Courtney shared this story from Super Opinionated.

Since my post about getting drunk and playing Skyrim seemed to be so popular, I got drunk again last night and played The Sims. I’ll be honest, the whole ordeal felt like trying to catch lightning in a bottle and I really don’t think it holds up to the Skyrim post, and I never really found that funny to begin with. But what the fuck do I know, here’s what happened.

Stay Calm and Carry On: Why it’s nearly impossible for Ebola to spread in the US

by Gwynn Guilford
firehose

"Avoid Ebola-infected pigs and you’re fine."

Panic in the air.

Well, it finally happened: The US just got its first case of Ebola. Health officials have confirmed that a man recently admitted to a Dallas hospital has come down with the deadly virus, which has already killed more than 3,000 people in West Africa. The patient was admitted based on both symptoms and “travel history“—presumably he had been in West Africa—and is now being held in “strict isolation,” say officials.

Below are excerpts from an earlier Quartz piece on a New York patient suspected of carrying the Ebola virus that explore why Americans would do well not to panic:

If your Twitter feed is anything like mine, news that Ebola might have turned up in Manhattan is freaking out a lot of Americans. “Helpful” bits of commentary include as that it’s “deadly uncurable,” has a 90% fatality rate, and causes “a hemorrhagic fever that eventually leads to a complete bleed-out.” Today’s news merely amplifies the anxiety that’s been building since word got out that two Americans infected with Ebola have been moved to US hospitals for treatment.

There are plenty of people who should be protecting themselves against Ebola’s spread—and they live in West Africa. Those of us who are in the US should feel comforted by the following:

  • Ebola’s not airborne. It can only be spread through bodily fluids. The virus spreads when blood, semen, urine, vomit, feces, or other bodily fluids of an infected person come into contact with someone else’s mucus membranes.
  • And it’s not just any infected person—it’s a symptomatic infected person. People can only catch ebola from someone actually exhibiting symptoms. Those include vomiting, diarrhea, and, in some cases, hemorrhaging of mucus membranes, such as nose, nail beds and eyes—in other words, pretty hard to miss.
  • It isn’t curable, but people survive it. In fact, this outbreak has a 57% mortality rate—much lower than that oft-cited 90%. Victims die of organ failure, not blood loss.
  • That pig study doesn’t mean anything. Some people are citing a 2008 study showing airborne Ebola transmission from pigs to rhesus monkeys (they were never in direct contact with each other). However, as Aetiology explains, this experiment showed merely that pigs seem unusually good at spritzing the air with coughed-up viruses. Avoid Ebola-infected pigs and you’re fine.
  • Nearly every hospital in the US is equipped to treat Ebola patients and keep them in isolation. And the symptoms, once they set in, are so aggressive that it’s hard to do much of anything except head to the hospital.
  • Another reason for all the worry is that the media (Quartz included) has tended to zero in on this outbreak’s rapid spread and its being the “deadliest in history.” While both are true, that says way more about the quality of medical care in war-torn, poverty-stricken pockets of West Africa than it does about Ebola’s virulence.

Compare the Mount Sinai response with that Liberian hospitals, which are so packed that they’re having to turn away Ebola patients. The country is running out of rubber gloves, and the health ministry just dumped 37 Ebola-infected corpses in a swampy, open hole near a (so far, relatively healthy) village. Those aren’t first-world problems.

Scott Z. Burns, who wrote the screenplay for Contagion, notes that Americans tend to freak out about “the monster we can see”—in this case, that would mean the gruesome images of Ebola victims bleeding from their faces—while ignoring more familiar but no less deadly risks. He has a point; thanks to the anti-vaccine movement, measles cases in the US have surged nearly fourfold since last year.

Man Walks Past Security Screening Staring At iPad, Causing Airport Evacuation

by samzenpus
First time accepted submitter chentiangemalc writes While Australia is on "high alert" for terror threats a man walked past a Sydney Airport security screening while engrossed in his iPad and delayed flights for an hour. From the article: "This event was captured on CCTV and unnerved officials so much that they evacuated passengers. As the Sydney Morning Herald reported, the man found himself (or, perhaps, didn't) going into the terminal through an exit passage that clearly was convenient for him, but less convenient for the hordes of passengers who not only had to be removed from Terminal 3, but also re-screened. A spokeswoman for Qantas told the Morning Herald: 'The man disembarked a flight and left. It appears he wasn't paying attention, was looking at his iPad, forgot something and walked back past (the security area).'"

Cyber harassment study reveals the unsurprising!

It still amazes me that I talk to guys who still think they get harassed just as much as women online. Like even from people who aren’t clearly and totally gross dumbasses. It kinda makes me think that, even in the best cases, it might be hard to really understand the sheer difference in frequency. You see a woman get harassed on a game and you go “Oh well I’ve been harassed” without understanding that there is seldom a session for her where that doesn’t happen or understanding what her inbox might look like…

That is a sort of stunning degree of difference.

"The data’s in! Women were lying about online harassment!”

"Aha! We knew it!

Yeah, they’ve been severely underreporting how bad things are for them, turns out.”

"Wait, what?"

How do you make a phablet easier to use in one hand? Give it a Buddy

by Dan Seifert
firehose

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Phablets are big and can be hard to use in one hand, but Alcatel thinks it has the solution for this dilemma. Its latest Android phablet, the Pop Mega, a six-inch honker available from Tracfone's prepaid Straight Talk brand next month, actually comes with a secondary, little phone for making calls, sending texts, and getting notifications. The secondary phone is affectionately known as the Buddy and pairs to the Pop Mega via Bluetooth. Alcatel notes that it's easier to use the Buddy when making phone calls, while the Pop Mega is better suited for browsing the web, watching video, and doing all the other things you do with a smartphone.

Alcatel isn't the first company to try this idea — HTC launched the Mini accessory for its big phones in China back in January, 2013. But instead of being a costly accessory, Alcatel is including the Buddy in the box with the Pop Mega, which is expected to cost less than $250 when it goes on sale. Alcatel is also releasing a line of Pop phones with Tracfone, including the $150, 4-inch Pop Star with LTE, and the 5-inch Pop Icon designed for first-time smartphone buyers. All of the Alcatel Pop line will be available starting next month.

As previously announced, David Fincher is once again teaming up with Gone Girl novelist/screenwriter Gillian Flynn to adapt the British series Utopia—the conspiracy thriller, not the terrible reality show—for HBO. Flynn was already set to write the project, and now, according to Entertainment Weekly, Fincher will direct the entire first season. It’s a bit of a shift for Fincher, who helmed only two episodes of House Of Cards before stepping into a producing role.

Utopia follows a group of people who discover an obscure graphic novel that predicts major disasters, only to find themselves tracked by a shadowy agency. Speaking to The Guardian, Fincher explained what he finds so interesting about the project. “I like the world of it,” he says. “I like the characters—I love Dennis’ [Kelly, creator of the UK show] honesty and affinity for the nerds. Alley the Cat Sets the World’s Record for the Longest Jump Made By a Cat

A rescued cat named Alley, who currently performs with The Acro-Cats (see previous), has set the World Record for the longest jump made by a cat. Samantha Martin, Alley’s human and trainer, says that she knew that Alley was a talented cat from the start.

Alley started out as such a frail little kitty and to have her grow up and become strong and then eventually end up being a Guinness World Record holding cat is so exciting for us and for her because she had such, you know difficult beginnings and now she’s a star. In a year’s period we got her from jumping two, three feet, four feet, five feet and then finally right before she turned a year old she was able to leap the full six feet.

TV Club: Selfie: “Pilot”

by Sonia Saraiya

"viewers of Selfie watch as a man tells a woman that all the things women are told to do, daily, by advertising and the media and men and other women, are wrong, and make her a bad person. This, even though Eliza is introduced as the best employee in sales—surely self-absorption is a useful quality when shilling nasal spray? The way she’s treated in Selfie is so obviously patronizing and unnecessarily shaming that it’s tempting to write off the whole show as half-baked"

First things first: Selfie has a lot of problems. It’s hard to judge a show based on just the pilot, and harder still with a sitcom like Selfie, which is trying to establish months of backstory in a few short strokes. But all the caveats in the world can’t hide the fact that Selfie is mess—much like its protagonist, Eliza Dooley, played by Scottish actress Karen Gillan attempting an American accent. The point of the show is that Eliza is a problem. Where Selfie gets confused, very quickly, is in determining exactly how Eliza is a problem. At least part of it is that she has “loose sexual morals,” which in sitcomland is somehow considered a character flaw. Some other part of it is that Eliza is always on her phone; a third part is that she doesn’t ask people in her office how well they ...

Michael Phelps arrested for DUI in Maryland

84 miles per hour in a 45 zone, crossing a double yellow line

Phelps was arrested for his second DUI on Tuesday.

Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was arrested in Baltimore Tuesday morning for driving under the influence, according to a report from TMZ.

Phelps was initially pulled over around 1:40 a.m. for driving a white 2014 Land Rover 84 miles per hour in a 45 zone in the Fort McHenry Tunnel on Interstate 95. He was asked to perform a field sobriety test, which indicated alcohol in his system twice Maryland's legal limit of .08.

Phelps was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence, speeding and crossing a double yellow line. According to WBAL in Baltimore, Phelps was cooperative with police throughout and was later released.

The arrest is Phelps' second DUI charge. The first came in 2004, when he was 19 years old. Phelps accepted a plea deal following the first arrest and was sentenced to 18 months probation. The 22-time Olympic medal winner retired from competitive swimming following the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, but announced he was returning to the pool in April of this year.

TMZ first reported his arrest, which has since been confirmed by the Associated Press. Phelps has not yet issued a statement.

Steve Smith just won't go away

by Louis Bien
firehose

"There's Smith throwing down safety Roman Harper with little effort," which is good, because it takes very little effort to throw Roman Harper

If Steve Smith ever had a moment of self doubt, he squashed it with one of the most inspiring payback performances one may ever see.

If you've ever dealt with bed bugs, you know they are about the worst sort of pest one can encounter. And if you have ever crushed the scourge, you understand just how good Steve Smith feels right now.

Bed bugs are an insidious thing. They emerge when you are sleeping, and attack you while you are in a personal space. They are a physical affliction, but the worst part is the omnipresent mental stress. Bed bugs instill doubt -- you start to feel things crawling on your skin that don't exist, you question whether the problem is really solved, wonder whether you can live worry-free ever again. Bed bugs live can live for over a year without a meal. Though technically vanquishable, their return can feel like an inevitability, along the lines of getting older and dying.

As with aging, you might never be able to defeat the bug. Coping methods include pretending the problem doesn't exist, or making a vain attempt to live with it. The best, however, is to do what Smith did, and tell it to fuck right off:

Smith was cut by the Carolina Panthers this offseason for a host of complicated reasons, but primary among them was that his play had slipped to a point that didn't justify keeping his salary on the books and his domineering personality in the locker room. This made Smith very angry, so much so that he vowed revenge in an unrelated game that took place three weeks ahead of the Week 4 bout against the Panthers. He had suffered an attack on the mind, body and spirit. In pure vindictiveness, he achieved retribution against them all.

Smith vs. his battered spirit

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh has said of Smith that he "loves being underestimated." By cutting Smith -- and by the way they cut him, allegedly leaving Smith in the dark while publicly dropping hints during the offseason -- the Panthers told the wideout in some form that he was washed up, setting a karmic time bomb that blew in the first quarter.

Smith tip catch

This play was not intended for Smith. It's unclear whether Smith even should have been where he was. He and Owen Daniels were headed for the same spot on the field, and Joe Flacco's pass appeared to be targeted at the tight end. Smith may have screwed up on this play, but no matter. He was destined to shine that day -- Sunday, Sept. 28 -- just as he had ordained Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Smith vs. his withering body

Size has always been a criticism against Smith. Standing 5'9, his success as a wideout is an anomaly -- by the end of the season, Smith could have beyond 3,000 more career receiving yards than Gary Clark, who retired in 1995 as the NFL's all-time leading receiver standing 5'9 or under. Smith's declining explosiveness has made him a popular pick to fade in his twilight years. And yet here he is, on pace for a career season and undeterred because one thing remains constant though Smith's career is nearing it's close: The man is tough as hell.

smitty

smitty

There's Smith throwing down safety Roman Harper with little effort. There's Smith catching his second touchdown pass of the day with Melvin White draped all over him. Smith hasn't lost a step. At least, he hasn't lost anything that he can't make up with pure force of will.

Smith vs. all rationality

Through four games, Smith has 429 receiving yards, putting him on pace for more than 1,700. At age 35, that would easily be a career high, and something no one has ever done at his age -- the only comparable feats would be Marvin Harrison racking up 1,366 at age 34, and Jerry Rice gaining 1,848 at age 33. At this rate, Smith will better his 2013 production after just seven games.

Smith wasn't hurt last season -- he missed the regular season finale with a PCL strain, but was fine leading up to Week 16. His role simply changed. He was still the fierce competitor and downfield blocker he always has been, but now he was tasked with being a possession option. Smith averaged just 11.6 yards per reception, well below a career average of 14.9 across his other 13 seasons.

It appeared that Smith had slipped for good. Fans were advocating a permanent move to the slot (something Smith himself had suggested for several years). The wideout didn't appear to be himself, resigned to a perfunctory role (on, admittedly, one of the better Panthers teams of his career).

Whether Smith's move to Baltimore shook something loose is impossible to say. It's the fun narrative to slap on this story, however, the week after he performed perhaps the most satisfying half of football of any player this season. It was as perfect a performance as we have seen, precisely because there was nothing surprising about it. Smith gave us a heads up in Week 1, and delivered -- five catches for 122 yards and two touchdowns by halftime, seven catches for 139 yards for the game.

No one mentioned Smith's mental state during the 2013 season. We all tacitly assumed, perhaps Smith included, that old receivers are supposed to fade away. If no had said anything and Smith remained a Panther, we may be still be watching his decline with acceptance and indifference. But general manager Dave Gettleman implicitly opened his mouth last month and decided that the Panthers legend wasn't good enough for the team. And instead of tolerating a new nibbling itch of self-doubt, Smith decided to remove the infestation by proverbially nuking his whole damn apartment.

For the uninitiated: "ringzzzzz" is Basketball Twitter's epithet for some fans' tendency to begin and end every argument about Kobe's excellence relative to other NBA greats by focusing only on the five championships he's won. Kobe wearing this shirt himself is so many degrees of meta it makes me dizzy. This is like if Barack Obama wore a "Thanks, Obama" t-shirt.

"Judgement Day" by EC Comics. From wikipedia:

The story depicted a human astronaut, a representative of the Galactic Republic, visiting the planet Cybrinia inhabited by robots. He finds the robots divided into functionally identical orange and blue races, one of which has fewer rights and privileges than the other. The astronaut decides that due to the robots’ bigotry, the Galactic Republic should not admit the planet. In the final panel, he removes his helmet, revealing himself to be a black man.

Apparently the Comics Code Authority tried to prevent the author from making the main character black.

Boy did they! It took the writer (and the company) threatening the CCA with a lawsuit and telling the guy to fuck off (literally) to get this thing printed:

Comic Historian Digby Diehl recounted in Tales from the Crypt: The Official Archives:

This really made ‘em go bananas in the Code czar’s office. ‘Judge Murphy was off his nut. He was really out to get us’, recalls [EC editor] Feldstein. ‘I went in there with this story and Murphy says, “It can’t be a Black man”. But … but that’s the whole point of the story!’ Feldstein sputtered. When Murphy continued to insist that the Black man had to go, Feldstein put it on the line. ‘Listen’, he told Murphy, ‘you’ve been riding us and making it impossible to put out anything at all because you guys just want us out of business’. [Feldstein] reported the results of his audience with the czar to Gaines, who was furious [and] immediately picked up the phone and called Murphy. ‘This is ridiculous!’ he bellowed. ‘I’m going to call a press conference on this. You have no grounds, no basis, to do this. I’ll sue you’. Murphy made what he surely thought was a gracious concession. ‘All right. Just take off the beads of sweat’. At that, Gaines and Feldstein both went ballistic. ‘Fuck you!’ they shouted into the telephone in unison. Murphy hung up on them, but the story ran in its original form.[18]

You know, it’s times like this that I am deeply comforted, knowing that history isn’t just everyone being nice and polite and better than the current generation.  Sometimes it really is just people bellowing swear words over the phone to get shit done.
