Sports fan lobbyist fights NFL blackouts, taxpayer-funded stadiums, and Comcast

by Jon Brodkin
David Goodfriend, founder of the Sports Fans Coalition.

Since 1973, the National Football League has prevented local TV stations from broadcasting games when tickets aren’t sold out—and Federal Communications Commission rules enable this decidedly fan-unfriendly policy. The rules are finally close to being overturned, and if they are you can thank David Goodfriend.

Founder of the Sports Fans Coalition, Goodfriend is an attorney and lobbyist with years of experience in government and private industry. He was a Clinton Administration official, a Congressional staffer, legal advisor at the FCC, and executive at Dish Network. The Sports Fans Coalition teamed with four consumer advocacy organizations in 2011 to petition the FCC to stop supporting the NFL’s blackout regime.

In practice, the FCC rules primarily benefit the NFL because the nation’s other major sports leagues don’t punish fans by keeping games off local TV when they aren’t sold out. The NFL has resorted to astroturfing to make it seem as though the general public supports blackouts, and dismissed opposition from fans as being incited by cable and satellite companies. NFL attorney Gerard Waldron (who also lobbies for broadcasters on other matters) disparaged Goodfriend’s motivations, telling Ars that the Sports Fans Coalition “has received funding from Dish, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon,” and that Goodfriend “has close and longtime ties to Dish as their former in-house lobbyist and now is an outside consultant.”

XKCD Author's Unpublished Book Remains a Best-Seller For 5 Months

by samzenpus
destinyland writes Tuesday is the official release date for the newest book from the geeky cartoonist behind XKCD — yet it's already become one of Amazon's best-selling books. Thanks to a hefty pre-order discount, one blogger notes that it's appeared on Amazon's list of hardcover best-sellers since the book was first announced in March, and this weekend it remains in the top 10. Randall Munroe recently announced personal appearances beginning this week throughout the U.S. (including Cambridge, New York, Seattle, and the San Francisco Bay Area) — as well as a Google Hangout on Friday, September 12. Just two weeks ago he was also awarded the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story — and now many of his appearances are already sold out.

New Booze: Reformulated Wheeler's Gin from Santa Fe Spirits

by Camper English

Wheeler's Gin Relaunches from Santa Fe Spirits

SantaFeSpirits_ginSanta Fe Spirits originally created Wheeler’s Gin to express the terroir of the New Mexico desert with its native scrub sage and cholla cactus blossoms. Owner of Santa Fe Spirits Colin Keegan brought in John Jeffery, formerly Head Distiller for Death’s Door Spirits to help reformulate the product.

Rather than try to match the original gin exactly John took the existing botanicals (juniper, cholla cactus blossom, osha root, sage, and hops) and exercised some creative license to produce what he hopes truly matches the original vision of Wheeler’s: A gin that evokes the smell of the desert after a rain and seeks to highlight the unusual ingredients and their character.

Botanicals:

Cholla cactus blossom is hand harvested by Santa Fe Spirits staff and friends in spring. Osha root, traditionally a medicinal root used by Native Americans, brings the earthy grounding background usually found in angelica root. White desert sage, having some of the compounds found in fennel, carries not only the herbal aroma of the desert but brings a touch of sweetness to the finish of the gin. Hops in this gin are nearly undetectable and are used primarily to add body and to round out the experience of the other botanicals.

The botanicals are distilled separately with a combination of vapor extraction and maceration.

Santa Fe Spirits Wheelers Gin sells for a suggested retail price of $32 and is currently distributed in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Texas.

Sierra Leone's 365 Ebola deaths traced back to one healer - Yahoo News

by gguillotte
The outbreak need never have spread from Guinea, health officials revealed to AFP, except for a herbalist in the remote eastern border village of Sokoma. "She was claiming to have powers to heal Ebola. Cases from Guinea were crossing into Sierra Leone for treatment," Mohamed Vandi, the top medical official in the hard-hit district of Kenema, told AFP. "She got infected and died. During her funeral, women around the other towns got infected."

or at least Abita's distribution people, because god, please, stop with the Purple Haze and Turbodog. Please. it's over. stop.

your seasonal not-sweet fruit beers are the best fucking things at that scale and you send like one six pack of them each to like 12 states? fuck you. give me my strawberry and satsuma fucking beers you assholes. GIVE

Obviously the beer discussion here starts with Abita. Purple Haze sounds more exciting than it tastes, but some of their less widespread releases make up for their more average flagships.

The Tacoma Police Department apparently has bought — and quietly used for six years — controversial surveillance equipment that can sweep up records of every cellphone call, text message and data transfer up to a half a mile away.

You don’t have to be a criminal to be caught in this law enforcement snare. You just have to be near one and use a cellphone.

Known as Stingray, the device — small enough to be carried in a car — tricks cellphones into thinking it’s a cell tower and draws in their information.

News that the city was using the surveillance equipment surprised City Council members, who approved an update for a device last year, and prosecutors, defense attorneys and even judges, who in court deal with evidence gathered using the surveillance equipment.

“If they use it wisely and within limits, that’s one thing,” said Ronald Culpepper, the presiding judge of Pierce County Superior Court, when informed of the device Tuesday. “I would certainly personally have some concerns about just sweeping up information from non-involved and innocent parties — and to do it with a whole neighborhood? That’s concerning.”

For years, a growing number of local law enforcement agencies have used the surveillance devices to track a cell signal to deduce a subject’s location, who he communicates with, for how long and how often.

The only reason it even was learned about was a Pierce County Sheriff’s department employee questioned a billing statement, where the city as charging the county a “Sharing Fee” for the operation.

“The Police Department appears to have updated its equipment last year with money authorized by a City Council whose members now say they didn’t know what they were buying.

“I’ve got to find out what I voted on before I comment,” Councilman David Boe said Monday. “This is new information.”

The devices are indiscriminate in the information they collect, and that bothers civil libertarians.”

App gives moms the power to lock kids’ phones if they screen their calls

app gives kids the power to teach themselves how to flash their phone's firmware

When it comes to parenting, there are a million different methods. Some prefer a hands-off approach and like to let their child make their own decisions, while others will go to great lengths to make sure their kids aren’t getting into trouble. For those in the latter camp, a new Android app called Ignore No More enables them to remotely shut down their child’s smartphone until they return their calls.

Created by Texas-based Mountaineer Technology Ventures, the app requires parents to be able to install the software on both their own and their child’s phone. This means they’ll need to have their child’s permission, or at least feel ok about sneaking into their kid’s room and stealing their phone. The app enables devices to be registered under either a Parent or Child account. The Parent account gives moms and dads certain admin rights to their child’s phone, meaning they can control the lock screen and password and add their number to the emergency call abilities. Through the Ignore No More app, parents can simply tap a button to shut down the child’s phone by setting a new lock code. The child’s phone can then only be used for emergency services calls or to call their mom back to get the new code.

Members can add as many children accounts as they like and up to two parent accounts. The app also notifies parents if the child tampers with the Ignore No More installation on their device. It’s available to buy from Google Play for USD 1.99 per device.

While the app may prove a hit with worried parents, whether kids would allow them to install the app or give them their lock code in the first place is another matter. Are there other ways kids can stay connected with their parents throughout the day without feeling trapped?

Japanese high school baseball game lasts 50 innings over 4 days

by Bill Hanstock
firehose

IF THERE IS NO MANGA ADAPTATION OF THIS
THEN MANGA IS DEAD

That's ... probably too many innings.

In Japan, the semifinal game of a high school baseball tournament lasted 50 innings and took four days to play. It ended on Aug. 31 When Chukyo High School scored three runs in the top of the 50th -- THE TOP OF THE FIFTIETH -- to defeat Sotoku High School.

Here are the absolute most ridiculous things to happen in this marathon of a game, as reported by The Asahi Shimbun:

- The losing pitcher, Jukiya Ishioka, threw a complete game, going 50 innings and tossing 689 pitches.
- The winning pitcher, Taiga Matsui, also threw 50 innings, needing 709 pitches.
- 709 pitches.
- Matsui pitched in relief IN THE NEXT GAME.
- "According to the tournament rules, if the game was still tied after 54 innings, the winner would have been decided in a drawing." -- oh okay

Strangers will verbally deliver your messages with this app

by WIRED UK
firehose

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

No matter how many emoticons you use, messaging apps (for the most part) remain a rather impersonal form of communication that fall somewhere between e-mail and phone calls on the formality scale.

Artist and actress Miranda July is hoping to change this with her new messaging app Somebody, which will send your missives not directly to your friend, but to a nearby human stranger who will relay the message verbally to its intended recipient.

While the app is very much a real piece of technology, it is also a far-reaching public art project that to some extent involves the sender replacing their avatar with a real-life messenger, who is being directed in a mini performance. On the app's website, July describes Somebody as: "The antithesis of the utilitarian efficiency that tech promises, here, finally, is an app that makes us nervous, giddy, and alert to the people around us."
