Thai student protestors arrested for “Hunger Games” salute

by Adam Epstein
Thai Hunger Games salute

Five student protestors were arrested in Thailand today for holding up the three-fingered “Mockingjay” salute, which opponents to the country’s military junta have adopted from The Hunger Games as a symbol of their resistance.

In May, a coup led by the commander of the Royal Thai Army Prayuth Chan-ocha overthrew the Thai government and declared martial law. Chan-ocha is now prime minister of Thailand after his hand-picked legislature elected him. Among the ruling junta’s reforms? Banning the Hunger Games salute.

The five university students were detained when they made the gesture in front of Prayuth, who was visiting the northeastern province of Khon Kaen to observe the drought situation there. The students were then taken to a military camp.

This is certainly not the first time protestors have been inspired by pop culture. The Guy Fawkes mask popularized by the 2006 film V for Vendetta is often donned by members of the hacktivist group Anonymous and supporters of the Occupy movement and similar anti-establishment groups. And in Hong Kong, pro-democracy demonstrators in the Umbrella Movement have adopted “Do You Hear the People Sing” from Les Miserables as their anthem.

A spokesman for the junta told the Associated Press that a single individual doing the salute would not be arrested, but “five or more” saluting simultaneously is considered an illegal demonstration, and thus would be grounds for arrest.

The film series’ penultimate installment, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 1 opens in Thailand tomorrow.

Newswire: Nielsen will start measuring Netflix’s viewers without its permission

by William Hughes

Nielsen Holdings N.V.—the company that allows people whom you’d slowly back away from at a party to decide which of your favorite TV shows aren’t worth keeping—has finally found a way to get ratings numbers for TV shows watched via streaming. Netflix and Amazon have always been reticent about sharing specific viewing numbers for both their original programming and licensed content, but Nielsen has figured out a way to get the data without requiring the services’ permission. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Nielsen will begin using devices already attached to their reporters’ televisions to analyze and identify which programs are streamed on their TVs.

In recent years, Nielsen has moved away from its self-reporting diary system in favor of automatic digital reporting devices. At present, most Nielsen family televisions are equipped with a “home set,” which records and reports data on ...

Walmart’s Amazon Price Matching Backfires Almost Instantly With $90 PS4 Scam - Well that escalated quickly.

by Dan Van Winkle

LMAO Amazon and Walmart jig just got ps4 for $97 pic.twitter.com/pEIKsCvdHN

— Taahaa Mobeen (@taahaa8) November 18, 2014

Walmart has long had an “Ad Match” program to price-match other stores, but just days ago they began officially matching prices at select online retailers, including Amazon. So, of course, the Internet had to go and ruin everything by setting up PS4 sale pages with incredibly low prices and getting them price-matched.

How could price-matching a site with user-generated product pages possibly go wrong!?

post-12466-I-don-t-know-what-I-expected-g-gIlY

It seems that, originally, people were using a single Amazon listing that had a PS4 priced at $89.99.

Here is the “official” link for that PS4 price. http://t.co/tnwnmwVoXZ — Norman Caruso (@GamingHistorian) November 18, 2014

But it seems Amazon has caught on, as the page is now marked “out of stock” with no price. Twitter users have suggested alternate means like setting up your own fake listing and screencapping it before Amazon shuts it down or using browser dev tools to edit the price on the real PS4 listing. Those options are maybe slightly more morally bereft and involve actually producing something fraudulent on the part of the buyer rather than just screencapping an existing listing, but I doubt anyone really thought the $90 PS4 listing was legitimate in the first place, so I wouldn’t put it past anyone.

In a similar situation, Sears had a glitch on their website recently which listed a Wii U bundle at $60, and consumers jumped on it with price-matching efforts. However, Walmart’s own price-matching policy reads that they don’t accept “misprinted ad prices of other retailers,” which definitely covers the Sears debacle and could probably even be applied to the Amazon situation, seeing as there were no actual $90 PS4s. It’s just going to take a little extra effort on the part of store employees to identify these “misprints.”

So that should be fun for store employees going into the holiday season.

I’m not sure I think poorly of anyone who pulled it off, though. I have no tears to shed for Wamart, and I doubt it’s going to have any effect on price-matching policies in the long run. I’d almost call these shoppers quick thinkers, but then I consider the intelligence involved in tweeting about how you willfully scammed a retail giant out of a few hundred dollars, and it’s kind of a wash.

Microsoft Azure Outage Across the Globe

by Soulskill
hawkinspeter writes: The BBC reports that overnight an outage of Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform took down many third-party sites that rely on it, in addition to disrupting Microsoft's own products. Office 365 and Xbox Live services were affected. This happened at a particularly inopportune time, as Microsoft has recently been pushing its Azure services in an effort to catch up with other providers such as Amazon, IBM, and Google. Just a couple of hours previously, Microsoft had screened an Azure advert in the UK during the Scotland v. England soccer match." (Most services are back online. As of this writing, Application Insights is still struggling, and Europe is having problems with hosted VMs.)

'Super Smash Bros.' for Wii U is completely insane and absolutely amazing

by Andrew Webster

My coffee table is a mess. Right now it’s covered with a pile of controllers that makes it look like I live in a frat house: there are three Wii remotes, a handful of Gamecube controllers, a Wii U Gamepad, and a 2DS. There are even a few Amiibo figures laying around, Nintendo's take on the Disney Infinity toy fad. But I'm not a slob, I swear. I need each and every one of these objects to play the new Super Smash Bros., which finally launches on Wii U this Friday. It's the best version of Nintendo's fighting series yet, absolutely packed with new content and game ideas, including an obscene new eight-player mode. All those players means a lot of hardware.

The Wii U version of Smash Bros. is very similar to the version that launched on 3DS back in October. The series' portable debut was a surprisingly solid outing; but with its fast pace and huge stages, Smash Bros. isn’t necessarily the best fit for a handheld, and when you play on Wii U the difference is obvious — Smash Bros. can finally breathe again. Playing the game on a television feels like stretching your legs, as you can finally test the limits of a level without having to worry about the camera zooming out and characters shrinking down to minuscule proportions.

This is the right way to play.

Just like Mario Kart, Smash Bros. is a game best experienced in the company of friends. On 3DS you could play locally, but each player needed their own 3DS and a copy of the game to play. Four people sitting around staring at their own 3DS just isn't the same as crowding around a big screen and trash talking with your buddies. Smash Bros. on Wii U reminds us just how amazing the communal aspect of the game can be — and then it takes it to another level.

Super Smash Bros

Super Smash Bros

Super Smash Bros

Super Smash Bros

An insane game even at its tamest

Smash Bros. is an insane game even at its tamest. It's a game where you can throw a hive at Luigi to unleash a swarm of bees, or knock Bowser hundreds of feet in the air by kicking a soccer ball at his face. When four players are on screen, the frantic pace and unrelenting action — there are levels that are constantly in motion and a steady barrage of special items — makes it hard to keep track of things. At times I just push buttons and hope for the best because I can't even find my character on the screen.

With eight people playing simultaneously, it's hard to even put into words. There's just so much happening at once, so fast. Eight-player Smash Bros. might be the craziest, most intense video game experience I've had in years — but it's also amazing. Maybe it's the sheer novelty, but having so many people playing in the same room on the same TV was so much fun. Trash talking and in-game surprises, like an accidental explosion that kills everyone, are that much better with more people.

But like multiplayer on 3DS, it takes a lot of hardware to play Smash Bros. with eight people. Luckily, the game has a huge range of control options, including Gamepads, Wii remotes, and even a 3DS. Rounding up all of those controllers can be expensive, so it's probably easier if your next Smash Bros. party is BYOC (bring your own controller). Everyone has their own preference, too, but for me it’s a Gamecube controller. Nintendo has released a $20 adapter that lets you use Gamecube controllers with your Wii U (though Smash Bros is the only supported game at the moment), and once you do it's hard to go back. Those shoulder buttons are just so deep and clicky that I don't want to use anything else.

The newest Smash Bros. is also surprisingly great to play by yourself. You have old standby modes like Classic (where you battle a series of opponents capped off by an annoyingly difficult boss) and All-Star (where you battle through Nintendo's history, fighting groups of characters from different time periods). But there's also an amazing new mode called Events, which gives you a huge range of very specific tasks to complete. These range from defeating a stage filled with Pikachus to putting everyone on screen to sleep using Jigglypuff's singing. One section pits all of the fastest characters against one another and then ramps up the speed considerably. Events does an amazing job of taking the core Smash Bros. gameplay and adding a fresh new spin on it, and there's even a multiplayer version so you can take on weird challenges with friends.

Not every addition to the game is a winner, though. The new, board game-like Smash Tour mode is boring and overly complex, and Nintendo's new Amiibo figurines feel underutilized. Essentially you can use the toys as customized characters; you scan them in the game using the Gamepad’s NFC, and as you use that character it will grow in skill and can be customized using new moves and power-ups. Problem is, Smash Bros. already has fairly robust character creation and customization options, and the Amiibos don't add a whole lot outside of the novelty of collecting cute little toys. (Amiibo support is also coming to other games, including Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors, but the functionality also appears to be pretty limited there as well.)

Super Smash Bros

Super Smash Bros

Super Smash Bros

Super Smash Bros

The new Smash Bros. doesn't skimp when it comes to fan service

As with past games, the new Smash Bros. doesn't skimp when it comes to fan service. The series brings nearly all of Nintendo's history together on a single disc, and there’s even some outside stuff like Pac-man and Mega Man thrown in. It's basically a love letter to video games, and the latest game continues the tradition of giving you lots of cool little tidbits to collect. The unlockable trophies are back, each detailing a different piece of gaming history, and there's a sizable selection of short movies you can watch detailing the different fighters. There's even a short anime film of an intense sword fight between Link and Pit tucked away in the movies menu.

But Nintendo has also gone a step further this time and added actual playable demos of classic NES and SNES games into Smash Bros. If you've ever wondered just what Kid Icarus actually is, you can check out a brief demo without ever leaving Smash Bros. The demos are unfortunately pretty slim, with strict time limits of around three minutes each, but as an added bonus they're a great idea, one that will hopefully introduce new players to some of Nintendo's classics.

Smash Bros. is perhaps the most Nintendo game ever. The company gets derided for rehashing old franchises, but there's a reason that it goes back to the well so often: Nintendo makes amazing games. The newest Smash Bros. is fundamentally the same as past versions, but it's also the best iteration, building on top of its predecessors with amazing new modes and ideas like eight-player battles. It takes what you love about Smash Bros. and cranks it up to 11.

It's worth giving up your coffee table to a pile of controllers.

Space 3D Printer Is Installed

by General Fabb
firehose

via Jakkyn

A few short weeks ago a SpaceX cargo craft carried a unique experiment: A 3D printer designed for space. Now it’s being installed.

The device was installed in the microgravity “glovebox” and will be used to study the extrusion process in a weightless environment. The first items to be printed, as is the case on the ground, will be calibration “coupons” to ensure the device is operational and properly forming objects.

Once proven to work, the printer will produce a variety of test objects designed to check out various properties of micro-gravity-3D printed objects have predictable strength, flex and other engineering characteristics. These will be compared to control prints made on the ground to understand the differences between printing environments.

The 3D printer was produced by startup Made In Space. This is their first 3D printer in orbit, and if it succeeds, it won’t be the last.

No, they’re not yet printing usable objects. This is only a test to understand whether the technology works. If it does, one can easily imagine NASA equipping future spacecraft with 3D printers to enable part production onsite in space, thus avoiding the costs and delays of shipping parts by cargo craft to the space station. NASA could even transmit an entirely new design to the ISS for immediate production, a new capability for spacecraft.

A Bicycle Bottle System That Condenses Humidity From Air Into Drinkable Water

The weight of water limits how much can be brought on a long bike ride. There isn’t always an option to stop and fill up from a clean stream or drinking fountain, but water could be obtained from a different source: the air. Austrian industrial design student Kristof Retezár has created Fontus: a prototype of a water bottle system that condenses humid air into clean, drinkable water. His design made him a finalist for the 2014 James Dyson Award.

The Fontus attaches to the bicycle frame and consists of a condenser unit and a bottle for collection. There is a solar panel on top of the unit that powers the condenser. As the motion of the bike causes air to blow into a channel, the moist air is cooled, causing it to condense. The droplets roll back down the condensing unit, collecting in a water bottle mounted underneath.

A filter is fixed onto the opening where the air comes through, preventing bugs or dirt from damaging the components or getting into the water. However, the filter isn’t effective at removing pollutants in the air, which could contaminate the water. Until another filter is added to correct this problem, it shouldn’t be used in an urban setting.

Currently, the design is capable of producing a drop of water per minute, in air that is approximately 50% humidity with temperatures at least 20˚C (68˚F). Sadly, this means that it will take a considerable amount of time to produce enough water to drink. Retezár's home city of Vienna is not known for its humidity, so he was forced to conduct his experiments in his bathroom using steam from the shower. He predicts that areas with higher levels of humidity could produce as much as half a liter per hour.

The technology behind the design does not only apply to keeping thirst quenched; it could potentially save lives. Over 780 million people on the planet do not have reliable access to clean water, and the problem is predicted to worsen with the changing climate. Condensing humidity into drinking water could be a way to help curb that increasing demand.

Of course, this is not the first time a device has tried to draw the moisture out of humid air for drinking purposes. Warka Water towers in the Namib desert mimic beetles that drink the fog from the air. Eole Water uses wind turbines in the United Arab Emirates to cool air, condensing it into drinking water. Researchers in Peru have designed a billboard to condense humid air, dispensing the water at the bottom.

While it isn’t particularly hard to condense humid air into drinking water, developing a system that is practical and cost-efficient on a large scale is the limiting factor. The price of each Fontus device would likely run between $25-40 each, though that number will hopefully go down as the device is developed further. Mass production will also help drive down costs, and Retezár is currently investigating crowdfunding options that would make a larger production order more feasible.

The Robot Bartender Hit On My Wife

by gguillotte

'"The bartender just flirted with me!" she announced. That statement didn’t surprise me; there aren’t any downsides to being married to an attractive woman, but having strangers hit on your wife when you leave her alone in a public place is a fact of life and…

Waitaminute! I thought. Isn’t the bartender a…

"…robot!" she said. (Yes, she sometimes finishes my thoughts. Scares the hell out of me when she does that.) During my chat with Bill Martin, Tracey had started pre-graming at the Bionic Bar, where she ordered a drink using its virtual ordering system. And on the big display that shows drink orders, the "bartender" had written next to her name: "If I had a heart it would belong to you." '

"It was a very whimsical idea." Royal Caribbean CIO Bill Martin told me as we relaxed in Quantum’s Concierge Lounge. "Someone said, ‘What if we could have a bartender that was a robot?" That led Royal Caribbean to partner up with robotics firm Makr Shakr to create the Bionic Bar, which is now one of the most talked-about features of the heavily-hyped Quantum of the Seas. “It is amazing to us the amount of interest in it,” Martin told me. “People are just really enamored with it. When you see [a robot] close up, it’s personal because it’s making a drink that you’re going to drink.”

Wigan Athletic hire Malky Mackay as new manager

by Kevin McCauley

10 other teams passed over Mackay. Dave Whelan is unfazed by his record.

Here's what Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan said in 2011 after Patrice Evra was racially abused by Luis Suarez.

"If a white man insults a black man, that's big, big news. If, if, a black man insults a white man, that's nothing, and it's expected.

"So I just think we should forget colour, and, you know, it doesn't bother anybody, I'm sure, colour and.... sometimes a footballer... erm, when they're playing at such a level... you know the stress is there.

"And if, if, they call somebody white, if they call somebody black, you've just got to get on with it.

"You know I think the players who come and complain sometimes, they're a little bit out of order.

"The game is a game, the game is a football game, whether you're white, black, pink, red, it doesn't matter. We're all, we're all equal, and we all play football, and we should get on with it."

Here is a selection of the bigoted text messages that former Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay sent while he was employed by that club.

On the arrival of South Korean international Kim Bo-Kyung:

"Fkn chinkys. Fk it. There's enough dogs in Cardiff for us all to go around."

On football agent Phil Smith:

"Go on, fat Phil. Nothing like a Jew that sees money slipping through his fingers"

On transfer target list:

"Not many white faces amongst that lot but worth considering."

On a player's female agent:

"I hope she's looking after your needs. I bet you'd love a bounce on her falsies."

On an official at another club:

"He's a snake, a gay snake. Not to be trusted"

To members of Cardiff's staff:

A picture entitled 'Black Monopoly' - where every square was a "Go to Jail" square

On Wednesday, despite being passed over for vacancies at 10 other Championship clubs, Mackay was hired by Whelan to manage Wigan Athletic.

"I know that this appointment will draw criticism in some quarters but we go into it with our eyes open and we have nothing to hide on this subject," said Whelan. "Contrary to the way he has been portrayed in recent months, the Malky Mackay I met this week, and who has been vouched for by the many different people from whom we have sought advice before making this appointment, is an honourable man."

To quote our own Callum Hamilton, "Mackay's leaked texts to Ian Moody revealed a veritable smorgasbord of bigotry. Black people, Asians, women, Jews, gay people; he had the whole lot, a retro form of blanket bigotry we thought we'd never see the like of again." And it should be unsurprising that the one chairman of a prominent club willing to look past this was Dave Whelan.

UpdateHere's what Whelan thinks of Jewish people.

"I think Jewish people do chase money more than everybody else. I don't think that's offensive at all."

He followed this up by using the defense that everyone who makes racist remarks uses.

Dave Whelan on Sky: "I have got hundreds and hundreds of Jewish friends. I would never upset any Jewish person"

Jason Collins announces retirement from NBA

by Satchel Price

The first openly gay athlete in one of the four major American sports leagues has officially hung up his jersey with Wednesday's announcement.

Longtime NBA big man Jason Collins announced his retirement from the NBA on Wednesday in a personal column for Sports Illustrated. The first openly gay athlete in one of the four major American sports leagues after coming out roughly 18 months ago, Collins now calls it quits after 13 years as an NBA journeyman.

On Wednesday at the Barclays Center, I plan to announce my retirement as an NBA player. The day will be especially meaningful for me because the Nets will be playing the Bucks, who are coached by Jason Kidd, my former teammate and my coach in Brooklyn. It was Jason who cheered my decision to come out by posting on Twitter: 'Jason’s sexuality doesn’t change the fact that he is a great friend and was a great teammate.'

Collins, 35, last played under Kidd last season with the Brooklyn Nets. He only appeared in 22 games, mostly getting garbage minutes on a playoff contender, but became prominent around the country after announcing his sexuality in an SI article last year.

With that announcement, Collins became the first openly gay athlete actively playing in one of the four major American sports leagues. He's since become one of the most public supporters of gay athletes in professional sports, using his platform to increase awareness and encourage a more inclusive environment for all people.

Now Collins heads into his post-playing life, but not before reflecting on some career highlights in his retirement announcement. The most important one involves wearing the No. 98 after meeting the family of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student who was beaten to death in a 1998 hate crime in Wyoming.

Collins doesn't specify what he plans to do now that he's prepared to leave professional basketball behind, but one imagines he'll continue to be an important, outspoken public figure in the gay rights movement.

Over 13 NBA seasons, Collins averaged 3.6 points and 3.7 rebounds in 735 games for the Nets, Hawks, Celtics, Timberwolves, Grizzlies and Wizards. He appeared in back-to-back NBA Finals with New Jersey in 2002-03, but never won a ring.
