The U.S. Centers for Disease control have shut down their flu and anthrax labs, citing "accidents." Over the past month, hundreds of C.D.C. employees have been exposed to potentially deadly anthrax and H1N1 flu strains due to flubbed safety measures and sample contamination.

Attention Millennials: There’s a New Website Streaming Old Nick Shows - After these messages, we'll be right back.

by Susana Polo

Screen Shot 2014-07-11 at 2.59.10 PM

And you better get in here quick just in case something happens to it. NickReboot.com does not appear to be an official classic Nickelodeon streaming site (much as we wish that were a thing), at least, judging by some of the stuff on their about page.

We are a non-commercial and non-profit website… All streamed content, programming (original and syndicated), characters, related properties, animation, brands, and production are copyright of their respective owners and companies. nick reboot operates strictly under the doctrine of “fair use” as codified in section 107 of the copyright law.

In further efforts to protect themselves from the copyright hammer, you can’t pick your views on Nick Reboot: just tune in to the livestream of whatever is randomly playing from their selection. For example, above, KaBlam!, but also including Tiny Tunes, SpongeBob, Figure it Out, and Hey Arnold! But it pays not to count on such a thing being overlooked by a large media conglomerate, so check it out while you can!

Man, I forgot how good the end theme to Hey Arnold! is.

Newswire: David Duchovny wrote a kids’ book about a cow who brings peace to Israel and Palestine

by Katie Rife

Now that Californication is over and he’s free of that sex addiction, David Duchovny has some extra time on his hands. And so, like many celebrities do when they’re between projects, he’s venturing into the world of children’s publishing. But Duchovny’s book isn’t your typical gentle tale of ballerina mice or magic galoshes or whatever; instead, he’s using his celebrity soapbox to weigh in on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

The book is called Holy Cow: A Modern Day Fairy Tale, and earlier this year Duchovny told Rolling Stone that “it’s a fable, like Animal Farm or Charlotte’s Web.” The plot revolves around a cow named Elsie Bovary who teams up with a Jewish pig named Shalom and Tom—a turkey with an iPhone—to travel the world and bring peace to the Middle East. Here’s how the official description characterizes this ...

Business Pogs, A Website That Sells Milk Caps With Name and Contact Information Printed on Them Like Business Cards

by Rollin Bishop

Business Pogs is a website that sells milk caps with name and contact information printed on them like business cards. The entire endeavor is an appeal to the 1990s — a time where the game of pogs peaked in popularity. Users can opt to instead include a QR code on their pogs. It’s unclear whether the site still sells pogs, but at one time it allowed orders of up to 1,000 pogs.

This is a real product and real site!
These are the coolest things out on the market right now. Each one is hand made with your contact on the back of real authentic original milk caps from the 90′s. This is the perfect way to get noticed, a great ice breaker.

Church of England May Soon Allow Female Bishops - Stain glassed ceilings, your end is nigh.

by Carolyn Cox

4325856235_f4cc88e92d_z

This Monday the Church of England’s General Synod may pass a vote which would see the Church welcome its first female bishops by the end of the year–possible progress that Queen Elizabeth’s Chaplain Rose Hudson-Wilkin says would be “seismic.”

This isn’t the first time that members of the Church like Wilkin (who became a vicar when women were first ordained in 1994) have hoped for a massive change in hierarchy–a previous proposal was rejected by conservative Anglicans in 2012. Speaking to the AFP, Wilkin explained beautifully how a positive outcome on Monday would benefit everyone who feels called to the cloth.

This has been on the agenda of the Church since the 1920s, from the time of the suffragettes when women were saying actually, we’re human beings, we don’t want to be patted on the head and told: ‘There dear, you’ll be alright doing the flowers or making the cups of tea’. We have gifts and skills and abilities and we want what we have to be placed on the table as well. Women make up perhaps just over half the population and I think that it is rather out of date to have a major institution like the Church of England that is still run by an all-male group. There is talk of the feminisation of the church, which is so ridiculous because women have always been at the helm [...] They’re the wheels that make everything happen.

Wilkin’s frustrations will likely resonate with women in secular male-dominated organizations as well (looking at you, Facebook and Google). Regardless of your faith or lack thereof, professions that honor traditions based off archaic gender biases clearly deserve a good shake-up.

Women can already be ordained as Anglican bishops in the U.S., Australia, and Canada. Here’s hoping the Church of England will follow suit next week.

Newswire: Dr. Dre’s starter mansion is for sale

by Katie Rife

Now that Dr. Dre is richer than God and can buy any house he wants (with the exception of maybe Buckingham Palace), he’s selling his starter mansion, so some poor, regular rich bastard can buy it. Dre is moving to the palatial Brentwood estate he recently bought from Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen, meaning his West Hollywood home is now officially on the market. The house, which is listed for the reasonable-for-a-billionaire price of $35 million, sits atop Doheny Drive above Sunset Boulevard and features an infinity pool, a spa, a wine cellar, a built-in barbecue, a guest house, a five-car garage, and probably lots of little weed nuggets Dre stashed, then forgot about.

NEW PRODUCT – 2.8″ TFT Touch Shield for Arduino w/Capacitive Touch

NEW PRODUCT – 2.8″ TFT Touch Shield for Arduino w/Capacitive Touch

NewImage

Add some sizzle to your Arduino project with a beautiful large touchscreen display shield with built in microSD card connection and a capacitive touchscreen. This TFT display is big (2.8″ diagonal) bright (4 white-LED backlight) and colorful (18-bit 262,000 different shades)! 240×320 pixels with individual pixel control. It has way more resolution than a black and white 128×64 display. As a bonus, this display has a capacitive touchscreen attached to it already, so you can detect finger presses anywhere on the screen.

This shield is the capacitive version as opposed to the resistive touchscreen we also sell. This touchscreen doesn’t require pressing down on the screen with a stylus, and has a nice glossy glass cover. It is a single-touch display.

This shield uses SPI for the display and SD card and is easier to use with UNO, Mega & Leonardo Arduino’s. The capacitive touchscreen controller uses I2C but you can share the I2C bus with other I2C devices.

NewImage

The shield is fully assembled, tested and ready to go. No wiring, no soldering! Simply plug it in and load up our library – you’ll have it running in under 10 minutes! Works best with any classic Arduino (UNO/Duemilanove/Diecimila). Solder three jumpers and you can use it at full speed on a Leonardo or Mega as well.

This display shield has a controller built into it with RAM buffering, so that almost no work is done by the microcontroller. This shield needs fewer pins than our v1 shield, so you can connect more sensors, buttons and LEDs: 5 SPI pins for the display, 2 shared I2C pins for the touchscreen controller and another pin for uSD card if you want to read images off of it.

NewImage

Of course, we wouldn’t just leave you with a datasheet and a “good luck!” – we’ve written a full open source graphics library that can draw pixels, lines, rectangles, circles and text. We also have a touch screen library that detects x, y and z (pressure) and example code to demonstrate all of it. The code is written for Arduino but can be easily ported to your favorite microcontroller!

First Release of LibreSSL Portable Is Available

by Soulskill
ConstantineM writes: It has finally happened. Bob Beck of The OpenBSD Foundation has just announced that the first release of LibreSSL portable is now available, and can be found in the LibreSSL directory of your favourite OpenBSD mirror. libressl-2.0.0.tar.gz has been tested to build on various versions of Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X and FreeBSD. This is intended to be an initial portable release of OpenBSD's libressl to allow the community to start using it and providing feedback, and has been done to address the issue of incorrect portable versions being attempted by third-parties. Support for additional platforms will be added as time and resources permit.

"Internet's Own Boy" Briefly Knocked Off YouTube With Bogus DMCA Claim

by timothy
An anonymous reader writes "In a bitter irony, a documentary celebrating Aaron Swartz, the late Internet activist who helped create the Creative Commons, has been taken down from YouTube by a misguided copyright claim." From the article: [O]ne of the dark sides of how copyright is enforced on the Internet is that sites that don't actually infringe are sometimes mistakenly swept up in rightsholders' takedown notices, which are frequently automated. Visitors who tried to watch The Internet's Own Boy on YouTube Friday were greeted by the message, "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Remove Your Media LLC," a reference to a company that specializes in sending copyright takedowns in accordance with the law that governs them, the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA). It's not clear who made the claim, but that's not the point—as activists are all too aware, false copyright claims can can knock legitimate content offline.

Lyft's New York Launch Halted By Restraining Order

by timothy
Forbes reports that Lyft's planned expansion into the New York market has been delayed by a restraining order. The article explains that State officials had asked Lyft to delay its launch. When Lyft refused, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office filed a temporary restraining order against the startup Friday morning to prevent its launch. Other statements said that the restraining order had been granted, though Simpson said that was untrue. Lyft and officials will reconvene in court Monday for a hearing. Lyft will not launch until it has reached an agreement with the city, Simpson said. Since Monday, when Lyft announced it was planning to launch in the two boroughs [of Queens and Brooklyn], the app has faced criticism from city officials. The taxi and limousine commission declared the app 'unauthorized' and said its riders were at risk and its drivers could be cited and fined if they were caught using it. Lyft seems to to have left riders mostly unscathed in Boston, where it's been operating since early last year, and in numerous other cities. Also at Ars Technica.

@CongressEdits tells you when Congress is changing Wikipedia

by Colin Lecher

The US Congress has made enough anonymous, occasionally controversial edits to Wikipedia that the changes have warranted their own Wikipedia page. Now a new automated Twitter tattletale, @congressedits, is posting every one of the edits made from the Senate and House.

Wikipedia allows you to view edits by IP address; the congressional IP addresses are public. Inspired by a similar bot set up for the UK Parliament, web developer Ed Summers created @congressedits, which automatically searches for edits made by the IP addresses and tweets a link to the changes.

The account launched this week, and so far it's turned up more inexplicable edits than political impropriety. Following an encounter between President Barack Obama and a man wearing a horse mask, the "horse head mask" Wiki, dedicated to cataloguing the meme, was updated to reflect the meeting.

Even better, someone working from one of the IPs made a grammatical change to the plot of the dance movie Step Up 3D.

Of course, it's not possible to say who, exactly, made the edits. And if members of Congress know they're being monitored, they may be wary of making changes at all during work hours. Summers, in a blog post introducing the project, says that's not his goal. Instead, he hopes the project encourages members of Congress to make important edits, and to make them under real names. More national history, less Step Up 3D.

Getting White Men to Open Up

Diversity initiatives tend to — fairly or unfairly — have a bad rap among white males in the workplace. Many worry these programs serve nothing more than to paint a big “X” on their backs as insensitive oppressors, while others just consider them a waste of time.

(Editor’s note: A new survey from Deloitte University Leadership Center for Inclusion finds 50 percent of straight, white male respondents report “hiding their authentic selves on the job.”)

But with the nation’s workplaces growing ever-more diverse, yet many women and minorities nonetheless reporting they still feel excluded (although a recent story by my colleague Kristen Frasch appears to rebut some of this), HR clearly isn’t serving the organization’s best interests by choosing to simply do nothing.

Texas shooting suspect collapses twice in court

firehose

the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun

Haskell had been jailed in 2008 on charges of assault and domestic violence in Logan, Utah. Those charges were dismissed as part of a plea deal, according to Logan authorities. Last year, Haskell was served with a protective order from his ex-wife. It was dismissed after they filed for divorce, court records show.

Haskell's mother also had reported an argument with her son July 2 at her home in San Marcos, California, during which he physically restrained her by taping her to a chair when she tried to leave the house to call for help, according to San Diego County court documents.

"He told me he was going to kill me, my family and any officer who stops him," Karla Haskell told a judge who issued a restraining order against her son the following day. A hearing in the case had been set for July 25.

Court documents also show Haskell's sister, Chandra, 40, obtained a similar order against him last year for attacking her when she objected to him screaming at his mother and throwing her to the ground. Chandra Haskell said her brother was "in the middle of a messy divorce, and his wife is accusing him of domestic violence."

"I am scared that if Ronald remains in the home, he will harm me again," she said in her request for a domestic violence restraining order.

The New Normal: 25 Percent of Pending Sales Don’t Close

by Timothy Ellis (The Tim)
firehose

via Bunker.jordan

Let’s take a look a the latest data on pending sales volume versus closed sales volume.

For this series I roll the pending sales and closed sales data up by quarter, with pending sales offset by one month. In other words, the second quarter numbers below represent pending sales from March, April, and May and closed sales from April, May, and June.

Pending & Closed Sales of King Co. SFH

As of the second quarter, one in four pending sales (25.2 percent) were still failing to ever show up in the closed sales numbers.

With the housing market as hot as it has been for most of the last year and a half, I had been expecting this number to shrink down to closer to 10 percent, but it has instead actually risen since this same time last year, when 23.8 percent of pending sales failed to close.

Apparently one in four pending sales falling out of contract for one reason or another has become the new normal for the housing market. This is likely due to a combination of various factors, including the NWMLS’ redefinition of “pending” in July 2008 as well as buyers simply becoming a lot more picky.

This is good news for buyers, since many homes that quickly go pending may end up back on the market, giving buyers a second chance.

It will be interesting to see if this number changes much over the next year, but given how long we’ve seen it at these ~20%+ levels, I’ve become doubtful that we’ll be seeing it drop down to 10 percent any time soon.
