Courtney shared this story from Super Opinionated.

socialjusticekoolaid:

Today In Solidarity (10.5.14): Voter Registration surges in Ferguson in the wake of Mike Brown’s death. The ballot box is not a singular or final solution to dismantling the systems of oppression in Ferguson and beyond, but it’s certainly an important area to focus on. Remember, the current city council/government is disproportionately white due in large part to voter apathy. It’s not too late to get registered, but many state deadlines are coming up this week! For more info visit: VOTE MISSOURI or Rock the Vote.

There’s no place where you can affect change more directly or effectively than at the local level. Don’t sleep on municipal elections. #staywoke #farfromover

Jaguars fan rocks jeans, long black-sleeved shirt in pool

by Rodger Sherman
firehose

this photo is Florida as fuck

This seems like a very uncomfortable way to enjoy a football game.

The Jaguars have pools in their stadium, complete with bikinied barstaff and cheerleaders. Sexy! Cool! Fun way to spend a lot of money at a football game.

It isn't as fun and sexy in practice:

wat

Look: we would never shame someone for not wanting to go shirtless in a public setting.

But, dear Jaguars fan: jeans? Jeans! Jeans! You knew you were going to a pool party at a football game! Denim in a pool must be so uncomfortable! And it's 74 degrees in Jacksonville! Why were you wearing jeans in the first place!

(Also, whoever programmed the sign in the bottom right misspelled "forecast.")

Bill Gates: Bitcoin Is 'Better Than Currency'

by Soulskill

hehehehehehehehehe

An anonymous reader sends this excerpt from Entrepreneur.com: After long remaining mostly mum on Bitcoin, Microsoft's legendary co-founder Bill Gates has spoken. At the Sibos 2014 financial-services industry conference in Boston, America's richest man just threw his weight behind the controversial cryptocash. Well, at least as a low-cost payments solution. ... "Bitcoin is exciting because it shows how cheap it can be," he told Erik Schatzker during a Bloomberg TV's Smart Street show interview yesterday (video). "Bitcoin is better than currency in that you don't have to be physically in the same place and, of course, for large transactions, currency can get pretty inconvenient." ... While he seems relatively bullish on how inexpensive transacting in Bitcoin can be, Gates isn't singing the praises of its anonymity. The billionaire alluded in an oblique, somewhat rambling fashion to some of the more nefarious anonymous uses associated with Bitcoin.

Review: Doctor Who: “Kill The Moon” · TV Club · The A.V. Club

by gguillotte
The casual racism towards Mexico was a stitch. At first you're like, ok, fine future Mexico has a space program, and apparently they went to the moon before any other country sent any woman as an astronaut(?), that's cool. And then you get inside the shuttle and there's this brightly colored poncho just sitting on a chair. And a bunch of baby cacti. Because Mexico. How else would you know?

"On our side, a lot of journalists hate the nepotism, and most importantly, they hate the..."

On our side, a lot of journalists hate the nepotism, and most importantly, they hate the relationship the industry has with journalism. Because a while back ago, “games journalism” was essentially coopted as a marketing arm for certain AAA publishers. At that point, AAA publishers became gatekeepers for success in games journalism. It’s awful, because we want to be talking critically. We want to be looking at games in different lights. We want to approach these works of art as works of art, and not just as the next success or flop. But that can’t happen on any large scale, because of that corruption, because of the commercialism of it all.

The way a lot of the Gamergate stuff looks to us really looks like some strange bizarro world where the games industry works completely different than it really does.

The biggest targets of Gamergate have been people who are frankly powerless in the games industry. People like Zoe Quinn and Phil Fish, they are not gatekeepers. They are not able to enact any real, significant influence on the industry. Most independent game jams, awards, and exhibitions are small groups of people, trying to make names for themselves in their little ponds. That’s how independent artists work in pretty much every creative field. They can’t compete with the game industry, so they’re trying to carve out their own little micro industry, where they do their own things and have a captive audience.

Fantastic 360-Degree Little Planet Panoramas of Rocket Launches at Baikonur Cosmodrome

by EDW Lynch

Little Planet Panoramas of Baikonur Cosmodrome

In 2011 and 2012, Russian photographer Andrew Bodrov traveled to Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and created a wonderful series of space-themed 360-degree “little planet” panoramas. While at Baikonur he was able to capture several rocket launches, as well as various monuments scattered around the space launch facility. One of his more striking images, a launch of a Proton-M rocket, was featured in the 157th International Print Exhibition of The Royal Photographic Society. Bodrov’s Baikonur panoramas are also available in interactive versions. He has more little planets on his site.

DEADLINE: True, but the year he made Apocalypto, I didn’t see a better movie and he was ignored and hasn’t directed since. Marvel badly wants Iron Man 4 and you’ve said you aren’t doing it. How about the idea you’ll do that movie if Mel directs it? DOWNEY: Correct.

Fortune.com: Blame Tech Diversity On Culture, Not Pipeline

by Soulskill
firehose

THIS THIS THIS
ASK WOMEN
LISTEN TO WOMEN

NOT DIFFICULT, NERDS

FrnkMit writes: Challenging a previous Code.org story on tech diversity, a Forbes.com writer interviewed 716 women who left the technology field. Her conclusion: corporate culture, and the larger social structure, is the primary cause for these women leaving the industry and never looking back. Specific issues include a lack of maternity policies in small companies, low pay which barely covers day care, "jokes" from male coworkers, and always feeling like the "odd duck." In reality, there are probably many intertwined causes: peer pressure at the high-school and college level, female-unfriendly geek culture, low pay, a lack of accommodations for pregnant/nursing mothers, the myth of "having it all," stereotype threat, and repeated assertions that women aren't biologically suited to writing software and therefore there's no problem at all.

FCC Puts Comcast and Time Warner Merger On Hold

by samzenpus

YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

An anonymous reader writes "In a public letter to both Time Warner and Comcast, the FCC said they are putting a hold on the merger deal between the two companies. Citing inadequate responses by both cable companies to earlier FCC requests for additional information, the agency is stopping the clock on its 180-day review period until late October. Comcast and Time Warner together control most of the Internet services in the country. However, the companies said they are in different regions and are not going to suppress the competition.
