Tampons Confiscated, Guns Allowed as Texas Senate Debates Abortion

by Elspeth Reeve

State troopers confiscated tampons and maxi pads from people entering the Texas Senate gallery on Friday afternoon as senators began debating a controversial new abortion regulations that are almost certain to pass. However, folks with conceal-and-carry permits are allowed in with their guns, as state law allows. It seems like an unusual threat analysis, but things are different in Texas.

The tampon confiscations were initially reported by the liberal Texas blog Burnt Orange Report and others entering the state Senate. (Photos above by Shelby Alexander.) State troopers said they were taking anything that could be thrown at legislators, which included tampons, maxi pads, sugar packets, and condoms. But guns are still a go. When state Sen. Wendy Davis filibustered the abortion bill during the previous special session, uproar from the crowd helped prevent Republicans from passing the bill before deadline. They took several measures to prevent that from happening again. This time, the vote is happening with weeks to spare in the special session, and on Thursday, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said, "We're going to have strict enforcement. If there are any demonstrations, we are going to clear the gallery."

Lionsgate Denounces NOM & Orson Scott Card, Will Host Ender's Game LGBT Benefit

by Joe
“As proud longtime supporters of the LGBT community, champions of films ranging from GODS AND MONSTERS to THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER and a Company that is proud to have recognized same-sex unions and domestic partnerships within its employee benefits policies for many years, we obviously do not agree with the personal views of Orson Scott Card and those of the National Organization for Marriage. However, they are completely irrelevant to a discussion of ENDER’S GAME. The simple fact is that neither the underlying book nor the film itself reflect these views in any way, shape or form. On the contrary, the film not only transports viewers to an entertaining and action-filled world, but it does so with positive and inspiring characters who ultimately deliver an ennobling and life-affirming message. Lionsgate will continue its longstanding commitment to the LGBT community by exploring new ways we can support LGBT causes and, as part of this ongoing process, will host a benefit premiere for ENDER’S GAME.” - Lionsgate Entertainment, via email.

gethsemane lutheran church {colourful places & spaces}

Courtney shared this story from plenty of colour:
!!!

If colour ever becomes its own religion, I think I found the ideal place of worship. Designed by Olson Kundig Architects, the redevelopment of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Seattle is a striking combination of modern lines and glowing colour. The street-level chapel and courtyard feature clear and coloured glass panels set in two story high steel frames. As the sun shifts throughout the day, this busy downtown space becomes an ever-changing kaleidoscope of coloured light that manages to be both peaceful and vivid. I just love how the simple lines and colour palette turn the idea of traditional stained glass into modern art. No matter what your spiritual outlook may be, I can’t imagine finding this space anything less than heavenly…

Film: Great Job, Internet!: Arnold Schwarzenegger just wants Reddit to get along

Arnold Schwarzenegger won the hearts of Redditors with his Ask Me Anything session back in January, and seems to have taken a liking to the "front page of the Internet." GovSchwarzenegger has since maintained an active presence on the site, namely in /r/Fitness. He even did a second AMA just about working out. Fitness advice isn’t the only thing he has contributed, however.

Yesterday on the subreddit, somebody posted a link from the former governor/current Terminator’s website about the best cardio workout ever (which one can only assume is to stand up during commercials or something). And, because it's the Internet, an argument commenced that only Arnold could terminate. His comment was quite insightful, and could probably be applied to many an argument that takes place on the Internet. Also, kudos to LumberingOaf for his double gold response: “Come with me if you want to ...

The Pope Criminalizes Leaks

by samzenpus

via firehose

PolygamousRanchKid writes "Pope Francis overhauled the laws that govern the Vatican City State on Thursday, criminalizing leaks of Vatican information and specifically listing sexual violence, prostitution and possession of child pornography as crimes against children that can be punished by up to 12 years in prison. But without the leaks, how would we find out about those crimes against children? Many of the new provisions were necessary to bring the city state's legal system up to date after the Holy See signed international treaties, such as the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child. Others were necessary to comply with international norms to fight money-laundering, part of the Vatican's push toward financial transparency. One new crime stands out, though, as an obvious response to the leaks of papal documents last year that represented one of the gravest Vatican security breaches in recent times. Paolo Gabriele, the butler for then-Pope Benedict XVI, was tried and convicted by a Vatican court of stealing Benedict's personal papers and giving them to an Italian journalist, Gianluigi Nuzzi. Using the documents, Nuzzi published a blockbuster book on the petty turf wars, bureaucratic dysfunction and allegations of corruption and homosexual liaisons that afflict the highest levels of Catholic Church governance. Gabriele, who said he wanted to expose the 'evil and corruption' that plagued the Holy See, was convicted of aggravated theft and sentenced to 18 months in the Vatican's police barracks."

Video Interlude: Watch Goats Bring 'Wow Factor' to a Japanese Cafe

by Erin DeJesus

goatsjapan5001.jpg

Japanese cat and dog cafes — where guests can play with friendly animals while they drink their coffee — are already a thing, so one enterprising Tokyo cafe owner has returned to the farm for her cafe gimmick. Cafe owner Rena Kawaguchi has raised two goats, named Sakura and Chocolate, and brings them to her downtown Tokyo cafe in an effort to allow guests to "get closer to nature." Says Kawaguchi: "We though an everyday animal... wouldn't have the wow factor of a goat." As Kawaguchi tells one reporter, she has ambitions to open an elephant cafe in the future. There's goat video, go watch here:

Black Heron

(Egretta ardesiaca)

also referred to as a black egret, the black heron is a wading bird of the family Ardeidae (herons) native to most bodies of water in southern Africa and Madagascar. They are a medium sized bird growing up to 66cm long, and true to their name thy have a jet black body with yellow legs. But the most interesting feature about these birds is not their plumage or size but their method of feeding which is called canopy feeding, where the bird uses it’s wings to create a sort of umbrella which shades the water under it which in turn attracts fish which the bird then eats

Why Brummell Would Choose Jetted Pockets

by Will
Russian Sledges

via multitask suicide

“Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but nothing left to take away.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery

The Duke of Windsor liked them, Gary Cooper liked them, Gianni Agnelli liked them, and the Duke of Edinburgh likes them. I am, of course, referring to jetted pockets on jackets. They may be the most inconspicuous detail on a coat, far less noticeable than the shape or the colour, the button stance or the number of vents. However, while they may not call attention to themselves they have, I believe, a great impact on the overall impression made by a jacket.

The logic that means jetted pockets are a ‘correct’ element of eveningwear is that they lengthen the line of the jacket, and so the body, by avoiding the two horizontal lines that pocket flaps draw on man’s waist. They seem to lend an air of sleek sophistication to an outfit. This logic seems to make jetted pockets a good idea for most of the jackets in a man’s wardrobe. They obviously make sense on a city suit designed for elegant environments, be they offices or restaurants, but they also make sense on odd jackets, particularly those made from thick cloth that will accentuate the flap’s appearance. They aren’t universally applicable, as flaps do perform the modest function of helping to keep the rain out of a pocket, but there’s good reason to believe that they should become the default setting for tailored jackets.

New submitter Ahmed Shaban writes "Why do protesters in Cairo use laser pointers? At the beginning, they were used to light up snipers on rooftops. Later, it just became fashionable to use them, and such things spread very fast among the youth of Cairo, who can find the high power laser pointers for sale on the sidewalks. The article contains amazing photos of a chopper lit up by green laser pointers."

Marimekko Repeats – Divide and Conquer

by Megan
Russian Sledges

via snorkmaiden

Lately Marimekko has blessed us with some amazing new printed fabrics, many of which also have amazingly long repeats; Marimekko Taapeli, Marimekko Sadonkorjuu, and Marimekko Siniverinen to name a few.

Selling by the repeat may mean a higher price tag, but you are also getting more fabric with the entire pattern so nothing crucial is cut off. We inspect and hand measure every new bolt that comes in to determine what the ideal cut is for the particular design.

Knowing what to do with such large, powerful prints can sometimes be confusing. One way we do it here is by breaking it up. You can break up the fabric in many ways, such as by making smaller, individual pillows or seat covers. If you are leaning towards displaying the fabric as wall art, however, you don’t need to hang the fabric as one continuous piece. Here are some examples of how to incorporate a wall hanging with these types of patterns that makes a statement but is not overwhelming. If you’re looking for step by step instructions of how to create such a canvas, feel free to refer to this previous post for some pointers.

Marimekko Musta Virta, split up and displayed in a row

Marimekko Juhannustaika, split and displayed with one horizontal, one vertical on separate shelves

Marimekko Kaiku, split into four equal parts and displayed as a puzzle-like portrait

Do you like the look of split canvas art, or do you prefer a single display? Let us know your opinion below!

SFist recently visited the San Francisco Zoo to hang out with five young Magellanic Penguins who were born in May. The chicks ranged from five to seven weeks old, and were attending Fish School, “where these adolescent penguins go to learn that there are ways to eat that don’t involve having someone barf on your face.” They’ll make their first public debut on July 27th in the March of the Penguins. Study Releases Predictably Depressing Findings on the State of Female Directors in British TV

Russian Sledges

via firehose

Directors UK, a professional association of film and TV directors, has released a study on the gender breakdown of directors working in television in the UK. The tl;dr of their findings is that last year only eight percent of episodes of television drama were directed by women, with the number of female directors for the BBC and ITV's flagship shows–Doctor Who and Poirot, respectively—totaling an impressive zero. I'm sorry, did I say impressive? I meant "incredibly frustrating," especially when you consider five years ago five percent of those shows' directors were repping it for the ladies. More details on the study, explanations for the lack of female directors, and the BBC's response are behind the cut.

Curiosity rover shoots video of Martian moonrise

by Lee Hutchinson
Russian Sledges

via firehose

NASA/JPL-Caltech.

NASA has released a new video made up of stills captured by its Curiosity Mars rover, showing the small moon Phobos climbing away from the horizon toward its zenith in the Martian sky. The moonrise, which takes 14 seconds in the video, was actually filmed one frame at a time over the course of 27 minutes on the evening of June 28, 2013.

Phobos is the larger of Mars' two moons, with a mean radius of about about 11.1 km. Its partner, Deimos, has a mean radius of 6.2 km and orbits quite a bit further out—about 23,000 km from Mars versus Phobos at 9,300 km. Both moons are likely captured asteroids, snared by Mars' gravity well at some point much earlier in the solar system's history.

According to CBS News, Curiosity is about to begin its first significant bit of travel on the Martian surface, traveling about 8 km away from its landing site to conduct experiments in the foothills of Aeolis Mons, also known as "Mount Sharp." Curiosity will take at least nine months to make the journey, with stops along the way to conduct observations and experiments.
