LuLu's Vintage Is Packing up and Moving to Spokane

by Katie Guinn

If you're a lover of vintage and a seasoned shopper who hits all the best retro boutiques here in Portland, then I'm sure we share the same sadness about Eden closing, and now we have word that another vintage gem is bidding farewell also: Lulu's Vintage on W. Burnside. Lulu has been a prominent asset and advocate for Portland's vintage scene over the years. On top of opening and overseeing her own sweet little shop in 2001 (it was located on SW Morrison before the Burnside location), she's also spent time blogging about all things vintage on her blog, Lulu’s Vintage, since January 2006, and has been writing about vintage and retro businesses and events in Portland on ShopVintagePortland.com since January 2008. Although she's packing up and leaving us, she won't be saying goodbye completely, because she'll still be keeping PDX peeps in the know while writing for ShopVintagePortland.com and her own blog—but most important, you can still get your hands on items from the website and etsy store... and if you happen to end up in Spokane someday soon, she plans to eventually open a new brick and mortar there too!

Everything in the store is at least 25% OFF! Vintage men’s and women’s clothing, accessories, jewelry, books, housewares and postcards are on sale for 25% - 90% OFF!!!

Illume, Pacifica, Pre de Provence, and Stella Mare candles, soaps and lotions are 50% OFF!!!

Come dig through our huge $3 to $15 bargain bins filled with leather and fabric belts; silk, cotton and wool scarves and handkerchiefs; leather & fabric gloves; sewing patterns, and fabric.

The sale lasts through June 21st/22nd and the store is open every afternoon except on Tuesdays.

Colleges can't afford to pay players, but can afford $5 billion in new athletics buildings

by Kevin Trahan

One of the NCAA's major arguments against paying players is that the schools don't have enough money to do it, pointing to the fact that many athletic departments technically operate in the red. However, a number floated out during Tuesday's O'Bannon testimony by economist Roger Noll tells a different story.

Noll table shows $5 billion in facilities projects going on in major college sports

— Steve Berkowitz (@ByBerkowitz) June 10, 2014

So how can an industry be spending $5 billion, collectively, on building $68 million football facilities (complete with waterfalls) or spending $7 million on one coach's salary when it claims to be broke? It's an issue of inefficient replacement.

NCAA rules don't allow universities to give money to the athletes, so they spend luxuriously on facilities to attract top recruits. The big schools typically still get the best recruits, so it's not like the current system preserves competitive balance.

However, it would be much more efficient — and much more beneficial to athletes — if the rules allowed for them to just be better compensated. If the rules were changed to allow for athlete compensation, money would simply be re-appropriated from locker room waterfalls into the pockets of players, many of whom need that money to live off of more than they need a waterfall in the place they get dressed.

To win an antitrust case, the plaintiffs must prove whom the inefficient market is harming. After struggling at the beginning of his testimony, Noll did a good job showing how both the schools and the athletes are being restrained, and that the rules could be less restrictive. The NCAA must prove why the rules are necessary to maintain its business model without simply stating that it would lose money.

Newswire: Taylor Swift made a Drake needlepoint, as Taylor Swift does

by Sean O'Neal

Amid her expedition to circumnavigate the Earth and map its borders in puff paint, Sailor Twift occasionally finds the downtime to pursue other arts and crafts—most of these combining quaint, old-world customs, as practiced by her frontiersman forebears, and hip-hop quotes, as seen all over Etsy. And because she doesn’t have any nephews old enough to disappoint at Christmas yet, most of these are then gifted to friend and tourmate Ed Sheeran, who no doubt already has a closet filled with posterboard collages covered in magazine cutouts and glitter. (“No, don’t open that,” Sheeran will say, too late, to visitors, as an avalanche of ransom-lettered “BFF”s tumble out.)

What Sheeran definitely has is some homemade jam Taylor Swift made by putting her feelings about Kanye West in a jar, then preserving them in fermenting rage and pectin. And according to the upcoming MTV documentary 9 Days ...

Google’s university book scanning can move ahead without authors’ OK

by David Kravets

A federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld the right of universities, in conjunction with Google, to scan millions of library books without the authors' permission.

The 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals, ruling in a case brought by the Authors Guild and other writers' groups, argued that the universities were not breaching federal copyright law, because the institutions were protected by the so-called "fair use" doctrine. More than 73 percent of the volumes were copyrighted.

The guild accused 13 universities in all of copyright infringement for reproducing more than 10 million works without permission and including them in what is called the HathiTrust Digital Library (HDL) available at 80 universities. The institutions named in the case include the University of California, Cornell University, Indiana University, and the University of Michigan.

Breaking news from Paris! The Pont des Arts, famous because of the large amount of love locks which were placed on its fences by thousands of couples… began to collapse due to the high weigh of these love locks.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, as a consequence, ordered the removal of all the love locks. The Pont des Arts will never be the same anymore.

An international love symbol has disaspeared…

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(((( this is so sad!

Sadder than being on the bridge, placing your lock, when it collapses under the weight of everyone else’s locks? That would be sadder.

lifeworkfun: Dr Joan Higginbotham the second Black Woman to...

lifeworkfun:

Dr Joan Higginbotham the second Black Woman to become an astronaut.

Via Wikipedia:

Joan Elizabeth Higginbotham (born August 3, 1964) is an American engineer and a former NASA astronaut. She flew aboard Space Shuttle Discoverymission STS-116 as a mission specialist.[2]

Higginbotham began her career in 1987 at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida, as a Payload Electrical Engineer in the Electrical and Telecommunications Systems Division.[2][3] Within six months she became the lead for the Orbiter Experiments (OEX) on OV-102, the Space Shuttle Columbia. She later worked on the Shuttle payload bay reconfiguration for all Shuttle missions and conducted electrical compatibility tests for all payloads flown aboard the Shuttle. She was also tasked by KSC management to undertake several special assignments where she served as the Executive Staff Assistant to the Director of Shuttle Operations and Management, led a team of engineers in performing critical analysis for the Space Shuttle flow in support of a simulation model tool, and worked on an interactive display detailing the Space Shuttle processing procedures at Spaceport USA (Kennedy Space Center’s Visitors Center). Higginbotham then served as backup orbiter project engineer for OV-104, Space Shuttle Atlantis, where she participated in the integration of the orbiter docking station (ODS) into the space shuttle used during Shuttle/Mir docking missions. Two years later, she was promoted to lead orbiter project engineer for OV-102, Space Shuttle Columbia. In this position, she held the technical lead government engineering position in the firing room where she supported and managed the integration of vehicle testing and troubleshooting. She actively participated in 53 space shuttle launches during her 9-year tenure at Kennedy Space Center.

Selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in April 1996, Higginbotham reported to the Johnson Space Center in August 1996. Since that time, she had been assigned technical duties in the Payloads & Habitability Branch, the Shuttle Avionics & Integration Laboratory (SAIL), the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Operations (Ops) Support Branch, where she tested various modules of the International Space Station for operability, compatibility, and functionality prior to launch, the Astronaut Office CAPCOM (Capsule Communicator) Branch in the startup and support of numerous space station missions and space shuttle missions, the Robotics Branch, and Lead for the International Space Station Systems Crew Interfaces Section.

Higginbotham logged over 308 hours in space during her mission with the crew of STS-116 where her primary task was to operate the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS). Higginbotham took a scarf for the Houston Dynamo on board with her during her mission.[4]

Higginbotham was originally assigned to the crew of STS-126 targeted for launch in September 2008.[5][6] On November 21, 2007, NASA announced a change in the crew manifest, due to Higginbotham’s decision to leave NASA to take a job in the private sector.[7] Donald Pettit replaced Higginbotham for STS-126.[8]

Awards and Honors[edit]

In 2007, Higginbotham received the Adler Planetarium Women in Space Science Award.

  • NASA Exceptional Service Medal
  • Group Award for achievements related to the flight of STS-26 (the first shuttle flight after the Challenger disaster)
  • Commendation of Merit for Service to the Department of Defense Missions
  • Black Rose Award (2007) awarded by the (League of Black Women) for contribution to gender equality

Dealing With Potential Vulnerabilies in arkOS

by Jacob Cook

We have been made aware of rumoured vulnerabilities in several components of arkOS, namely the Genesis web-based management system and the Beacon client for the arkOS Network Browser. The individuals responsible for uncovering these alleged vulnerabilities have declined to responsibly disclose them, meaning that we have next to nothing to go on when it comes to fixing these alleged problems. We are not even sure if these are legitimate problems that they are referring to: it could just be suggestive trolling. The highly irresponsible behaviour by these individuals does a disservice to the security community as a whole, and we condemn their refusal to follow industry practice.

To prevent against potential misuse during the development period, Genesis and Beacon should both be made only accessible on your local network, which can easily be done via the Security pane.  This is the best way to contribute to the security of your arkOS server at the present time.

We take all claims of security problems in arkOS seriously, no matter how vague they may be. Because of this, we would like to emphasize the following highly important points to keep in mind when using arkOS at this time:

  • arkOS is a work-in-progress, and should be considered Alpha, only usable for testing and development purposes. There is a reason why this is plastered all over our website: we are moving quickly building the core of arkOS to reflect our goals for the platform, large parts of it have been kept unchanged from old versions of software it depends upon, and some items may remain unfixed or poorly implemented until we achieve stable status.
  • At this stage, security updates from upstream may be delayed. As a derivative of Arch Linux ARM, we depend on them for security updates to certain packages. But as we are in such early stages, we do not update our repositories every day: certain packages may be held back due to temporary compatibility issues, or lack of resources. As the project progresses toward stability, we will make improvements in how this is handled.
  • The discovery of bugs, problems and vulnerabilities are normal and to be expected over the course of software development. They will be fixed when they are encountered.
  • Security vulnerabilities should be described in detail and sent to jacob@citizenweb.is (PGP key here) so that we can fix them for our users as soon as possible.

Even in these early days, the well-being of our users is foremost in our mind, and we have done our best to make the state of the software at present clear to everyone. We hope that this post will help you understand should potential issues come to light in the coming weeks.

Thank you.

Charter school board president's resignation over Common Core has social media abuzz | MLive.com

by hodad

Polet, a board member since 1998 and president since December, told MLive and The Grand Rapids Press that Common Core is going to be the “death knell” of the charter school movement and all public schools. He said students at the academy are not performing as well as they did two years ago and blames that on the aggressive implementation of Common Core.

A review of the schools' state standardized test scores show the reading scores in 2011-12 were generally higher, except for fourth grade reading, which is at 85.4 student proficiency, compared to 79 percent two years ago. There were no significant declines, except for seventh grade reading, which was at 69 percent proficiency, down from 93 percent. Math scores were mixed, with some grades performing better and others worse.

I made up a fake Donald Trump quote, and he retweeted it

by David Roth

In which a humble sportswriter meets The Greatest Businessman In The World. On Twitter.

I sat a few feet from Donald Trump, once. It was at the funeral of an estranged uncle who was regarded as sort of a villain and sort of a thief -- the Yiddish word you'd use would be gonif -- by most people in my family, and probably by many in his profession. This uncle made a lot of money, despite that or more likely because of it, and a service was held for him at a swank funeral home on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Trump was there for the service, sitting above the gallery, by himself. I didn't see him leave.

I can report that he has a weird sort of gravitas, in the way that famous people do, and also that he is a strikingly strange physical presence. He has the complexion of a creamsicle, and his hair swirls atop his head with disconcerting translucence -- a cotton candy sculpture in the shape of a vending machine honey bun. And that, until the moment that Donald Trump retweeted and appropriated a fake Donald Trump quote that I wrote, was the closest I've ever come to interacting with him.

I can explain, or I can at least try to explain my part of this. Sometimes, when I am supposed to be either writing or sleeping, I am on Twitter being an idiot. More often than it should, this involves ventriloquizing Donald Trump in ways designed to goof on the bellowing crassness and grandiose dopiness that are Trump's trademark.

My opinions on Trump as an unpleasant public figure, exemplar of idiot materialism and general charlatan are a matter of public record. Mostly what I'm interested in with these tweets is Trump's online voice, which is both stupendously vain and stupendously petty, and not at all like anyone else on Twitter. (Although Alec Baldwin is pretty close.)

Unless you wish to see a steady stream of Trump retweeting people urging him to run for President, the odd reheated talking point, and pictures of his golf courses, there is no real reason to follow him on Twitter. Every now and then, though, Trump will air it out a bit, and the results are glorious: one of our greatest public a-holes issuing one high squeaking fart after another into the internet ether. I vividly recall, on the night that Hurricane Sandy made devastating landfall in New York, Trump tweeting well into the night about how much weight Bette Midler had gained.

This is the voice I emulate, mostly. The key is to come up with the most fatuous possible points and spammiest possible self-promotion, and then deliver them in the most pompous and self-flattering possible way. So:

"At Donald Trump KIA of Center Islip, you get the ultimate in automotive luxury. Very sad for the losers and haters who can't see that."

— David Roth (@david_j_roth) October 24, 2013

And, again, I have many better things to do. Mostly I do them. Sometimes, as I did a few minutes after midnight on Monday, I do this instead:

Donald Trump dictates his memoirs while eating steak on a toilet. "Too many people these days don't care about winning. I call them losers."

— David Roth (@david_j_roth) June 10, 2014

This was apparently not enough. Twitter says that it was less than a minute later that I tweeted another fatuous fake Trump quote.

"I was never one who looked at success as bad. For me, success was always good. I loved it, and still do." - Donald Trump, WINNING, pg. 27

— David Roth (@david_j_roth) June 10, 2014

It's worth noting that Donald Trump has never written a book called Winning. He has never said these specific words, at least in print. Which made this, just a few minutes later, that startling:

"@david_j_roth: "I was never one who looked at success as bad. For me, success was always good. I loved it, and still do." Donald Trump

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 10, 2014

I am still trying to figure out what this means, beyond the fact that TV Billionaire Donald Trump is up after midnight name-searching himself on Twitter. Did he just appropriate what I wrote and make it his own, and so undercut the joke by making it into a non-joke? Did he, as I sincerely hope, look at this nutrition-free successory-grade platitude and think, "yeah, close enough?"

Whatever the case, my mentions are still EXTREMELY LUXURIOUS twelve hours later:

@CEGeorge100ufc @david_j_roth @George, spoken like a true freeloader, I give plenty, I earn n like things I earn by working 4 it

— Nic Palagno (@Palagno) June 10, 2014

@realDonaldTrump @bellatmg @david_j_roth in free&democratic society that is the correct stmt.Only Libatards are jealous of others success

— ritzy jewels (@ritzy_jewels) June 10, 2014

This brief dunk in the fishtank of Donald Trump's followers is probably as close as I'll ever come to feeling much sympathy for him. Trump is a bum in a million different ways, but Twitter can't be an easy place for him to be. There are people hustling for donations, mega-ditto'ing his thundering criticisms of Obungler, and calling him a toilet person, probably in about equal measure.

But all the subliterate flattery from his various supplicants doesn't seem to have done him any favors, either; it's easy to see how that humid climate might hasten his ripening into his present state of bellowing, ugly self-parody. It is easy, if you try a little bit, to imagine why he might search for something inspirational about himself late at night, just to break away from the unease and idiocy he's gathered around him. And it's not like what I wrote is any less ghostwritten than anything else with his name on it.

In its way, our tweet espouses a very popular and premium-quality sentiment. Everyone loves it. It's sad for the haters and losers who can't see that.

An ad exec says Apple is a less interesting company to work for than Coke or Pepsi

Apple, whose advertising campaigns over the decades have generated both critical acclaim and commercial success, is starting to bring more marketing functions in-house. Under CEO Tim Cook, the company is “madly building an internal agency that it’s telling recruits will eventually number 1,000,” Ann-Christine Diaz and Maureen Morrison wrote for Advertising Age.

But despite Apple’s reputation for excellence and potential spending power, there are skeptics. One “top agency exec who was approached” by Apple tells Advertising Age, “The revolution has come and gone, and I’m not sure a job at Apple would be a creative opportunity. If I were going to go brand-side, there are a lot more interesting companies I’d rather work for, like Coke or Pepsi.”

Why might someone feel that way? A couple guesses: While Apple still spends heavily on offline, outdoor, and television advertising, it hasn’t done much interesting work in digital—yet. And its famously sparse product line doesn’t offer much variety in the work.

As an aside, Pepsi’s mention brings to mind a funny connection: Steve Jobs famously lured John Sculley from Pepsi to be Apple’s CEO in the 1980s with the line, “Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want to come with me and change the world?” Perhaps the answer to that question depends on your line of work.

Unsurprisingly, the Italian World Cup team is traveling in far better style than the English

by Jenni Avins
Italian national soccer team players in dolce and gabbana suits

Fashionable travel is tough. Trousers get wrinkled, temperatures are unpredictable, and for overnight international flights, comfort is of the essence. But Italy’s national soccer team still managed to pull off a stylish arrival in Rio de Janeiro last week.

Shortly after 4am, team Italy stepped off the plane sporting their official three-piece navy wool Dolce & Gabbana off-duty suits. The English team, on the other hand, opted for warmup-ready shorts, polo-style shirts, and sneakers, in spite of being similarly provided with charcoal mohair blend suits by the department store Marks & Spencer.

Apparently, England’s cheaper (£264) Marks & Spencer suits—not unlike the slightly frumpy suits (link in Italian) they wore in 2012—were selected to give fans something they could actually buy, should they want to dress like players off-duty.

But despite the perception of Italian sartorial superiority, the British are no slouches when it comes to suiting. Perhaps if England had paired up with a swankier Savile Row tailor or a designer like Paul Smith to make them nicer suits, the team would have been inspired to change before landing.

CUPHEAD in CUPHEAD’S AMAZING E3 TRAILER ADVENTURE

CUPHEAD

CUPHEAD

CUPHEAD!

Whether or not I’ll play this bouncy-shooty thing is a question for another day, but boy-oh-boy, I could watch these Fleischeresque trailers for ever. It’s been the talk of sekrit RPS chatroom town all day, and tussles with No Man’s Sky for most Cor Blimey trailer to come out of E3 yet.

We have seen Cuphead previously, and it impressed us then, but it seems to have come along a ton since, really nailing its early animation aesthetic now. Between this and UbiArt (and also Double Fine’s Broken Age), it’s become a wonderful new age for 2D, cartoon-style games. The artist is going to have so much power now.

Incidentally – and hey, actual information rather than my just repeating the same capitalised word – Cuphead was made in Unity. Sometimes I think I can recognise a Unity game a mile off, but this just goes to show how diverse and surprising the little engine that could is these days.

CUPHEAD

Sorry.
