Apple reportedly reaches agreements with Visa, MasterCard, and American Express for iPhone mobile payments
Apple is widely expected to reveal a mobile payments system alongside the iPhone 6 at its press event on September 9th. The system — supposedly designed to take on Google Wallet, Isis, Paypal, and others — would allow you to use your phone to pay for items at the cash register, and it appears Apple's gained a strong ally in its quest. Recode reports that American Express has agreed to "work together" with Apple on the rumored payments system.
The report, which cites sources familiar with the matter, does not go into the nature of the agreement. American Express is one of the major companies Apple will have to make partnerships with if it hopes to make a truly comprehensive and compelling alternative to traditional credit cards. The Information previously reported that Visa had also reached an agreement with Apple.
Nevertheless, it isn't clear that Apple's secured the necessary partnerships to make a system that will accept any credit card. Other systems, such as Google Wallet and wireless carrier-backed Isis, use digital pre-paid credit cards that can be loaded with any other card in order to make purchases — a far cry from true compatibility with all credit cards. It's also unclear how a future iPhone will send transaction data. One rumor suggests Apple will build NFC into its next phone, but we'll find out for sure on September 9th.

TV Club: Doctor Who: “Into The Dalek”
firehose'For maybe the first time ever, the show is too subtle for its own good'
'The Doctor can appear heart(s)less several times in “Into The Dalek,” but his tactics here only differ from those of his predecessors in style, not substance.'
'Capaldi continues to be a massive asset for the show as it rediscovers his identity—he just about pulls off a climax in which he talks to a giant Dalek by directly addressing the camera, which is no small feat—and his Doctor is even more drily confident here than he was in “Deep Breath,” showing a continued flair for sardonic one-liners that are always on the verge of crossing over into outright threat.'
'Jenna Coleman isn’t given the depth of material to play that she got in “Deep Breath,” but she’s charming in her interactions with Sam Anderson’s Danny Pink—a far more natural outlet for her flirtatious side ... it’s hard to come up with a more active move than literally slapping sense into the Doctor, so at least that’s something'
Second adventures are tricky. A Doctor’s debut episode presents its own challenges, but the very fact that the show has a new incarnation to introduce eases the narrative burden. A compelling story is a nice thing to have, but audiences are really there to get to know this new face, and the expected post-regenerative mania means there’s some leeway in establishing precisely who this particular Doctor is going to be. But the second story can’t be about the new Doctor in quite so direct a way, as it’s now time to get back to the business of adventuring through time and space. Indeed, the show can take its shiny new Doctor to literally anywhere and anywhen, so, when presenting a Doctor with the infinite for the first time, the simple act of making a decision and sending him somewhere specific can feel vaguely disappointing. After all ...

Border Collie Hand Puppet Fiercely Guards a Yummy Bone When Real Dogs Try to Steal It Away
Just For Laughs Gags, a comedy group based in Québec, Canada, decided to play a prank in which a border collie hand puppet fiercely guarded a yummy bone when the real dogs tried to steal it away.
We got tired of pranking plain-old humans, so we’re going after canines! They have much better reactions than their owners [humans] anyway.
World's Largest Public Archive of SF And Fantasy Receives $3.5-Million
firehose'from the estate of Jay Kay Klein, who worked in advertising for General Electric and Carrier and had a passion for photography and science fiction. Klein began taking photos of science fiction writers and fans at conventions in the 1940s and kept at it for much of his life. He died in 2012 at 80.
By then he already had donated his $1.4 million photo collection to UCR, largely because of the relationship he had established with Melissa Conway, the library's special collections director.'
UC Riverside professor Nalo Hopkins reported that the library's new administration didn't "seem to appreciate the value of the Eaton Collection or the expertise that goes into it," having driven out staff members and incurring changes to collection policies that reduced the collections holdings, its value to researchers and the community, and "its standing as a world-class archive."

Earlier this month we learned that UC Riverside Library's Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy – the world's largest public reserve of SF/F books and materials – has come under threat by new management. Now, the Eaton Collection is the beneficiary of a $3.5-million gift – the largest ever received by the university's library.

Kevin Durant to stay with Nike over Under Armour, according to report
A report suggests that the swoosh has matched UA's mammoth offer.
Nike has matched Under Armour's mammoth offer to Kevin Durant and believes it will be able to retain Kevin Durant as a marquee endorser, reports Marc Stein and Darren Rovell of ESPN.com. UA had been reported to have offered the reigning NBA MVP as much as $285 million over 10 years to switch from the swoosh to the Baltimore-based apparel company. But ESPN reports that Nike believes its counter-offer with keep Durant with the shoe company he's endorsed his entire NBA career.
As has been noted, the shoe deal would appear to pay Durant more than the Thunder do. KD makes about $20 million per season in NBA salary.
One aspect of interest in the Under Armour dance is that Durant is from Washington, D.C. and will be a free agent in 2016. The Wizards are expected to pursue Durant hard, and having KD's second major employer based in the area could have been a nice asset. That said, it's not as if Nike regularly helps land the Portland Trail Blazers land stars, so it's unclear of UA's corporate proximity to the Wizards would have been relevant.
The ESPN report claims KD's Nike shoe line generated $165 million in revenue last year. Durant pulled out of USA Basketball participation this summer at the last minute, with rumors suggesting he wanted to focus on completing his endorsement deal.
Ray McDonald arrested for domestic violence, per report
firehose"the victim in this alleged incident is pregnant"
"Among the circumstances that would merit a more severe penalty would be a prior incident before joining the NFL, or violence involving a weapon, choking, repeated striking, or when the act is committed against a pregnant woman or in the presence of a child."
"more harsh" probably means 9-12 games; Goodell has never, ever surprised me by being a shithead, so place your bets on 9 games
reminder that, less than a day after announcing the bump from 2 to 6 games for DOMESTIC FUCKING VIOLENCE, a player got a full-season suspension for 2nd-offense non-DUI substance abuse
Ray McDonald will be the first test for the NFL's new domestic violence policy.
San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald was arrested Sunday for felony domestic violence, according to a report by Damian Trujillo of NBC Bay Area. San Jose police have confirmed the arrest to Trujillo. McDonald will be the first player to test the NFL's new domestic violence policy, which could mean that the 49ers lineman will face at least a six-game suspension.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell recently admitted that he was wrong in giving Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice just a two-game suspension for a domestic violence incident involving Rice's now wife, leading the NFL to change its policy on domestic violence. Players will now face a six-game suspension for their first domestic violence incident, following by a lifetime ban for the second.
According to Trujillo, the victim in this alleged incident is pregnant, which could lead to McDonald's potential suspension being more harsh than simply six games. From Goodell's statement on domestic violence earlier in the week:
Among the circumstances that would merit a more severe penalty would be a prior incident before joining the NFL, or violence involving a weapon, choking, repeated striking, or when the act is committed against a pregnant woman or in the presence of a child. A second offense will result in banishment from the NFL; while an individual may petition for reinstatement after one year, there will be no presumption or assurance that the petition will be granted. These disciplinary standards will apply to all NFL personnel.
McDonald has a DUI arrest in his past but hasn't had any off-the-field incidents otherwise. That does not matter with the new policy on domestic violence, however.
The 29-year-old defensive lineman was originally drafted in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft and signed a five-year, $20 million contract extension in 2011.
