Well, let my know how much I owe you and I’ll drop a few pennies in the mail. War comes from taxes you paid, and I personally dislike the amount I pay going for that… Maybe we should check “yes” or “no” on our 1040 forms this year for allocation of tax dollars.
I’m sorry you think I’m lying, but I’m not. I qualified for the Medicaid expansion under the ACA, which is partially funded through taxpayer revenue. I don’t think the IRS mailed you a letter saying, “Nah nah nah nah naaaaaaah! This year’s tax dollars went to pay for medicine for poor people mwahahaha!” Who knows? Maybe YOUR portion of tax dollars went to a Hellfire missile that took out a village in Afghanistan. Ooh, how exciting for you!
Comfort yourself with that thought as I use my inhaler, which I would not have been able to afford without the ACA.

what the fuck is wrong with Americans who aren’t on board with free healthcare. I’m Canadian and I don’t care that I pay extra taxes so a little boy in Alberta can have open heart surgery, or an elderly man in Nova Scotia can get the heart medication he desperately needs. It’s called taking care of your people. I’m glad I pay so that people can have a good quality of life. It’s called being a decent fucking human being.

As someone who is now transitioning off of the Medicaid expansion, and prior to that the county health care system, I am glad, nay, fucking jubilant that someone is able to get health care because of the taxes I paid into the system.
Up until four years ago, my partner and I had private health insurance. And we paid a grip for it. It was expensive enough that when she lost her job (and I had already been out of work for almost six months) and the insurance was immediately cut off , we took one look at the COBRA payment and I said, “We’re going to have to go without.” That payment was $975.00 a month. Our rent at the time was $1000/mo. Part of the reason our payment was potentially that high was because of me. We had the most comprehensive plan we could afford because I have sarcoidosis. Those payments included chest x-rays, pulmonary function tests, two types of inhalers, visits to a pulmonologist on top of my regular doctor visits. And that’s just to make sure nothing is kicking off.
My doctor said, “Here’s what you’re going to do, you’re going to go down to Highland Hospital (aka the county), sign up for this program and get some basic health care. You can come see me in the women’s clinic and that way you’ll still have continuity of care for when you get insurance again.”
To make a long story short, there’s a lot of people who need help and you meet them all in the county system. The system itself is overburdened and underfunded and you do the best you can to be patient even when your patience is at it’s thinnest. It’s imperfect and anyone who knows me really well has listened to my battles with trying to get the tests I needed to determine whether or not I had breast cancer.
But you know what? The taxes I paid in Alameda County pre-ACA meant that my now partner’s life and leg were saved when she ended up in the county hospital after being dumped from a private institution when her insurance was cut off by her job. The county most recently saved a friend of mine who had a massive tumor sitting in his chest and who was also shuffled out of a for profit hospital because he didn’t have insurance (he did have a job at the time mind you).
I cheered when pre-existing conditions were covered because it meant that I would not be turned away because of the sarcoidosis.
Because my partner has a new job, we have private insurance again. I called Alameda Alliance to find out what I needed to do to let MediCal know and when we were finished, I told the rep thank you because the county, my taxes, and other people taxes, helped me when I needed it, helped my friend, saved my life.
It’s easy to say that others are a drain on the system but I’d rather have people healthy and getting what they need than not.
