by Christopher M. Jones & illustrated by Carey Pietsch.

I’m hoping to have printed copies of this at MOCCA, ABPCC, and TCAF this spring, and SPX in the fall! More info to come.

Me and Carey worked really hard on this comic; if you got something from it I’d love for you to reblog it, and maybe even buy a copy from Carey when she’s in town or even if she’s not. Thanks so much for reading.

Funny Pic Dump (6.16.17)

by Derek
ThePrettiestOne

I remember one of my friends telling me about the time she was sitting on the toilet at her friend's house, when suddenly, a green, scaley tail dropped down from above and uncurled in front of her face. She hadn't realized that her friend had a huge iguana that liked to sit on the shelf over the toilet because the bathroom was often nice and humid.

Someone Is Trying to Discredit the Story of Peter Thiel’s Interest in Young Blood

by J.K. Trotter on Gizmodo, shared by Emma Carmichael to Jezebel
ThePrettiestOne

Wow, rich asshole has damaging story printed about him, and then "people" start claiming the story isn't true. What COULD be happening, here?

Also, in my head-canon, Elon Musk's entire space program is entirely motivated by his desire to convince Thiel to go start a "libertarian paradise" on Mars.

When Inc. magazine’s Jeff Bercovici reported last August that billionaire Trump-supporter Peter Thiel had repeatedly expressed interest in the idea of harvesting the blood of young people to maintain his own youth, it left an indelible mark on Thiel’s public persona, as captured by headlines like “Peter Thiel Wants to…

Trans women are being assaulted by guards and male detainees while in ICE detention

by rss@dailykos.com (Gabe Ortiz)
ThePrettiestOne

Well, I'm shocked.

Transgender immigrant women are being sexually and physically assaulted by male detainees and guards while in ICE custody, an unconscionable fact that stands to worsen now that the federal government’s only dedicated detention facility for gay, bisexual, and trans detainees has shut down. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, an estimated 5,000 trans people are currently jailed, with an average of 65 trans immigrant women detained by ICE daily. Despite the smaller numbers, they are extremely vulnerable to physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and humiliation at the hands of staff and the general population.

“Anyone locked up in America's prisons and jails risks facing deplorable conditions,” states Vice, “but for trans people, the experience is often defined by daily brutalities, including long stretches in solitary, a denial of gender-affirming healthcare, and physical and sexual violence”:

In March 2016, Human Rights Watch (HRW) published findings of an extensive investigation into abuses against trans women in US immigration detention, based on interviews with 28 former detainees. The report details numerous instances in which transgender women had been raped or sexually assaulted while in immigration detention, either by detainees or guards, as well as several accounts in which ICE staff refused to adequately respond to reported assaults.

Oregonians No Longer Have to Identify as Male or Female on Driver’s Licenses

Oregon is adding “X” to the “M” and “F” gender boxes on its driver’s licenses, becoming the first state to recognize intersex, genderfluid, and agender people on IDs, NBC reports. The option will be added as of July 3rd. California is considering a similar bill.

Today's Trump tweet storm is extra loony ... and he admits 'I am being investigated'

by rss@dailykos.com (Mark Sumner)
ThePrettiestOne

"After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my "collusion with the Russians," nobody has been able to show any proof. Sad"
Especially since he's been deliberately leaving proof out where everyone can see it!

You can’t really say that Donald Trump has gone off the rails. Trump was born without rails. Never, not in his entire life, has the idea of “that doesn’t make sense” flashed a warning light inside the orange dome. But even considering that Trump’s been traveling cross-country for a long time, this morning’s set of tweets are still remarkable examples of Trump’s twisted “logic.”

There’s the initial effort to denigrate the investigation.

After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my "collusion with the Russians," nobody has been able to show any proof. Sad!

Then a swing at the media.

The Fake News Media hates when I use what has turned out to be my very powerful Social Media - over 100 million people! I can go around them.

Wait. 100 million? Sure. Plus or minus 68 million.

Trump

And that’s not the craziest thing Trump tweeted this morning. Not by a long shot.

Ignorance of the law is an excuse—for Trump and Republicans

by rss@dailykos.com (Mark Sumner)
ThePrettiestOne

You know, I'd rather not be known for living in a country whose president is too stupid to commit treason.

As previewed by Paul Ryan, the GOP defense of Donald Trump is shifting to a “he’s not a criminal, he’s just too ignorant to know better.”

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) put forth an excuse for President Trump’s efforts to influence the FBI’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump team and Russia’s efforts to manipulate America’s presidential election. Ryan did not dispute the factual content of former FBI Director James Comey’s testimony under oath before the Senate Intelligence Committee. Rather, he claimed that Trump was too new to politics to understand that what he was doing was wrong.

Sure. Okay. People outside of politics can’t be expected to know all those fancy rules like not lying and that it’s wrong to lean on underlings.

Now Ryan is getting some support. It’s not that Trump is really obstructing justice. It’s just that he’s such a rube that it looks like he’s obstructing justice.

Republican Rep. David Schweikert said in a radio interview Thursday that President Donald Trump might lack the language discipline to avoid giving the appearance of interfering in an investigation.

Schweikert said Trump may not have learned the discipline because he's not from the "political class."

The awful thing is that Ryan and Schweikert are probably right—in his business life, Trump pressured employees and summarily fired people all the time. It’s less an argument that Trump is ignorant, and more a case that he’s always been a privileged jackass. But the truth is that Trump knew it was wrong.

Ladies, I Know We're All Wonder Woman, But Don't Put Swords Down Your Dresses

by Beth Elderkin

YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO.
Sadly, I don't actually own a sword.

One of the coolest visuals in Wonder Woman was when Diana went undercover at a German party to take down General Erich Ludendorff, concealing her Godkiller sword down the back of her dress. It was both sexy and badass, and it’s inspired some women to slide blades down their own ballgowns. Sure, it looks awesome. But…

A New Study Shows Gay Fathers Are Better Than Straight Dads in One Very Important Way

A New Study Shows Gay Fathers Are Better Than Straight Dads in One Very Important Way:

lgbtlovecomesfirst:

“A 2008 study of 588 LGBT parents conducted by the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN) found that gay dads were more likely than heterosexual dads to be involved in school-based activities like being a classroom parent, teacher’s assistant, book reader, PTA member, event organizer or school board member.

“Gay dads prefer schools and communities that are safe and inclusive,” Leland said. “They want [anti-gay] judges … and lawmakers bent on barring them from fatherhood to see that two-dad families are for the most part just like any other family.”

Three Thoughts on Emotional Labour

Three Thoughts on Emotional Labour:

violent-darts:

My only problem with this article is that it, like a lot of this discussion, acts like “emotional labour” is an objective thing, like mass, which can be distributed in an objective and obvious-to-all way.

As opposed to what it is, which is massively different between people.

For some people, making a phone-call to someone is an act that involves (among other things) a huge shift emotional labour. For others, it’s trivial and they literally can’t imagine why it could be something considered difficult.

In terms of emotional labour, it is actually harder for me, sometimes, to remember what TV show someone likes and suggest that we watch it together, than it is to listen with sympathy and reassurance and so on to the huge horrible story of their brutal past year. For most people, this would be the opposite way around. For most people, “suggest that you watch a favourite show together” is the kind of suggestion people make as a low “emotional labour” option for when your friend is sad or tired or ill.

For me, it’s not. It’s the opposite.

Conversely, for me the emotional labour involved in quieting a crying or tantruming child is, if not negligible, at least pretty low. No, it actually is - this is something that is very, very easy for me. For rather a LOT of people, this is exactly the kind of thing that comes up in huge relationship arguments: I deal with the kids, I deal with their crying, I deal with the mess, I deal with all of this! Because for them it’s stressful. For them the emotional work of handling a child’s tantrum is huge. For me it isn’t.

It is much easier for me to deal with a three-year-old who is screaming her head off than it is for me to sometimes sit down and watch a television show with someone, and especially for me to be the one initiating that.

This is because emotional labour isn’t objective. It can’t be objective: it’s based on emotional landscapes. So.

People don’t want to talk about this, of course, because it makes shit complicated. It means when the question is is it reciprocal? you have to work with the exchange rate inherent to that interaction, and it presents us with sticky situations where in fact two people may be making huge payments into a situation while getting maybe half of that back, with there being no way - and definitely no simple way - to even up the load.

The emotional labour of someone with anxiety trying to manage a social calendar and someone without anxiety trying to manage a social calendar is wildly different. This is a kind of a bitch, because it means you have to assess everything on its own merits as well as on overall merits and there aren’t easy answers.

Nobody wants to talk about that.

Little House Cat Challenges Big Lion, Proves That Size Doesn’t Matter

by Elizabeth
ThePrettiestOne

I'm convinced that most cats, dogs, and men don't actually have the ability to gauge the difference in size between themselves, and anything they see. If they are in a position to be able to encompass the whole things itheir vision, they assume that it's the same size as them, and challenge it.

Derek Krahn, a director for a non-profit big cat sanctuary he runs in Texas, recently had a priceless reaction when his domestic kitty Baggy challenged a lion named Noey. Of course, the two felines, one large and one small, were separated by a wire fence, but the tiny fellow still proved that if you’re brave and courageous, size doesn’t count.

The video went viral, partly due to Krahn’s reaction. “Baggy,” her owner called out. “You will lose!”

But Baggy wasn’t listening, and just went for it. So, if you need to muster up some courage in your life, just come back to this video. Besides, both kitties have the DNA of the big cats, so why can’t a domesticated cat have the heart of a lion?

Don’t worry, though, because the war between the two cats is over. “Baggy the housemeow has always been a tough little cookie, but I never thought she was this degree of crazy,” commented the kitty’s owner. “All is well, everything settled, and her and Noey (the lion) are back on speaking terms.”

UPS Driver Is Caught Taking Selfies With Dogs

by Dominyka Jurkštaitė
ThePrettiestOne

I, too, would like a job that involves driving from dog to dog.

Meet Doniel Kidd, a UPS driver who was recently caught on a hidden camera laying on the ground and taking a selfie with three dogs who came to say ‘hello’. They belong to a customer named Staci Burns from Louisiana. “I’m an animal lover,” Kidd told The Dodo, explaining the video. “If I can pet a dog, and make him feel good, I will.”

The woman behind the camera, who is a long-time client of Kidd says: “He is one of the kindest, most good-hearted (especially towards animals) men I know,” says Burns. And man does the delivery guy know how to take a good dog selfie!

John Danforth, another one of Kidd’s clients, says the love the UPS guy feels for canines is totally mutual. “My dogs know the sound of his truck… When he comes to my place, they perk up and go running towards the road to greet him and bark!”.

Okay, so Kidd is aware that petting dogs is not necessarily written in his contract, but he explains how being on friendly terms with neighborhood dogs means he can do his job better: “There are two dogs I’ve known since they were puppies: Willie and Millie. They don’t allow FedEx to come around. They don’t allow anyone to deliver to the house but me.” That’s a real dog-whisperer!

United Airlines Flight Grounded After Passengers Watched Jet Fuel Pour Out of Wing

by Mary Beth Quirk
ThePrettiestOne

Now, I'm no expert, but...

Being a passenger on a plane generally requires a good deal of faith in the laws of physics and in the experts who build and operate these jets. But every once in a while, a lay person will see something — like, say, jet fuel leaking out of the wing and onto the tarmac — and that faith can be shaken.

A couple sitting aboard United Airlines flight scheduled to take off Tuesday from Newark Liberty International Airport and fly to Venice, Italy, noticed something a bit odd as they gazed out the window, reports The New York Post: Fuel, gushing from the plane’s wing.

“It was huge — it looked like a fire hose,” said the woman, a newlywed on her way to her honeymoon with her husband, who was already nervous for her first flight abroad.

He ran to let the crew know that something wasn’t right, but said they “yelled” at him and told him to sit down, saying everything was normal.

That is, until staff looked out the window and saw what was going on. The pilot turned the engine off and fire trucks rushed to the plane, the passenger said, and United grounded the flight.

The flight attendant who’d dismissed her husband then thanked him, she says, and the couple was invited to the cockpit for a glass of bubbly, and to show the pilots their footage of the leaky plane — video which she says appeared to rattle them.

At that point, she says United employees told the couple they’d take care of them, and asked them to “go easy” on the airline, you know, if they happened to mention this whole thing on social media.

But the couple claims the rest of their experience was the airline didn’t get any better from there: The woman says she was forced to tears in her struggle to get them another flight to Italy so they wouldn’t miss their cruise.

Once they had booked a flight for Wednesday night on Delta, the airline gave them a food voucher but didn’t provide lodging, so they slept on the floor of baggage claim until 7:30 in the morning, when another passenger with a hotel voucher offered them the room, in thanks for what they’d done by raising the alarm about the leaking plane.

Someone else offered them a ride in a limo to JFK for their next flight, and others kept thanking the couple, the woman says. But they’re surprised United didn’t try harder to make sure everything was okay, especially in light of the airline’s recent public relations problems.

“I will never fly United again,” the woman told the Post.

United didn’t address the couple’s version of the story.

“While taxiing to the runway yesterday evening, United flight 170 traveling from Newark to Venice, Italy returned to the gate due to a fuel leak, and was later cancelled,” the airline said in a statement to the Post, adding that employees helped provide customers with hotel accommodations and worked with them to rebook flights to Italy. “We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”
