Busójárás

Festival of Perpetual Life and Rebirth

During February in the small Hungarian town of Mohács, the townspeople dress as horned monsters, wander the town swilling spiced wine and homemade pálinka, and make as much noise as humanly possible.
Lasting for approximately one week, and ending the day before Ash Wednesday, Busójárás is a celebration and affirmation of life for the Šokci, the ethnic Croatian minority population living in Mohács. During the penultimate night of the festival, a man made of straw is carried by cart into the center of town and then burned in a bonfire while the townspeople hold hands and dance the kolo in a circle around the blaze.
Busójárás has much in common with other carnival festivals that celebrate the end of winter. However, according to the official story, the roots of the festival date back to the Battle of Mohács in 1526. As legend has it, the villagers dressed up as fearsome monsters and drove away the invading Turkish army.
The male busos wear a traditional sheepskin cloak, women’s wool stockings under men’s pants, and a carved monster mask. As master buso mask-maker Engelbert Antal believes, the buso’s mask isn’t to simply change his outer appearance—instead, it is to alter the person behind the mask. As such, each mask is crafted specifically for each buso. The woolen stockings are part of a carnival pagan tradition embracing the duality of male and female. Although there are now a few female busos, women who participate in the festival typically dress up in clothing reminiscent of female Ottoman Turks. During Carnival time, all rules are ignored and everything is permitted, and some claim that the excesses of the celebration were key to the small Šokci population’s survival in Mohács, as no one could question the parentage of children conceived during Busójárás.
During the festival there are numerous traditional music performances, costumed folk dancing, buso parades, and in between scheduled events, general mayhem. Like every Carnival celebration, alcohol is consumed in abundance, and the busos are often very, very drunk. Visitors to Busójárás should be warned that it’s nearly impossible to witness the carnival without somehow being dragged into it. It's common for adult spectators to have flour thrown on them, be offered drinks from large flasks of spiced wine, and to be groped and/or dry-humped (albeit for comic effect) by the busos.
Admission to the festival is free, although it’s best to arrange a place to stay ahead of time. Although it is possible to stay in Mohács itself, many visitors to the festival prefer to stay in one of the pesions available to rent in the nearby wine region of Villány.

Dois comentários iniciais sobre o post: salvo uma ou duas alterações finais, o texto foi revisado pela Fabiana Zardo. Acho um absurdo sem tamanho isso ainda ser assunto em 2012, mas é.

 

Tudo na vida é questão de opção. Todos os dias temos que decidir o que vestir, o que comer, quando escovar os dentes. Quem trabalha em casa ainda tem que decidir quando é hora de trabalhar e quando é hora de cuidar dos afazeres domésticos, da  família, dos cachorros… É uma liberdade, claro, mas que exige muita responsabilidade.

O problema é que só entende quem vive isso. Quem está de fora pensa que você está o dia inteiro na internet, postando no Facebook ou vendo os vídeos mais legais no Youtube. Por isso, se sentem no direito de pedir aquele favorzinho porque você está em casa, mesmo. Para quem é de fora, nem dói dizer não. Mas quando quem age assim é a mãe, o pai ou o marido, a coisa fica mais difícil. Sim, meninos, este é um texto dirigido às mulheres, desculpem. Vocês já são cheios de privilégios. Provo:

Uma mulher trabalha em casa, o marido fora, e ela resolve matricular o filho na escolinha, para poder trabalhar com tranquilidade. Pensem na reação do marido, da família e da sociedade, nesta ordem. Talvez o marido entenda e apoie. Talvez a família dela também. A dele já vai dizer que ela é uma preguiçosa desnaturada que nem devia ter parido, provavelmente. Melhor nem saber o que pensam os de fora.

Um homem trabalha em casa, a mulher fora, e ele decide matricular o filho pequeno na escolinha, para trabalhar com tranquilidade. Alguém vai ver alguma coisa errada nisso? Duvido. Talvez achem errado o fato de ela não largar o serviço fora para cuidar do filho,  isso sim. Afinal, a “obrigação” é da mãe. Do mesmo modo, a “obrigação” de manter a casa em ordem, a comida feita e as roupas passadas é da mulher, principalmente se ela trabalha em casa. Se ela não tem tempo para isso, que mude de serviço. Sim, as pessoas pensam assim, e eu sei porque já ouvi exatamente essas palavras. Dói.

Dói alguém da família dizer isso. Dói quando a sociedade te transforma na única responsável por toda a infinidade de coisas que precisam ser feitas dentro de casa e em relação aos filhos. Mesmo entre as mulheres cujo marido faz coisas em casa, repare no discurso. Elas sempre dizem “meu marido me ajuda muito em casa”. Eu acredito que só é possível ajudar naquilo que não é obrigação minha. Ajudar é favor. E eu me recuso a achar que passar a própria camisa seja um favor que meu marido me faz. Eu me recuso a achar que, se eu passei uma hora e meia fazendo comida, ele lavar a louça é um favor. NÃO É UM FAVOR. Ele trabalha e ele estuda, mas eu também trabalho e muito. O trabalho dele é importante e eu respeito com todo o meu coração. Sou grata por cada madrugada em que ele deixa de dormir para ganhar dinheiro e termos uma vida melhor no futuro. Tenho orgulho de ele estar estudando. Gosto que ele se sinta da mesma forma em relação a mim, e nosso relacionamento nem teria chegado até aqui se ele pensasse diferente.

Então, aqui em casa, tarefa doméstica é obrigação daquele que tem tempo, e espero que isso continue assim quando tivermos filhos. Os filhos serão nossos, não só meus. Não podem ser responsabilidade só minha. Eu me recuso a aceitar a responsabilidade sozinha. Se fosse assim, eu não teria esperado todo esse tempo para encontrar o homem que eu acredito que vai ser um bom pai. Poderia até mesmo ter feito uma inseminação artificial. Porém, eu escolhi ter filhos com alguém que aceite dividir a responsabilidade comigo, não “ajudar” na criação dos filhos. Não é ajuda, é compromisso.

Levar a vida assim não é fácil, porque gera conflito. Já deixei minha mãe chateada várias vezes porque ela queria bater papo no telefone ou pela internet e eu tinha que trabalhar. Faz parte e nós duas aprendemos a lidar com isso. Hoje, ela se revolta mais com quem me atrapalha do que eu mesma. Com o Paulo também foi difícil, como é todo relacionamento, e ainda é, porque do lugar de onde viemos, certas coisas são obrigação da mulher. Com o tempo, a gente vai se ajustando e se entendendo. Contudo, é preciso ser firme. É preciso estabelecer seus limites e não ultrapassá-los sem necessidade. É preciso ter coragem de enfrentar caras feias e o desapontamento de quem acha que você não cuida direito nem do marido e nem do filho, mas, querem saber? É muito mais necessário ser feliz. Estamos neste mundo para isso, afinal, e não para deixar o chão sem manchas e os armários sem marcas de dedos e tudo na mais perfeita ordem. Estamos no mundo para aproveitar a companhia do marido, dos filhos e dos amigos, e isso só é possível se os dois dividirem todas as responsabilidades. Não dá para cuidar de tudo, a vida é muito curta. Por isso, entre lavar a louça e ir passear com o Paulo, sempre: ir passear com o Paulo. A louça, lavamos juntos depois, se for o caso, ou fica lá até um de nós ter tempo. Quanto ao que os outros pensam? Não me importo, estou ocupada demais vivendo minha vida exatamente do jeito que eu quero e que me faz feliz.

When Gato Piercer down in Bogota, Colombia first did this heavy “FUCK YOU” graffiti skin peeling, I had some doubt about how it would heal — and I’m told he got a lot of the inter-studio crap that’s way too common in this industry, where people accuse each other of being scratcher-monsters and fighting when they really should be working together since we’re all on the same team, even when we’re competing for the same customer dollars. Back to the point, I’m very happy to be able to post an update of this scar two months later and show you that the healing has been remarkably even, and more importantly, kept its detail. My worry was that the interior negative space might not survive, so I was pleased to see everything turned out great.

London-based artist Angela Palmer creates somewhat haunting imagery by taking MRI/CT scans and engraving each slice onto sheets of glass.  This creates a carefully layered topography of the human form that comes off as a quick frantic sketch.

In what is a very slow news day we have this gem of a story: The Memphis Police Department pulled over a Ford pickup truck with the words “Meth Lab” written on the rear window for driving with antique license plates. I do not think Walter White would approve.

Fun fact of the day: There is such a thing as antique license plates! But really, unbeknownst to me, these license plates do exist and allow you to drive on weekends and special occasions (no word on what constitutes a special occasion, but it turns out making meth is not one).

I digress. Upon making the stop the officer discovered that the 43-year-old driver had his license suspended and was on probation for manufacturing meth. If you are on probation for manufacturing meth, it is probably not a very good idea to write “Meth Lab” on the back of your old pickup truck. After further investigation, the police found two “Shake N Bake” bottles which are commonly used in mobile meth labs.

If you are not hip to the meth trade, the “Shake N Bake” method of cooking meth is an extremely cheap and dangerous way to make the drug that has been picking up steam in poor areas throughout the United States. So there you have it America—keep the bumper stickers to promoting causes that no one gives a shit about.

In what has to be one of the longest, most laborious GIFs I've ever come across, Pixel Masher has recreated Raiders of the Lost Ark in a 897-frame image file. Even better, it's now modeled as a 16-bit adventure game. It's like the LucasArts Indiana Jones game we never got.

I blew up the image from its original format for your viewing pleasure. It's a tragedy that I've seen others do the same, while throwing on gross filters. Use Nearest Neighbor, people. ALWAYS!
