Seemingly normal figure drawings and portraits are dissected away by Romanian artist, Claudiu Candea. His figure drawings are almost photographic, capturing intimate moments made deeper by exposing the anatomy below the surface.

Guess who I’m contacting for the next OBJECTIFY THIS: Female Anatomy Dissected and Displayed gallery show….

Short Film: A Zombie-Bitten Father Struggles to Save His Infant Daughter

by John Farrier

(Video Link)

In a mere 7 minutes, Cargo tells the bittersweet story of a father's love and sacrifice. Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke's sad but beautiful short film was a film festival finalist--a well-deserved accolade.

New trailer for Two Brothers is Game Boy evolved

by Tony Ponce

Two Brothers. This, my friends, is the kind of game I want to start seeing more of. Time to give the 2D retro throwback a swift kick in the nuts and really take the style to its extremes. Don't just emulate the old-school look and feel! Use the power of modern technology to push boundaries!

Two Brothers by AckkStudios is scheduled for release this summer on XBLA, Wii U eShop, PC, Mac, and Linux. To further tantalize the taste receptors, a new trailer has appeared, featuring plenty of delicious Link's Awakening / Secret of Mana exploration and combat, gradually encroaching splashes of color à la Pleasantville, and crazy detailed pixel art that reminds me of photographs captured using the Game Boy Camera.

This is a good thing.

Band To Watch: A Pregnant Light

by Stereogum

Sometime in the second half of 2011, I took a chance and ordered a number of cassettes, sound-unheard, from a new cassette-only record label that had made an announcement on a black-metal message board saying they were ready to start shipping their first batch of releases. It wasn’t a huge risk: Priced at five or six bucks apiece, it seemed like a good way to hear some new music and support underground metal. I picked up tapes (each pressed in a limited edition of 100 copies) from Aksumite, SADOS, Obliti Devoravit, and A Pregnant Light. They were new bands, with strange names, putting out their debut releases on Colloquial Sound Recordings, a label that — I couldn’t have known at the time — would become an almost guaranteed source of genre-bending, incredible extreme music.

Grande perda.

Shannon

I have started and stopped this update several times because I honestly don’t know what to say and nothing I could say would be adequate.  It is with sadness and regret that I have to announce that Shannon has passed away.  We will post something more at a later date but right now we are all still reeling and grieving.  We ask that you please respect Rachel and her daughter’s privacy at this time as well as the rest of Shannon’s family and friends.  Thank you for understanding and being such a wonderful and supportive community.

You can visit Shannon’s personal blog here.

Why I Stopped Pirating and Started Paying for Media

by Thorin Klosowski
Click here to read Why I Stopped Pirating and Started Paying for Media Let's be honest for second: most of us have illegally downloaded something in our lives. Maybe it was a song, some software, a game, or a movie. For a period I pirated everything I could. As technology pushed forward, it became less necessary, and now I don't even bother. Here's why. THE 10 BEST ALBUMS OF 2012

by simon

10. Death Grips – No Love Deep Web

“No Love Deep Web” is the biggest fuck you to a major record label in ages. Who even cares about the music? Turns out it’s brilliant actually.

9. Cult Of Youth – Love Will Prevail

Please. Play this album at my funeral feast while someone standing in the corner is reading out loud some Hemingway. No holds barred.

8. Hirsute Pursuit – Tighten That Muscle Ring

Gay industrial groove bondage anyone? This album is the window you can’t open in a cum-soaked backroom somewhere in Siam, an endless source of sweet frustration.

7. The Secret – Agnus Dei

These Italians play black metal the way their forefathers directed western: like a wild bunch of decadent sexy punk motherfuckers.

6. SpaceGhostPurrp – The Chronicles Of SpaceGhostPurrp

The perfect music for sex, blood and 4am out-of-body experience in the bathroom. And who the fuck is A$SAP ROCKY?

5. Barbarossa Umtrunk – Der Talisman Des Rosenkreuzers

A bombastic bridge between East and West. As the end is near the old idols rise again. Celebrating fire with fire.

4. Vatican Shadow – Ghosts Of Chechnya

Elevator music for the Intifada. When the martyrs go synth. I go apeshit.

3. Aluk Todolo – Occult Rock

A music that comes from the bowels of the earth. The true elemental source of psychedelia. Impressive.

2. Converge – All We Love We Leave Behind

The next chapter of an ongoing manifesto redefining hardcore music each time. And yes my friend, you will cry, all we love, we leave behind.

1. Swans – The Seer

As if St John himself decided to go upstate New York to write his Apocalypse on guitar. Perfection.

Nordic Quack

by Jeremy Stahl

Nothing says Christmas like Donald Duck … if you’re Swedish. Every culture has its own holiday customs, and Jeremy Stahl, a non-Swede and a “partially lapsed Jew,” stumbled upon an odd one during a trip to Sweden. In the article reprinted below, Stahl explains the Christmas cartoon tradition.

Power, Sex, Suicide [Greg Laden's Blog]

Nunca acheia que iria querer ler um livro sobre MITOCÔNDRIAS

Mitochondria are cool, important, and fascinating. You know the basic story. Mitochondria are the result of endosymbiosis. A bacterim or bacteria-like organism insinuated itself into another bacterium or bacteria-like organism. The former was small, the latter large. A relationship started up whereby the smaller one became an organelle in the larger one, and Eukaryotic life was formed. You probably also know that in multi-celled organisms mitochondria may be passed on by one sex (female) so paleogenetic research can sort out female lineages by looking only at the DNA found in the mitochondria (mtDNA). But there are things that perhaps you did not know, like the relationship between the whole mitochondria thing and why sex exists, various diseases including cancer, and aging (of cells and of organisms). Also, mitochondria related to organismic complexity, warm bloodedness, and a range of other basic biological facts of life.

Power, Sex, Suicide: Mitochondria and the Meaning of Life by Nick Lane is a bold and largely successful attempt at tying this all together in an engaging and informative way.

I know some teachers who read the book and have found much useful current, integrative material for use in their advanced biology classes. That’s a hint: If you know a life science teacher, this is a great stocking stuffer!

Life on Life on Life

by Miss Cellania

James Tyrwhitt-Drake runs the mind-blowing blog Infinity Imagined, where you'll find visualizations of things great and small, patterns in nature and math, and the beauty of discovery. Tyrwhitt-Drake created a gif image with a scanning electron microscope of a zoom into a tiny crustacean that had a diatom on it. More zoom reveals a single bacterium on the diatom. Cosmic.
