Minnesota asks Vikings not to use Washington mascot name

by Kevin Trahan

ha ha yesssssss

When Washington's football team visits Minnesota in November, there may be no references to Washington's mascot or team name.

The Minnesota Vikings will be playing at the University of Minnesota's stadium for the next two seasons while they build a new field of their own. The transition had gone smoothly, but the university has a new request of the team; don't used the word "Redskins" when Washington comes to town.

From the Minneapolis Star-Tribune:

The University of Minnesota is working with the Minnesota Vikings in an effort to keep the Washington Redskins' name from being used in "promotional and game date materials" during the NFL teams' Nov. 2 game at the school's stadium in Minneapolis, according to an Aug. 1 letter from university President Eric Kaler to U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn

...

"The time for debate has ended - the name of the Washington franchise is clearly an offensive racial slur," McCollum wrote to Wilf. "I urge you, as an NFL team owner, to not remain silent on this matter any longer."

If the Vikings refrained from using the word, they would be the first to not use the Washington mascot name or logo when the team comes to play. The Vikings doing so would be a historic move, and one that would place even more pressure on the Washington organization to change its team name.

Minnesota and the Dakotas — home to many Vikings fans — have a sizable Native American population. This would be the second time a school in the region took a stand against using Native American names for sports teams. The University of North Dakota dropped its "Fighting Sioux" mascot in 2012 after facing pressure from the NCAA, which has been far less tolerant of slurs or references to Native Americans than the NFL.

Microsoft is offering free smartphones to laid-off Chinese Nokia employees who leave peacefully

by Adam Pasick

capitalism~

Former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, in happier days in Beijing.

Closing down factories is no easy task in China, where workers have been known to take managers hostage in order to negotiate a better severance package. Microsoft tried a different tactic with the employees of a Beijing factory that it’s shutting down, as part of the 18,000 layoffs it is carrying out across the former Nokia handset business: A parting gift of the smartphone the workers will no longer be making.

The first 300 workers who volunteered to leave quietly received a Lumia 630 phone (retail price 999 yuan, or about $160), according to a report by the Chinese newspaper First Financial Daily (link in Chinese). The factory once had 2,000 R&D staff and 3,000 factory workers; only 300 will keep their jobs. Hundreds of employees protested at the facility last week, shouting slogans against “Microsoft’s hostile takeover and violent layoffs.”

A Nokia China staff member told the paper that Microsoft “never mentioned the word ‘layoff,’ but encouraged the employees to ‘sever their labor relations.’” One worker said: “Before July 30, people were still waiting to see what to do. But after the phone rewarding came out, we were so disappointed. After August 1, more people are signing the leaving contracts.”

Microsoft is currently under investigation for antitrust violations by Chinese regulators. Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system is a distant third in China’s smartphone market, behind Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, which controls about 85% of the market.

Over 900 Authors Sign Open Letter to Amazon

Over 900 Authors Sign Open Letter to Amazon:
Authors United, the loosely knit group of authors who joined forces to formally ask Amazon to end its sales terms dispute with Hachette Books, is preparing to run a full-page ad in Sunday’s New York Times.

"As writers-most of us not published by Hachette-we feel strongly that no bookseller should block the sale of books or otherwise prevent or discourage customers from ordering or receiving the books they want. It is not right for Amazon to single out a group of authors, who are not involved in the dispute, for selective retaliation. Moreover, by inconveniencing and misleading its own customers with unfair pricing and delayed delivery, Amazon is contradicting its own written promise to be ‘Earth’s most customer-centric company.

"Many of us have supported Amazon since it was a struggling start-up. Our books launched Amazon on the road to selling everything and becoming one of the world’s largest corporations. We have made Amazon many millions of dollars and over the years have contributed so much, free of charge, to the company by way of cooperation, joint promotions, reviews and blogs. This is no way to treat a business partner. Nor is it the right way to treat your friends. Without taking sides on the contractual dispute between Hachette and Amazon, we encourage Amazon in the strongest possible terms to stop harming the livelihood of the authors on whom it has built its business. None of us, neither readers nor authors, benefit when books are taken hostage. (We’re not alone in our plea: the opinion pages of both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, which rarely agree on anything, have roundly condemned Amazon’s corporate behavior.)

"We call on Amazon to resolve its dispute with Hachette without further hurting authors and without blocking or otherwise delaying the sale of books to its customers."

A Colorful Outtake

by Tobias Frere-Jones

These didn’t fit anywhere in the trajectory of In Letters We Trust, my recent presentation at TypeCon 2014. But still, I couldn’t leave them just laying about.

These banknotes were issued by the North African nation of Mauritania between 1974 and 2004, and were printed by the German security firm Giesecke & Devrient. They offer dazzling color and pattern, but also make an excellent example of design for a set. They find the precarious balance of unity and diversity, where each piece has a distinct identity but is unmistakably part of a larger group.

I bought these notes years ago, feeling sure that I would find a use for something this beautiful. There was an idea for a lecture on the design of sets: baseball cards, soup cans, banknotes. That’s been shelved for now, but may return later. Until then, enjoy the images. (Click on each note for lots of detail — big files!)

Metta World Peace's 'new Chinese name' will be great

by David Roth

Consider the photo a hint.

Metta World Peace In China, a story in three acts.

Act I

A declining American basketball player signs a one-year contract with the Sichuan Blue Whales of the Chinese Basketball Association. This is not necessarily a novel thing, in itself.

I'm excited to announce I'm officially a member of the Sichuan Blue Whale Basketball Club! Big season ahead for us! pic.twitter.com/xOmCUW28D5

— mettaworldpeace.com (@MettaWorldPeace) August 4, 2014

Act II

But this declining American basketball player is not like other basketball players. He is different: he plays better defense, is significantly goofier in variously charming ways, many of which involve social media. He is, notably, prone to doing things like changing his name.

New Chinese name coming soon. You guys are going to love it!!!!

— mettaworldpeace.com (@MettaWorldPeace) August 5, 2014

Act III

From China Daily (via Hardwood Paroxysm):

New high-profile import playing for Chinese basketball Association club Sichuan Blue Whales is known as Ron Artest but intends to change his name to "Panda Friend" in honor of his move to China.

World Peace, who is known in China as "Ci Shiping", a literal translation of "Metta World Peace," now plans to name himself after China's giant panda, a precious animal based in Southwest China's Sichuan province, where his new team is also based.

While the recently promoted Blue Whales have only recently been promoted to the CBA from a lower league, the food in Sichuan is extremely delicious. (Ask Kevin Garnett!) And while there are few goofier animals on earth than the panda -- it's basically manatees and Glen "Big Baby" Davis -- the name is appropriate given that the newly minted Panda Friend will be playing his home games near the renowned Chengdu Panda Base. Here is some footage of practice at Chengdu Panda Base:

Is changing his name to "Panda Friend" a strange thing for Metta World Peace to do? It would be a strange thing for, say, Kelsey Grammer to do, yes. But in the context of things that Metta World Peace does, not really. It is certainly far less dangerous or strange than willfully working with Nancy Grace or signing with the New York Knicks. We support Panda Friend in all his endeavors, as always. But maybe especially in this one.

Tinder Is Helping Users Find Puppy Love

by Zoe Henry

via Ibstopher
look at this fucking tumblr meme to ad campign deal

This article originally appeared in Inc.

"Where can dogs go to find someone who will fall in love with them? The same place we go," Tinder announces in a video advertisement for its latest initiative.

Adding an element of social consciousness to its business plan, Tinder has begun using its popular dating app to connect abandoned dogs in New York City with potential owners, TechCrunch reports. The company developed the concept, aptly named "Puppy Love," in partnership with Social Tees, an animal rescue organization, and ad agency BBH's internship program. The app made more than 1,500 matches within 24 hours of its launch on Friday and users have been tweeting largely positive reviews of the project.

Here's how it works: Tinder users swipe through photo profiles of the dogs. If they swipe "yes," a link to the nonprofit that rescued the dog appears with information on how to adopt or volunteer.

The dogs have standard Tinder profiles, with their ages given in human years so they match up with potential owners' preferences. For instance, nine-week-old Vilma says she's 26.

The dogs' profiles, like those of human Tinder users, include tags such as: "Single and ready to mingle!" or "Hickory is active and smart and wants to join you in life's adventures!"

While many users were pleasantly surprised to find that they were matching with puppies, some were confused.

Studies show that having dogs in the workplace can reduce stress levels and ultimately boost your productivity. But there's more than one reason to be an advocate for dogs in business—Tinder suggests that there may now be a way to transform cuteness into profit.

Can your business learn something from the pro-puppy initiative?

Newswire: Mike And Molly’s Billy Gardell will host a Monopoly game show

by Dan Selcke

In news that certainly makes more sense than trying to turn it into a movie directed by Ridley Scott, beloved board game Monopoly will be coming to TV as a game show called Monopoly Millionaires’ Club. What’s more, participants on the show will stand to win real money—so if games of Monopoly seemed heated before, imagine all the little green houses bound to go flying with up to $2.5 million at stake.

Monopoly Millionaires’ Club will be a companion show to an upcoming, multi-state lottery game of the same name. A combined effort of Scientific Games Corporation, participating state lotteries, and human greed, the show will choose contestants from among its live studio audience, which will be made up of people who won said multi-state lottery game. Monopoly will be filmed in Las Vegas, really the only place it could have been filmed.

"We do not know who requested the removal. People should not assume that a subject of an article made the request, since others may have the opportunity to make such a demand for removal," the page reads.

Great Job, Internet!: You too can live the glamorous life of an open mic comic with Comedy Quest

by Katie Rife

The difference between the funny guy at the office and a stand-up comedian is that while people might roll their eyes at Barry’s dad jokes behind his back, audience members feel perfectly entitled to viciously attack stand-ups—generally a sensitive lot to begin with—to their faces every night for years at a time. And for those not brave enough to endure this brutal humiliation in real life, a rough facsimile now exists in the form of Comedy Quest, a free downloadable game created by Australian game developer/animator/comedian Trav Nash.

Created in the point-and-click style of roleplaying classics like Leisure Suit Larry, Comedy Quest allows players to hone their material at open mics (options include “notebook joke,” “dad joke,” and “have you ever noticed?”), hand out gig fliers, and mingle with other aspiring comedians in a desperate attempt to silence their inner demons. WOODn’t You Love A Tiny House On Wheels?

by Andrew M. Odom
firehose

via GN
SAUCIE

Ask anyone who owns a tiny house trailer or an RV or a house on wheels and they can probably tell you exactly when they became enamored with the idea of taking their home wherever they went. For me it was an old Mickey Mouse cartoon. I have since found out its title: Mickey’s Trailer (1938). In fact, before you read any further I encourage you to watch ‘ol Mickey and his friends scoot around a mountain in their wonderfully streamlined camper that has everything from a bathtub to a fully stocked kitchen! While you’re watching check out 1:18 where Goofy is toting the camper with its awnings fully extended. I love that. Nothing like road safety! All that to say almost every person remember the time they became fascinated with homes-on-the-go and since automobiles first gained popularity and became a familiar site on the road (between 1906 and 1913) there became a desire to figure out how to build a house on axles and take it with you. In fact, although the modern touring car had been invented some years earlier, it wasn’t until Panhard et Levassor’s Systéme Panhard was widely license and adopted that recognizable and standardized automobiles were created. This same Panhard specified front-engined, rear-wheel drive, internal combustion engine cars with sliding gear transmissions. Coach vehicles and buckboards were tossed aside and tonneau-covered touring cars took the roads en masse!

During the 1920s Ford ruled the road and it is said that well over 2,000 after market products and accessories could be purchased for them. The Lamsteed Kampkar body was one of those products.

Engineered by Samuel Lambert of the Lambert Pharmaceutical Company (makers of Listerine) the primary reason for its invention was because Lambert himself loved the outdoors and felt like suitable transportation would increase the fun! The dimensions of the Kampkar body were developed so they would match those of the standard Ford chassis and according to ads of the day it only took hours to attach one. What a marvel. The 1921 Kampkar would comfortably seat six adults, provide sleeping accommodations for four, as well as hold blankets, clothing and even food. The Kampkar also had a folding table, a two-burner stove, an eight-gallon water supply, and a camping set in its trunk (consisted of cooking and eating utensils). Best of all? It sold for just $535.

KampKar

1921 Model T Lamsteed Kampkar

The Kampkar and similar modifications as well as the emerging social status of camping spawned further exploration into this new medium of housing. Take for instance Roland and Mary Conklin of Huntington, N.Y. whose bus factory built their house-car in the summer of 1915. One of the first custom made “house-cars”, the Gypsy Van (as it was affectionately called), was a 25-foot motor coach built by Conklin’s American Motor Bus Company. It weighed roughly eight tons and was powered by a six-cylinder engine that produced only 60 horsepower. It also used nine forward gears and three reverse gears. Together with their children, a driver, and a butler, Roland and Mary traveled round-trip from New York to San Fran in 1915 on dirt roads, wagon paths, and all other passes that pre-dated modern Interstates.

The early models were still campers at best and served a leisurely purpose more than a permanent one. While they were truly part of tiny house history they had yet to display the features that make them a solid, early predecessor of the tiny house trailer. The idea was catching on though. By 1922 a German construct aptly named Ein fahrbares Landhaus took to the open roads of Europe. Thought little is known about it it clearly shows that the house was more important than the automobile and the tiny house transition began.

Germany 1922: A wheeled country house for a whol e family is shown. The caravan consists of living room, three bedrooms and the kitchen.

Germany 1922: A wheeled country house for a whole family is shown. The caravan consists of living room, three bedrooms and the kitchen.

With its use of wooden siding, windows boxes, raised pitch roof, and even trailer addition, the LandHaus was the ultimate in camp car and tiny house trailer!

The trail more or less runs dry there as America became plagued by events that would overshadow frivolous fun and exploration. From the stock market crash to World War II to the Vietnam years the tiny house – in either house-car or trailer form – faded from the limelight. The 1950s saw a rise in interest in house trailers but only for recreational reasons as soldiers returning from the war were anxious to work hard and play hard. In the 1960s the travel trailer industry seemed to split, creating the RV industry and the motorhome industry. Coupled with the addition of new materials such as fiberglass and plastic the wooden house-car became a thing of the past.

This isn’t to say they didn’t reserve their space in tiny house history though as without them we would have little understanding of how mobility meets domesticity. How does a car marry a house and what will their babies look like? One can only assume that if you build a house, make it mobile by putting it on wheels the end result is…well, (to be continued…)

After 10 years, Rosetta probe catches up with its comet destination

by John Timmer
firehose

YASSSSSSS SPACE MOTHERFUCKERS

Today, the European Space Agency announced that its Rosetta mission successfully arrived at comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko after a 10-year journey. As the probe approached over the past several weeks, it provided greater detail on the oddly shaped comet, which was venting water as its orbit drew it closer to the Sun. Now, at just 100km from the comet's surface, Rosetta is providing detailed images of a truly otherworldly landscape.

67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko occupies an elliptical orbit that takes it from areas beyond Jupiter to somewhere in between Earth and Mars (currently, it's midway between Jupiter and Mars). That presents a significant challenge, since any probe intended to track the comet must roughly match its orbit before approaching—or it would need a prohibitive volume of propellant to slow down. This explains Rosetta's 10-year journey, which included four orbital flybys of Earth and Mars to put it in place for a gradual approach.

Earlier this year, Rosetta successfully woke from hibernation, and it's been imaging the comet during its approach. Early images indicated that 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko has a two-lobed structure that some have compared to a rubber duck, albeit one with an unusually large head. The second lobe, corresponding to the duck's body, is broader and more oblong.

Google buys Emu, an iPhone texting app with a built-in virtual assistant

by Ron Amadeo
firehose

'constantly mined your conversations and offered quick access to relevant tasks'

google was halfway there!

TechCrunch is reporting that Google has acquired "Emu," an innovative texting app that pairs a virtual assistant with your instant messages. Emu was an IM service, but it constantly mined your conversations and offered quick access to relevant tasks. For instance, a message mentioning a restaurant would come with the Yelp score attached. An incoming message asking "dinner Friday?" would show your agenda for Friday night along with a button to add the event to your calendar.

The service basically applied Google Now-style smarts to instant messaging, and it seemed like something right up Google's alley. The company must have thought so, too, resulting in today's acquisition. And Google should be able to solve the biggest downside to Emu, which is having to switch IM services. Google will likely start integrating these features into Google Hangouts, the default IM service on Android devices and Gmail.

Besides restaurant reviews and agendas, the app supported creating reminders from messages, both time and location-based. It would show movie times and even allow you to set restaurant reservations right from a message.

Mercedes-Benz cars confirmed for US version of Mario Kart 8

by Sam Machkovech
firehose

uhh

The Luigi death stare will soon find its way into a line of downloadable Mercedes-Benz cars, including the Silver Arrow and the GLA.

On August 27, the US version of Mario Kart 8 will receive its first substantive patch, and just like the one announced for Japan back in May, its biggest feature will be the addition of Mercedes-Benz cars. Wednesday's news finally confirmed which models will be included, meaning that fans will soon be able to cruise through Rainbow Road behind the steering wheel of the 300 SL Roadster, the Silver Arrow, and the modern GLA wagon.

While most Nintendo game patches typically stick to bug fixes, Mario Kart 8's late-August patch will also make a few noticeable content changes. In particular, the game will begin collecting online race stats and add more viewing options to downloaded highlight videos via Mario Kart TV. Smaller tweaks include allowing players to display racetrack maps on the TV screen when the Wii U GamePad is showing the race itself. Patch notes indicate that online race stability will be addressed as well. (Sadly, the game's lousy, lousy battle mode won't receive any update in this patch.)

Once the patch goes live—which, including the Mercedes cars, will be free—players will be able to participate in a "Mercedes Cup" tournament that will run until September 23. No details for the tournament have been announced, which leads us to believe that it will simply be a Mercedes-only option for online races as opposed to a competition backed by real-world prizes.

Man-Made "Dead Zone" In Gulf of Mexico the Size of Connecticut

by samzenpus
firehose

not news, this has been around for years and years, but still cool/frightening

Taco Cowboy writes Somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico there is a man-made "Dead Zone" the size of the State of Connecticut. Inside that "Dead Zone" the water contains no oxygen, or too little to support normal marine life, especially the bottom dwelling fish and shrimps. The "Dead Zone" measures about 5,000 square miles (13,000 square kilometers) [and] is caused by excess nutrient runoff from farms along the Mississippi River, which empties into the Gulf. The excess nutrients feed algae growth, which consumes oxygen when it works its way to the Gulf bottom. The Gulf dead zone, which fluctuates in size but measured 5,052 square miles this summer, is exceeded only by a similar zone in the Baltic Sea around Finland. The number of dead zones worldwide currently totals more than 550 and has been increasing for decades.

WeTheBuilders: Help Crowdprint a Massive Bust of Ben Franklin by Sept 1st #3DxMuseums #3DThursday #3DPrinting

by Matt

ben franklin thinking of paris in his grave for being mentioned in the same sentence as "massive bust"

Pasted Image 8 6 14 11 22 AM

We shared the teaser last week, but now the new project is on! (In fact, apparently over 1/4 of the parts were grabbed up within the first 24hrs.) The last project, George Sourcington, was briefly installed in our offices after its NY debut at the 3D Print Show.

WeTheBuilders: Help Crowdprint a Massive Bust of Ben Franklin by Sept 1st:

The way it works is that people who own a 3d printer can log in and download one 4″ chunk of a sculpture, 3d print it, and mail it back to Baltimore where they’re all getting glued together. George was made earlier this year and has travelled allover the US to different shows and landmarks. Our next project which just launched today is Distributed Benjamin Franklin is our second super-sized crowdsourced 3D print. Earlier this year, a new site, WeTheBuilders.com was launched by me and a team of 5 other makers at the ArtBytes Hackathon in Baltimore. With the help of 70 makers and their personal 3d printers worldwide, all 110 pieces were 3D printed and mailed to Maryland where they were all glued together to create the one-meter-tall sculpture called George Crowdsourcington.

Pasted Image 8 6 14 11 21 AM

George has been traveling all over the country to over a dozen events. He debuted at the NY 3D Print Show, went to Inside 3D Printing Conference in New York, did a residency at the Adafruit office in Manhattan, traveled to South-by-Southwest, Direct Dimensions, The Baltimore Node Hackerspace, several mini-Maker Faires, 3D/DC, Public Knowledge’s HQ, ConFabulation Symposium and 3D Printed Art Gallery at Prince George’s Community College, the US Science and Engineering Festival in DC, and even visited the Capitol Building and the National Mall. Next month he’ll be at the Silver Spring Maker Faire and World Maker Faire in NY.The hope is that with your help we’ll be able to print all 198 pieces needed to bring Distributed Ben Franklin together in time for the Silver Spring and World Maker Faires.

We the Builders

The parts are available at www.wethebuilders.com and anyone with a 3d printer is free to get started! The project just launched on Monday, August 4th and we’re hoping to get all the parts shipped to Baltimore by September 1st, in time for us to do all the gluing. The model of Ben was sliced up into pieces using netfabb. Any piece which was totally inside the sculpture and a perfect cube was removed, since there’s no need to 3D print that.

Pasted Image 8 6 14 11 22 AM

We The Builders is a fun free project to be a part of. It’s great to use your 3D printed to create something awesome with other makers from all over the world. You can find all the details and get started over at WeTheBuilders.com.
