Grim Fandango returns with updated graphics, orchestral score and fan-made controls

A remastered version of Grim Fandango coming to PlayStation and PC platforms next year feels something like a video game miracle. Thanks to developer Double Fine's efforts and some smart people at Disney and LucasArts — people who can make things happen — players will get the opportunity to play Tim Schafer's classic noir adventure game, now lovingly overhauled.
At Indiecade, Double Fine and PlayStation brought the PS4 version of the game — it's also coming to PlayStation Vita and Linux, Mac and Windows — putting their remastering efforts on display. The most noticeable difference comes, unsurprisingly, in the game's graphics. Grim Fandango's pre-rendered backgrounds have been uprezzed and textures for real-time 3D models have been wholly recreated. Players can switch between the game's old 3D models and its new ones with a tap of the DualShock 4's touchpad — the difference in resolution and quality is pretty striking.
There are some subtler visual changes. Lighting effects, like the green glow of a computer monitor and warm sunlight pouring through a window, have been applied to character models.
The game is presented in its original 4:3 aspect ratio, but Double Fine is planning to add some widescreen options. Players can choose to simple stretch the screen out, but other options (like some screen filling art) are being considered, senior publishing manager Greg Rice said.
Grim Fandango Remastered also adds a new modern analog control scheme. The new controls are based on a player-made mod — Double Fine contracted the modder who originally developed the alternate controls to bring his work to the Remastered version — and make controlling Manny much easier. Purists who prefer the game's tank-style controls will have the option to play that way, but analog will be the default.
The game's midi soundtrack is also being redone. The Melbourne Symphony, which recorded the orchestral soundtrack for Double Fine's Broken Age, is performing the score (which is being recorded next week).
Remastered also adds developer commentary to the game. Tim Schafer and other Grim Fandango developers recorded commentary during a series of gameplay sessions. As players move about the game, a clapperboard icon will appear in the upper left of the screen when Manny is near certain objects or locations. Tap the L1 button, and you'll hear the Grim Fandango crew wax nostalgic or provide some amusing insight.
Grim Fandango Remastered looks like a re-release of a classic game that walks the line between looking just as good you remembered it and simultaneously better than that. Maybe the most impressive thing about it is that we're getting it at all, that a LucasArts adventure game managed to find its way out of the Disney vaults. Expect Grim Fandango Remastered to arrive sometime in early 2015.

Underviewed, A Site That Searches YouTube for Videos With Generic File Names

Underviewed is a site by Felix Jung that searches YouTube for videos with generic file names. The idea being that videos with generic file names will, generally speaking, receive less views, and they would have gone mostly unseen or been overlooked entirely.
For example, a Go Pro camera names its videos in a certain way (GOPR1234.MP4); an iPhone names all its videos using a fixed format (IMG_1234.MOV). The Underviewed site searches YouTube using these types of filenames as its search criteria.

Hallal told me that the All Jane team first caught wind of the posters when a Google alert popped up yesterday linking to a Craigslist post (copied below) organizing a protest of All Jane No Dick:

I will be following the events of the All Jane No Dick festival quietly protesting it's sexist connotations. The outright segregation of any person's due to their sex alone is prejudice. It's simple, it feeds a sense of angst towards men just for being men.
I plan to stand outside the event as close as I legally can holding a sign. This wont be a verbal protest. Meaning, I wont be shouting any slogans, chants, or making comments to attendants. I would prefer that if any joins me, they don't engage in shouting etc as well. I will however answer questions that people have if they wish to approach me.

Today we will look at the Maître Cabinotier Astronomica, a superlative timepiece from Vacheron Constantin. Like the elaborately engraved Traditionnelle “L’empreinte Du Dragon” that I showed you last week, this is also a one-of-a-kind creation. But first let me say that there’s more to the Astronomica (as I will refer to it here) than it being a 1/1 piece with an 15-complications. A fact that seems lost on other watch media out there is that this watch is “the very first representative of a new and highly exclusive range of models” crafted in the spirit of Vacheron’s Atelier Cabinotiers. This is important, because by evoking Atelier Cabinotiers, Vacheron Constantin tells those of us in the know (and now you, Perpetuelle readers), that the Astronomica is by definition a veeeeerrrrry special piece.
As I extensively wrote about a couple years ago, the Atelier Cabinotiers is essentially Vacheron’s “special order” department, where exceptional watches are conceived according to the wishes of a private client and nothing more. In other words, among the most ambitious and exclusive timepieces made by Vacheron, period. Bespoke watchmaking at its finest.
