[News] Taiwanese Government funded pirated version of Settlers of Catan

by Mounrou
Maybe this is not the most suitable forum? I am not sure where this should go though. Feel free to move it if this is not the right place.

I don't seems to see any English media regarding this, so figure I should post a little about this.

A little bits of background:
1) Chinese pirating of boardgames has been popping up lately, as the eastern audience are more exposed to the genre, and the "bite size" easy-to-learn, quick-to-play gameplay fits the modern Asian who are more job-focused and usually don't bother to learn complex rules. Not alot of games bothered, or could afforded, to put out Chinese version of their game, but on the other hand many people now use Chinese printing press for printing purposes. So some less morally inclined printing press might have grabbed fan-translation of rules online and ran afterhour prints, or others might just just do straight sacn-and-copy of their own. In the last few years when I went back to Hong Kong I've seen more (though still a fairly small number) boxes of games that never had official Chinese versions on sale in flea markets and openair markets, and there'll probably be more in the future.

2) "Gameducation" or "Edutainment" has lately seems to be a fad in Taiwan, many people in the eduaction sector talked about it, many people in the Taiwanese boardgame scene have idea on it. But because it is "Real Life as you know it" :o , the two side doesn't seems to be connected in any effective ways. but Taiwanese government do have a funding system of their own.

And from that funding system came "The Old City Boardgame - Brother Tiger's coming to town". (Chinese: 舊城桌上遊戲-阿虎進城了)

So, the news:

The Chinese news on it's official first day of sale, at July 31st or six days ago:
"Play boardgame and learn history!""Brother Tiger's coming to town"" released."
http://news.e2.com.tw/gb/2014-7/6369431.htm (Chinese)

Funded by the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan, it was designed to teach student about the early history of South Taiwan, the settlement and developments, where players trade and compete to build the wealthiest tribe.

It had been in playtest by various people in schools, for quite a long time before, so this is not a spur of the moment thing, mind you.

And schools rave about it, at least on the news I can find. Saying it is easy to play, and fun, and "educational".

And now that they published it, and that the boardgame scene and finally get a hold of it, the collective reaction seems to be:

"It's a 99% plagiarisation of (you know it) Settlers of Catan."

"Shame! South Taiwan's newest education tool is a plagiarisation of famous boardgame"
http://www.appledaily.com.tw/realtim...140805/446196/ (Also in Chinese)
August 5th, or 2 days ago.

So it turns out every single thing inside the boardgame, the general layout of the manual, except for the names of the terrain and resources, are complete plagiarisation. Even the sample pictures in the manual came from Catan's manual.

Okay, maybe one more difference: In this Chinese version, you only need 8 points to win.

That's it.

They already got government funding for designing it.
Theyr are already selling it.
They never mentioned a single word about Catan until now, when they got called on it.

And the designer's response is:
"We just had a meeting with Catan's company yesterday (makes that around August 4th, 4 days after they published) and confirm corporation in the future to publish more edutainment games on South Taiwan's history."

=========================================================

That's the news above.

Why do I post this?

To be honest, I am not quiet sure myself.

Maybe because we all kinda understand how hard it is for boardgame designers to make something that gets appreciation from the general public. So many people put in honest times, money, and creativity, making things that probably won't make them money 99% of their times.

And then some people just copy others, and they got government funding, legup in pushing their products (you know, the kind that comes with government funding......), praises and the dough, and in the future even a potential acceptance of the people they plagiarise?

I might not be one of those hard-working gamesmiths, but as a gamer, I feel it...... Kinda unfair?

To be honest, I am just some guy who read the news on line. I have no idea what had happened backstage. I am not even Taiwanese.

It's just that, I kinda feel that we should reward hard workers, and not those who are...... "otherwise".

But in "Real life as we know it", it just seems that people who put in the least effort reap the most reward.

A shame really, but what can you do about it, right? :(

Though I don't know if there is an Official Chinese version of Catan, but I am pretty sure that if there's one, there will be customers.

Or so I hope.

New Tool Lets You Choose Baby Names Based on Availability of that Name as a Domain - How babby is named?

by Glen Tickle

Awesome Baby Name

Naming a baby can be hard, and there are a lot of factors to consider. Should you name the child after family? How will other kids use the name to tease your kid? Is your baby’s name available as an Internet domain name. That last one’s probably not a thing many parents consider, but now there’s an online tool that suggests baby names based on domain availability.

AwesomeBabyName.com works by allowing users to input their last name and to select the gender (or non-gender “Whatever” option) of the impending child. It then spits back a few suggestions of names with available domains.

Remington Skywalker

They also link directly to a site where you can buy those domain, but if you don’t like any of the first 10 suggestions (Not that anyone wouldn’t like Remington Skywalker) you can pay $9 for more suggestions $3 for more suggestions. (They’re on sale at the moment.)

There are countless baby-naming books and websites out there already, but AwesomeBabyName.com is trying to fill a need I’m not sure anyone actually has. It’s easy enough to just type potential baby names into a domain site’s search engine to see what’s available. Maybe they could add a feature that lets you add “Danger” as the middle name to see if that’s available?

City of London Police Take Down Proxy Service Over Piracy Concerns

by samzenpus
Mr_Silver writes TorrentFreak is reporting that the City of London Police (a private police force in government-backed livery with an authority that does not go beyond the corporate-controlled City of London area — so not to be confused with the Metropolitan Police) has seized control of a number of domains including Immunicity, a general proxy server that was set up as a censorship circumvention tool. This appears to be their next step after placing banner adverts on websites.

Snowden Granted 3 More Years of Russian Residency

by timothy
SiggyRadiation writes Edward Snowden is allowed to stay in Russia for three more years. According to the NYPost:"His lawyer, Analtoly Kucherena, was quoted by Russian news agencies on Thursday as saying Snowden now has been granted residency for three more years, but that he had not been granted political asylum. That status, which would allow him to stay in Russia permanently, must be decided by a separate procedure, Kucherena said, but didn't say whether Snowden is seeking it." The question that remains, of course, is did the Russians use this as leverage over him to get to more information or influence him? Or is the positive PR in itself enough for the Russians in the current climate of tensions and economic sanctions relating to the Ukraine crisis?"

Parallax Propeller 1 P8X32A is Open Source #oshw @parallaxinc

Propeller 1 Open Source. Full press release below -

Parallax Propeller Multicore Microcontroller Released as Open Source Design

Rocklin, CA – Parallax Inc. has released their source code design files for the Propeller 1 (P8X32A) multicore microcontroller among the 13,000+ attendees of the DEF CON 22 Conference in Las Vegas where their chip is also featured on the conference’s electronic badge. Parallax has long-believed in openly sharing product designs for the benefit of its users and the development community. CEO Ken Gracey anticipates this release will inspire developers the same way Parallax founder Chip Gracey was motivated when he taught himself to program computer systems in the early 1980s.

Hobbyists, engineers, and students may now view and modify the Propeller Verilog design files by loading them into low-cost field programmable gate array (FPGA) development boards. The design was released under the GNU General Public License v3.0.

With the chip’s source code being available, any developer may discover what they need to know about the design. The open release provides a way for developers who have requested more pins, memory or other architectural improvements to make their own version to run on an FPGA. Universities who have requested access to the design files for their engineering programs will now have them.

The Propeller multicore microcontroller is used in developing technologies where multiple sensors, user interface systems, and output devices such as motors must be managed simultaneously. Some primary applications for Parallax’s chip include flight controllers in unmanned aerial vehicles, 3D printing, solar monitoring systems, environmental data collection, theatrical lighting and sound control, and medical devices.

The decision to go open-source has positive implications for Parallax’s next design: the Propeller 2. In recent years the community contributed the compilers, multi-platform programming tools and languages for the Propeller 1. Several of the Propeller 2 features were contributed and designed by community members running binary images of the chip in an FPGA. Though a small supplier in the semiconductor industry, the high quality of Parallax’s products can be attributed, in part, to their close relationship with the development community.

For more information on Parallax’s open source release of the Propeller P8X32A, visit www.parallax.com. ###

The Five Commandments of BURGER WEEK

by Chris Onstad
Portland Burger Week is Here Again! by Chris Onstad

Portland Mercury Promotion

Last year's Burger Week saw 13 local restaurants sell well over 20,000 $5 burgers. Chefs strove to outdo one another, offering towering, even outlandish creations that would normally have cost two or three times that much. You, the customer, were treated to awesome food at a ridiculous price.

This year, we have 20 participating restaurants, and we've prepared them for the mayhem. The burgers are once again $5, and the kitchens know you're coming. Visit portlandburgerweek.com for large, gastrographic (a pretty bad play on pornographic, sorry), full-color pics of these charred, juicy beauties.

That said, Burger Week creates such strong, lusty, even insane feelings, that we decided it needed its own little religion-type screed. Please read on.

1. THEY WILL RUN OUT

These restaurants nearly got demolished last year. The top performers sold nearly 2,500 burgers during Burger Week 2013. They are getting hit like never in their histories. So, if a place runs out toward the end of a shift, take it like a man: go back the next day, earlier, order your burger, and thank them for working their asses off to do this for you. Do Not Be A Shit To Our Restaurants.

2. THERE WILL BE WAITS

People have been talking about Burger Week 2014 for weeks. It has become an institution in a single year. Don't be surprised if restaurants have waits. In fact, be surprised if they don't.

3. YOU WILL TIP

$5 brings out the cheap in all of us, but really, you're getting a $10-$15 burger (many restaurants go way overboard with ingredients, trying to outdo each other), so please tip at least 20%. The people who are serving you are working harder during Burger Week than at any other point in the year. A kind word will also be welcome—these people are our friends and neighbors.

4. YOU REALLY SHOULD BUY A DRINK AND/OR OTHER FOODS

While extra purchases are not a requirement, I think it says something good about you if you show a little love to a restaurant going above and beyond to bring you an awesome burger. Pick up some fries and a pint of Widmer, or a shot of Kentucky Fire! You'll enjoy yourself more.

5. CHECK TWITTER, FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM

Restaurants are encouraged to post their waits and remaining burgers for the day. Go to portlandburgerweek.com and don't forget to tag your Instagram photos and tweets with #portlandburgerweek

THANK YOU

A huge and heartfelt thanks to our sponsors! Once again the wonderful and always-supportive Nicky USA (meats), as well as ever-generous Widmer Brothers Brewing (beer), and now newcomer Jim Beam Kentucky Fire (delicious cinnamon whiskey)!

China Bans iPad, MacBook Pro, Other Apple Products For Government Use

by timothy
MojoKid (1002251) writes "China seems to be on a mission to isolate itself from the world, at least in terms of technology. After banning Windows 8 on government PCs and raiding several of Microsoft's offices in China as part of an anti-trust investigation, Chinese officials have now prohibited purchase of several Apple products for government use. The list of banned Apple products include the iPad, iPad Mini, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and half a dozen other items, all of which were left off of a final government procurement list distributed in July. This is a potentially big hit to Apple, which generated around 16 percent of its $37.4 billion in revenue last quarter from China. Apple saw its iPad sales jump 51 percent and Mac sales boosted 39 percent in China."

Twitch implements copyrighted music muting on VoDs. It goes wrong IMMEDIATELY.

by Matt.Ceb
firehose

"dota 2 international vods from valve, the creator of dota 2, were muted because it contains dota 2 music"

lolololololol

Here's the Twitch press release: http://blog.twitch.tv/2014/08/3136/

Here's two things that already went wrong:

https://twitter.com/emitans/status/497152749906456576 - "dota 2 international vods were muted streams from valve, the creator of dota 2, were muted because it contains dota 2 music"

It also muted one of Twitch's own Gamescom 2014 pre-streams from July.

Seeing as how many problems /STILL EXIST/ with the Youtube auto-strikes (Like one company issuing takedown notices for music they never owned, which some indie game devs (like Mike Bithel) had to actively work against, and which was a long, involved and problematic process for them, even though they did all the music) I'm fairly certain that this will give us much more to laugh at very, very soon.

Legality wise? Yeah. It was inevitable with the current copyright laws which apply to music. Can't fault twitch for covering their ass. Even though their 30-min-chunk-saving (one of the things that makes Twitch VODs as sucky as they are) means that it's harsher than it needs to be.

But it does nothing but strengthen my belief that what we need is an adjustment of copyright laws, with a thorough ass-kicking for the RIAA and other national companies like that, rather than a total DMCA frenzy which is almost always brutally aimed at and used against people who can't fight back, even though they'd have Fair Use on their side.

But still, seeing something backfire THAT quickly is hilarious. I hope that it helps them stepping away from a preemptive, scanning-then-banning approach. Make copyright holders issue requests for blatant violations. Or at the very, very least ask for the rights BEFORE taking the audio track down, to give someone with the actual rights to the music to prevent a muting of their VODs audio track. Like, well, Valve when hosting and promoting a game with music from Valve. ;)

Netflix now has more subscription revenue than HBO

by Zachary M. Seward

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings humble-bragged on Facebook today:

Reed Hastings on Facebook
Tap to expand image

He’s right. (About the financials, at least—Silicon Valley, an HBO sitcom about tech startups, was really bad.) Here’s how HBO’s subscription revenue compares to Netflix’s revenue from subscriptions to its streaming video service:

Tap to expand image

That reflects Netflix’s rapid subscriber growth in recent years. Over the same period, HBO subscribers have been roughly flat in the United States, with modest gains in other countries.

Now for the caveats. First, the comparison to HBO is not exactly apples-to-apples: HBO is a TV channel that also has an on-demand service, and is known primarily for its high-quality original shows; Netflix is an on-demand streaming service (with a declining DVD rentals arm), whose own original shows are a growing but still small part of its business.

Then, as Hastings notes, HBO is still way more profitable. It made $548 million last quarter for its corporate parent Time Warner, compared to Netflix’s $71 million in profit.

HBO also generates additional revenue from licensing its popular shows, and that portion of its business has been growing. It had $274 million in content revenue last quarter, boosted by a deal to license old HBO shows to Netflix’s streaming rival Amazon. That’s small compared to $1.14 billion in HBO subscription revenue, but still significant.

But it’s the ambition to be more like HBO that prompts Netflix to constantly draw the parallel. Netflix has repeatedly called HBO its top competitor. Ted Sarandos, the head of content at Netflix, said in 2013, “The goal is to become HBO faster than HBO can become us.” Hastings last year joked that HBO CEO Richard Plepler’s password for HBO Go, the network’s streaming service, was “Netflix bitch.”

HBO doesn’t welcome the comparisons. Time Warner executives feel that investors undervalue HBO, compared to Netflix. And as a content company, HBO is far ahead, which Hastings alluded to with his comment about Emmy awards.

Idiot Leaves Driver's Seat In Self-Driving Infiniti, On the Highway

by samzenpus
cartechboy writes Self-driving cars are coming, that's nothing new. People are somewhat nervous about this technology, and that's also not news. But it appears self-driving cars are already here, and one idiot was dumb enough to climb out of the driver's seat while his car cruised down the highway. The car in question is a new Infiniti Q50, which has Active Lane Control and adaptive cruise control. Both of which essentially turn the Q50 into an autonomous vehicle while at highway speeds. While impressive, taking yourself out of a position where you can quickly and safely regain control of the car if needed is simply dumb. After watching the video, it's abundantly clear why people should be nervous about autonomous vehicles. It's not the cars and tech we need to worry about, it's idiots like this guy.

CIA’s venture firm security chief: US should buy zero-days, reveal them

by Sean Gallagher
Dan Geer, speaking at Black Hat, outlined a series of policies he believes will help make the Internet more secure.
Sean Gallagher

LAS VEGAS—In a wide-ranging keynote speech at the Black Hat information security conference today, computer security icon Dan Geer gave attendees a sort of personal top 10 list of things that could be done to make the Internet more secure, more resilient, and less of a threat to personal privacy. Among his top policy picks: the US government should move to “corner the market” on security vulnerabilities by paying top dollar for them and then publish them to the world.

Geer is the chief information security officer for In-Q-Tel, the not-for-profit venture capital firm funded by the Central Intelligence Agency to incubate technologies that aid intelligence operations. However, he noted that he was speaking in a private capacity at the event and not as a public official.

Thousands of Twitch videos silenced as streaming site mutes copyrighted audio

"Earlier today, the company announced that full stream archival is being removed"

fuckkkkkkkkkkkk you plus

Game streaming site Twitch has started muting the audio of any video that is detected to include unauthorized audio—which is to say, any video that includes any reasonably mainstream background music.

While Twitch's main purpose is to be a platform for live game streams, which are, for the time being, unaffected, it also has a substantial library of archived broadcasts and highlight clips. These archives and highlights will have their audio muted if they're detected to contain any music owned or controlled by clients of Audible Magic, a music matching and recognition service already used by Vimeo, Facebook, and others. Twitch archives are stored in 30-minute chunks, and if any infringing audio is found in a chunk, the entirety of that section will be muted.

Earlier today, the company announced that full stream archival is being removed, but highlight clips will remain.
