You have until August 25th to sound off on Comcast's takeover of Time Warner Cable

Comcast's proposed acquisition of Time Warner is, to put it lightly, controversial. The $45.2 billion all-stock transaction would extend Comcast's already substantial swaths of subscriber territory even farther, an idea that's incensed Senator Al Franken and a former FCC commissioner, among others. Now it's the public's turn to weigh in.
The FCC is starting its 180-day review of the deal today
The FCC is starting its 180-day review of the deal today, and as part of the process, the agency is taking public comments. The window to submit comments opens today and closes August 25th. Comments can be made through the FCC's Electronic Comment Filing System.
Comcast and TWC are already the two largest cable and internet providers in the business. Although they don't currently compete directly in any areas, combined they would operate in 43 of the top 50 US markets, and fears have been raised that the deal will make Comcast unreasonably powerful.
Comcast has already made its case for the takeover, arguing that the deal isn't anti-competition and would give consumers more reliable service, though critics say Comcast is exaggerating the competition and would become far too large if the merger goes forward. When the takeover was first announced, Comcast downplayed the regulatory hurdles. In a statement released today, the company said: "Of course, we fully expect a robust debate, and that's what the FCC process is for. But we believe that once all the facts are in the record, it will show the significant advantages that bringing these companies together will bring."

Gaza is about 25 miles long and 4 miles wide, with a population of 1.7 million crammed into that tiny space. It is under Israeli occupation and Israeli siege. Hospitals estimate they will run out of resources to treat the wounded in about two days. Electricity is intermittent. Gaza has no army, air force or navy. 'On January 30, 1989, a man wielding a .357 magnum revolver stormed into a Domino’s in Atlanta, Georgia and took two employees hostage. For five hours, he engaged in a standoff with police, all the while ordering his hostages to make him pizzas. Before the police could negotiate with his demands ($100,000, a getaway car, and a copy of The Widow’s Son -- a novel about Freemasons), the two employees escaped. In the ensuing chaos, the captor fired two gunshots into the establishment’s ceiling, was forcefully apprehended, and received charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault, and theft by extortion.
The assailant, a 22-year-old named Kenneth Lamar Noid, was apparently upset about the chain’s new mascot. A police officer on the scene later revealed that Noid had “an ongoing feud in his mind with the owner of Domino’s Pizza about the Noid commercials,” and thought the advertisements had specifically made fun of him. A headline the following morning in the Boca Raton News sparked a talk show frenzy: “Domino’s Hostages Couldn’t Avoid the Noid This Time.”'

A neat little map/infographic accompanying an interesting article in the Washington Post about Amtrak’s inability to actually get people places on-time. Well, that’s what happens when you don’t own most of your track and freight trains get priority… but I digress.
The map does a good job at presenting the information in an interesting manner: the use of green to differentiate between “vaguely acceptable performance” and the varying shades of “are we ever going to get there?” purple is particularly nice.
However, the map does show one of the pitfalls of placing diagrammatic route lines onto a geographical background. The western terminus of the Missouri River Runner is shown correctly as Kansas City, MO, which the Southwest Chief also runs through. However, the 45-degree angle imposed on the Southwest Chief as it leaves Chicago means that it misses Kansas City by a considerable distance (by roughly half the state of Missouri, actually!). Whoops!
I’d also argue that the Texas Eagle should really only be shown from Chicago to San Antonio, as the Los Angeles section is really provided via a connection to the Sunset Limited at San Antonio (as shown on my own subway map-style poster of Amtrak routes).

A registered sex offender, Kramer set up a Twitter account under his real name in 2011, but didn’t do much with it until a couple of weeks ago, when he suddenly became active and began following people — including a 14-year-old girl. His Google+ page also shows a connection with the then-14-year-old boy he was charged with molesting. Kramer lists his address as Brooklyn on his social media accounts, but he apparently is still in Georgia. The Gwinnett County district attorney is investigating; a violation of the plea agreement could result in a 60-year prison sentence, 20 years for each of the three counts of child molestation.'

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Lucy Griffiths is leaving NBC’s Constantine.
The announcement came today after the show’s decision to move in a different direction creatively and not include Griffiths’ character Liv. Instead of recasting the role, NBC’s version of Hellblazer will instead focus on Zed, a former lover of Constantine in the books. An actress for Zed has not been cast yet, but the character will reportedly appear in early episodes of the series.
