This one-man putback dunk never gets old

by James Dator

It doesn't matter that a dunk this good happened over a year ago.

This amazing dunk happened over a year ago, but it seems people are only finding out about Izzy Wagner's above-rim heroics now, thanks to Keith Olbermann.

The high-school all-star shut it down in the East County All-Star game and it's a darn shame this didn't count — all because he hung on the rim a touch too long. A rival school was looking to credit Wagner's teammate Taihir McMurray, but he would have none of it.

@powayboyshoops That was Izzy lol

— Taihir Mcmurray (@ShiftyTai) June 20, 2014

Which dunk happened where and when? None of it really matters, this is totally awesome regardless.

Kurt Cobain's Daughter Warns Lana Del Rey About Romanticizing Death - Yahoo Celebrity

by gguillotte
“The death of young musicians isn't something to romanticize. I'll never know my father because he died young and it becomes a desirable feat because people like you think it's ‘cool,'” Cobain wrote in a since-deleted tweet noticed by FasterLouder. “Well, it's fucking not. Embrace life, because you only get one life. The ppl u mentioned wasted that life. Don't be 1 of those ppl ur too talented to waste it away.”

Pilot of missing Flight 370 has been named ‘chief suspect’

Malaysian detectives grew increasingly suspicious of the pilot after discovering that Capt. Zaharie Ahmad Shah programmed his flight simulator with a route that would land a plane on a small island in the Indian Ocean, the Sunday Times of London reports.

Shah had deleted the drills, but computer experts were able to recover them.

A Chinese tycoon is offering poor Americans $300 to have lunch with him

by Heather Timmons
Tycoons who lunch.

If you’re American, feeling financially strapped, and in New York City next week, you might want to stop by Central Park’s Boathouse restaurant.

There, Chinese businessman Chen Guangbiao, who made his fortune in recycling but is better known for his philanthropic publicity stunts, thwarted plan to buy The New York Times, and this completely over the top business card, plans to host 1,000 “poor and destitute” US citizens to lunch, and then give them each $300.

In an advertisement placed in The New York Times on Monday, Chen promised the June 25 luncheon would be a continuation of his plan to “fill the world with love,” through charity, and compared himself to Lei Feng, a selfless People’s Liberation Army soldier and philanthropist. He also promised in a later interview to sing “We are the world” (in English) during the lunch. Here’s the ad, courtesy of jimromanesko.com:

Tap to expand image

Chen is trying to spread a message to the US that there’s more to China’s wealthy than corruption and luxury goods, while spurring other rich people in China to do some good, he said. “There are many wealthy Chinese billionaires, but most of them gained their wealth from market speculation and colluding with government officials while destroying the environment,” Chen said, explaining the lunch to the South China Morning Post.

Chen’s planned luncheon (at a restaurant where “fish and chips” costs $26 and a bread basket is $12) may go down like a lead balloon, if it happens at all. While New York City’s poverty rates are rising, and nearly half the city lives at near-poverty levels (pdf), it is unclear how many New Yorkers want to be involved in a wealthy foreigner’s publicity stunt. His well-publicized plans have fallen apart before—particularly the push to buy the New York Times, which never got off the ground after a shareholder meeting he thought he had never materialized.

If you do want to attend the luncheon, however, you need to RSVP, to a hotmail address provided in the advertisement: weishanzuile@hotmail.com.

unexplained-events: In Seattle, Washington, an aged and...

unexplained-events:

In Seattle, Washington, an aged and allegedly “haunted” coke machine has been in the same spot for over fifteen years, but despite its outward appearance the machine is fully functional. In fact, the machine has always worked. Some of the drinks it dispenses are normal Coke products, but some are products that are no longer on the market and don’t exist any more. Some of the buttons are labeled as a “mystery” and give a random product when pushed. The business closest to it, a locksmith, state that they have never witnessed anyone restocking the machine at any time, No one ever has, and the mystery of it has attracted tons of people to test out the machine for themselves. It’s also pretty interesting to note that the prices for the sodas have risen over time, recently being from 55 cents to 75. I guess ghost machines have to pay the bills somehow.

I’ve seen this!

US Government Introduces Pollinator Action Plan To Save Honey Bees

by samzenpus
An anonymous reader writes The White House has announced a federal strategy to reverse a decline in the number of honeybees and other pollinators in the United States. Obama has directed federal agencies to use research, land management, education and public/private partnerships to advance honeybee and other pollinator health and habitats. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Agriculture Department will lead a multi-agency task force to develop a pollinator health strategy and action plan within six months. As part of the plan, the USDA announced $8 million in funding for farmers and ranchers in five states who establish new habitats for honeybee populations.

Newswire: A middle schooler’s Futurama project shut down trains across Connecticut

by Dan Selcke

always mooninite new england transit systems

Most public transit users know the pain of standing on a train platform or at a bus stop, arms crossed in silent consternation as they wonder what could be causing the freaking holdup. Are the workers on strike? Did someone die? Are the trains running on the Sunday schedule for some reason? Wait, is it Sunday?

Most riders must continue their lives without ever getting any answers, but that’s not the case for commuters on the Metro-North line in Southwestern Connecticut, who got to arrive at work this past Friday and tell their bosses that they were late because someone left a makeshift clock shaped like Futurama’s Bender above the train tracks that morning. The Stamford Advocate even tweeted this photo for proof:

A Public Works Department employee spotted the wooden clock around 5:30 a.m. on the Unquowa Road bridge, which is built directly above a ...

lifeworkfun:

Dr Joan Higginbotham the second Black Woman to become an astronaut.

Via Wikipedia:

Joan Elizabeth Higginbotham (born August 3, 1964) is an American engineer and a former NASA astronaut. She flew aboard Space Shuttle Discoverymission STS-116 as a mission specialist.[2]

Higginbotham began her career in 1987 at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida, as a Payload Electrical Engineer in the Electrical and Telecommunications Systems Division.[2][3] Within six months she became the lead for the Orbiter Experiments (OEX) on OV-102, the Space Shuttle Columbia. She later worked on the Shuttle payload bay reconfiguration for all Shuttle missions and conducted electrical compatibility tests for all payloads flown aboard the Shuttle. She was also tasked by KSC management to undertake several special assignments where she served as the Executive Staff Assistant to the Director of Shuttle Operations and Management, led a team of engineers in performing critical analysis for the Space Shuttle flow in support of a simulation model tool, and worked on an interactive display detailing the Space Shuttle processing procedures at Spaceport USA (Kennedy Space Center’s Visitors Center). Higginbotham then served as backup orbiter project engineer for OV-104, Space Shuttle Atlantis, where she participated in the integration of the orbiter docking station (ODS) into the space shuttle used during Shuttle/Mir docking missions. Two years later, she was promoted to lead orbiter project engineer for OV-102, Space Shuttle Columbia. In this position, she held the technical lead government engineering position in the firing room where she supported and managed the integration of vehicle testing and troubleshooting. She actively participated in 53 space shuttle launches during her 9-year tenure at Kennedy Space Center.

Selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in April 1996, Higginbotham reported to the Johnson Space Center in August 1996. Since that time, she had been assigned technical duties in the Payloads & Habitability Branch, the Shuttle Avionics & Integration Laboratory (SAIL), the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Operations (Ops) Support Branch, where she tested various modules of the International Space Station for operability, compatibility, and functionality prior to launch, the Astronaut Office CAPCOM (Capsule Communicator) Branch in the startup and support of numerous space station missions and space shuttle missions, the Robotics Branch, and Lead for the International Space Station Systems Crew Interfaces Section.

Higginbotham logged over 308 hours in space during her mission with the crew of STS-116 where her primary task was to operate the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS). Higginbotham took a scarf for the Houston Dynamo on board with her during her mission.[4]

Higginbotham was originally assigned to the crew of STS-126 targeted for launch in September 2008.[5][6] On November 21, 2007, NASA announced a change in the crew manifest, due to Higginbotham’s decision to leave NASA to take a job in the private sector.[7] Donald Pettit replaced Higginbotham for STS-126.[8]

Awards and Honors[edit]

In 2007, Higginbotham received the Adler Planetarium Women in Space Science Award.

  • NASA Exceptional Service Medal
  • Group Award for achievements related to the flight of STS-26 (the first shuttle flight after the Challenger disaster)
  • Commendation of Merit for Service to the Department of Defense Missions
  • Black Rose Award (2007) awarded by the (League of Black Women) for contribution to gender equality
