“If there is one thing that an atheist movement should stand against (or at least be reflexively suspicious of), it is the erection of cults of personality around individual voices. Most movement atheists will be able to, without breaking stride, list a number of specific examples of religious movements that have gone terribly awry when a single person is placed at their zenith. Atheistic communities are no exception, or at least should not be. If Richard Dawkins is ‘a liability’, it is because we atheists have failed to resist the urge toward celebrity worship. In a perfect world, Dr. Dawkins‘ opinions on evolution would be evaluated and lauded when accurate, and his opinions on other matters would be seen as irrelevant when they are false. The fact that he regularly repeats fairly common bromides about rape culture and xenophobia would be seen, in this better world, as reflective of an incurious mind that speaks more than it thinks. To the extent that this is not the case (many atheists I know have no interest in Dr. Dawkins‘ opinions), it should be seen as a failing of the community to live up to its principles. When people continue to write articles as though it was still 2007 and The God Delusion was still one of the only popular sources for atheist advocacy, it cements the perception that Richard Dawkins is reflective of the atheist movement rather than being simply one voice among many.”

Quote is from Is Richard Dawkins An Asset Or A Liability To Atheism? No. Must…read. Love how he questions the question itself (problem with liability/asset binary), questions the idea that there is “one” atheist movement (nope) and illustrates how similar personality cult in secular space is to it some theist ones. Oh and I’m one of the atheists that has "no interest in Dr. Dawkins‘ opinions." Must read full essay!
(via gradientlair)Plant Host Drone Brings Your Plants To The Sunlight
Plant host drone seeks out sunlight. by Stephenverstraete via instructables
Easy and cheap to make P.H.D.
(Plant host drone)With this you’ll never have to worry that your plant stands in the shades, always the best light for your favourite houseplant!
When you put the Robot in direct sunlight it will not run and he will just sit there and enjoy the sun, but when the day goes by and the sun moves he will follow the sunlight every time the shadow tries to take the upper hand.
When you start her up in the shade he will scout for light and therefore are the collision switches a helpful thing, so he wont get stuck somewhere.-The parts needed to make this marvellous little robot are :
1x 74HC240
1x L293D
3x 1M resistors
2x 1nF capacitors
2x 10uF capacitors
2x SFH 300 photo transistor
2x collision switches
1x pot to host the plant (make sure it doesn’t leak water into the electronics)
and last but not least a recycled toy with 2 electric motors that runs at about 6volt or identical motors and wheels or a 2 motor robot platform. I think you can make this but for under 10$-I gave my robot a nice flesh eating plant and designed the body a bit like a trilobite
And I used the Rp5 platform for this robot. I posted an image of my robot and the schematicsEnjoy!

Thousand-Mile Shadows Cast into Space, Viewed Aboard the International Space Station #ArtTuesday #space

Thousand-Mile Shadows Cast into Space, Viewed Aboard the International Space Station. From Colossal:
One of six astronauts currently on board the International Space Station, geophysicist Alexander Gerst spends much of his free time staring out the window as the world zooms by 205 miles below, camera in-hand.
…One of his favorite things to shoot are the shadows cast by clouds, something that appears surprisingly dramatic from space. Dense cloud formations can create long shadows that stretch for thousands of miles across the Earth’s surface as they eventually disappear into a black horizon. You can see new photos from Gerst daily on Twitter.

DIY Self Watering Planter With 2 Liter Bottle
Make a self watering pot for your plants with recycled bottles. via youtube
This is another 2 liter bottle recycling experiment. I am taking a 2 liter soda bottle and coffee can to make an easier version of my original 2 liter self watering pot. This just might be the easiest DIY self watering container on YouTube.
It lowers water consumption by greatly reducing evaporation. Being a sealed system, it keeps insects out of the water supply, especially mosquitoes! You can also easily check check to see if your plant is rootbound. What other planter lets you check your roots?!
This is not a huge container but is great for mid stage growth of tomatoes and peppers. It can used for growing herbs such as basil, dill, thyme, cilantro, parsley, chives, oregano and sage. I’ve even grown radishes and onions in it! It’s also awesome for growing lettuce! I’m even using it for mid stage growth of a Moringa tree with great success! I’m going to grow strawberries in it next!

More than one in three wild boar in Germany are too radioactive to eat
If you've going to Germany to experience Oktoberfest for beer and sausages this fall, chances are you might want to stay away from the boar while you're there. A new study from the German government, reported by The Telegraph, shows that more than one in three wild boar killed by hunters in the region are too radioactive to be safe for humans to eat.
Since 2012, hunters in the Saxony region of Germany have had to get any wild boar they kill tested for radiation. In one year, the state reports that 297 of 752 boar tested contained more than the safe limit of 600 becquerels of radioactive material caesium-137 per kilogram for human consumption. Some boar tested had radiation levels dozens of times higher than the safe limit.
Some boar had radioactive material dozens of times higher than the safe limit
Saxony is 700 miles from Chernobyl, where a 1986 explosion at a nuclear plant sent radioactive material into the atmosphere. Subsquent rain and wind carried the radioactive material far and wide across Europe.
It's thought that boar are more susceptible to radiation contamination becuase their diet consists of mushrooms and truffles that are buried in the ground and hold radiation longer than other vegetation. As a result of the contaminated meat, the German government has paid out thousands of euros in compensation to hunters, which have to destroy anything that tests as unsafe and cannot sell it for profit.
Even though it has been 28 years since the Chernobyl disaster, The Telegraph points out that experts say the radiation could be around in unsafe levels for another 50 years.

POOL/REUTERS Cee Lo Green, pictured here in a previous court hearing, pleaded no contest Friday in Los Angeles court. Cee Lo Green pleaded no contest Friday to slipping ecstasy to a woman two years ago.
The former "Voice" judge and Gnarls Barkley singer took the no-jail deal under a type of plea that allowed him to deny wrongdoing.
"I plead no contest where I maintain my innocence," Green said in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
Judge Mark Young sentenced him to three years of probation and 360 hours of community service for the felony conviction.
The Grammy winner, whose real name is Thomas DeCarlo Callaway, also has to attend 52 substance abuse therapy sessions, register as a narcotics offender and pay restitution to his unidentified female victim.
The judge also ordered the "Crazy" crooner to refrain from drinking alcohol if his probation officer requests that.
Lawyer Blair Berk sat next to Green with her hand on his back. He wore a pinstriped shirt over dark shorts and dress shoes and donned a pair of sunglasses as he left the courtroom without comment.

Cee Lo Green Enters No Contest Plea In Drug Case
According to prosecutors, Green, 39, "slipped" ecstasy to a 33-year-old woman while the two were dining at a sushi restaurant in July 2012. The woman allegedly recorded Green making reference to the incident in a later conversation, a law enforcement source told the Daily News.
She initially said she believed Green spiked her drink and that the "next thing" she remembered was waking up naked in her hotel room with him.
Prosecutors rejected a felony sexual assault charge in the case.
Berk previously described any physical contact as "consensual."
Green, who rose to fame in the hip hop group Goodie Mob, was ordered to return to court in March for a progress report.

I don't know why this exists. I just know that it does and I am very happy for it:
We already knew Manny Pacquiao loves to sing -- so much so that his vocal talents recently got the Drake parody treatment.
I am utterly baffled by this, yet so, so, so appreciative. Keep singing, Manny.

Where to get CIDER apples in PDX
firehosehey saucie
Every fruit stand, farmers market, and grocery store seem to have the same selection of Apples here (Gala, Gravenstein, Granny Smith, etc) right now, and while different varieties will be coming out over the next few months, I anticipate that the same places will again, for the most part, have the same selection.
My question, directed specifically at those who make cider at home (or otherwise) - where do you source your bittersweat and bittersharp apples? I would really like to find someone around here who has some higher tannin varieties, such as Foxwhelp or Yarlington Mill (as an example, not specifically)
And yes, I have already seen the Orange Pippin site which lists orchards that sell apples, but the list of varieties which they attribute to the local orchards that I have called is not accurate. Oh and since someone is going to say this, I have an app checking craigslist every hour for apples :-)
So cider makers - lets chat!
Append: In case anyone was interested, the two deals I found this weekend are: (Craigslist) Karam Farm & Garden off of HW224 has Gala's @ $.49/lbs for quantities over 20lbs (Craigslist) A farmer from White Salmon,WA working through "Alicia" in Troutdale - Gravenstein's for $20 / 40lbs box
