Next time you're on an outdoor excursion, be sure to be on the lookout for abandoned pottery pieces. Artist Kim Press from Sailing Adrift Studios regularly leaves some of her exquisite handmade pieces for people to take during her travels throughout the states and even other countries. Her only request is that they go to someone who will appreciate it.
Based in Texas, Press picked up pottery after being a stay-at-home mom for several years. She quickly became enamored with the activity and continued practicing her skills, and eventually, selling her work online. The first time she “abandoned” a piece of pottery was for an Instagram challenge. Press was so fond of the idea, however, that instead of letting it be a one-time thing, she made it a habit to bring her pottery along on her travels.
“I loved the idea that anyone could find my work,” she tells My Modern Met. “And I loved the idea that I could leave a piece of ‘me’ wherever I went. As of today, I have left my work in 36 states and three different countries.” Each bowl, mug, or plate is left with a handwritten note by Press, which tells whoever finds it that they are free to keep the item if it speaks to them. “I only ask that it be enjoyed, and if you like, you can let me know where it ends up,” Press writes in her notes.

While I knew that this comic book adaptation was in development, between the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and fact that Y: The Last Man was in development hell for about a decade (before getting canceled after one season, and yes, I’m still mad), it was a delightful surprise to get a trailer for Paper Girls this soon, after we first learned of the adaptation a few years ago. Created by writer Brian K. Vaughn and artist Cliff Chiang in 2015, Paper Girls follows a group of four young girls in the late-’80s, starting their first summer job.
I’m not a big fan of the ’80s aesthetic for stories with few exceptions, but I really love what I’ve read from Paper Girls so far. If you’re fatigued by this type of media, don’t worry, because this comic takes place through several time periods. The official synopsis for the show reads as follows:
Season 1 of Reservation Dogs was exactly the kind of show I wanted (and expected) from a Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi team-up, and the series got the praise it rightfully deserved. So it was only a matter of time before we got a second season, but now it seems as if we’re going to get it sooner than we thought! A new teaser for the second season dropped along with a release date, and we couldn’t be more excited to see where our favorite teens take us.

For most art lovers, visiting a museum or gallery is the only time they can see priceless works of art in person. Otherwise, our knowledge of these masterpieces is based on seeing them online and in textbooks. Well, Amsterdam-based studio Duinker & Dochters is bridging the gap between the digital and material in their limited series of accessories. The small team of designers have created a special piece of jewelry that gives art enthusiasts a chance to hold an entire museum in their hand and flaunt it on their wrist. Rembrandt's Hands a Lion's Paw is a “book bracelet” containing 1,400 numbered pages based on drawings of hands by the Old Master.
From afar, the unusual piece resembles a thick cuff with a luminescent detail along the side. Luske Gais and Lisa Duinker—the founders and primary artists behind Duinker & Dochters—sourced 300 drawings and etchings by Rembrandt from the Rijksmuseum's public website as the material for this piece. Then, they identified 1,400 images of hands from these works of art and formatted them into numbered, double-sided pages. The unique form of the bracelet was created by binding all of the pieces together with a variation of cross-stitch called brocheersteek. In doing so, the many individual sheets fan around the wearer's wrist in a way that is secure, but still loose enough that the individual can thumb through the drawings and admire them.
All of the pages are gilt-edged, which accounts for the golden glow of the wristlet. Additionally, the book bracelet features an 18-karat gold clasp and comes inside of a stunning black leather and red suede case handmade by the Amsterdam workshop Elbel Libro. Duinker & Dochters' collection of unusual pieces makes world-famous images not only touchable but wearable, too. “Digitial collections have become an integral part of our lives, from the photos on your phone to museum collections,” the studio explains. “These bits and bytes make them tangible in a new art form.”

Just realized something about Our Flag Means Death— it’s Peter Pan.
Stede is Wendy, telling bedtime stories to his ship of lost boys (and Jim). He’s bringing romanticized English domesticity to the high seas— and Blackbeard is enraptured by him, particularly by *that* part of him: the hidden closet of outfits, the cozy library full of books Stede has actually read, the sense of wonder and newness Stede brings to Ed’s old boring swashbuckling world.
Ed wants to become part of Stede’s world— trying out thimbles and kisses, or fine clothes in this case. They gather a crew of lost boys (and Jim) and Stede’s influence changes and softens them, while Ed challenges, endangers, and inspires them; their dream of the biggest, baddest, bestest lost boy there is. He’s immature, he’s fickle, he’s utterly captivating; he never grew up and he will always be the kraken on the dock.
Captain Hook, or the British empire, chases Peter Pan across the waves— for Ed’s legend but also for the harms he’s caused them— and then they eventually recognize Stede’s importance and use him against Ed, too.
And like with Peter Pan, Stede eventually leaves both Ed and the pirate life: Stede abandons Neverland to go home and “grow up”— returning to Mary. And here’s where he breaks the pattern: unlike Wendy, he comes back.
But even that is more complicated, and in interesting conversation with the original story: there is no “real world” to go back to, really. There is no correct way to grow up.
Stede cannot “go back” and “grow up”— because that path was always a lie. Mary, in his absence, has discovered a new path for herself into her own wondrous, adventurous world; she’s up-ended the fantasy of Growing Up, being serious, or a “normal” life and adulthood. It’s wonderful! I love Mary. He could go back, but their old life and marriage was fake— that was the real game of pretend.
Mary hollows out her life and their world in Stede’s absence and says: these parts were nonsense, and this worth keeping, and this worth building. It gives Stede the bravery to go back, but also the clarity and the context to see that neither world is more real than the other— that his love for Ed is real, too, and not something to be outgrown. He refuses the moral. Wendy goes back to Neverland to find the lost boys, to find Peter.
But most importantly: this means Izzy Hands is Tinkerbell
Bladesmith Tristan Dare is only 19 years old, but he's already making a name for himself. For the past five years, he has been crafting knives that are true works of art. And, interestingly, he often incorporates ancient materials into his blades. His latest piece, called Nebula, was crafted from one of the oldest meteorites ever recorded—it's estimated to be 4.5 billion years old. Set off with opal, gold, and an ancient wooly mammoth tooth, the blade is a masterpiece.
In a video posted to his YouTube channel last year, Dare shows how he takes meteorite and carefully crafts it into a blade. Step by step, the meteorite is worked over until it's perfectly sharp. Using meteorite as a material brings a unique touch to Dare's work. The pattern of the ancient metal is still visible, adding a visual interest beyond the cool factor of using a meteorite as a knife.
According to Dare, his interest in working with his hands began at a young age. At just 11 years old, he started woodworking, inspired by his grandfather who was an avid woodworker. After several years of woodworking and competing in contests, Dare began crafting his own chisels and tools. This is where his adventure with metal began.
Self-taught, he dove in to the world of bladesmithing and has not looked back. Now he's constantly pushing himself to new heights and is always on the lookout for interesting materials to incorporate into his blades. Dare often works with meteorite, which gives his blades a unique touch. For his handles, he also enjoys using rare and prehistoric materials like mammoth tusk or rare woods.

At 100 years old, Betty Reid Soskin—aka Ranger Betty—became the oldest active park ranger for the National Park Service (NPS). Now, Ranger Betty has finally decided to retire—something that is certainly well earned! Soskin’s retirement marks the close of an influential 16-year-career with the NPS. In the early 2000s, the NPS and the city of Oakland, California, began planning for a new national park. a then-84-year-old Soskin was passionately interested in the park’s theme and played an active role alongside the NPS on a research project “to uncover untold stories of African-Americans on the Home Front during World War II.” She’s been sharing her research and her own experience as a woman of color during the Second World War with park visitors ever since.
“Being a primary source in the sharing of that history—my history—and giving shape to a new national park has been exciting and fulfilling,” Soskin admits. And her efforts have not gone unnoticed. “Betty has made a profound impact on the National Park Service and the way we carry out our mission,” says NPS Director Charles F. “Chuck” Sams. “Her efforts remind us that we must seek out and give space for all perspectives so that we can tell a more full and inclusive history of our nation.”
Soskin’s work and pioneering approach have also had a broader impact on how the NPS shares stories about racism, marginalization, and discrimination. The park ranger has received coverage from various media outlets, including a piece in The New York Times. She stepped into the spotlight during the 2013 federal government shutdown when she urged lawmakers to act so that she can return to her work. In 2015, she ws invited to participate in a tree lighting ceremony at the Obama White House. During the pandemic, she held weekly virtual talks.
Soskin spent her final day on the job at the Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California. She spoke with the public and visited with coworkers. The park plans to celebrate Soskin and wish her a happy retirement on April 16, 2022.

So I don't have ADHD, but most of my friends I help with organizing do. Organizing is a passion of mine, so for years I've barreled through various friends' homes, trying to make the systems I use work for them. And for years, far too often, I've watched those systems fail.
Listen, I love a good mess. The bigger the piles in the smaller the space, the more excited I get. Even so, I reached a string of projects where nothing I did seemed to be working anymore. My neatly labeled containers were quickly buried in mountains of clutter. I'd leave a space pristine, only to come back and find empty counters filled again, neatly hung clothing strewn in piles, stacks of bins unstacked and scattered ... in short, my organizing efforts felt like a band-aid on a tidal wave. I knew I was doing something wrong, but what?
Then I realized the one common denominator: everyone I was working for at the time had ADHD. A-ha! And since ADHD brains see and process things differently, it makes sense that they organize differently, too.
So I got to work. I did as much online research as I could, but quickly became frustrated. So many click-bait videos and articles, so little help.
Then I went old-school, and bought an actual book. This book:
It has rave reviews and multiple re-prints, so I was beyond excited to inhale the whole thing. Finally. Answers!
Within a few pages I realized this book is for people with ADHD, not for people trying to help people with ADHD. The advice it gives is brutal and matter-of-fact, with zero allowance for things like mental health, retail therapy, collections, etc. And because it's not aimed at the helpers, it also doesn't give any advice on how to start conversations about, say, purging. It just tells you to purge.
In fact the #1 tool in author Susan Pinsky's arsenal is purging. In many cases it is the only tool she offers, instructing the reader to purge as much as 80% of a given space. Listen, if you only have 4 pots in an entire kitchen cabinet, then you don't need an organizing strategy:
... which of course is her whole point.
The book is filled with before-and-afters, each one with the "inventory" reduced to comically Spartan levels:
C'mon. No one is going to do this.
[Correction: from the comments I've learned some people DO do this, and love it. So don't let my disbelief stop you!]
With that said - and admitting I argued OUT LOUD with this book in every single chapter - Organizing Solutions did open my eyes to what I was doing wrong. It clearly explains why and how organizing is difficult for people with ADHD, and that perspective shift alone was worth the price.
With this new understanding came a whole new way of looking at organizing. Now I see why my methods won't work for an ADHD brain. I don't have all the solutions yet, but at least I can see the puzzle more clearly.

How many languages can Philip Crowther of the Associated Press speak? At least six. We know this because he's recently reported on the war in Ukraine in English, Portuguese, French, German, Spanish, and Luxembourgish.
The last of these is not surprising once one learns that Crowther was born in Luxembourg to a German mother and a British father. He was raised and educated in Luxembourg, as well as the UK. His travels have taken him around the world, where he rounded out his linguistic versatility.
So as this compilation of his recent reporting shows, Crowther is a very useful person to have when a news organization needs to understand and deliver information about rapidly changing current events.
