Are Farm Dogs Happier Than Lap Dogs?

Although the love between man and dog is indeed powerful, you might wonder whether the active, outdoors pup is enjoying a more enriching existence than his indoors counterpart. By keeping dogs as inside companions, are we asking them to lead less satisfying lives?

TV Club: Fargo: “A Fox, A Rabbit, And A Cabbage”

by Zack Handlen, Todd VanDerWerff
firehose

wait, Key AND Peele are in this?

Zack: It’s in the natural tendency of audiences to sympathize with a protagonist. This makes sense; after all, we see ourselves as the protagonists of our own lives, and when someone is the central focus of a narrative, there’s an automatic transference between the audience and the character on-screen (or on page). Part of the pleasure of watching shows is in getting to lose ourselves in stories that are not our own, but stories we can pretend, however briefly, belong to us.

I’m not sure if Lester is the central protagonist of Fargo. I want to say Molly is, because she’s clearly the hero, and because empathizing with her is a lot less painful and ugly. But Lester is definitely a focus, and in his screen-time, we’ve been encouraged to try and see the world through his eyes, which is where that reflexive sympathy pops ...

Ayn Rand's Actual Letter To Cat Fancy

Ayn Rand liked cats. She also wrote repetitively long-winded books and developed "Objectivism," the philosophical system for people who pleasure themselves over thoughts of laissez-faire capitalism and believe that self-interest is the highest moral purpose and that’s that, the objective truth, f*ck you. But she also really liked cats.

Your Favorite Alcoholic Drinks Under The Microscope

Up close, some of our favorite adult beverages like the Margarita, Bloody Mary, and the Mint Julep look brilliantly-colored and feature vibrant patterns of magentas, blues, teals, and more. They are chaotic, abstract compositions that are delightfully loud and look like textural paintings rather than a mixed drink.

Troutdale, Oregon, home to latest U.S. school shooting | MSNBC:

superfist:

"Today’s shooting in Troutdale, about a half-hour east of Portland, comes just two days after the mass shooting in Las Vegas.

Which came just two days after the shooting at the courthouse in Forsyth County, Georgia.

Which came just four days after the shooting on the campus of Seattle Pacific University.

Which came just a week after the mass shooting near UC Santa Barbara.”

You just wrap your head around that for a couple of minutes, without judgement. Read that quote calmly, logically, without dogma or political leanings.

The fact that our culture allows this to continue is abhorrent. Not from an anti or pro stance, nor from a right or left, but from the simplest form of basic human existence in which one has the right to live.

America, we are doing it wrong and, until we act, we prove that we are not nearly as disturbed by that fact as we should be.

Teacher Tenure Laws Ruled Unconstitutional In California

by Soulskill
firehose

UH OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

An anonymous reader writes "Tenure laws one of the most controversial aspects of education reform, and now the tide seems to be turning against them. A California judge has handed down a ruling that such laws are unconstitutional, depriving students of an education by sometimes securing positions held by bad teachers. The judge said, "Substantial evidence presented makes it clear to this court that the challenged statutes disproportionately affect poor and/or minority students. The evidence is compelling. Indeed, it shocks the conscience." The plaintiff's case was that "California's current laws make it impossible to get rid of the system's numerous low-performing and incompetent teachers; that seniority rules requiring the newest teachers to be laid off first were harmful; and that granting tenure to teachers after only two years on the job was farcical, offering far too little time for a fair assessment of their skills." This is a precedent-setting case, and there will likely be many similar cases around the country as tenure is challenged with this new ammunition."

Amazon stops taking pre-orders for 'Lego Movie' in dispute with Warner Bros.

by Casey Newton

Another high-profile Amazon vendor has apparently found itself at the mercy of the company's aggressive pricing tactics. The New York Times reports that Amazon has stopped taking pre-orders for upcoming Warner Home Video offerings including The Lego Movie, Winter's Tale, and Transcendence, among others. It comes as the company is locked in a dispute with the book publisher Hachette over e-book pricing that has seen Amazon stop taking pre-orders and delay shipments for weeks. The move has drawn wide criticism, particularly among Hachette authors, whose ranks include Stephen Colbert.

The Times reports that Amazon stopped taking pre-orders for Warner movies in mid-May, leading to complaints on the company's forums. While they can't buy them in advance, customers can still sign up to be notified when the movies go on sale. Neither Warner nor Amazon would comment while they negotiate a resolution. In the meantime, customers eager to get their hands on The Lego Movie should probably look somewhere else.

Newswire: Paul Giamatti’s FX pilot not going to series

by Sam Barsanti

While TV has plenty of respectable actors of its own, everyone knows that movie actors are the stars that truly shine the brightest. For years, though, only the best and/or worst movie actors have had the talent (or lack thereof) to make it on TV. Actors like Mads Mikkelsen, Zooey Deschanel, and Christian Slater made the jump from movies to regular roles on TV, and, at the very least, they all managed to avoid burning anything down. Some more than others.

Now, sadly, we won’t get to see Paul Giamatti do the same, as FX has decided not to pick up the pilot for Hoke, a darkly comic detective show that Giamatti was set to star in. This news comes via Deadline, which also reports that Hoke is the only drama pilot ordered by FX this year that it is not moving forward with. The other two, Tyrant ...

Sean Weatherspoon injury: Falcons LB out for season with ruptured Achilles

by Matt Conner
firehose

fuck the Falcons

The Falcons' defense takes a big hit with the loss of their leader in the middle.

Atlanta Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon suffered a ruptured Achilles on Tuesday while working with the team's medical staff, according to the team's website. He will miss the 2014 season.

Weatherspoon was running when the injury occurred and immediately underwent testing that confirmed the season-ending ailment. He will have a procedure to repair the damage soon and is expected to make a full recovery.

"During Sean’s run today with our medical staff, he suffered an injury," head coach Mike Smith said. "We sent Sean to the doctor for some additional testing and evaluation and unfortunately the results showed that he ruptured his Achilles tendon. Sean had been working extremely hard to get back on the field, but regrettably he will miss the entire 2014 season. He will have a procedure done in the near future and we expect him to make a full recovery."

The 26-year-old was a play-caller with the Falcons' defense. His absence will be felt among a unit that finished 27th in total defense last season, according to Pro-Football-Reference.com. He played in and started just seven games in 2013 and was working to get back on the field under a clean bill of health for the 2014 season.

As Dave Choate of The Falcoholic points out, the Falcons now have to lean upon a very inexperienced bunch to step in at an important position:

This also has a cascade effect on the rest of the linebacking corps, obviously. 'Spoon was a lock to start if he was healthy, but without him the Falcons will be leaning more heavily on their second year and rookie linebacker in his absence. Kroy Biermann and Jonathan Massaquoi will likely start outside, with Paul Worrilow, Prince Shembo and Akeem Dent competing for starting gigs on the inside. The Falcons also have Marquis Spruill, Osi Umenyiora, Tyler Starr and Yawin Smallwood in the mix, so they're not short on options, even if many of those options are unproven.

In four NFL seasons, Weatherspoon has suited up for all 16 games just once in 2011, his best campaign where he registered four sacks, defensed eight passes and finished with 86 solo tackles and 39 assists on tackles.
